THE PEOPLE’S PAPER: PRICE–$1

$1M EMBASSY MAKEOVER BILL

By KHRISNA RUSSELL and LEANDRA ROLLE

LABOUR and Immigration Minister Keith Bell yesterday accused the Minnis administration of the “indiscriminate callous haemorrhage” of the public purse to buy extravagant furnishings and decor for an ambassador’s apartment in Europe. He said more than $1m was spent on lavish items, including middle chairs that cost nearly $40,000, a rug at $18,475, $14,000 for a lamp and $10,000 for a mahogany scroll among other costly purchases. And while the items were

being bought as part of a renovation of this ambassador’s apartment, Mr Bell said the official, whom he did not name, stayed in an expensive hotel at a cost of $20,000 per month. The renovations at $550,000 or 644,161 euros, together with the hotel stay racked up more than $1m in costs, the minister claimed in the House of Assembly. He made the revelations during his contribution to the 2022/2023 budget debate yesterday. “Recently I have seen and I have it here to table if needed an invoice for an ambassador’s residence SEE PAGE FOUR

PEOPLE living in emergency dome houses at Abaco will soon be given a deadline to leave the temporary structures, Transport and Housing Minister Jobeth ColebyDavis announced yesterday. Earlier this month, The Tribune reported that some families allocated domes in the wake of Hurricane Dorian have been subletting them to pocket the

rent money. There have also been reports that dome structures were being used as brothels, prompting officials to investigate the claims. While delivering her budget contribution in the House of Assembly yesterday, Mrs Coleby-Davis advised MPs that many people living in the domes now were not placed there for Dorian-related purposes. TWO cruise ships that have been under arrest in Bahamian waters for more than four months were yesterday sold for a combined $128m via auction. Richard Horton, attorney and partner at Alexiou, Knowles and Company, who represented the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony’s secured financier,

THE CRYSTAL SERENITY confirmed that the vessels were sold for $103m and $25m respectively. “For the Serenity, the total amount paid for the vessel was $103m. The
