National record for Mullings LAFAYETTE, Indiana – Heptathlon national record holder Ken Mullings improved the record by 387 points to 5426 points at the Fred Wilts Purdue Indoor Invitational over the weekend.

The previous record was 5059 points that he set in 2018 at the same meet.

“There was never a doubt for me that I would break the record,” Mullings said in Lafayette. “I knew my off-season training was paying off and this was the proof of it for me.”

Mullings won every event in the seven-event competition except the 60m dash and the pole vault. On day one, Mullings won the long jump with a best jump of 6.92m (22ft, 8.5in), the shot put with a best performance

of 12.47m (40ft, 11in) and high jump after clearing 2.10m (6ft 10.75in). After day one, Mullings said he felt as if he was right on track to best his record.

“I could have picked up more points in the shot put but I felt right on track after day one,” he said.

He placed second in the 60m dash in 7.13 seconds on day one.

On day two, he placed second in the pole vault competition clearing 4.25m (13ft 11.25in) but won the other two events. In the 60m hurdles he beat all of the competitors by more than half a second and was the only one to go under nine seconds with a 8.35 second performance.

DEANDRE Ayton returned to the court after missing with an ankle sprain while Buddy Hield produced his fourth 30-point game the season and set a new career high for three pointers made in a single campaign.

Ayton finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his 28th double double of the season but the Suns fell 118-112 to the Atlanta Hawks Saturday at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

It was the 10th consecutive loss for the Suns who fell to 11-43 on the season.

There were 11 ties and 10 lead changes in a tight first half with Atlanta leading 58-57 at the break. The Hawks’ biggest lead in the first two quarters was 10, the Suns’ five.

Ayton also leads all rookies with 10.6 rebounds per game and a .594 field goal percentage. He also ranks second in scoring at 16.4 points per game in 48 appearances this season.

His field goal percentage is the third-highest in NBA history by a rookie qualified for the league leaderboard and the highest by a rookie who is averaging a double-double.

Many pundits expect Ayton to extend his range to the perimeter after he was seen working with Suns’ head of player development Cody Toppert on his three point during shotaround.

Ayton has taken just two three point attempts thus far this season and shot 34 percent in 35 attempts during his lone season at the University of Arizona.

“It’s a process, nothing happens overnight. At some point, he’s gonna start shooting. That’s modern basketball, three-point line, the power of the threepoint line — we all know how important it is for modern basketball,” Suns head coach Igor Kokoskov said following shootaround.

“But the thing is, for him to start shooting he can’t just say ‘OK, today is Monday, today is Tuesday — I’m going to start shooting’. It’s a process, it requires time.

But right now I want him

to dominate the game in different areas but if he’s open for a three-point look I have nothing against it.

A big guy with such a soft touch — sooner or later he’s gonna be there.”

Hield, on the other hand, is known for his three point shooting prowess and added another milestone in his breakout season.

He finished with 34 points and shot 7-13 from three in the Sacramento Kings’ 115-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers Saturday night at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.

Hield now has 180 threepoint makes this season in just 52 games to surpass his previous high of 176 set in the 2017-18 campaign. He is currently tied for fourth in the NBA in three point percentage.

Hield is averaging a team-leading 20.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Hield is also shooting efficiently at 48 percent from the field and 46 percent from three.

“It’s getting easy ones to get myself going and it’s keeping the defense honest,” Hield said. “Just trying to make them play on certain areas on the court.”

Sacramento improved to 27-25 on the season and has already matched their win total from last season before the All-Star break.

They are also currently 1.5 games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

“If we were in the East we’d probably be the fifth or sixth seed,” Hield said.

“Everybody’s still doubting us but we believe in ourselves and we’re going to keep believing.”

Ayton and Hield will participate at the league’s All-Star Weekend festivities, February 15-17 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Ayton was selected as a member of the World Team for the 2019 Mountain Dew Ice Rising Stars, hosted Friday, February 15, while Hield was named as a participant in the 3-Point Contest, hosted on State Farm All-Star Saturday night. Hield previously participated in the Risings Stars Challenge in both 2017 and 2018.

Final face-off today in climax to GSSSA series

After a hard-fought season and the remaining semi-final completed over the weekend, the GSSSA moves into the championship series in all four divisions today at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.

The Senior Boys division will feature the Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins versus the CI Gibson Rattlers while the Senior Girls will feature the Rattlers against the CV Bethel Stingrays.

The DW Davis Royals and CH Reeves and TA Thompson Scorpions will face off in the Junior Girls Division.

The first series of games will tipoff at 4pm.

Both junior division champions (the Royals and Lions) look to repeat in their respective divisions, while we’re assured of new title holders in both senior divisions.

The 2018 champions were HO Nash in the junior girls, DW Davis in the junior boys, Doris Johnson in the senior girls and Anatol Rodgers in the senior boys.

The Mystic Marlins Senior Boys were the final team to clinch their spot in the final with a 54-42 win over the Timberwolves Saturday night.

Malachi McCoy led the way with 15 points while Janus Shephered scored 14.

The Mystic Marlins went through the regular season undefeated en route to winning the pennant, but were upset in game one of the semifinals. They recovered to take a 54-50 win in game two and force a third and deciding game in the series.

The Rattlers Senior Boys concluded a two-game sweep over the defending

champion CC Cobras with a 67-51 win Friday night.

The 2019 series will be a renewed chapter in the rivalry between the Mystic Marlins and the Rattlers.

The programmes will meet to decide the Senior Boys title for the fourth time in the last six years.

In the Senior Girls division, the Rattlers come in as the pennant winners, undefeated thus far on the season at 9-0 while the second seeded Stingrays outlasted the T’Wolves in their semi-final series.

The Royals, perennial contenders for the Junior Boys title look to regain a familiar spot atop the league and claim their fourth consecutive title.

They remain undefeated on the season at 9-0. The second ranked Raptors lone loss of this season, came at the hands of the Royals.

The Junior Girls championship will also be a rematch of the 2018 series between the Lions and the Scorpions. That series was decided in three games and the Lions eventually claimed their third consecutive title.

Stakeholders promise this year’s championship series will provide a unique experience for the studentathletes participating and fanbases cheering them on.

Evon Wisdom, of the Ministry of Education’s Sports Unit, said the event has grown exponentially with the continued support of its most loyal sponsor and new additions.

“Our championships started at humble beginnings in local school gymnasiums.

We then moved on to the KGLI Gymnasium, which in those days we could only half fill and then we got an opportunity from

Cable Bahamas. “Since that intervention, this event has grown to where we host all our playoffs in the national gymnasium to capacity crowds,” he said.

“Where we envision this going is to have more and more corporate entities like our partners here to assist us in making this event an even greater success. We only see this getting better.

One of the things we are trying to highlight is our women in sport. Our young men are highlighted but we still want to bring some equity to this.

“A lot of these young people receiving this opportunity are of humble means and so for us to showcase their skills means a lot to them and they perform to an even higher level.”

Each of the four divisions will be contested each day with the senior boys’ matchup televised live at 8pm on Our TV. “It is our pleasure to be the presented broadcast partner in these events. We like to think of ourselves as providing a platform through exactly what it is that we do for these games to be seen nationwide and empowering young people.

Charles Bain and the Robert Morris Colonials were also involved in a double overtime thriller, but came up short on the losing end. Bain scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 97-94 loss to the Farleigh Dickinson Knights.

In dropping their second consecutive three-point decision, the Colonials slip to 12-11 overall and 7-3 in the Northeast Conference.

“We have the ball up with 37 seconds left in regulation and we turn the ball over twice,” Colonial head coach Andrew Toole said. “We spend so much time working on the pressure, but we had untimely turnovers. We work our way back in the second half, and we have the ball with 35 seconds and we just can’t get the ball over half court. In key moments, we didn’t do the things in order to win.”

He won the event in 2:58.55 and was excited to have not only improved the record but also to have gone under the three-minute mark.

“This still shows me that if I continue to train as

hard as I did off season I should be able to progress way better than last year by the time World Championships and the rest of the summer meets come around,” he said.

DAVIS CLINCHES MAVERICKS WIN

Radshad Davis and the Texas-Arlington Mavericks moved into second place in the Sun Belt Conference with an 84-77 double overtime win over the Texas State.

Davis finished with 12 points and four rebounds off the bench. He made the game-clinching three pointer from the baseline in the second overtime period put his team up 80-74 with 55 seconds left to play.

“I’ve said it all year, and our guys have heard it all season, that we want to be playing our best basketball in February and March.

Well, this is a pretty good start to that stretch we’ve emphasised for so long.

Mavericks head coach Chris Ogden said: “We showed so much resiliency in a tough environment, and I’m so proud of these guys.”

IT wasn’t the kind of support they expected, but newly formed ANOO and The Sports Fellowship Institute made good on its promise to assist the Bahamas Diabetic Association.

Last week, ANOO’s founder Clinton Minnis made a cheque presentation to Eugene Thurston, the president of the BDA. It was from the proceeds of the inaugural “Walk It Off” event on Saturday, January 5, at RM Bailey Park.

The event kicked off the year and highlighted the need for corporate Bahamas to lend their support to various community organisations.

In accepting the donation, Thurston said the funds will go a long way in assisting the BDA with their varied programmes

that they have to offer.

“It was really a honor for the association to come forward and to do this walk for us. It was a certainly a blessing in a time when we need more financial donations,” he said. “From what I’ve seen at the walk, this event will only get better and better in years to come and we look forward to working closely with the association in years to come.”

Minnis said ANOO and the SFI wish that they could do even more to assist.

“ANOO wants to be true to form,” Minnis said.”We are legitimate and we will follow through in whatever we commit ourselves to doing. The walk was facilitated by the Sports Fellowship Institute, a branch of our organisation.

“We have gotten the endorsement of Commonwealth Drugs Supplies.

They want to be a permanent sponsor and we want

to thank them for assisting us as we try to become a permanent partner and sponsors of the Bahamas Diabetic Association.”

Minnis thanked Thurston and the BDA for having the confidence in his organisation and Commonwealth Drugs for coming on board as a major sponsor.

While the initial event was just a way for ANOO and SFI to get their feet wet, Minnis said they plan to make the event an annual one and the next onewill be much bigger and better. It’s already scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2020.

In the meantime, Thurston said with more than 25,000 persons in The Bahamas affected by diabetics, any assistance they can receive will benefit them. He said persons wishing to make their contribution can contact 242-356-2349 or email bda2020@hotmail.com.

EVANS LEADS THE WAY AS LONGHORNS OUTPACE THE WOLFPACK

JOANNA Evans continues to be a standout performer for her top-ranked Texas Longhorns to lead the list of impressive performances for Bahamians in NCAA Division I swimming.

The Olympian and Longhorns senior AllAmerican, Evans won three events when her No 1 Longhorns defeated the No 6 North Carolina State Wolfpack and the Arizona Wolfpack.

Evans took first place in the 1000 yard Free (9:45.19 secs), 200 yard Free (1:46.31 secs), and 500 yard Free

(4:47.18 secs).

Evans also took three individual events in the double dual against Florida and Indiana to start the season.

Texas has now won 21-straight dual meets since the 2016-17 season with 18 of those coming against Top 25 foes.

Back in November,

Evans was named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week after her four first-places finishes in meets against the nation’s No 11 team - Texas A and M Aggies and the No 5 team, the California Golden Bears.

In the Atlantic Coast Conference, freshman sensation Izaak Bastian secured another win for the

Florida State Seminoles.

The No 22-ranked FSU closed out their season with a 191-100 win over the Florida Atlantic University Owls.

Individually, Bastian finished third in the 50 yard free and was a member of the first place 200 yard Medley team.

Lilly Higgs and the North

Carolina Tar Heels Women suffered a 134.50-165.50 loss to the No 21 Duke.

The Tar Heels swept three events, including the 100 yard Breast, 200 yard Breast and 1000 yard Free.

Higgs won the 200-yard breast in 2:16.58 secs and finished second in the 100 yard breast in 1:02.57 secs.

DEFENCES dominated what was supposed to be a super shootout, until Tom Brady led one classic drive to win the New England Patriots their record-tying sixth Super Bowl.

Brady threw two perfect passes to Rob Gronkowski to set up rookie Sony Michel’s two-yard score — the only touchdown in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever. That put New England up 10-3. A late field goal clinched the game 13-3.

In a season when all sorts of offensive records were set, this Super Bowl rewrote the defensive record book.

No Super Bowl had gone into the fourth quarter without a touchdown. This one did, tied 3-3 — even though these teams combined to average over 60 points a game.

When the Patriots needed a score, Brady, the oldest winning quarterback in a Super Bowl at 41, completed four straight passes, including a pair covering 47 yards to Gronkowski.

The second, on which the star tight end beat two defenders, ended at the Los Angeles 2, the only time either team was inside the 20-yard line. Michel ran off left tackle for his sixth postseason touchdown.

With 4:17 left, All-Pro Stephon Gilmore picked off an ill-advised pass by Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who seemed overwhelmed by the big stage all night, at the New England 2.

Stephen Gostkowski made a 41-yard field goal with 1:12 remaining, completing a 72-yard march that took more than three minutes off the clock and included 26-yard runs by Michel and Rex Burkhead.

It was a workmanlike conclusion for the Patriots (14-5), whose losses all came away from New England. They beat the top two offenses in the Chiefs and Rams (15-4) in the postseason, and tied Pittsburgh for most Super Bowl titles.

The Patriots were terrific all game on defence, allowing the fewest points in a Super Bowl (tied with Dallas in 1972 against Miami).

The Rams, who reached the NFL championship game with the aid of a major officiating error in the conference title victory at New Orleans, never really threatened to reach the end zone.

At 66, Bill Belichick became the oldest winning Super Bowl coach. The Patriots beat the Rams, then representing St. Louis, to begin their dynastic run in the 2002 game. They also have beaten Carolina and Philadelphia (2004 and ’05, the last repeater); the Seahawks in

The Rams’ Johnny Hekker had a 65-yard punt in the third quarter, the longest in a Super Bowl. It was his eighth punt of the game — with 1 1-2 periods remaining — the most for LA in McVay’s two seasons in charge.

Greg Zuerlein tied it with 2:11 left in the third quarter on the first drive on which Los Angeles gained more than one first down. His 53-yarder was the secondlongest field goal in a Super Bowl.

They have lost three times, including to Philadelphia a year ago. New England is the first team since the 1972 Dolphins to win a Super Bowl the year after losing one.

How the Patriots accomplished it was atypical.

Brady, who has won four Super Bowl MVP trophies, wasn’t particularly sharp — except when throwing to Julian Edelman, the game’s MVP. Edelman, who was injured and didn’t play the 2017 season, was the steadiest offensive player on the field, finishing with ten catches for 141 yards.

AT a special presentation at the Coral Harbour Base, team members who participated in marathon races during the weekend of January 20–21 were commended by Commodore Tellis Bethel, Commander of the Defence Force, for their performances.

The officers and marines participated in both the Susan G Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure (January 20) and Sunshine Insurance’s Marathon Bahamas Race (January 21).

Marine Seaman Troy Seymour was given special recognition, as he was the first overall Bahamian to complete the half marathon race (13.1 miles).

Race for the Cure were: Lieutenant Commander Carlon Bethel, Sub Lieutenant Delroy Dennis, Leading Woman Marine Denise Oliver, Able Seaman Ryan Ferguson, Able Seaman Dorrian McKenzie, Woman Marine Adonya Colebrooke, Marine Seaman Troy Seymour and Marine Seaman Nakeito Thurston. The three-mile race began at Montague Foreshores and culminated on Paradise Island in the parking lot of the Atlantis Resort.

At the Bahamas Marathon 10th Annual Road Race, the military men and women participated in the half-marathon segment as well as the 4-man

relay. In the half-marathon (13.1 miles), Marine Seaman Troy Seymour and Marine Mechanic Christopher Cash finished 1st and 2nd overall in the 20-24 age category, Marine Seaman Darius Johnson placed 4th and Marine Seaman Blair Farrington placed 11th in the 25-30 category, Sub Lieutenant Delroy Dennis came 4th in the 30-35 category; and Lieutenant Commander Derrick Ferguson and Lieutenant Edward Fritz also participated in the Half Marathon Race.

The 13.1 mile half marathon began at Junkanoo Beach to Cable Beach, West Bay Street and heading back to Arawak Cay.
