Miller-Uibo: ‘I’m living out my dream’ MINGOES, By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

haunae Miller-Uibo can best be remembered as the star track athlete at St Augustine’s College who grew in stature as a CARIFTA Games champion right before our eyes. We’ve watched as she has excelled as an IAAF Youth and Junior, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games gold medallist. Over the last two years, she has taken the Bahamas national record in the 200 metres (21.88 seconds on August 24, 2017 in Zurich,

Switzerland) and the 400m (48.97 on July 20, 2018 in Monaco) to unprecedented heights. Over the weekend, she had an opportunity to become the first woman to win both the IAAF Diamond League Finals 200 and 400m for a consecutive year. But in Brussels, Belgium, she opted to go for just the 200m title and did it in grand style with her purple and lilac hairstyle flashing as the rest of the field could only watch in awe. Immediately following her triumph at the King Baudouin Stadium, where she was greeted by a number of fans who waited patiently either to take selfies or

get her autograph, Miller-Uibo gave an up close and personal interview with The Tribune. With her parents May and Shaun Miller along with her husband, Maicel from Estonia, joining her for the much anticipated performance, Miller-Uibo talked candidly about a little of everything. When asked what inspires or motivates her to succeed, MillerUibo said it’s definitely the love of the sport. “I always tell myself that when I fall out of love with it or I am not having fun with it, I will hang it up,” she stated. “But I’m having so much fun with it and I’m learning

so much about it. It’s something that I always wanted to do as a young kid and now I’m living out my dream, so I’m really happy with it.” During the five years that she has been competing as a pro after completing just her freshman year indoors at the University of Georgia, Miller-Uibo has been fortunate to travel all around the world to compete. Out of all the places she has visited, she admits that she really can’t pinpoint the best. “One of my favourite places, would you believe it, has been Jamaica and back at home in the

TEAMS GET READY TO RUMBLE By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE University of the Bahamas athletics programme introduced its teams as the Mingoes prepare to contest the 2018-19 season. Coaches and members of the track and field, judo, men’s soccer, men’s basketball along with women’s volleyball discussed their goals for the season and plans for development in the immediate future. The Mingoes men’s soccer team had arguably the most successful year of any discipline last season and head coach Dion Godet looks to build on that momentum. The Mingoes captured the Bahamas Football Association league championship with an undefeated record. “We have some very lofty goals and perhaps a bit more pressure considering what happened last year. For the UB Mingoes men’s soccer, I guess the simple expression would be ‘clarify the win.’ We’re a programme of student athletes and the first win for us is that our athletes are students first and performing at their highest. “One of the things I was most proud of is that the team had a very strong

Knowles-Tener, Strachan make season debuts By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net IT was a breakout game for Mike Strachan and a new programme for Rondre Knowles-Tener as the former high school teammates made their season debuts in NCAA football last weekend. Strachan produced the best game of his career in his University of Charleston Cougars’ 35-31 win over West Virginia State University at UC Stadium in Charleston, West Virginia. The 6’5”, 205-pound redshirt sophomore wide receiver finished with four receptions for 159 yards and one touchdown. On their first possession Charleston quarterback Mason Olszewiski connected with Strachan on a 59-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. Established as a deep threat early in the season for the Cougars, Strachan would also catch a 42-yard pass later in the quarter

and a 51-yard catch in the second quarter. He was a redshirt in his true freshman season and saw the first playing time of his collegiate career last year. He recorded stats in just one game when he caught the first reception of his career for them in a 19-16 loss to the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons. The Cougars were slotted to finish fourth in the Mountain East Conference preseason poll with 63 points. They finished the 2017 season 4-6. Strachan entered college as a three-sport athlete following a standout career at Liberty Christian Academy. Strachan was a member of the 2013 VISAA 1 State Championship team and received All-Conference and Honourable Mention AllRegion as a senior. He was also ranked fourth nationally in the 500m, setting a new LCA record at the Hokie Invitational. After struggling to earn playing time over the last two seasons with the James Madison Dukes, Rondre

Knowles-Tener has decided to leave the programme and transfer to the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers. With the move to Virginia-Wise, he also joined Strachan in the Mountain East conference. He finished with one solo tackle in a 17-7 opening week loss to Glenville State. Coming out of high school, Knowles-Tener originally committed to the East Carolina Pirates but eventually chose to join the programme at James Madison. He sat out his true freshman season last year as a redshirt but was expected to be an important factor in the Dukes’ plans for its defensive front line moving forward. The 6’1”, 295-pound defensive lineman is a former standout performer at Tabernacle Baptist Academy and also anchored the defensive line at Liberty Christian Academy. Knowles-Tener drew interest from a number of elite Division I programmes, including Wake Forest and East Carolina.

THE University of Bahamas Department of Athletics is finalising its membership application for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and expects to submit the document this fall to become official members of the athletics organisation. The university will submit an application for associate membership. “We feel that we are putting together a solid application for NAIA membership consideration and expect to become the first non-North American institution to become associate members of this organisation,” said UB Director of Athletics Kimberley Rolle. “At UB we have a strong athletics philosophy and are developing a strong sports operation to align ourselves with what the NAIA desires of its institutions.” There are about 65,000 athletes in the NAIA across 250 schools and 21 conferences in the United States and Canada. The NAIA also has championships in 26 sports including basketball, both indoor and outdoor athletics, volleyball, golf, swimming and soccer. UB Athletics is seeking to become attached to The Sun Conference which includes schools mostly in Florida with a few in South Carolina and Georgia. Sun Conference teams regularly compete for national championships in the United States. In 2015-16, 32 Sun Conference teams were selected to compete in NAIA National Championships. “The NAIA is a perfect fit for UB for many reasons,” Rolle added. “The NAIA promotes
