Ranfurly thrives on eggs

E

GG production is booming at the Ranfurly Homes for Children, with its brood of chickens producing an average of 110 organic eggs daily.

Alexander Roberts, Administrator of the Ranfurly Home, says he had always been interested in making the institution on Mackey Street more self-sufficient. Three years ago the home launched its backyard garden programme, growing pumpkins and watermelons among other crops. A generous donation of 250 chickens last October and help in the construction of the coop allowed the Ranfurly home to expand its project; now the revenue from the sale of eggs is “beginning to make a difference” in helping to finance the home.

The eggs cost $6 per dozen and Mr Roberts says he has a large buyer in the Bahamian tourism industry who purchases the bulk of them.

Helping to take care of the chickens has become a pastime for two of the children with others taking an active interest in the running of the coop. The residents eat the unsold eggs, one commenting that you “could taste the difference” between the Ranfurly eggs and their shop-bought counterparts.

Mr Roberts said he and the children aspire to increase their gardening output. Additionally, a different breed of chicken will soon be laying eggs with green shells, which he hopes will add a “novelty” factor for the children and the buyers.

interview She has been a victim of domestic abuse and suffered financial hardship, but entrepreneur Bekera Taylor has come through it all stronger than before. Using her experiences to write a book, she tells Cara Hunt how she hopes to help others overcome their challenges and realise their potential.

ekera Taylor wears many hats; she is an entrepreneur, restaurant owner, travel agent and farmer.

But ask her what role she holds most dear and without hesitation she will tell you it’s that of community activist and youth advisor.

“My passion is mentoring kids,” she told Tribune Weekend.

That passion probably stems from her own traumatic childhood which included domestic violence.

“I mentor children based on what I have learned from being a business owner and also from my own personal experiences and the hurts that I have experienced. I don’t want that pain to be in vain,” she said.

Mrs Taylor, 38, graduated from the College of the Bahamas where she studied Front Desk Administration and Bookkeeping. She also graduated from the West Palm Beach School with a degree in Floral Design. She has worked in many capacities, including as an event planner, floral/interior designer, poet, songwriter, actress, and now as an author.

She is married to Owen Taylor, and together they have two children – Owbeon Lousybwilliam Ronbeaudonald Taylor and Rybenique Jade McCartney.

She and her husband own the Food For Thought Restaurant on Village Road, as well as the Infinity NO Limit Outlet and the Myriad One Company.

The Myriad One Company comprises a travel agency, employment agency, and a performing arts and business mentorship office. The overall purpose of the Myriad One Company will be to

many years, and during that time she used her hospitality background to create a children’s tourism experience at the hotel she worked at.

“We would pair local children with guests and the kids would spend the day together doing things like picking coconuts,” she explained. “They would foster relationships, stay in contact, and often would be repeat visitors so that they could see their friends again.”

The Taylors also opened one of the only entertainment centres in Abaco.

Additionally, she was instrumental in bringing Junior Achievement to the island. The Taylors were very active in their church as well.

“My husband and I ran the entertainment section (at church). I was an usher and generally did whatever was required. I also was a part of the Girls in Action Ministry and I would do a lot of the decorating,” she said.

But despite all of the good her family tried to do in the community, Mrs Taylor said that they were left disappointed by many on the island.

“Our church was one of the biggest in the community, but despite that we had many of our members who would not patronise our business, and in fact we learned that they had been asked not to do business with us.”

Deeply hurt, she said, her family relocated to the United States where she prayed for inspiration of what to do next.

The answer came quickly – write a book about overcoming challenges based on her own experiences and the experiences of others.

“I was dealing with a lot of hurts from the past,” she said. “But they made me knowledgeable and now I feel like I can handle things better. I wanted to help people not to go to that dark place of no return and hopefully release their hurt as well.”

Mrs Taylor said she poured her heart and soul into the book, which she called “I Am Not Who You Say I Am, But Who God Says I Am.” The process of writing took about three months, during which she would write from 10am to 5pm daily.

“This book is for those who have been labelled by people, to inspire them to rise up in the calling and purpose of their life and become more productive and proactive. No one should ever have to go to the grave without leaving a little fingerprint in this world as a reminder of their existence,” she said.

“The views of each character in this book are from real life situations. Most

of these characters are personally known by me or are situations I experienced myself.”

Mrs Taylor hopes readers will be inspired to overcome their own obstacles in life, just as she and the others mentioned in the book were able to overcome theirs.

“I want them to know that they are not alone; hope is not lost and God is the true restorer of things,” she said.

Mrs Taylor did not shy away from controversial topics in her book. Each of the 21 chapters deals with a different type of person. There are chapters entitled “I am an abused child”, “I am a prostitute/stripper”, “I am a hypocritical pastor/priest”, “I am demon-possessed”, and “I am a witch doctor”.

Other chapters deal with weaknesses such as lying, drug addiction and adultery.

Mrs Taylor said she knows that this book was meant to be.

Ever since she put pen to paper to write it, she said, doors and paths have been opened for her.

For instance, she said, since writing it she has been able to

find people able to help her at every stage of her business for prices that were much lower than initial quotes she received.

Others working on the book, an unemployed young woman who typed the original manuscript and the cover artist, were also deeply moved by it, she said.

Mrs Taylor said she met another author online who was able to steer her in the direction of an editor and publisher. They were so impressed with her story, she said, that they agreed to distribute the book despite her lack of funds required to publish it.

“It was by chance that he actually answered the phone, because the person who usually does it was away, and when he heard my story he told me, ‘Send me the book and I’ll read it and give you my opinion’, and when he called me back, he said, ‘Congratulations, you are an author’, and he sent me a contract right away,” she said.

“It was just all connected and God-sent,” she said. “It’s so refreshing to know that it will come to life.”

Tradition meets hip sophistication at GRK PHOTOS/TIM CLARKE

RK Gyros and Grill is the latest addition to the Greek cuisine scene in Nassau, but unlike many other Hellenic-themed restaurants, this establishment is taking a slightly more modern approach.

Located on Mackey Street, GRK strives to provide authentic Greek food in a hip setting.

“We wanted to get away from the traditional blue and white setting that is typical of most Greek restaurants,” said George Mousis, one of the owners, of the restaurant’s sleek black and white décor.

Even the restaurant’s name reflects a new, trendy approach, with “GRK” (pronounced G-R-K) being a very 21st century, internet cultureinfluenced abbreviation of the word “Greek”.

But don’t let the setting or the name fool you, the restaurant still serves the traditional Greek fare that Bahamians have come love, cooked and prepared just the way it would be in Greece.

“We serve the usual flavours of yeeros – chicken, beef/lamb, pork,” said Mr Mousis.

He said the restaurant prefers to use the traditional name, “yeeros”, for what most people would call “gyros”.

“We really want to educate our customers. I know on this side of the world people call them gyros, but the word gyro really refers to the way meat is cooked – on a vertical rotisserie. The word gyro in Greek

On the vertical rotisserie, Mr Mousis explained, it takes about an hour for the meat to cook through.

The yeeros are served with the fries wrapped inside the pita bread rather than on the side because it is more authentic, said Mr Mousis. However,

if persons prefer to go with a more low carb option, then lettuce can be substituted for the fries.

Additionally, there are a number of Greek salads on the menu as well as souvlaki, which he explained literally means “meat on a stick” – meat that has been skew-

Lamb and beef yeero ered and grilled. Patrons can choose from chicken, pork, beef, shrimp or salmon, either on skewers or wrapped in pita bread.

The dishes are all served with traditional Greek sides such as feta fries, black olives, tzatziki sauce, arugula and hummus.

“Everything is fresh and made from scratch,” said Mr Mousis.

He also noted that the company seeks to be as environmentally conscious as possible and uses all biodegradable packaging.

GRK is open Monday to Saturday, from 11am to 7pm.

Preserving the legacy of rake n’ scrape

hile some historians believe that rake n’ scrape music was influenced by immigrants from the Turks and Caicos Islands who settled in Cat Island from the 1920s to the 1940s, there is no doubt that it is the signature sound of traditional Bahamian music.

And the signature instrument of rake n’ scrape is surely the carpenter’s saw.

However, one musician and educator is on a mission to show that another instrument – the accordion – also has a

long and rich history when it comes to rake n’ scrape.

The identity of rake n’ scrape, ironically, is preserved in its name; the melodious sound that identifies a country moulded by a history of slavery, colonialism, the American Civil War and the forced expansion of territory that wasn’t ready, but proved to be capable.

The Bahamas, its people and certainly its culture, were “raked” together by all those details and “scraped” to survive amid them.

“It’s that sound. That tune that becomes that feeling, that once contacted with a Bahamian, signals that spirit that we are at peace and home is near,” is how Diana Hamilton, a Bahamian musician who

lived in France for many years, described her attraction to rake n’ scrape.

In August, Ms Hamilton will hold her Cat Island Accordion and French Camp geared towards expanding the musical profile of indigenous Bahamian folk music among youth for the fourth time.

“I can’t explain it any better than this: you put the music around us and it tells us more of who we are better than we can tell ourselves. Believe it,” she said as she recalled her childhood in Europe where she was introduced and transformed by the riffs, more so her than the men playing it.

To expand her horizons, Ms Hamilton moved to Paris in the 1990s at the age of 19.

Once there, she fell in love

with music. That led her to a small sub-culture in Paris with an appreciation of folk music from around the world. She met and befriended Danielle Langer, a radio producer who was captivated by Bahamian rake n’ scrape.

According to Ms Hamilton, her friend had originally come across Bahamian music in her native Czechoslovakia (today Czech Republic and Slovakia) and became enamoured of it.

“She understood. When she spoke of it, she did so as a person would address the historical musical concepts.

She respected the instruments, the ingenuity, the culture.

When she drew the connection between myself and the music she loved, our relationship took off. It was through that

connection my appreciation for what rake n’ scrape had to offer grew. As I listened, it became clearer and clearer, the culture could not die. It had to live on with me, through me, because it meant literally the world to some people.”

An ocean away No matter where on Cat Island you are, on Sunday it is church, and once in church, it is all about music.

And as poems have stanzas and lives have moments, the musical statements of the Bahamas have their instruments.

Bahamians are a festive people and the sounds tell their stories better than words ever could.

“Once we touched down the hunt was on,” she said.

“Music, we had to find and embrace it. Everywhere we went we met aspects of a historical sound. Danielle had heard these melodies all her life, these sounds brought together to make this mash-up of beauty. Now, right in front of her were men and boys blowing into shells, hitting dried out and stretched animal skins. Actual saws were being raked and scraped. Each of those instruments spoke directly to parts of my body and soul. At the heart of it all – the accordion,” she said.

A volcano erupts History suggests that the accordion was invented by Friedrich Buschmann in 1822 in Berlin. Seven years later, Cyrillus Damian, of Vienna, advanced Buschmann’s design.

The sound of rake n’ scrape is synonymous with the accordion.

“It is one of, if not the main, cog of what rake n’ scrape offers. It is like guitar to rock n’ roll. It is, in my opinion, the pleasure point of something sweet. I couldn’t have imagined that in my wildest dream, but that is what we soon discovered,” Ms Hamilton said. “When we started to talk to the greats of the music we realised that in Cat Island, the birth place of rake n’ scrape, they all had stories of how important the accordion was.

“We heard stories from men who recalled creeping into their father’s and grandfather’s belongings, stowing away with their accordions for small periods and trying to mimic the sound they heard played earlier.”

Ms Hamilton told The Tribune that the concept of the accordion and the natural inclination Bahamians had for the instrument wasn’t realised until the launch of her programme years later.

“That is why I compare it to

Similar to a volcano, no one preps it to erupt, no one says it is time. It happens. We were told by the natives of Cat Island and of San Salvador that the instrument had a history in the Bahamas. We didn’t know how deep that ran. When we left the Bahamas at that point we made a promise to bring an accordion back when we visited again. We did that and it was clear the volcano was now active.”

Saving grace Ms Hamilton, a seasoned educator, has long held the position that through music and culture students can grasp any discipline, regardless of its difficulty.

Putting her musical career on hold, she returned to the Bahamas at the turn of the decade and dedicated herself to reigniting the love for rake n’ scrape among youth.

She launched her inaugural camp, an eight-day programme dedicated to introducing Bahamian youth to both the accordion and the French language. It was based in Old Bight, Cat Island.

“We went there because it was the last stronghold. The people, they are the heartbeat of Bahamian culture. They are

that sweet lining in something we love. Every church, music based. The kids, music is first nature. We brought the accordions, we gave them to the students. Through a French instructor they got it. Not only did they play, they grasped many of the primary concepts of the French language,” she said.

That strange dynamic with Bahamian music has always been its legacy. Who will carry it on?

The Tribune interviewed two of Ms Hamilton’s prized pupils recently: both stressed how important it was for them to “save the culture”.

The mark of a good teacher is the preparedness showed when tested by his or her students. A good leader builds a platform for their successor to succeed.

Rickeno Forbes, a native of Cat Island, was introduced to the accordion through Ms Hamilton’s programme. Due to a series of unfortunate events, Rickeno now finds himself as a ward of the Ranfurly Homes for Children.

“It has always been about music for me,” said the soon to be ninth grader. “I am not sad because I am here; it is just where I find myself and that is OK because my music is being improved here.”

According to the 14-yearold L W Young student, his introduction to music came at church. “We lived next to a church in Cat Island. We went every Sunday; the Old Bight Gospel Chapel. I played the piano, drums and any other thing I could get my hands on.

That is just what we did there.

When we left church we could sit around and listen to people like Blind Blake. I loved it because it brought me happiness.

Music was always there. No matter what was happening or what was being said, we had our music in Cat Island.

“I was 10 when I got the accordion. Days into it, I was comfortable and I could play.

I heard the songs the instructor played and I could go off to the corner and mimic it,” he said.

Song after song The tale Rickeno told mirrored the one by Ms Hamilton about the men she first met when she visited Cat Island in the early 2000s. They would stow away in corners for hours, fiddling away – song after song; story after story.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Nicholas Jayden Chriswell, who is spending his summer in Cat Island, got his chance with the accordion.

His mother, Janelle DavisMunroe, told The Tribune: “No one, not my father, his father, any of his grandfathers to my knowledge had a past with the accordion. It was a completely new instrument to us all but he looked comfortable.”

“I like it, because its fun to play and it sounds right,” said Nicholas.

The Temple Christian elementary student said when his paternal grandmother asked him if he was interested in learning about the instrument his interest was immediately piqued because of the way the accordion looked.

“I played the saw a bit but that was about it. When I got the accordion the more time I spent with it the more I loved it. The more I loved it, the more I wanted to make music with it,” he said. “Everyone is telling me how big of a deal this is to culture. I want to be a part of that because I love the Bahamas. I want to save this music because it means so much to Cat Island and the bigger Bahamas.”

Ms Hamilton’s camp will hold its fourth session in August at the Ranfurly Homes.

There, the group will expand to around 20 students, all looking to learn the basics of a Bahamian accordion riff – a riff made famous up the street from Nicholas’ grandmother’s house.

Legacy is defined in one sense as a gift of property, especially personal property, as money. In another sense, it is considered anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor.

It takes time to establish that. However, the key is getting started.

A summer of art

or many school children, summer is all about having several weeks of non-stop fun at various camps. For the young participants of the Sketchbook Collections Summer Art Camp, gaining a new and fresh perspective on art is what is on the agenda this year. The art camp started on Monday and runs for the entire summer.

This is the first camp hosted by Sketchbook Collections and will offer its participants a number of activities to hone their skills and develop talent.

Tija Sawyer, the camp’s organiser, explained to Tribune Weekend why an art summer camp is a worthwhile experience for kids.

“Students will get hands-on experience creating a wide variety of arts and crafts; from drawing and painting,

“Afrikkan” to hand sewing and comics,” said Ms Sawyer.

To put what they learn to the test, each week participants will be given projects that encourage them to ex-

“The main goal of the camp is to inspire kids to create the world around them. To show them how much they can do with just a little bit of imagina-

The art camp is geared towards students ages seven through 14.

Besides having an awesome experience and creating cool pieces that they can show off, she promises students will also learn to think creatively and with an open mind.

“They will gain new perspectives and improve their confidence. The camp will also improve their collaboration with other kids and adults. And hopefully the camp will inspire them to always believe that they can create the life they want,” said Ms Sawyer.

The camp runs in two sessions, from 11am to 4pm daily. Session one is held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while session two is held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

‘The Road’ offers unique joint exhibition DOONGALIK Studios will be hosting the opening of a unique joint exhibition of poetry and sculpture this evening.

Featuring the poetry of Robert Elliott Johnson and the sculptures and paintings of Dwight Ferguson, the exhibit officially opens its doors at 6pm.

A well-known poet of the 1970s whose work has been a staple on the national syllabus for the BJC and BGCSE exams for many years, Mr Johnson happily decided to awaken from his long hiatus to reacquaint the Bahamian public with his writing.

For his return to the public forum, he invited his friend and mentor Pastor Dwight L Ferguson to join him for a very special reason. In a frank discussion with gallery owner Pam Burnside, the two men explained the impetus for the upcoming show.

“Dwight and I met approximately

Poet Robert Johnson 20 years ago when I was going through one of my darkest periods. He was familiar with my work, but our paths had never crossed. Ironically, we met on East Street – the topic of one of my best known poems. He was a source of encouragement for me, and conversely I was a source of inspiration to him.

Dwight had a front row seat to observe my highs and lows, and as things improved in my life, we continued to be close friends. Though my church base is at Macedonia Baptist, I am also a regular visitor at his church,” said Mr Johnson.

“Dwight was a creative artist in his own right, and eventually we decided to do a group show. It is called ‘The Road’, both in deference to the title of

Abstract artist Pastor Dwight Ferguson my book of poetry, but also because the road is where we became acquainted.”

Pastor Ferguson, the senior pastor of the Church Of God Of Prophecy in Elizabeth Estates, is a self-taught abstract artist. He is currently studying Art Therapy at the Edna Manley School of the Visual and Preforming Arts in Jamaica.

“I started dabbling in art 25 years ago as a way to relax and to vent my thoughts, ideas and feelings. I consider art a spiritual and healing experience as the creative process provides me with clarity of thought, direction and purpose,” Pastor Ferguson said.

“I love to experiment with texture and movement, and find that using

I also find that recycling discarded materials in my work imbues them with a sense of beauty and purpose. I have held various group shows over the years but I consider this exhibition with Robert at Doongalik my most meaningful show because I feel as if I have arrived and have a voice. My hope is that my artwork connects with the viewer, inspires them and provides them with a sense of peace.”

The public is also invited to attend an Artist’s Talk on July 1, when Mr Johnson will read selections from his poetry book and engage in discussion with his audience. The exhibition will remain on display until July 12.

Top-notch local and international musicians play “Jazz in Bloom”

A

nuschka Wright’s annual Father’s Day “Jazz In Bloom” concert, held this year under the theme “Inspire”, was every bit the magical experience audiences have come to expect from her jazz songstress over the years.

The band behind the magic consisted, as usual, of an eclectic mix of both international and top-notch local musicians. Adrian D’Aguilar was on the bass, while Ralph Munnings played the alto sax. They are both regulars of the concert series. Newly featured were Giveson Gelin on the drums and Giveton Gelin on the trumpet. Both are members of Adrian D’Aguilar’s mentor group, The Jazz Cats.

Anuschka this year graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a Specialisation in Jazz Studies from Concordia University in Montreal. She graduated with honours and distinctions. This year’s guest artists were both connected to Anuschka by way of Concordia University – Dave Turner, who plays the alto sax, is a Concordia professor and leader of their big band, and pianist Chris Tauchner is a Concordia alumni and accompanist for the Concordia jazz choir.

When it came to performance time at the British Colonial Hilton last Sunday, Anuschka shone bright on stage. Performing without any other featured singers for the first time, she took command of the stage and the audience, gliding her way through the sets with comfort and ease, and drawing people into the story she was telling with her vocals.

The audience was fully entertained by jazz standards such as “Teach Me Tonight”, “Tea For Two” and “Love For Sale”. There was also some groove to be had with her rendition of a funked out version of “Small Day Tomorrow”.

Anuschka started the second set with something outside of the genre, bringing her audience to the world of musical theatre by performing “Losing My Mind” from the play “The Follies”.

Later, she showed some real grit, sinking her teeth into a soulful rendition of “I Put A Spell On You”.

After she announced her last number, “Black Nile”, the audience loudly expressed their disappointment, and when the tune was done Anuschka and her band were given a standing ovation.

Fittingly, Anuschka sang “One For My Baby (And One More For The Road) as the encore and left the band to play the audience out of the room with “Fungii Mama”, a fun calypso jazz song.

A comedic look at marriage behind the facade

he Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts will come alive this weekend as the cast of the new and exciting play “Til Death Do Us Part” take the stage.

The two-act comedic play, which will be performed at 8pm tonight and tomorrow night, deals with the fickleness of love and attempts to get to the bottom of what marriage really means.

The production company behind the play is Real Laughs Network, which is comprised of a group of creative women who share a passion for theatre and entertainment. They are certain that this new play will be unlike anything that has been seen on stage before and they are committed to making theatregoers laugh.

Rakel Dean, writer and director of “Til Death Do Us Part”, said this play is relevant to Bahamian society today as it focuses on the theme of family and the breakdowns within relationships.

The main thing the audience will be able to take away from the play, she said, is although marriage is something most people yearn to experience, many do not realise what they are getting themselves into. She explained that the play will expose the secrets and the darkness that can been hidden behind the facade of marriage.

“As we approach the wedding season we learn that love is universal.

We have couples that are considering marriage, those that are already married but are constantly searching for innovative ways to improve their marriage, or those pressured into marriage because of the new ‘Mr and Mrs’ trend. In writing this play, Ms Dean said she was motivated by the economic and social downturn in the Bahamas.

“Like every country we are undergoing changes and challenges, but the people make up the country. Although there are things occurring within your country that are beyond our control, we must make the best out of life situations no matter the circumstance, and that is the aim of my play. I made a commitment as a part of my spiritual journey with God that I would use my talents more wisely this year and so said, so done,” she said.

Although she has been in the business for more than a decade, writing poetry and short stories, Ms Dean said people are still surprised when they encounter that side of her.

“I have had people look at the flyer then look at me and say, ‘You wrote a

play?’ My response would always be the same: ‘Yes, I write,’ followed by a chuckle to seal the deal. The entire production experience has been a rewarding one. Being a part of a greater cause is an emotional experience, and allowing artists an opportunity to showcase their talents in a positive manner makes Real Laugh Network’s job worthwhile,” she said.

Ms Dean said she commends the play’s 12 cast members for their hard work and artistry. They cast includes Fylden Russell, Osbourne Lockhart, Lemorn Miller, Sony Jean-Jacques, Shornelle Nesbitt, Nikolette Elden, Angelique Hall, Dwain Wallace, Antoinette Knowles, Stephanie Braynen, Chigozie Ijeoma, and Ray-Angelo Seymour.

“Real Laughs Network anticipates that the message from ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ will be well received. It will hit close to home for many families and relationships. In addition, we hope that our audience will follow our theatre troop for future productions to come. You can look forward to productions from RLN real soon, as a matter of fact before the year is out,” said Ms Dean.

Local and international acts bring ‘palpable poetry’ to the Bahamas

ITH the goal of making poetry more accessible to Bahamians and to highlight the importance of the art form, four local organisations joined forces last Thursday to bring together some of the country’s best poets alongside international acts for the “Poetry Tour 2016”.

Created by Caribhype, the Chickcharney Chirren Group, Blue Monkey Bahamas and Pupstar Entertainment, the event saw poets and spoken word artists perform to a full house at the Pirate Republic.

Organisers said they were happy to feature three poets from the Chapter One Spoken Word group: De’Angelo Whyms, Surreal and King Que. Other highlights also included performances

by Thinkwright, Tradition and the night’s lead poet, Analogy from the United States.

“All of these spoken word artists have proven their skill and cover very current and topical issues in their poetry,” said Chester Robards of the Chickcharney Chirren Group.

“The Poetry Tour” was a first for the group, but will most definitely won’t be the last, he added.

Mr Robards said he believes the event is important because spoken word is still only respected by few here in the Bahamas. While it is a very niche art, he said it is important to note that spoken word is recognised around the world as one of the most potent vehicles for social messages and nuanced ideas.

“This is what we want to bring to the people of the Bahamas. The goal was to impress the audience by giving them poetry they can feel and relate to. That is what Analogy, De’Angelo, Surreal, King Que, Tradition and Thinkwright

brought to the event – palpable poetry,” Mr Robards said.

“Poetry is an outlet that, next to song and prose, releases the full passion and feeling of whatever subject the poet is covering. It benefits those listening because they pick up new ideas; different feelings are evoked when the poets move through their words and rhymes.”

Mr Robards said he was particularly pleased to have his long-time friend Analogy as the lead act of the “Poetry Tour”. Analogy, who has tour along the Eastern Seaboard of the US, was welcomed with open arms in Nassau last week.

“It was a special pleasure to have him perform in the Bahamas for the first time in the poetry show. We started our spoken word careers in Miami under the watchful eye of Will Da Real One, who has now passed on. Analogy moved forward with his spoken word, but we always dreamt of doing a show in Nassau,” he said.

Prom dreams come true

y former high school did not have prom and I skipped out on the formal dinner planned by students of the senior class. I had good reason: preparation for the dinner involved dressing to the nines, and would have been an expensive undertaking for my parents, who had a daughter with an extravagant fairy tale vision.

Moreover, hanging out with my boyfriend and a few friends at the Marina Village, Atlantis, instead of going to the dinner was far more appealing to me and equally as fun.

But let me assure of one thing, if my school did have a prom or I attended the formal dinner, I would have been a show-stopper – over the

top and fabulous.

Prom is a important celebration in a teen’s life. It is seen by many as a rite of passage following the long years spent bogged down in books, studying for countless hours. Its an opportunity to be someone else, or just a fancier version of yourself.

Last week, high school graduates throughout the Bahamas made it a point to celebrate the 2016 prom season in grand style. Social media was flooded with photos and videos of young men and women pulling out all the stops to be the talk of the town, or better yet, the talk of Facebook.

Parents made posts of their children in gorgeous gowns, perfectly tailored suits and Hollywood-style grand entrances. It was indeed a sight to see.

Ryan Hazarian, a graduate of the Lyford Cay School, shared her experience with Tribune Weekend.

She accompanied her friend, Caleb Ferguson, to the St Andrews School’s prom. She said she jumped at the chance to go with him to the prom.

And even though she was not a student of St Andrew’s, Ryan took home the title of ‘Best Dressed’.

“My school never has prom and I have always wanted to go. So when Caleb asked me if I would be his date I said yes. I was extremely excited,” she said.

Ryan started preparing for the prom several months prior to the big night. She was inspired by American model Chanel Iman who wore a dazzling nude dress during a red carpet event this year. Ryan sought out Bahamian designer Theodore Elyett who brought her version of the dress to life.

“The entire experience was truly wonderful one,” she said.

Ashley Rose was also among the high school graduates who had a memorable experience at prom this year. A graduate of St Augustine’s College, she put a lot of effort into having her floor-length red gown designed just the way she wanted it. However, while the dress was important, she said prom for her was more about spending time with her classmates.

“I decided to the wear red because it is the colour of the school. My dress was designed by the Patrice Lockhart and I loved it,” said Ashley.

“As for the entire experience, it was hectic to plan and get everything together. I enjoyed taking the photos and looking good. Prom was a wonderful experience, because it was the final time that we all got a chance to be together before going our separate ways,” she said.

Karin says: “It’s extremely simple and conservative for Ascot. But it suits Kate’s style, which I wish were a littler younger and fresher at times. Still, I am disappointed. One day I want her to take a risk.”

Cara says: “First of all, I am amused that she is wearing a name tag. Her hat is classic, and while it is extremely ladylike, it’s a bit boring for the occasion. I would have loved her to be a little more out there.”

Karin says: “Now this is what I’m talking about.

This is what Ascot is all about. I love the high feathers; it almost looks like an exotic crown.

Beautiful! And on top of that, it perfectly matches her the print of her dress.”

Cara says: “My first thought was that this hat has a slight Junkanoo style to it with all the feathers. It’s extremely cute and she looks great in it. Love the dress as well!”

Karin says: “It’s basically just a hugely oversized red rose. While it will definitely attract attention, it’s also a bit boring. It seems she wanted to be outrageous, but wanted to play it sorta safe at the same time.”

Cara says: “As the ultimate flower child, I love this hat. It’s like one rose ate all the other roses in the garden to grow this big. It is stunning. Love the rich red colour as well.”

Cara says: “She is wearing gold chocolate wrappers styled as a ram’s horns on her head. Let’s give her points for creativity. Thankfully, she is in the UK, because in Nassau’s heat this would be a sticky mess.”

Karin says: “Yay, Flower power! Yes, it’s big, loud and colourful, and summer appropriate, but it’s also looks a bit amateurish. Like she and her kids got the DIY kit out the night before and stitched all their crafts leftovers together.”

Cara says: “This hat is obviously meant to be extreme, and while I don’t mind the flowers trailing on the side and the bird cage netting, I do feel that the rose and feathers at the top don’t belong on the hat.”

Karin says: “This is the kind of drama we need at an event like this. It’s like a big, beautiful white swan landed on her head. It looks exquisitely made, and I have always loved a side-tilting hat. Gorgeous!”

Cara says: “Yes, it looks like a giant swan landed on her head and spread it’s wings. The hat looks must weigh a tonne, but it’s so worth it because it’s just great piece of headwear. I absolutely love it!”

Stylist’s boot camp to stimulate creativity and foster business sense

hose who believe they have an eye for style will have the opportunity to take their skills to the next level during the JSSA Fashion Stylist Boot Camp next month.

The fashion boot camp offers a rigorous three-day curriculum and starts on July 29 at the Ministry of Education.

Hosted by Bahamian stylist Joe Stubbs, the boot camp promises to be packed with information and activities for participants to engage in.

Participants will be given a fashion stylist manual and work book written by Mr Stubbs, entitled “The Beginners Guild To Styling”, will take part in a photo shoot to jump-start their professional lookbook, amd encounter numerous hands-on challenges.

They will be awarded with a certification of completion at the end of the three days.

Mr Stubbs said the JSSA Fashion Stylist Boot Camp is geared towards anyone who has an appreciation for the fashion, style and arts industries.

“The goal of the JSSA Fashion Stylist Boot Camp is to equip aspiring and current fashion/wardrobe stylists, designers and lovers of fashion with the knowledge needed to compete on the globe stage, and give them the tools to effectively create a prosperous business within their field,” he said.

The camp will focus on a number of important aspects of the fashion and style industry, including but not limited to, learning universal vocabulary, building clientele and working with celebrity clients, drawing up and reading contracts, preparing for and excuting photo shoots, as well as styling for different body types.

“This year, the boot camp has been extended to three days due to the amount of content that was covered last year.

We’ve increased the amount of challenges during the boot camp and our last year cohort will return to assist in the roles of peer mentors or our new cohort of aspiring fashion stylists,” said Mr Stubbs.

Navado Dawkins was last year’s overall winner of JSSA Fashion Stylist Boot Camp. He said participation in the boot camp increased his confidence in his skills and nurtured his passion to be a worldrenowned fashion, designer, stylist and merchandiser.

“I believe that JSSA Fashion Stylist Boot Camp would be beneficial to all interested in the field of fashion and style, as our main focus is proving a balance between business management and creative stimulation. Many times we have talented and creative Bahamians that can compete on the international level, but they lack a strong business foundation. At the JSSA Fashion Stylist Boot Camp we pride ourselves on ensuring that every participant leaves with enough knowledge and motivation to fulfill their dreams and passions,” said Mr Stubbs.

The importance of words

E

lection season is gearing up, but how do we talk about the race to win the vote?

The first of our podcasts this week – looking at words and how they are used – dips its toe into the electoral pool.

A Way With Words What are the words that really drive you mad? The ways of describing things that really seem over the top?

Well, the way we describe elections today once worked up writers into quite a later back at the end of the 19th century. The podcast A Way With Words highlights writers back then who complained about the way that elections were being described – particularly the word “campaign”.

The writers at the time took issue with elections being dressed up in the language of the military and warfare, one calling such speech “inflamed newspaper English masquerading as eloquence”, adding, “An election has no manner of likeness to a campaign or a battle; it is a mere comparison.”

The show is great at tearing into examples of language usage such as those above and others raised by callers. Hosts Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett are witty and exceptionally knowledgeable, especially as they deal with questions raised by callers when they haven’t had the chance to research the material beforehand. It’s a loose, relaxed, chatty show, and ideal listening to wile away a lunch hour.

They also highlight examples which might infuriate us today – but who knows how the future will look back on these uses of language considering we routinely talk of campaigns and election victories nowadays.

One of those I sincerely hope doesn’t take hold – apparently in the tech industry, workers are sometimes referred to as having “graduated”.

Sounds good, right? Alas, this is some horrible management-speak for someone having been fired, where they have “graduated” to no longer working with the company. I may be joining

“A Way With Words” shows how writers in the 19th century criticised the use of military terms such as “campaign” in terms of politics. the ranks of those 19th century writers when it comes to phrases like that.

Grammar Girl The Grammar Girl podcast also picks up on the subject of graduation – but from a different angle, asking the question why is something that is the end of your studies so commonly referred to as a “commencement”.

The root of it reaches back in history – and there are a couple of possible answers. One suggests that it represents the start of students’ new lives in the world, but another more interestingly goes back into medieval times when teaching was a guild. Students were the apprentices to the teacher, and at the end of their studies, they were initiatied into the master of the arts guild, the commencement of their careers as masters of arts.

This particular show also hands out tips on grammar, such as how to use the word “it” - and how not to.

Host Mignon Fogerty certainly knows her stuff, and there’s a lot of knowledge passed along in the 15

minutes or so of the show. It’s probably not a background listen – this is one to pay attention to if you want to make the most of the information provided.

Think of it as a 15-minute exercise for your brain!

The New Yorker Poetry Podcast Lastly, something relaxing but still very much with a focus on getting the most out of your word power.

The New Yorker website has a podcast section devoted to poetry. The format is simple, a poet reads a classic poem, and then one of their own works, having been introduced by the host beforehand and taking the time to discuss the strengths of each poem, the history behind their writing, and the personal importance it has to the reader.

The most recent show featured Northern Irish poet Nick Laird reading The Moose by Elizabeth Bishop, and it’s a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy a poem that is far

There are regular shows, all excellently produced, hosted by Paul Muldoon. The analysis can get a little over-indulgent at times, but if you can’t indulge yourself when sharing your favourite poetry, when can you? At about 15 minutes per show, it’s a quick listen that’s very well worth the time of those of us who truly love words.

Bahamians enjoy the Moët Tchin Tchin Brunch at the Balmoral Club

Celebrations relocated to the Tiamo Resort in Andros

ITH a name associated with the party lifestyle and celebratory occasions, the luxury winery Moët & Chandon is living up to its reputation by hosting a series of fun events around New Providence this month.

While countries around the world joined in the festivities on June 11 – the date that has become known as “Moët Day” – here in the Bahamas things were done a little differently, as local brand representatives chose to extend the party to several days.

Moët, which has been in existence for more than 270 years, chose the June 11 date because it marks a milestone in history of savoir-fête (the brand’s legendary sense of celebration). On that day in 1967, the celebratory champagne spray was born at the 24-hour Le Mans race in France. American driver and winner Dan Gurney did something unexpected when he was handed a Jeroboam bottle of Moët & Chandon on the podium: he sprayed champagne over the crowd. And just like that, a joyous new tradition was born.

This year in the Bahamas, celebrations kicked off on June 11 with a party-hopping event around town, taking over several restaurants such as Olives, Aquafire, Sapodilla and Summer Palace at the British Colonial Hilton in the process.

The next event followed on June 12 at the Tiamo Resort in Andros. Then, on June 17, Old Fort Bay played host to the “Champagne and Canapes” tasting experience by Chef Estaphane. The following morning, The Balmoral Club hosted the Tchin Tchin Brunch. At all events Moët & Chandon wines and champagnes flowed free, The week of events will conclude tomorrow night with “The Fabulous Life” to be

held at the new Sunset Resort on West Bay Street. This party will be hosted by the Corporation Promotional Company in collaboration with Moët.

Rachel Allahar, Moët brand representative, said they decided to take it up a notch in the Bahamas, extending celebrations, so has to have more opportunities for people to interact with the brand and really have fun with it.

“We had free prizes basically for everybody who ordered Moët at the party hop.

If you ordered a glass you had a chance to win a bottle or another glass. We did photo ops at each stop where we would take pictures of Moët lovers. For the Tiamo Resort event in Andros we got a private charter flight to carry everyone over for lunch where we enjoyed four courses, each paired with a different Moët champagne. We all spent the day there soaking in the sun and enjoying the beauty of Andros. And we are going to have the grand finale this Saturday at the renovated Sunset Resort,” said Ms Allahar.

She believes people traditionally associate Moët with New Year’s, weddings and anniversaries, but they wanted to show their customers that the brand is suitable for all parties and festive occasions, and that every day can turn into a party.

“We figured that these kind of smaller events give people more chances to experience it rather than just jam-pack it into one day. We are excited to see what we can come up with next year to make it even better. Life is a celebration and every day is a special occasion, so that is what we are really trying to show people with these events. It is just exciting to be at any of the events, feel the energy and be around other people who genuinely come out to have a good time, because that is what it is all about,” said Ms Allahar.

Based on the feedback for the events held thus far, she said they are expecting a great turnout tomorrow night for the grand finale.

History, travel & comedy collide in ‘Wonder Trail’ STEVE Hely’s plan is vague: travel south and make lots of stops along the way until he reaches the end of the world. And so begins “The Wonder Trail,” Hely’s account of everything

from the history of the Panama Railway (tragic) to the best sandwiches in South America (they’re in Chile).

After leaving Los Angeles, Hely first stops in Mexico and here gives readers a blueprint for the remainder of the book: rapid-fire, bite-sized parcels of history including tales of explorers, natives, battles, victories and, on occasion, someone being burned alive as a human sacrifice; plus book recommendations, tips on what to see and what to skip, and a handful of notes on the people he encounters along the way. A dozen or so half-page chapters detailing topics such as “Thought That Just Occurred to Me” and “A Nicaraguan Canal” add to the book’s charm, delivering an endearing quality to the read.

The traveller’s observations remain charming and ever hopeful. While he acknowledges the horrors of a country’s past, he always lands on the

‘Burn What Will Burn’: suspenseful, hardboiled crime novel AFTER his wife drowns in a bathtub, a death in which he may have been complicit, Bob Reynolds retreats to a tiny town in the wilds of the Ozark Mountains to hide out and nurse his wounds.

There, he sets up housekeeping in a rustic cabin where he raises chickens, writes poetry and lives off a sizeable family inheritance. But if his plan was to live a simple life, he picked the wrong place.

First, Reynolds finds himself inexplicably drawn to Tammy Fay Smith, an incompetent automobile mechanic with needle tracks on her arms. And then, on one of his long walks along Little Piney Creek, he finds a decaying body bobbing face down in the water.

But when Reynolds returns to the scene with Sheriff Sam Baxter, the body has disappeared.

As Reynolds pokes into the mystery, he accidentally entangles himself in a web of dark, small-town secrets that the locals never want to see exposed. And he soon finds himself both suspected of murder and in danger of becoming the next victim.

The result is a suspenseful, hard-boiled crime novel filled with well-drawn, quirky characters and written in a tight, literary prose style.

“Burn What Will Burn” is CB McKenzie’s second novel following his 2014 debut, “Bad Country,” which won the Tony Hillerman Prize and was a finalist for the Edgar Award.

pleasant, nearly convincing readers that maybe the histories of violence and corruption, plus a few coups are worth this beachside hut that serves decent spaghetti and cold beer. However, because he jumps from city to city so quickly, it’s difficult to invest much emotional energy into the landscapes or people.

Hely’s account can feel like attending a dinner party, cornered by a fellow guest fresh off an adventure, passport still in pocket, so wound up he’s unsure of which story, fact or rumour to regale first. However, if you’re going to be cornered by anyone at a dinner party, Hely is the guy you’d want (except for when he’s high on Amazonian ayahuasca, which he researches, consumes and details thoroughly for readers).

Next Paulo Coelho novel imagines life of Mata Hari PAULO Coelho’s next novel is the imagined inner life of one of history’s most famous and provocative women, Mata Hari.

Alfred A Knopf announced Thursday that Coelho’s “The Spy,” a first-person narrative about the Dutch-born dancer and courtesan, will come out November 22. The book’s starting point is a letter she wrote in 1917, a week before being executed in Paris for alleged espionage during World War I. Coelho will also draw upon archival material released over the past 20 years.

Said Coelho: “Mata Hari was one of our first feminists, defying male expectations of that time and choosing instead an independent, unconventional life.”

Coelho, whose books have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, is best known for the novel “The Alchemist.”

The resurgence of ‘Independence Day’

E will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight.

We’re going to live on. We’re going to survive. Today we celebrate our Independence Day!” So said President Thomas Whitmore, played bt Bill Pullman, in the hit 1996 movie “Independence Day”, which also starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Mary McDonnell and Judd Hirsch.

Now, 20 years later, Pullman returns to resume the fight alongside newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Sela Ward and William Fichtner in the highly anticipated sequel “Independence Day – Resurgence”, which hits theatres this weekend.

While the majority of the old gang have gathered to save the world from another extraterrristeral threat there will be one notable absence – Will Smith, who launched his blockbuster film career as the cigar-loving fighter pilot in “Inpedendence Day”. Unfortunely, he opted out of the sequel.

Twenty years after “Independence Day” its sequel hits theatres this weekend Space Defence (ESD), a united global defense programme that serves as Earth’s early warning system. The main defence force uses technology salvaged from the remains of the alien forces, with military forces assembled on the Moon, Mars and Rhea, and the Area 51 base has become the Space Defence Headquarters. However, the aliens were able to send a distress signal to their other battalions before their final defeat while others went into hiding elsewhere around the world headed by their queen. The film is scheduled to have its world premiere in San Diego at the annual fan convention Comic-Con on July 20, before it hits theaters on July 22, with filmmakers and cast members.

Premiering on Netflix in December is “Trollhunters,” an animated series from Guillermo del Toro. The project, promoted as an ambitious family-friendly series, was previewed just last week in France. Yelchin voices the show’s main character, Jim, who discovers warring trolls living beneath his hometown.

Del Toro said he worked with Yelchin for about a year and called him

a “great creative partner and artist.”

The SUV that rolled down a driveway and killed Yelchin was being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. His 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee pinned him against a mailbox pillar and security fence at his home, Los Angeles police said. The SUV was part of a global recall of 1.1 million vehicles by automaker Fiat Chrysler in April.

Yelchin, whose family emigrated from Russia when he was six months old, began acting as a child. Some of his most acclaimed performances included roles in Nick Cassavetes’ crime drama “Alpha Dog,” Drake Doremus’ romance “Like Crazy”, “Charlie Bartlett” with Robert Downey Jr, and Jeremy Saulnier’s punk band-siege film “Green Room,” released in April.

mailboats ABOUT THE AUTHOR

CAPTAIN Eric Wiberg is a marine and naval historian, author and a maritime lawyer who grew up in Nassau in the 1970s and 1980s and is a regular visitor to The Bahamas.

In 2009 Capt Wiberg began the first of three books on U-Boats in the Bahamas and Bermuda and in 2012 began a blog focusing on mailboats and their contribution to Bahamian history. He is the author of ‘Tanker Disasters’, ‘Round the World in the Wrong Season’ and ‘U-Boats in the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos’ and is working on a book about mailboats in the Bahamas.

He is writing a series in The Tribune on the glorious history of mailboats, their place in island life, the characters that define them, the variety of craft, the dozens of islands they serve, the mailboat ‘dynasties’ and the challenges facing the modern fleet.

he modern type of mailboat has numerous advantages over its predecessors, the wooden and the European

models.

Wooden vessels were generally sail-powered, subject to the vagaries of wind, waves and current. Wooden boats leak and wooden boats fitted with cantankerous machinery tended to leak a lot more. Wood is also a lot less resistant to rot and reefs than steel. Planks tend to break and it only takes a few of them to cause a sinking.

The European ships were designed for the rivers, canals and coasts of northern Europe. They tended to be long and thin and deeper in draft than required for the Bahamas. They also had low decklines between the wheelhouses aft and the bow, which could be swamped in the open waters of the southern Bahamas, damaging cargo and harming passengers. Finally, they tended to be single-engine, meaning that if something went wrong with one engine, the ship would be disabled. Single engine vessels are also more difficult to control in port and whilst docking.

Photo: Steve Wilcox as having at least one engine, being built of steel fairly recently in the US Gulf or Florida, and having cargo derricks or cranes on the forward decks, or roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) capabilities for vehicles. The design can be traced to the mid1980s and vessels like the North Cat Island Special and the Champion II, small, stout ships, custom-built for the Bahamas mail, passenger and cargo trade. Roughly 75 feet long and only six feet deep, they were built of steel, under 100 tons, and powered as a general rule by twin diesel engines.

Champion II’s builder, Captain Earnest Dean, admitted he built her small to get into the US market with less paperwork. Vessels like the Grand Master were built exclusively for the Bahamas market at almost twice the size - 214 tons, longer, wider, stronger and capable of withstanding bigger seas. For over 30 years this design has dominated and makes up roughly half of the present fleet, although there were decades of change between the 70s to 90s during which all manner of craft repurposed ferries, fishing vessels, offshore supply boats, landing craft, etc - were used.

It is strong, seaworthy, shallow, manoeuverable, stable and thus comfortable, can work its own cargo, get into and out of hard-toreach shallow docks, and if it goes aground on a reef, chances are (as many instances have proven) the steel hull will remain intact and the relatively flat bottom will keep it upright until it can be salvaged. The only disadvantage is that unlike the ro-ro variety, modern mailboats cannot simply motor nose-first to the Continued on page 24

I thought this penultimate feature in The Tribune’s series would be one of the easiest to write - identify and describe some 20 vessels still sailing but it is not. If you search online for a mailboat schedule (it is called the “inter-insular mail-boat schedule” in government parlance), the most recent one, on a government website, is a decade old and lists several vessels (Lady D, which sank in 2014, and United Star, sold to Honduras after a collision, and Bimini Mack, replaced by the Sherice M) no longer operating in the Bahamas.

If you were to spend a week ‘mailboat spotting’ at Potter’s Cay - the only place in the Bahamas where more than two congregate at a time - you would not be disappointed.” on a mailboat, the best way to prepare is to visit the friendly dock master on Potter’s Cay Dock in Nassau - at the eastern end. The team there will cheerfully photocopy that week’s actual schedule for you, for free. Armed with that information you should be able to locate the vessel/s of interest and if the boat is in, wander down to ask a few questions about schedules directly with the officers or crew. That way you are less likely to be disappointed by arriving long before a departure - or worse, after the boat has left.

Even after riding mailboats for some 35 years (we are planning a voyage to Ragged Island this August) and studying these sturdy craft from afar

Lady Emerald, passenger, in middle heading back home to the Southern Bahamas. for the past five or so years, there is a vessel operating today that I know nothing about: the Lady Katherina (or Kathreina). I cannot find a single image of her and only gather that she has served Mangrove Cay, Moxey Town and Lisbon Creek, Andros, for over a decade, and that the trip takes six hours and costs $45. Other boats serve the Androsian ports of Mangrove Cay, Fresh Creek, Smith’s Bay, Kemps Bay, Long Bay and The Bluff.

Overall there are nearly 50 ports in the archipelago, situated on 20 of the larger islands which a fleet of around 20 mailboats serves today. From Bimini and Grand Bahama to the north to the many ports of Eleuthera, Chub Cay, Farmer’s Cay and Bullock’s Harbour in the Berry Islands, several ports in Abaco, including Hard Bargain, Staniel Cay, Black Point and other settlements

in Exuma as well as Georgetown, each can expect a weekly or at least monthly mailboat call. Then Rum Cay and San Salvador, Abraham’s Bay, Mayaguana, the length of Long Island, Crooked and Acklins islands as well as Long or Fortune Cay between them, and Mathew Town, Inagua, are all covered, as is Duncan Town, Ragged Island.

The 20 or so workhorses which accomplished the logistics of delivering people, goods, vehicles, vessels and creatures to and from the islands are similar but of course, like their hybrid wooden and European predecessors, not the same. Nine of these vessels are the modern ro-ro type popularised by landing craft in World War II and well suited to the shallow islands of the Bahamas due to their low draught and ability to dock, discharge and load with minimum shore-side infrastructure; often a simple bulldozed mound or earth would suffice for a ramp (as an additional advantage, the hull, or draught forward is about half as deep as the stern, which carries the engine and fuel and is thus a lot heavier).

The names of some of the new generation of ro-ro ships are Fiesta Mail (China-built and unique), Sea Spirit II (ex-United Spirit), Island Link, Lady Rosalind II, KCT and her substitute VI Nais, East Wind and New G, which was delivered to Bahamas for Captain Tom Hanna in early 2015. The oldest in the present fleet is also the only holdover to wooden mailboats: the Current Pride. Though we have many photos of this vessel, I don’t know when, where or by whom she was built - presumably in north Eleuthera or Abaco in the 1960s or 1970s.

Are mailboats as essential and vibrant today as they have been for over 200 years? Yes, they are as vibrant as ever.

To illustrate the point: if you were to spend a week “mailboat spotting” at Potter’s Cay - the only place in the Bahamas where more than two congregate at a time - you would not be disappointed. On Monday you would see the Bahamas Daybreak III sail for North Eleuthera, then the (New) Eleuthera Express heading out for South Eleuthera, followed by the Captain Moxey that evening, serving South Andros. The Fiesta Mailboat would set off for Freeport at dusk, and before midnight the KCT or VI Nais push off for a long voyage to Acklins and Crooked islands.

Lance, doing what his father did, takes off for Georgetown mid-afternoon as well, followed shortly by either Captain Emmett or Island Link, for northern Long Island (Seymours, Deadman’s Cay, Salt Pond).

That very day Legacy takes an overnight passage to Abaco’s capital and Hope Town and Green Turtle Cay. Captain C heads for Ragged Island via several Exuma cays and Captain Gurth Dean heads into the night for the Abaco islands via the Berries. The Lady Francis heads for San Salvador and Rum Cay, and Lady Mathilda for Mayaguana and Inagua. Lady Emerald sails for Smith’s Bay, Cay Island, as well as San Salvador and Rum Cay. On Wednesdays the Bahamas Daybreak III has returned from south Eleuthera and heads for the northern portion of the island.

The Fiesta Mailboat has likewise returned to Nassau and goes back to Freeport, as she will three times a week. Lady Rosalind heads west for north Andros later in the afternoon. The following evening she is off again, this time for northern Cat Island Arthur’s Town, Dumfries, Orange Creek and Bennett’s Harbour. That evening the Sherice M heads for Bimini via Cat Cay and Chub Cay in the Berry Islands. Current Pride makes for Hatchet Bay and The Bluff, Eleuthera, and the (New) Eleuthera Express under Captain Junior Pinder heads for nearby Spanish Wells and Harbour Island. At 2am the Lady Katherina heads for Mangrove Cay, Moxey Town and Lisbon Creek, Andros, arriving at dawn.

On Fridays and at the weekends things cool down on the docks as vessels come

back to roost. At 10am the Fiesta Mailboat returns to Freeport for the Taylor family of Mayaguana, often with a Bahamian band to entertain weekend passengers. That evening the Captain C returns, followed by the Captain Gurth Dean and 12 hours later the Fiesta again. Lady Francis folds its wings on Friday morning, right after the Legacy returns from Abaco. On Saturday Lady Emerald returns from the southern islands, followed by the Lady Mathilda from even further afield in Inagua. The Daybreak comes back on Sunday at 4pm, preceded that morning by the Sherice M from Bimini.

The (New) Eleuthera Express comes back just after noon, then the Fiesta. Finally Lady Rosalind returns from Cat Island.

One defining feature of these myriad voyages is that you can rely on comfortable, if by no means luxurious, accommodation, running water, shared plumbing, three meals a day, good company, and by pretty much any standard, very reasonable rates of between $25 (Current Pride) and $90 (Lady Mathilda) per passage - not bad considering the distances travelled. But remember, don’t rely on the internet, or even the newspapers to figure out mailboats: the real experts are the men and women operating them, and the real experience begins right under our noses, on Potter’s Cay Dock or the nearest government dock in the community you live in.

he first time I noticed the grave of Paul A Meeres, in the Eastern Cemetery, I imagined the man who I met in the late 1950s at his Over-the-Hill nightclub called Chez Paul Meeres.

In my photograph, I included the grave of Robert Barnes Shepherd, for no other reason than to make it easier to pinpoint the location, but the two are ‘connected’.

There were, in fact, two superb Bahamian showmen, Paul Meeres Sr and Paul Meeres Jr and it is often said that Paul Sr was the illegitimate son of a Rector of Christ Church Cathedral.

This photograph shows that the rumour skipped one generation.

The Rev C E Meeres was the father of the man in this grave, Paul Aitken Meeres, who married Elsa Michelson and, together, produced two daughters, Paula and Rosemund. Paul A Meeres was also the father of Preston Paul Meeres, who became known as Paul Meeres Sr. Preston Meeres put the Bahamas on the entertainment map in Paris and Europe. He gave a command performance at Buckingham Palace, for the King of England. Later, he used the name Paul and starred with the great Josephine Baker, at the Folies Bergère.

When he came back home to Nassau, he immersed himself in

the entertainment business, including a cinema and night clubs.

My friend, Berkley Taylor, tells of being at the club, as very little boy of four, and saying to Paul Sr: “I can sing and dance better than you.” Whereupon Meeres Sr lifted the small boy onto the stage and told the audience that “this little peanut thinks he can do better than I”.

Thus did Berkley become ‘Peanuts’ Taylor, and develop into the world-famous drummer.

There are no inscriptions to show it, but this Meeres grave is also the final resting place of Elsa Elizabeth (Michelson) Meeres (1881-1964), Paula Margaret Meeres (1914-1997) and Rosemund Mary Meeres (1923-2014) and Robert Barnes Shepherd is, in fact, the second husband of Elsa’s mother. To complete the record, Elsa’s father - Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931) - is the most famous of all. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, for having measured the speed of light, placing him just slightly behind Albert Einstein.

These are just two of many graves “with stories to tell”. Just a few feet to the south is the northern wall of Nassau’s Jewish Cemetery, the existence of which comes as a surprise to many. Its entrance is on Shirley Street.

T

he Bahamas Humane Society was recently given a wonderful surprise by one of our most faithful of supporters.

As you all may have noticed, Bahamas Waste garbage trucks have been sporting a new livery lately. The garbage trucks are artfully decorated with the logos and slogans of local charities that are considered worthy of that honour.

So far the company has dressed their trucks to honour the fight against breast cancer for the Bahamas Cancer Society, and shown support for the he Bahamas National Trust, national pride, autism and, now the Bahamas Humane Society – pushing the message of being kind to animals, to spay and neuter, and to adopt, not shop.

In fact, this wonderful initiative has the BHS on one side of the truck and our “sister” group BAARK on the other side, along with the BHS “Operation Potcake” initiative on the back.

This gesture made by Bahamas Waste towards worthy charities in the Bahamas is a fantastic example of how the private sector can get involved with national matters that affect all citizens of the Bahamas.

Charities such as the Bahamas Humane Society are always looking for unusual and original ways to get our name out there and to spread our message. Of course, we always need monetary donations as well. However, if people do not know who we are, or what we actually do, then they will probably not be interested in giving us money in the first place. Every time the BHS/BAARK truck drives around the island somebody new will see it; they will read the slogans, see the

Q&A This week, Jack Hardy answers questions by some of his avid readers and gives advice to hobby gardeners.

: Good morning, Mr Hardy.

This past week I have found myself spending 15 minutes each and every morning scooping up the dozens of millipedes (black wormlike insects) that somehow gain access to my home overnight. It is no exaggeration to say I collect approximately 20 to 30 of them from my living room/kitchen floor, and when I throw them out I am met by another 100 or so crawling up the outside walls. Is there anything I can do to rid my property of these worms?

: Dear CD, Millipedes are totally harmless and do not bite or sting. They live on rotting vegetation and thereby perform the same function above ground that earthworms perform below ground. It could be that dry conditions are forcing your millipedes to enter your house where – lemming-like – they will certainly die as they need very humid conditions in which to survive.

To stop them reaching your house you could spray around the access perimeter with any insecticide you have

The infestation will not last forever (though it may seem that way to you). I have noted several agglomerations of millipedes in the Marsh Harbour area, one of them at the post office that caused people to pick their way carefully towards their mail boxes.

: Dear Jack, I remember reading about the loquat in an old column of yours which turned up recently. This was one of my favourite fruits and we had one in our garden when I was growing up. Then, unfortunately, it seemed they had wasps (or some insect) laying their eggs in them in later years so we could barely find one that was not infected. I suppose this pest must have been imported here. I do recall also while growing up some friends who lived on Queen Street (where the US Embassy is now located) had a few of these trees in their backyard. I was always thrilled when they were in season and the fruits were very large, too. I think his wife, who was originally from Bermuda, must have brought them from there. I recall her speaking of making jam with them.

I was very interested in your comments about the moringa tree. It was only recently that I started hearing of all its many benefits. We actually have a tree and it looks particularly lovely at the moment, but it is very sensitive and the moment we have a northwester it loses all its leaves. The trunk is very old so I would think the tree must have been there some decades. I think it is a very graceful looking tree, especially

when the white flowers appear.

We also had our recent showing of the yellow (and pink) poui. It’s a shame their flowering period is so short. Once the flowers are gone I find the tree quite unattractive, especially the yellow variety. Also, most of the ones along Blake Road (on the way to airport) are all lopsided and horizontal as they never bothered to stake them after some hurricane. They put a load of plants in the area of Go-Slow Bend before the meeting of the International Development Bank and they all look dried out, which is such a shame. An acquaintance told me he saw water trucks spraying in the area several times, and now the rains have started in earnest perhaps they will pick up.

They also planted impractical things like those orange bromeliads which will be burned up by the first northwester.

I suppose somebody got paid very well for all this, but it seems such a waste of money. The area did need attention, but seagrapes or something like that would have been far more practical.

: Dear CK, I rarely visit Nassau, but a few years ago (getting my US visa straight) I was driven from the airport into town and was aghast at the roadside plantings.

There were so many stands of palm varieties in full sun and suffering. People tend to think all palms are sun lovers, but many of them grow in forest shade.

None of that on the airport road.

: Dear Mr Hardy, It isn’t often we read a page in the newspaper these days which gives us such pleasure. Therefore we decided to say

a ‘thank you’ for the great article on the coconut palm tree. It was most interesting to read of the different stages and to explain to us why they were being replaced by the golden coconut.

Our special delight is in making ice cream, but we find it very hard to find coconuts with jelly in them because, as you mention, they make a delightful drink for the tourists. And the true ice cream recipe demands both the water and the jelly, as I am sure you know.

: Dear OS, Thank you for your kind words. I love making ice cream, too; my favourite being soursop. Guava and passion fruit are also delicious. You remind me that I have not made coconut ice cream for quite a while. Luckily, here on Abaco we can easily get jelly coconuts. I’ll remember you when I dig my spoon in!

: Dear Mr Hardy, I look forward with pleasure to reading your article every week. Last week you talked about mangoes so I hope you don’t mind me asking a mango related question. I have planted one which I grew from seed and it is doing very well. It is nine months since I planted the seed. It has leaves on the main stem then it branches out at the top.

My question is, should I pick these leaves off or leave them as they are?

The plant is now just under three feet tall. I know nothing about what type of mango it is as it was given me out of the garden of a lady I was looking after.

I do know they were the best mangoes I had ever tasted though. Thank you again for your interesting and enjoyable articles.

: Dear EH, Do not pick off any leaves unless they are dead or diseased. I have bad news and worse news for you. Bad: The seed you planted will not give you the same fruit you enjoyed. Worse: It will take a minimum of seven years to produce and often up to 12 years before giving a decent harvest.
