Govt to buy GB airport in deal seen as vital to save ravaged economy By KHRISNA RUSSELL Tribune Chief Reporter krussell@tribunemedia.net GRAND Bahama International Airport will be purchased at a cost of under $1m by the Airport Authority, it was announced yesterday. Tourism and Aviation Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar told Parliament that while the Authority is purchasing the airport at a price of “one dollar,” the authority will also assume a portion of staff related costs. These costs, he said, were not expected to exceed $1m. However, Mr D’Aguilar told Members of Parliament a new airport will cost between $40m and $50m to
be constructed. Government will seek to enter into a public private partnership to assist in the rebuilding effort, Mr D’Aguilar said. His announcement was welcomed by government MPs, but was met with criticism by former Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna Martin. Not only did the Englerston MP demand that details of the impending purchase be laid on the table of the House of Assembly, but she said the minister should have revealed what motivated owners, Hutchinson Whampoa, to agree to sell the facility. ‘DON’T WANT OIL DRILLING - NOW’S TIME TO PROVE IT’ By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net ENVIRONMENTALISTS yesterday challenged the Minnis administration to make good on its pledge to bar oil drilling after the Bahamas Petroleum Company (BPC) revealed it will seek to renew its four licences. Activists said they plan “to coerce the Government as much as possible” to reject the oil explorer’s bid for a three-year renewal that would commit it to drilling another exploratory
well within The Bahamas’ territorial waters during that period. Besides calling on the Prime Minister and his Cabinet to live up to their publicly professed opposition to oil exploration, the environmental groups argued it would be inappropriate to approve BPC’s application until their Judicial Review action challenging the permits it received for its first Perseverance One exploratory is ruled upon by the Supreme Court. By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net PRIME Minister Dr Hubert Minnis revealed that a planned housing programme geared towards young professionals will include certain exemptions such as waived customs duty on building materials and appliances and real property tax exemption for up to two years after the homes have been constructed.
He gave notice in the House of Assembly last night that a resolution to develop an affordable “upscale” community for young people in the western area of New Providence will be debated at the next sitting of the House. The government is determined “to make it a priority to make land more accessible and affordable to young Bahamians,” the resolution says. SEE PAGE FOUR
FAMILY DISMISSES NURSE’S ‘VACCINE’ DEATH FRONT PORCH By TANYA SMITHCARTWRIGHT tsmith-cartwright@ tribunemedia.net RELATIVES of Nurse Marsha McQueen have denied social media claims that she died shortly after receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. On Tuesday, local website Bahamas Press posted the claims along with a photo of Nurse McQueen, alleging she died of a heart
NURSE MARSHA MCQUEEN attack and was a recipient of the vaccine. The website also posted the story on its social media pages.
While trying to cope with her sister’s sudden passing, Maude Smith decided to put an end to the circulating rumours of her sister’s death. She said: “Based on everything that we know, she has not taken the vaccine shot,” she said. “She did not have the vaccine. Nothing like that. We don’t know if she had a heart attack like they say, but as it is now, SEE PAGE FOUR
