Maynard on the warpath - again ‘My people must operate new engines - or else’ By KHRISNA RUSSELL Deputy Chief Reporter krussell@tribunemedia.net BAHAMAS Electrical Workers Union president Paul Maynard yesterday threatened “dark days are ahead” as he waged war against Bahamas Power & Light and Wärtsilä, the newly contracted firm slated to build a $95m electricity plant this year. “It will be a cold day in hell, before I, Paul Maynard, allow Wärtsilä to come on a plant that the Bahamian people is paying

$95m for and send my staff home,” the union chief told The Tribune yesterday in a harsh rebuke of BPL and the Finnish technology group. This comes after BPL CEO Whitney Heastie announced a contract had been signed between the electricity provider and Wärtsilä. The firm will build a 132-megawatt plant, powered by seven high efficiency engines at Clifton Pier. They plan to finish installation by the end of this summer.

POLICE yesterday denied claims the eightyear-old girl abducted early Sunday morning had been sexually assaulted. A 30-YEAR-OLD man is dead following another traffic accident, the sixth victim in a little over a week. While the deceased has not been identified, The Tribune understands he is Clarence Dean Jr. He is the 12th traffic fatality of the year, according to police. Police said Dean was riding a motorcycle with a female passenger shortly after 3am yesterday. The two were reportedly travelling south on East Street when the deceased failed to stop at a traffic light and collided with a GMC Silverado truck travelling west on Soldier Road. BAHAMIAN officials have made a commitment to being the first country by 2030 to eradicate the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), especially in regaining footing as the world’s leader in low mother-to-child transmission. Health Minister Dr Duane Sands made the statement yesterday when he told reporters that officials had lost some ground on the transmission from mother to child.
