He told The Tribune yesterday he plans to position the country as a leader in encouraging debt forgiveness for small, developing countries that are most susceptible to effects of climate change and said he will
raise the issue at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Egypt later this year. Mr Davis, while discussing the issue recently at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum in Miami, said trying to recover from natural disasters has added $5bn to the national debt in the past five years. “I don’t know that much attention has been paid to the small island developing states in the world,” he said. ECONOMIC Affairs Minister Michael Halkitis maintained on Friday that removing value added tax on breadbasket items is not feasible at this time, noting the tax regime was a necessary initiative meant to reduce government borrowing and improve the nation’s overall “fiscal health”.
Mr Halkitis was responding to increased calls for the government to eliminate VAT on breadbasket items, which had been zero-rated under the former Minnis administration. MOTHER DIES IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT By PAVEL BAILEY

A YOUNG mother is dead while two children and a man are in hospital following a traffic accident in western New Providence on Saturday night. Police said officers were alerted to the incident at the junction of Cambridge Avenue and West Bay Street shortly after 10pm. Officers from the Traffic Division found a white 2007 Nissan Bluebird in the median with extensive damage. Police also said a man was inside the vehicle in the driver’s seat complaining of injuries while an unresponsive woman was in the front passenger seat.

A MAN who was shot while sitting on a wall died in hospital on Saturday, police said. Police said they were alerted to the sounds of gunshots in the area of Malcolm Road east in New Providence around 12.15am that day. Responding officers were told that a group of people were sitting on a wall when a dark vehicle pulled up. An occupant discharged a firearm in their direction. As a result, a man was shot several times about his body.
