‘Simple mistake’ at heart of trial
Crown claims key Smith witness got vital date wrong By RICARDO WELLS Tribune Staff Reporter rwells@tribunemedia.net THE Crown’s lead attorney in the extortion and bribery trial of Frank Smith has suggested that star witness Barbara Hanna’s indication that she met with the accused in March of 2016 after she was awarded a cleaning contract was nothing more than a “simple mistake”, stunning the court yesterday with the admission that the prosecution’s case was built around this error in the record.
According to submissions yesterday by Crown attorney Edward Jenkins, QC, despite her evidence that she first met Smith in March 2016 at the behest of former Deputy Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis, months after her Magic Touch cleaning company was awarded a $500,000 annual contract from the Public Hospitals Authority, Hanna did in fact meet with Smith in March of 2015. MINISTRY of Education officials were to meet with investigators of the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Anti-Corruption Unit yesterday to discuss the parameters of a probe into suspected collusion among employees who are believed to have defrauded the government of almost $450,000. A high-ranking source in the Minnis administration confirmed the planned briefing yesterday, adding the government is taking this matter very seriously. However, no one has been fired as officials are said to be waiting on the outcome of the police investigation, which could take several weeks, the source said.

DELINQUENT Bahamian borrowers have been warned to get their finances in order after the Central Bank selected the preferred bidder for this nation’s firstever Credit Bureau. Gowon Bowe, the Clearing Banks Association’s chairman, said that its creation “is going to be a tremendous shock” to Bahamians with poor credit histories who will face higher borrowing costs and find it harder to obtain loans.
