MP’S FIRM FIGHTING $450K BLAZE CLAIM By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net
FIRE destroyed four residential units in Harbour Island when an unlicensed gas company owned and operated by North Eleuthera MP Rickey Mackey performed services there in June 2018, plaintiffs allege in court documents. An affidavit by a former inspector at the Ministry of Works claims Mr Mackey’s company, Eleuthera Petroleum Limited, did not have the dealer’s or sub-dealer’s licence that is required to sell, store and convey liquified petroleum gas to the public, nor did his employees have the installer’s licence required to connect, disconnect or fill
liquified containers. Contravening the licensing requirements of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Act makes a person liable on summary conviction to a $3,000 fine, 12 months imprisonment or both, according to the law. Plaintiffs entered a $450,646.96 default judgement against Eleuthera Petroleum Ltd last year and had the Royal Bank of Canada account connected to the company frozen. Eleuthera Petroleum is now seeking to strike out the judgement, with its lawyers arguing that COVID-19 prevented the company from submitting a timely defence in the case.
By LEANDRA ROLLE Tribune Staff Reporter lrolle@tribunemedia.net THE Progressive Liberal Party wants the government to adopt new COVID-19 prevention measures that allows for more virus testing and isolation to help prevent a third wave in the country. In a statement released yesterday, PLP leader Phillip “Brave” Davis urged the Minnis administration to learn from its past “mistakes” and act now
before it is too late to safeguard the country against the new, more contagious COVID-19 strains spreading worldwide. He also said the country could not afford to return to lockdowns, which will only further damage the nation’s economy. “The government has mismanaged the crisis and the economy is in worse shape as a result,” the opposition leader said yesterday. DOCTORS Hospital’s president last night said a $13.5m Canadian investment will accelerate the launch of a Grand Bahama care facility “comparable to our New Providence” assets by 2022. Dr Charles Diggiss told Tribune Business that the equity injection by Torontobased Fairfax Financial Holdings will enable the BISX-listed healthcare provider to quicken an expansion pace that will take it “beyond the borders of The Bahamas” and into the wider Caribbean by 2025. Fairfax Financial, whose main interests lie in insurance and reinsurance investments stretching around the world, is acquiring two million Doctors Hospital shares at $6.75 per share. THEY’re just an ordinary couple, the groom born in The Bahamas, his wife in Jamaica. Now married for ten years they have been waiting for one thing - for someone to sign off on her application for citizenship. Someone, somewhere, without ever providing an explanation said no. Why? All they have met in trying to force an answer is a wall of silence. For the full story see Insight: Page 8
SPACE DEBRIS FOUND ON BEACH A STRANGE titanium ball covered in Russian text has been discovered on a beach in Harbour Island. British woman, Manon Clarke, spotted the 41kg reflective ball poking out of the sand while she was walking with her family last Wednesday evening. “We went walking to a different spot than usual and I noticed this silver shiny moon thing poking out the sand,”
THE OBJECT found in Harbour Island. the 24-year-old told The Independent. “We could see the Russian writing on the side, so
we started digging away to see more of it, which was a bit of a bold move given that we had no idea what it was.” Space experts believe that the ball could be a Hydrazine Propellant Tank for a satellite or spacecraft, though uncertainty remains about where it came from and how it came to be on the beach.
