I
t was another gold medal performance from Joanna Evans, this time in her speciality in the women’s 800 metre freestyle at the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia. Having already turned in by far the greatest individual performance ever by a Bahamian athlete at the games, Evans just missed out on her fifth medal when she had to settle for fourth place in the A final of the women’s 200m individual medley race. But after a short break in between, she
got it with her triumph in the 16-lap race to celebrate her 21st birthday by adding to the pair of gold and silver medals she already achieved. In the 200m IM, she clocked two minutes and 17.45 seconds to miss getting on the podium where Mexico’s Monika Gonzalez Hermosillo claimed the gold over compatriot Esther Gonzalez Medina. Kristen Elena Romano of Puerto Rico got the bronze. In that same race, Albury Higgs came in right behind Evans in fifth place in 2:19.30. Jonquel Jones scores season-high 23
ON FIRE: Jonquel Jones scored a season-high 23 points, Courtney Williams had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and the Connecticut Sun beat the Washington Mystics 94-68 last night. Jasmine Thomas added 14 points for Connecticut (14-12) and Alyssa Thomas had 12. The Sun shot 57.4 per cent from the field, with nine 3-pointers, and hit 7 of 8 free throws. Jones was 10-of-12 shooting and reached the 1,000-point club. Connecticut outscored Washington 26-9 in the second quarter to take a 45-35 lead at the break, and the Sun pulled away at the end of the third, closing on a 16-4 run for a 22-point lead. ADVOCATES WIN THE Advocates, a wellbalanced team of Lee Davis, Alcondo Hepburn, Janice Hoyte, Tara Johnson and Yule Hoyte, put on an amazing display of good bowling last night to claim the first place prize of $1,200 in the 2018 Kalik Bowling Team Tournament. The Advocates shot scores of 967, 1,075 and 1,126 for an average of 211, finishing 270 pins over Rum Runners, the $600 winner and second place finisher. In Your Guts won the $400 third place prize by edging out the Brooklyn Strikers by a mere 42 pins. The top male player in competition last night was Raymond Adderley of RUM Runners with a 656 high three game set. Runner-up was David Slatter of Pocket Crushers with a 245 second high game and a 648 second high set. Bud Cambridge of the Strike Force struck for the high game of 254. The ladies were led by Tara Johnson of The Advocates who downed the pins for a 576 high three game series. She was followed by Xynea Johnson of the Brooklyn Strikers who toppled the pins for a 567 second high set. Janice Hoyte of The Advocates mowed down the pins for the high game of 241. ‘HOOPING-BY-THE-PARK’ BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT STARTS ON AUGUST 3 KEEN action will ignite the Rubis “Hooping-bythe-Park” Basketball Tournament, when some 16 plus basketball teams and athletes will vie for the festival championship title, starting on Friday, August 3 at the Freedom Park in Fox Hill. The tournament is a part of the Fox Hill 2018 Festival, held under the theme: “Many People, One Community,” that commenced July 20 and ends on August 18. A number of events will be held. Teams wishing to participate in the tournament must be registered by Monday, July 30 in order to compete in the four divisions - 16-and-under, 19-and-under, ladies and men. The registration for the 16-and-under, 19-and-under and ladies divisions are

However, there will only be six teams allowed in the 16-and-under and 19-and-under divisions and will be on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a charge of $200 for the
men’s teams. They will be playing for a cash prize that will be determined by the amount of teams participating. There is a limit of 10 teams, placed in two divisions of five each.
All teams will be required to have a maximum of 10 players in all divisions. The proposed annual Rubis “Hooping-bythe-Park” Basketball Tournament is structured
on a 10-year plan with the aim to bring former basketball greats together as well as to positively assist youths in gaining exposure and developing their skills. “Hooping-by-the-Park”
tournament is a brain-child of two former Bahamian national athletes - Jabari Wilmott, the tournament organiser and Keron Pratt, assistant tournament organiser - who decided that when they completed their schooling in the USA, that they would return home to give back to their country and establish a tournament. Member of Parliament for Fox Hill Shonel Ferguson acknowledged their efforts and aimed to contribute and give full support to Pratt and Wilmott. “I am overjoyed to be a part of the tournament, as well as I am elated that these two outstanding young men (in Jabari Wilmott and Keron Pratt) have decided to take this to a reality. We are proud of them,” said Ferguson,
