23 PATIENTS GET VIRUS ON WARD

Single Sandilands employee passes on COVID as health officials deny PPE shortage By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net THE Public Hospitals Authority confirmed yesterday that 23 people have tested positive for COVID19 on the male ward of the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre. PHA said this happened after a staff member who worked across three wards at the institution tested positive for the virus. Six of the positive cases are symptomatic; the other 17 are asymptomatic, PHA said. “All affected patients are now being cared for on isolated wards,” PHA added.

“Aggressive sanitisation of wards at the institution continues as scheduled.” It is not clear when the patients were tested and when their results were confirmed. Yesterday’s COVID-19 dashboard indicated there were 10 new confirmed cases: seven in New Providence, two in Bimini and one in Abaco. The dashboard also indicated one new case in hospital, increasing the figure from 18 to 19. The country now has 761 confirmed cases overall. To minimise the spread of SEE PAGE THREE

THE Bahamas yesterday became the only country in the English-speaking Caribbean to receive a level four travel advisory from the United States indicating that US residents should not travel here because of the “health and safety measures and COVID-19 related conditions”. Most other countries in the region received a level three advisory which advises US residents to

reconsider travelling to those places. The Bahamas is joined by a list of regional countries that include Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Guyana and Cuba. The country recorded ten confirmed cases of COVID19 yesterday, including seven on New Providence, two on Bimini and one on Abaco. There was one additional hospitalised case for a total of 19. LUCIANO’S STAFF WILL RECEIVE THEIR CASH By TANYA SMITHCARTWRIGHT tsmith-cartwright@ tribunemedia.net

FORMER staff members of Luciano’s have threatened to take legal action over severance pay, but a spokesperson for the popular high-end eatery says it’s a “non-issue” that will be taken care of in the weeks ahead. The restaurant first closed its doors in March when the COVID-19

pandemic hit The Bahamas, jolting the economy to a stand still. Sadly, after a ten year run, it never reopened for business and some 72 employees were informed of the closure shortly before reports of the same hit the media in May. They were not given severance pay at the time information of the closure was given to them. George Meyers and Susan Lawrence are the chief shareholders in Luciano’s restaurant.

HR Solutions is the company that manages Luciano’s. “We are out here with no money,” said a former staff member, speaking to the Tribune on behalf of the disengaged staff. “We are speaking to a lawyer on this. They paid off all the foreigners who worked there, but the Bahamians are not being paid,” the worker alleged. SEE PAGE THREE
