Miller understands people removing trees in Carmichael By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net ENVIRONMENT Minister Vaughn Miller expressed empathy for people who have been unlawfully removing trees in the Carmichael area yesterday, saying he too once considered illegally acquiring Crown land due to frustration with the grant system.
His comment came as environmental officials expressed concern about the deforestation activities in the southern area of New Providence. Danielle Hanek, the Acting Director of Forestry, said officials estimate that 500 acres of land have been cleared since last July and officials are searching for the culprits who will be subject to penalties. ‘THOUSANDS’ BACKLOGGED IN LAND APPLICATIONS By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net
THE land manager at the Department of Lands and Surveys says the backlog of applications for Crown Land is in the thousands and wants government to suspend the application process so people who have never been approved for a Crown Land grant can get a response. Mark Darville’s comments came during the weekly press conference
at the Office of the Prime Minister. Expected to talk about how the Crown Land grant process should work, he lambasted the system, calling it antiquated and in need of dramatic overhaul. “I think they should’ve done a cut off (for applications), just cut off for a bit to accommodate people who at least never had Crown Land before because you know we have people who get land repeatedly and you should deal with people who had never SEE PAGE THREE

By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net THE government’s selfproclaimed $1bn in tax arrears must not become an excuse for failing to “bite the bullet” on reform, said private sector tax chief Gowon Bowe yesterday,
describing such thinking as “a fool’s errand”. Mr Bowe said even if the government was to collect 100 percent of that sum it would still come nowhere near to wiping-out the $2bn-plus deficits incurred over Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19’s peak. FULL STORY - SEE BUSINESS
SANDS WARNS ON RISE IN COVID CASES By LEANDRA ROLLE Tribune Staff Reporter lrolle@tribunemedia.net FREE National Movement Chairman Dr Duane Sands has raised concerns about the recent uptick of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, insisting the true number of infections could be higher. Dr Sands claimed that this is due to “a substantial number” of unreported positive rapid antigen tests.
DR DUANE SANDS Currently, RT-PCR tests are used as the gold standard to determine COVID-19 infection in The
Bahamas. The tests, which are also more costly, are the only ones reported in the nation’s daily COVID-19 dashboard. Speaking to The Tribune yesterday, Dr Sands said it is now time for the government to consider including positive results of antigen tests in the nation’s daily dashboard to provide Bahamians with an accurate picture of the nation’s true COVID state.
