FINAL COUNTDOWN TO A NEW REALITY D’Aguilar warns phased reopening must show we can meet July 1 targets By TANYA SMITH-CARTWRIGHT ts-cartwright @tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas’ tourism industry will begin a phased opening on June 15 when boaters, yachters and private pilots will be allowed into the country, the Ministry of Tourism announced yesterday. The industry’s much anticipated full opening will take place on July 1. Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar made the announcement at a Zoom press conference

held by his ministry and the Tourism Readiness and Recovery Committee. “This phased approach will start on June 15, when boaters, yachters and private aviation will be invited to experience The Bahamas destination,” Mr D’Aguilar said. “Tourism will begin with these smaller, special interest groups as they provide a more controlled segment to test its measure. These groups will have to pre-register electronically, allowing health officials to determine their risk level.” SEE PAGE THREE

MARINAS HOPING TO SAVE 75% OF SUMMER SEASON By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net

BAHAMIAN marina operators yesterday hailed the sector’s June 15 reopening as potentially “saving 75 percent” of the summer season, adding: “Our phones are ringing off the hook.” Joseph Dargavage, managing partner at Harbour Island’s Romora Bay Resort & Marina, said the government’s decision to permit the industry to lead tourism’s revival two weeks ahead of other segments had paved the way for a

“sold-out July”. Revealing that the property plans to recall all 40 staff who were laid-off due to the COVID19 pandemic, he added that Romora Bay wanted to be “a leader and set the example for other resorts” when it came to implementing the necessary health protocols and safety measures. “As of right now, if all goes as planned, we will have a sold-out July and probably a very busy second half of June following all the protocols,” Mr Dargavage told this newspaper.

THE Ministry of the Environment and Housing reactivated a task force on Friday to deal with the re-emergence of the cane toad in western New Providence. The task force, which began meeting yesterday, is made up of government representatives and private sector groups. This comes after ministry officials received

THE CANE TOAD confirmation that the toad was spotted in west New Providence.

The cane toad was previously identified in 2013 in Lyford Cay and was believed to have entered the country by way of imported plant material. “When originally identified, an intense and deliberate action was taken by government, NGOs and private citizens to launch an intense day and night ‘seek and destroy’ mission against the toad.
