Mavin Saunders on the grid for 2019 NFL Draft By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net avin Saunders’ preparation for the 2019 NFL Draft has taken him across the United States to bowl games and showcases as he looks to increase his stock at the professional level. Saunders recently participated in the College Gridiron Showcase Symposium and the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl. Following his sessions at both events, he interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills. The 6’6”, 258-pound tight end said he looks to make the most of each opportunity to showcase his skillset for NFL franchises. “Both bowls target seniors with potential who may be under the radar so I was invited to both,” Saunders said. “The draft process been a great learning experience has the opportunity to connect with many different businesses etc. After my performances in the practices in the bowls I had some new opportunities and I look forward to even more.” The 2019 NFL Draft takes place April 25-27 in Nashville, Tennessee, featuring 254 total selections in seven rounds. Currently training in Houston, Texas, Saunders is confident he will have his NFL opportunity. “Those events were both a success. I’ve heard I’ll probably get picked up in a later round or signed as a free agent but all it takes is one team. A lot of teams are interested so I’ll get in, I just have to work to stay in.” Thirty members of the 2018 CGS class are now in the NFL, the most of any class. More than 110

BUDDY Hield is having a breakout season as one of the NBA’s most improved players and the local media in Sacramento is galvanising support for his bid to the 2019 Three-Point Contest on All-Star Weekend. Hield is tied for third in the league with Paul George and Kemba Walker in three-point makes per game at 3.3 per contest and is shooting 44.4 per cent from three-point range, both career highs. His three-point percentage ranks ninth among qualified players, but fourth among players who shoot five or more attempts per contest. He also ranks fourth in the league in total three-point makes (143),
behind James Harden (194) and Steph Curry (167). In Monday night’s 115107 win over the Portland Trailblazers at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California, Hield shot 7-10 from the field en route to a team high 19 points. He was 2-4 from three-point range with seven rebounds. In 44 games this season, Hield is averaging a team leading 20.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Hield is also shooting efficiently at 47.8 per cent from the field. Hield had an active 2018 All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles where he participated in a number of events but was not selected for the 3-Point Contest. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Rookie Deandre Ayton finished with 14 points and eight rebounds for the Phoenix Suns but it wasn’t enough as Bojan Bogdanovic scored 20 points and the Indiana Pacers cruised to a 131-97 victory last night. Ayton also had a block and steal in 29 minutes on the hardwood. However, Myles Turner returned for the first time in four games to finish with 18 points and six rebounds. Turner was nursing a sore right shoulder over the last week. Indiana got off to a hot start thanks to Bogdanovic, who scored the Pacers’ first 10 points. The Pacers doubled the Suns’ total in the first quarter, leading 38-19 at the end of the period. Cory Joseph scored eight of his 10 points in the first quarter, adding to Bogdanovic’s hot start. Thaddeus Young scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half and finished the game with seven rebounds. Joseph was one of three Pacers who scored in double figures off the bench.

Tropical Bowl participants have gone on to the NFL, while every NFL team was in attendance at this year’s event. During his lone season at KU, he played in nine games, and caught four receptions for 32 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown. Saunders spent his first four seasons at Florida State before graduating and transferring to Kansas. Saunders caught the first touchdown reception of his NCAA career in the Jayhawks’ 38-22 loss to then No.8/9 West Virginia in October.

DIVISION II Breezes High Flyers - 94 Caro Contractors Titans - 81 Devonte Gibson led the defending champions with a dominant 25-point, 19-rebound performance to pace four High Flyers in double figures. Dave Davis also posted a double double with 19 points and 16 rebounds, Brendon Stubbs scored 18 and Dario Saunders finished with 13 points. Shanton Pratt stuffed the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds and a game high eight assists. Savant Laing led the Titans with a game high 26 points, Delmar Hamilton scored 15 and Dewhone Murray scored 10 with 11 rebounds. The High Flyers made just two shots from beyond the arc but dominated the
