Melia closes doors for two years laying hundreds out of work By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net THE Melia Nassau Beach resort will stop operating for 24 months as it undergoes renovations, an action that could make more than 300 people redundant. Yesterday, Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar called the announcement a “severe punch in the gut”. Daniel Lozano, the resort’s general manager, said in a staff letter that operations at the resort will cease on March 1. “It is our hope that with extending closure of the resort and undertaking a renovation, we are setting the stage for the successful opening of a brand-new resort, one that will

promote the much-needed economic relief and stability upon which all of us depend,” he said. “The toughest part of our decision relates to those whom this decision impacts, which is you, our Melia family. “We are wholeheartedly thankful to you who have been with us on this long and difficult journey, and we commend your strength, contributions and perseverance through the past 12 months. We look forward to the day when we unveil a new resort to distinguished and valued guests from all over the world, furthering the long-term economic health and prosperity of The Bahamas.” SEE PAGE THREE

He confirmed Fusion Superplex had immediately begun the process of recalling furloughed staff upon receiving the letter, dated February 12, 2021, and signed by the Prime Minister, yesterday. Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis announced earlier this month the government is currently completing legislation to legalise medicinal marijuana. Speaking to The Tribune yesterday, head of the Ethiopia Africa Black International Congress (EABIC) Bahamas branch, Priest Rithmond McKinney said while the community supports the move, they want assurance Rastafarians will be a part of the marijuana industry when made legal, as they have suffered the most because of the criminalisation of the popular herb. SANDS - I’M SURE I’LL BE SELECTED By TANYA SMITHCARTWRIGHT tsmith-cartwright@ tribunemedia.net

FORMER Health Minister Dr Duane Sands has expressed confidence that he will be ratified as the Free National Movement’s Elizabeth candidate for the next general election. Since his resignation as Minister of Health last year, Dr Sands has been quite vocal against some

DR DUANE SANDS of government’s decisions, in particular the extension of the state of emergency, certain matters pertaining to the Ministry of Health

and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. With election fever in the air, some observers have speculated as to whether Dr Sands will be among the incumbents who will not secure a nomination from the governing party.
