Minister met Smith accuser

Joyann Ferguson-Pratt, said he met with Barbara Hanna at his constituency office between late May/ early June of last year, after she was referred to him by Health Minister Dr Duane Sands. Mr Dames said Dr Sands approached him initially and informed him of Mrs Hanna’s desire to speak with him, as well as the nature of her concerns, which involved alleged corruption on Smith’s part. Mr Miller said he does not support VAT being raised to 12 percent, adding families across the country could not afford the tax hike. Mr Miller said his constituents have advised the increase is too high and should be implemented incrementally. Mr Miller yesterday joined Centreville MP Reece Chipman and Pineridge MP Frederick McAlpine, all members of the Free National Movement, who have opposed the move. SEE PAGE SIX

AS HE warned gaming house operators the Minnis administration will “dig up” any underground operations, Attorney General Carl Bethel said the government’s inalienable right to impose tax rates however it sees fit will be defended. And in defending this right, Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest insisted the government will not be bullied by threats of legal action from operators. The Cabinet ministers pushed back yesterday on the heels of instructions from the Bahamas Gaming Operators Association to their attorney Wayne Munroe, QC, to take the government to court over the new proposed sliding tax scale. The latest incident

occurred just after 5pm at Cox Street in Fox Hill when a gunman from a silver-coloured car opened fire on a group sitting under a tent, wounding two men, one of whom died at the scene and the other is in hospital. A few hours earlier, shortly after 4.30am, police said a security guard on duty at AF Adderley Junior High was accosted and then attacked by two armed assailants.

Police said at some point during this interaction, the security officer was shot in his body and died at the scene. Police have identified the victim as 65-year-old Errol Williams. At a press conference yesterday at police headquarters, Assistant Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander said
