DAY three of the Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic traditionally produced the first group of eliminations and the introduction of Family Island teams in the annual tournament as the field starts to dwindle headed into mid-term break for most schools. The defending champion Tabernacle Baptist Falcons highlighted yesterday’s first session with a 30-point win in their tournament debut, 58-28 over the CV Bethel Stingrays. Deangelo Regis Cooper had a team-high 10 points, Joshua Dames and Shyrone Kemp each added eight and Romad Dean

finished with seven. Raymond McDonald led the Stingrays with a game-high 15 points. The Falcons led 9-0 after the first three minutes. And 15-4 when point guard Desmond Butler went down with an apparent knee injury. Butler would not return, but the Falcons had little trouble making a statement in their first game. Tabernacle led 34-8 at the half and 47-14 headed into the third quarter. The Falcons led wire-to-wire and a 26-point run at one point pushed the lead to as much as 38. The St George’s Jaguars followed the Falcons’ performance with a second consecutive win for a Grand Bahama team with

a 56-31 victory over the Agape Christian Academy Eagles out of Abaco. Rick Russell had 12 to lead the Jaguars, Kingcy Thompson finished with 10 while Christopher Johnson and Theodore Grant each finished with eight. Just three Eagles players scored in the game, led by Regan Roberts’ 12 points. St George’s led 8-0 before the first timeout, and Agape went much of the first quarter without a shot attempt as they had trouble bypassing the halfcourt trap. The lead reached 14-0 before the Eagles scored their first basket of the game and ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run. Agape actually cut the lead 14-8, before George’s

went on a 10-0 run and built on that momentum to put the game away for good. The Jaguars’ lead reached as much as 39 in the second half. In the lone elimination game of the day, the Temple Christian Suns were able to survive and advance with a 56-51 win over Mt Carmel Cavaliers. Dayton Albury led the Suns with 13 points while Christian Sturrup and Nicholas Jones each finished with nine. Jermaine Williams led the Cavaliers and all scorers with 23 points and Eugene Neely added 15. The Suns led by 10 late in the second quarter, but the Cavs began a run that carried over into the third.

They eventually tied the game at 31 and exchanged baskets for ties again at 35, 37 and 41. Mt Carmel scored six consecutive, four from Gregory McKay to go ahead 47-41. Kirkwood Smith, one of several junior players for the Suns to play in the tournament, was key down the stretch with six of his eight points in the fourth quarter. An Albury layup put the Suns ahead 49-47 and Valentino Moss’ three-pointer on the next possession gave them the biggest lead of the 2nd half. After a Cavs score, Albury made a late floater at the shot clock buzzer for a 53-49 lead with just under a minute left to play to seal the win.
