FOR some people, a verse written on paper is much more than a sticky note. It’s a reminder to hold on to hope, peace, and faith when life gets heavy.
And more now than ever, believers are filling their homes, offices, and even phone screens with scriptures to keep them grounded throughout the day. Tribune Religion spoke to a number of locals who shared their thoughts on the topic.
“A few months ago (thanks to Tiktok), I redecorated a room in my home with portraits of my favourite bible verses. It’s so cute. I kept coming across videos on Tiktok and said I don’t know why I never thought of that before,” said one Bahamian woman, Latasha Beneby.
For Jessica Bain, the habit started small. She used to just keep one single verse - hanging as an air freshener in her vehicle.
“But now I feel like they are all over the place. There is one you can’t miss as soon as you walk into my home, and I love that. It sets the tone for my whole house,” said Jessica.
Others find creative ways to keep the Word close by. “I change the lock screen on my phone often to different scriptures every now and again. It sounds simple, but I check my phone a hundred times a day. I have to read the scripture
100 times a day; and that’s never a bad feeling. Especially dealing with the stressors of life,” said Crystal Forbes.
For many of them, the practice is about creating an atmosphere of faith, hope, love and encouragement. “When friends come over, they’ll see verses written on my wall art or fridge magnets,” Jessica chimed in to add.
She said it also sparks a conversation. But for her, it’s mostly about reminding herself of God’s promises. “Trust me, I need those reminders every day. One of my favourite scriptures is Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord,” said Jessica.
And while some people choose elaborate calligraphy prints or carefully decorated journals, others keep it as simple as pen and paper. It doesn’t matter how fancy it looks, the power is in the Word itself.
As Crystal said in her additional comments: “Life can shake you up. But when you’ve got the Word of God in front of you, you can’t forget where your strength comes from. Never, boo.”

St Andrew's Anglican School in Exuma recently held their Prefect Installation, Grandparent's Day and Founder's Day Mass at St Andrew's Anglican Parish in Exuma.
The Rev Father Tristan Lockhart, Assistant Rector said: "We pause to thank God for His blessings upon this school for the past 41 years. This school has strived because of the dedication of the administrators, teachers, staff, parish priests and church, generous donors, parents and the community.
"Father Lockhart paused to recognise the founding members present at the service in the persons of Debra Moxey-Rolle and Jennifer Kettel who both saw the vision 41 years ago to begin the school. Father Lockhart further commented that "we are about building, expanding and planting new seeds to do the Lord's work". We honour our grandparents for nurturing and supporting our children.
To our prefects, Lockhart said, we are proud of you. We install you today not just to put a pin on you but because we trust you for this job. To whom much is given, much is required said Lockhart. Leadership requires you to exemplify unity and love. The teachers and administrators need your help and support. Prefects with that trust comes accountability. How you dress, how you treat others and how you conduct yourselves. I want you to undestand the great responsibility to help lead our school in this new era that God is guiding us into. Let us honour the foundation that has been laid. Prefects may you lead with humility, courage and faith."
Principal Tamara Moncur thanked Father Lockhart and acknowledged the presence of the founding members Debra Moxey-Rolle & Jennifer Kettel, as well as Lelani Burrows - Deputy Director of Education for The Anglican Central Education Authority.
Also in attendance were Cecil Smith - Deputy Chairman of The School Board, Rev Cedric Smith and his wife.

FOR Lucretia Rolle, serving the elderly and the less fortunate is not simply an act of kindness. It is a calling deeply rooted in her faith and shaped by the example of her late mother, Marie B Gardiner.
“My passion comes from my late mother,” Lucretia told Tribune Religion. “She raised me with a spirit of compassion, generosity, humility, and service. From an early age, she taught me that no matter how little we had, there was always someone with even less who needed a helping hand, and to always be grateful.”
Those early lessons became the foundation of a ministry that has touched countless lives. Together, mother and daughter began quietly feeding, clothing, and caring for seniors and the homeless. Even with limited resources, they gave what they could, and Lucretia recalls how God always multiplied their efforts.
What inspired her to expand this personal mission was the pain and hopelessness she saw in the faces of those often overlooked by society. She began preparing meals, packing care bags, and driving around the streets of Nassau to find the hungry.
“Many days, I would prepare and pack hot, healthy meals, and drive around to find those in need, especially seniors,” she said. “Sometimes I did not know where I would end up, but I trusted God to guide me.”
That trust led her to many encounters that confirmed the need. Growing up in The Grove, Lucretia remembered the heartbreak of seeing people scavenge for food, even from family dumpsters. Those images stayed with her, fueling a commitment to do what she could to ease the suffering of others.
Though she never sought recognition, her work began to draw attention. One defining moment came when reporter Tanya Smith-McCartwright featured her in the “Woman in Action” section of The Punch. From that point, her efforts grew. With support from one of Nassau’s largest wholesale food companies, she expanded her reach, supplying food and goods not only to individuals but also to charitable organizations across the Family Islands. Institutions such as All Saints Camp, the Children’s Emergency Hostel, the Bahamas Red Cross, Ranfurly Homes for Children, and Elizabeth Estates Children’s
Home have all benefited from her ministry. Still, Lucretia insists that her work is never about fame or recognition.
“Serving others is about love, obedience, and trust in God,” she said.
Faith has always been the heartbeat of her journey. Over thirteen years ago, Lucretia sustained injuries in an industrial accident that left her unable to hold a permanent job. Yet her faith did not waver.
“I believe that God calls us to love, care for, and uplift one another, especially those who are most vulnerable,” she explained. “When I see the elderly, I see wisdom and lives that deserve dignity and care. When I see the homeless, I remember Christ’s words: ‘Whatever you do for the least of these, you do for Me.’ That scripture stays close to my heart.” For her, every meal, every word of encouragement, and every act of care is an expression of God’s love.
She recalls one rainy day that reaffirmed her calling. While serving meals, Lucretia met a man who had been living on the streets. After receiving his food and care bag, he began to cry. “He said, ‘You do not know what this means to me. I was just about to give up,’” she remembered. “In that moment, I told him, ‘God has not forgotten about you.’. Later she returned with clothing, a sheet, and a pillow.
The gratitude and smile on his face she said reminded her that even the smallest act of kindness can restore hope.
Today, Lucretia believes the most urgent need among the elderly and homeless in The Bahamas is consistent care and dignity. Too many she said are left to fend for themselves without proper shelter, food, or companionship. She dreams of opening a senior care home and wellness center, a safe and loving space where people can receive daily meals, medical attention, recreational activities, and emotional support.
“My dream is to build a place where they can feel like family again,” she said.
“To me, this vision is more than a project. It is a calling. With God’s help, I am determined to build a place where the forgotten are remembered and where hope is restored.”
