BORROWERS HAVE $2BN PUT ON HOLD Crisis leaves debts deferred for third of banks’ total lending By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net A BAHAMIAN banker yesterday warned against premature panic after it emerged borrowers sought repayment waivers for almost $2bn worth of loans at the peak of the lockdown. Gowon Bowe, Fidelity Bank (Bahamas) chief financial officer, said that such a figure - representing almost one-third of total outstanding credit issued by Bahamian commercial banks - would only become a concern if it persists long after the post-pandemic re-opening. He argued that the Central Bank, and the
commercial institutions it supervises, will only face “difficult decisions” on regulatory capital, liquidity and loan loss provisioning if the economy fails to rebound within the next 12 months. Emphasising “we are nowhere near that juncture”, Mr Bowe said it was critical for Bahamasbased commercial banks to have “steady hands at the wheel”. He called for “all hands on deck” to re-open the economy in a safe and sustainable manner, warning that this nation must at all costs avoid the example set by multiple US states whose actions have facilitated a second wave of virus infections.

SIX flights are due to arrive in the country from the United States when international commercial travel resumes tomorrow, according to officials at Lynden Pindling International Airport. Despite a serious spike in COVID-19 cases in the US, the country’s borders will
fully open this week. Many of the incoming flights originate from cities and states where COVID-19 cases are high. “Current flight projections show a total of six flights arriving from the United States on July 1 starting with Delta Airlines’ inbound service from Atlanta to Nassau at approximately 11.30am,” a statement from LPIA noted. THIRTY-FIVE senior police officers and 90 contracted officers are expected to retire from the Royal Bahamas Police Force this year. This is according to the policing plan of Commissioner Paul Rolle, which was tabled in the House of Assembly yesterday. “It is expected that we will recruit some 270 officers during the year to augment the existing strength and backfill those officers expected to retire,” the document says. “The targeted strength of the force by the end of the year will be 2,787 sworn officers.” SEE PAGE FOUR
STRAW VENDORS - KEEP MARKET CLOSED By LEANDRA ROLLE Tribune Staff Reporter lrolle@tribunemedia.net
STRAW vendors are calling for the government to push back the Straw Market’s re-opening date until the cruise ship industry resumes in September. A spokeswoman for the vendors said they do not feel they will have a strong customer base if operations resume this month given that the bulk
THE STRAW MARKET of their customers are cruise visitors. This comes after Prime Minister Dr
Hubert Minnis announced on Sunday that straw vendors and jet ski operators will be able to return to work on July 27. However, the president of the Straw Business Persons Society, Reverend Esther Thompson, criticised the decision yesterday, saying vendors want the downtown facility’s re-opening dates to fall in line with the cruise industry’s re-opening.
