Belt beating girl taken into care Teen victim of barbaric assault taken off family By KHRISNA RUSSELL Deputy Chief Reporter krussell@tribunemedia.net A GIRL severely beaten by her guardians in videos that recently went viral has been taken into the custody of the state, The Tribune understands. An official at the Ministry of Social Services said she is most likely residing in a children’s home. The footage of her beating earlier this month sparked a divisive debate about corporal punishment in the country. Police Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash said yesterday authorities are still investigating her
case and have not yet determined if anyone will be charged with a crime. A one-minute, 30-second video first posted to Facebook showed the young girl being punched in her head by a woman, beaten with a belt and struck with a stick for “coming home late”. Another video of the girl being beaten - not previously reported in the media - was also posted to Facebook. That time, she was beaten repeatedly and savagely with a belt by a man. At one point she cried that she would “fall out”. SEE PAGE THREE

The first incident, involving an eight-year-old girl, happened on Bahama Avenue off Baillou Hill Road on April 28. The second incident, involving a 12-year-old girl, happened on May 14 on Darling Street off Wulff Road near the Stephen Dillet Primary School.
By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Staff Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net A JURY in the Coroner’s Court ruled last week Wednesday that the death of 25-year-old Christopher Turnquest in a 2016 boating incident involving the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) was “accidental,” not the result of negligence by defence force officers. Mr Turnquest’s mother, Dale Turnquest, said yesterday the family will appeal the ruling. “I feel like I failed my son,” she said in a statement to The Tribune. Mr Turnquest was in a 13-foot skiff east off Potter’s Cay Dock around 8pm on October 2, 2016 when his vessel was struck by an
administration for Mr Henfield who railed against the bill when the Christie administration introduced it in the lead-up to the 2017 general election. The bill passed the House of Assembly last week. A post on Mr Henfield’s Twitter page said: “It should be clear where one stands today on an issue that one vehemently fought SEE PAGE NINE
