Whooping Cough Cases Prompt Reminder from Health Unit

by Preston Pouteaux The other day we pulled down our seed box. It’s just a cardboard box we keep in a dark cupboard, but it’s a treasure trove.

Store bought seeds for vegetables and flowers, wild seeds in old envelopes and packages of rare seeds that came in the mail – our box has it all. We’ve been to seed exchanges and we can spend hours with gardening friends talking about what seeds to plant this year. Seed catalogues and newsletters keep our imaginations going even on the coldest winter days.

Although our garden is covered in snow right now, we know that spring is coming. We expect our dormant shrubs to wake up and we know that our thousand tulip and crocus bulbs are preparing to push through green shoots in a few months. My bees have been huddling together in their hives and on warm days they fly out looking for signs of spring. We wait, and we prepare.

It has been said that if you’re thinking about next year, plant a seed. If you’re thinking about the next decade, plant trees. But if you’re thinking about the value of your lifetime, teach others to garden. As those who build communities, our interest is in far more than the next season or decade, our hope is that we will build a lasting culture of amazing neighbourhoods that create hope and life.

One of my favourite stories is “The Man Who Planted Trees”

by Jean Giono. It is a fictional tale about Elzéard Bouffier who spent his life planting acorns and turned a desolate part of France into a lush sprawling forest. His work was so slow and subtle that people thought it was a miracle – how amazing that a forest would grow from nothing! His work survived wars and schemes to harvest lumber. The man who planted trees simply stuck to his work and in the end a region that was bare and lifeless became a home to new rivers, new villages, and new happy, healthy families. It is a metaphor for the kind of work that is needed if we’re to create life in our own world.

Growth and life require preparation. Creating gardens, as with community, does not happen in a short moment of enthusiasm. It takes thoughtfulness. Health in a community emerges from a passion for goodness, beauty, and care, all of which take time and attentiveness. I’ve observed that anything that has a hope of lasting begins somewhere deep in our soul. Preparing our community for a bright future often means preparing our heart for the journey.

A Greek proverb says, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

May we spend our days nurturing hope, goodness, and beauty in our homes, our neighbourhoods, and our city.

(Northumberland) The local health unit is urging parents to make sure their children’s immunizations are up-todate after being notified of one laboratory confirmed case and three linked cases of pertussis in a Northumberland County family.

Pertussis, also called whooping cough, is a serious bacterial infection of the respiratory system. It is easily spread through droplets in the air from the coughing or sneezing of an infected person. While anyone can get whooping cough, it is most dangerous for children under the age of one year, and pregnant women.

Whooping cough typically starts with a runny nose and an irritating cough that becomes more frequent or severe, often followed by vomiting, says Marianne Rock, Manager of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “Once

a person is infected, it can take up to 20 days for them to develop symptoms,” she says.

The Health Unit was notified this week that one case of whooping cough had been confirmed with laboratory testing, and that three other family members in the same household are ill with symptoms. Those ill were either not vaccinated or partially vaccinated against the virus.

Whooping cough is preventable through immunization, and Rock says the reminder to parents about their children’s vaccinations comes at a time when the Health Unit has been busy sending notices to area students whose vaccination records are not up-to-date. These notices tell families that if vaccination records are not updated, or a valid exemption for medical, conscience or religious reasons is not submitted to the Health Unit, students will be suspended from school starting in April.

“While it is not the Health Unit’s intent to suspend students, there is a requirement for all students to be vaccinated,” Rock notes.

“Vaccines are free, safe and effective, and help protect young people against very serious diseases.”

The current cases of whooping cough are recovering at home, Rock says, and the Health Unit has been following up with anyone who may have been in contact with the family. At this time, there does not appear to be any additional cases, but she encourages anyone who develops symptoms to contact their health care provider or emergency room to arrange for testing.

By Rob Ir ving, Jack Begg The “Irish Green” was in fine display at the Norwood Lions Club Shamrock Breakfast on St Patrick’s Day at the Norwood Town Hall. A delicious meal of pancakes and sausages, home baked muffins and a dish of fruit served with coffee, tea or juice. Thanks to Lindsay and Laurie Burtt from Linlor Farms for the sweet and savoury Maple Syrup to top off the servings of pancakes. This syrup was as fresh as could be as it was Linlor Farms first batch of the season. It has only been in the bottle one day!! Thanks to our MPP David Piccini who dropped in for a couple of hours and lent his hand to pancake flipping and table cleaning.

The Norwood Lions would like to thank the 280 people who attended the breakfast. Your support of our fundraising efforts is greatly appreciated.

This month the Norwood Lions Club presented the Municipal Council of Asphodel Norwood a cheque for $37,099 which was the Club’s share of the re-

cent renovations to the historic Norwood Town Hall. We are also committed to supporting the campaign to make a Hospice in Norwood a reality. Over the next few years the Norwood Lions Club has pledged $50,000 to this project. At the same meeting our newest Lion, Richard Fasullo was inducted into the Norwood Lions Club joining the 50 members in the local club as well as the 1.5 million members of Lions Club International worldwide.

The Norwood Lions Club have a couple of projects upcoming to support our environment.

If you are interested in conserving water the Norwood Lions Club will be selling rain barrels which you can use to collect runoff from your roof to water your lawns and gardens. On the same day the Lions Club will be conducting

an electronic waste and textile recycling. If you are in need of the materials being picked up, please call either of the numbers above.

When approaching a design project or renovation, a lot of people leave the fine details to the end but start thinking about the finishing details in the beginning stages of your reno. The fine details in your project are called “interior finishings.”

Interior finishings and trims gives your room character.

Trims can be used practically anywhere: walls, ceilings, stairways, and interior doors … anything to finish off your space.

Ceilings are the most neglected piece of real estate a room has.

It can be considered your fifth surface for decorating. Bring attention to this part of the room by adding a medallion, beams to create a coffered style ceiling, and crown moulding.

Proportions are important for crown moldings: if your ceiling height is 8’ use a 3” crown; 9’ use 3 ¾” and 10’ use 4”.

When it comes to wall surfaces, you can add interest with wainscoting and a chair rail 36 to 42 inches from the floor around the perimeter of the room. It’s usually made of wood in either a panel or beadboard covering the bottom portion of the wall. A smaller addition would be replacing baseboards with a different profile, possibly with plinth blocks which are small wood blocks used at the base of the trim to connect the baseboard with the door trim. To pull everything together I suggest keeping baseboards consistent throughout the home.

It’s important to select the

right materials when dealing with high moisture areas of your home. MDF (manufactured fibre-board) can swell if it hasn’t been prepped properly so consider where you’ll be using this kind of product, especially in damp areas or where seasonal flooding could occur.

Adding a column to your entry way or keystones above the window can be a classy decorative element. Posts and columns can be structural or non-structural and provide a division of space without closing off the whole room. It was a popular architectural element in century homes and has made a come-back in new builds.

Interior doors are another way to change the look of a home.

If you have a dark hallway area consider French doors which allow light to filter in. Some homeowners use novelty style doors for bathrooms and pantry area with patterns or words etched into the glass.

Stairways are another area where you can add personality. Consider painting the spindles, staining the newel post or adding a decorative panel to the lower part of the wall running up the stairs.

Another important reason for selecting the finishings first is so you plan for necessities like lighting receptacles and switches, speakers and air exchanges. You don’t want to have to cut around any of these elements as it will take away from the overall beauty of the room.

Money “Money won’t create success, the freedom to make it will.” Nelson Mandela Money is a strange thing. You need it to do your work and to have a safe and successful life. You need the free-will to go out in the world and work to make money.

The dangerous part of money is when desire to have more and more, and it makes you greedy. Then you seek it out for the wrong reasons. For example, an insurance company wants to make huge profits where the money serves the pockets of the shareholders, not everyday people. We must make enough money to survive and to share, but not just for its own sake. Little by little, we must be steady in our work and get paid for what we do.

If money is used wisely, for example on good materials for painting, for a handmade instrument for playing music, or for helping others, then it is well spent. If you think about it, money is just paper or a balance in a bank account. It is your wise use and good intentions with money, that are most important.

Goacher Girls Book/less Club

Spring into Fitness

Through the shrouds of darkness, shadows of huddled figures shuffle along the quiet country road and make their way down the dimly-lit path.

An ancient cloister of old-order nuns come to mind?

As the door swings open the sound of irrepressible laughter and merriment could never be mistaken for the silence vowed in a convent. It is the women of Goacher Road making their way up the icy driveway of the Smith sisters for their February “Goacher Girls Book/less Club”.

In 2004, one of the many env i r o n m e n t a l l y- c o n s c i o u s Goacher residents, Dave Burnham, decided to organize a community attack on litter and staged the first annual “Goacher Garbage Gala”. The day involved clearing the litter from the roadsides in the area and concluded with a community potluck supper. The event was such a resounding success, and the women had such a wonderful time getting to know each other better, that it was decided to make their get-togethers a regular occur-

rence. Little did we know, the magnitude to which this project would evolve.

Having been part of a very unique book club in Peterborough started by a colleague some years before, I decided to try out this idea with my new friends on Goacher Road. Unlike most book clubs where it is communally decided upon which book is read each month and participants dissect and analyze their literary choice, this book club (or rather book/ less club) puts no pressure on what book is read. In fact, each participant chooses her own books to read over the course of the month and shares her reviews, thoughts and books.

Although we do promote reading and good literature, there is certainly no pressure to pick up a book, and if it has been a busy month, members are encouraged to share an article, a movie review, an interesting fact about community history or just catch us up on what is going on in their lives.

With it’s inaugural meeting on November 16th of 2006, The Goacher Girls’ Book/less Book

Club is now well into its thirteenth year. The premier gathered 8 of our current 20 members who ranged in age from 28 to 91. Our most senior member was the well-versed story teller, the now late Vera Goeree, who regularly treated us to fascinating tales of growing up in Denmark, life as a young mother during wartimes and her immigration to Canada.

I once thought that we might enjoy this group for a year or two and was prepared to host each month myself, but that has never been the case. Our Goacher sisters take turns hosting each month with treats and beverages, indulging ourselves in a Christmas meal at a local restaurant in December and in the month of August we take a holiday.

Yes, this is known as a book club but what it has really become is a wonderfully strong network of women who support each other in good times, not so good times and truly enjoy each others company each month in between.

Ahhh, it’s spring! It’s so tempting to go from a standing start to full speed ahead. But before you get carried away, remember to ease your body into any activity with some exercise and stretching. Gardening, cleaning, or golfing are strenuous forms of exercise! Inside, you may want to dust walls and ceilings; vacuum the house, including drapes and blinds; clean windows; polish furniture; and perhaps even paint and redecorate. Outside, you’ll rake up debris and prepare the garden. These are perfect scenarios for injury—you need to take care.

Think of yourself as an athlete using a good cross-training approach. Vary activities to use different muscle groups for short periods of time. When vacuuming, do one room at a time and then move on to a task you can do standing up or sitting. You will you reduce stress on joints and muscles, find you accomplish more, and are less tired. Whatever you do, prepare by warming up your muscles and moving your large joints.

A good warm-up program of stretching and walking will loosen up muscles and allow you to do any activity with greater ease and less chance of injury. Many studies have shown that an active lifestyle with moderate exercise is key to overall good health.

After a half hour of raking or digging, stand up and do something else, like pruning.

Transfer large sacks of peat moss etc. from your vehicle to a waiting wheelbarrow or cart and disperse from there.

General Tips • Begin with a light warm-up, walking for five minutes to

raise heart rate and warm up muscles.

• Stretch all of the major muscles—back, neck, hands, and fingers. After activities that require bending over, bend backwards to reduce back strain.

• Be aware of body mechanics to minimize strain. Tighten up your stomach muscles to protect your back. Use your legs to help move heavy objects— bend the knees, keep the back straight, and hold the object close. Avoid twisting. Use the golfers’ lift.

• Use ergonomic tools. Use long-handled tools, a potting bench, or a stool to minimize bending. Sit on the ground to trowel; wear gloves to prevent cuts, etc. Wrap tape around the grips of tools to make them thicker and easier to squeeze.

• Pace yourself. Interrupt your work every 20–30 minutes. Do some gentle stretching.

• Change activities frequently.

If you do hurt yourself, stop.

Figure out what caused the pain and change your technique.

Canada’s Food Guide 2019: NP Sam’s Report Card

By Sam Dalby The first Canada Food Guide (CFG) was produced by the government in 1942. In those days “Canada’s Food Rules” were based on the recommendations of “scientists, experts and welfare workers” looking to reduce nutritional deficiencies during WWII when food rationing was introduced.

Since 1942 there have been 8 revisions of the food guide.

In 2019 we have completely different nutrition problems with 64% of Canadian adults overweight or obese. 85% of what we see in primary care is management of “lifestyle disease” and this includes heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, mental health conditions, and cancers – all of which are related to what we eat and how

sweeteners, and unhealthy fats have no nutritional value and do not contribute to health. Well done Health Canada! I have two criticisms.

They recommend (1) eating low-fat dairy products and, (2) eating whole grains but show spaghetti and bread in the visual guide. Low-fat foods are processed and saturated fat, when eaten in the context of a whole foods diet, has not been shown to cause disease. Processed carbohydrates like bread and pasta are low on nutrients and fibre unlike their whole equivalents such as quinoa and ground flax. Content Score: 7/10 The context, or food environment, correctly speaks to cooking your own food at home, eating with others, en-

Here is my review of CFG 2019.

The visual plate guide divided into food types is outstanding. No counting calories, servings, grams or ounces is required. This is a great because the evidence shows that measuring food is not accurate, sustainable or productive. Usability/Readability Score: 10/10 The big objective of CFG 2019 is “to promote healthy eating and overall nutritional well-being, and support improvements to the Canadian food environment”. It’s worth noting that the food guide does not aim to assist with weight loss and that is appropriate. Those who want to lose weight can modify the food guide recommendations to suit their needs. Clear Goals Score: 10/10 I’m ecstatic that CFG 2019 is all about whole foods with a heavy emphasis on vegetables and fruit and water as the drink of choice. This absolutely reflects research from the last decade or more.

Context Score: 10/10 It’s pleasing to see that the references used for CFG 2019 include research superstars like the World Health Organization and the World Cancer Research Fund. I’m disappointed that a lot of the references for fat intake and cholesterol were published almost a decade ago and may not include more recent evidence on these topics. Research/Evidence Score: 8/10 Health Canada excluded evidence from lobby groups and industries or organizations that profit from food production or sales in CFG 2019.

Hallelujah. They prioritized Canadian public health and included evidence from health organizations with expert panels who produce reviews and research with full accountability and transparency. Transparency Score: 10/10 A good question of any nutrition guideline is whether

or not it is accessible to everyone. A common concern is that eating whole foods will be more expensive. Pure myth. Packaged and fast food is checkout-cheap but usually offers single servings that feed you once. Emphasizing plant-based foods and cooking at home is cheaper in the long-run and accessible to most Canadians. That said, HC talk extensively in the long guide about the determinants of health and food security (see Political Advocacy below) and acknowledge that factors like age, income level, and rurality will affect nutrition choices. Accessibility Score: 10/10 HC supports traditional and community eating and acknowledges individual needs and variations. They provide online tips for dietary change, menus, and recipes (see https://food-guide. canada.ca/en/). To provide a culturally appropriate CFG in 2019 HC consulted communities, regional governments and indigenous organizations and reviewed food guides from other nations and guidelines on First Nations health.

Cultural Appropriateness Score: 9/10 I was pleased to see environmental impact issues introduced. They have correctly emphasized that food choices have an impact on our environment and that a diet emphasizing plant-based food is better for people and the planet. They also raise the issue of environmental contaminants in northern and remote communities and advocate that people must be able to access safe food in order to have food security. CFG 2019 also discusses the environmental impact of food waste and estimates that $31 billion worth of food is wasted every year in Canada – 50% of that is at the household level. This is why the new guide talks about meal planning and eating at home. Environmental Responsibility Score: 10/10 It feels like Health Canada has written CFG 2019 to arm health care professionals and political representatives with the tools to change health policy in Canada. I think that’s both progressive and well timed. Population health = political advocacy. Political Advocacy Score: 10/10 Samantha Dalby has worked as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner since 2006. She provides care in a team setting to over 16,000 patients in Trent Hills. Samantha has a clinical interest in preventing and treating disease with nutrition.

If your bathtub is missing a little rubber ducky in early May, chances are he’s waddled over to Mill Creek in Warkworth for a fun rite of spring.

The Spring Walk & Rubber Duck Race brings together hundreds of spectators who cheer on 640+ ducks as they bob, drift and battle it out for 1st and 2nd place.

With winners declared, people continue on leisurely walks along the beautiful Millennium Trail, many wearing a badge with the name of a loved one now passed. Walkers are also given a packet of forget-menot flower seeds to scatter at home or at a new memorial garden at The Bridge Hospice if they wish.

Now in its 9th year, the event is an important fundraiser for The Bridge Hospice. It’s easy to join in – no registration fees. Participants are asked to simply donate on the day if they can and/or gather pledges in advance.

While some fly solo, many come in groups or teams – families, co-workers, service clubs, church groups etc. From 9:30 am, the Warkworth Arena is HQ for donations, kids’ activities and team photos prior to the duck launch at 10:30 am.

Event Chair and Hospice Board Director Kathleen Powe has overseen tremendous growth in the event’s popularity in the past few years.

“This is a fun all-ages gathering with amazing com-

munity support. It is a big fundraiser for us but it is also about engaging the community and making sure we get the word out about what we do as a hospice.”

100-Mile Diet Event Organizers Ensure Local Students Enjoy a Taste of Home

Organizers of an event that celebrates and showcases local food are leaving behind quite a legacy, one that has ensured many area students live apple-y ever after.

Members of St. Andrew’s United Church in Grafton recently held the 100-Mile Diet Event, donating $1,053 in proceeds from it to Northumberland Food For Thought (NFFT). Since the 100-Mile Diet Event was started 11 years ago, more than $11,000 raised has been donated to NFFT to support its work to coordinate Student Nutrition Programs at schools in Northumberland County. The funds have regularly gone towards the purchase of locally-grown apples to feed students in schools.

However, this latest donation to NFFT will also be the last, as event organizers confirm the Fall 2018 edition of the 100-Mile Diet event will also be the finale organized by St. Andrew’s.

“Over the years, buying local apples has been a very fitting use for the funds, given that the 100-Mile Diet Event has encouraged people to buy and enjoy food that is close to home,” says Beth Kolisnyk, the Community Development Coordinator with Northumberland Food For Thought. “While it’s sad to see the 100-Mile Diet Event end, we are so appreciative of all the time and effort organizers have put in to help ensure local students eat, learn and succeed in school.”

Diet Event organizers, is pleased at what’s been accomplished over 11 years to support local farmers and growers, as well as ensure students have the food they need to learn to their full potential. “We’re very proud that the money raised from an event that promotes Northumberland-grown food has been used to purchase fresh apples for the classroom, giving students a true taste of home,” she says. “It fits into the spirit of what we have tried to accomplish with the 100-Mile Diet Event.”

NFFT is the non-profit partnership that supports Student Nutrition Programs at schools across the region. Some programs offer a full sit-down breakfast before class starts, while others consist of snack bins delivered to classrooms.

These programs are free, voluntary, and play an important role in helping ensure students aren’t distracted by hunger and can learn in the classroom to their full potential.

Along with the support of residents, businesses and organizations, local Student Nutrition Programs also receive financial support from the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services through its lead local agency, the Peterborough Child and Family Centres.

It Is What It Is…

By Emmanuelle Keogh We are now in the heart of what I am calling “the big meltdown”. A season of transformation, when everything comes alive. Slowly. Snow turning from its solid form to liquid—rivers, streams and pools of it forming everywhere. Creating some worries for some of us as it can flood our basements and block up our sewer pipes.

I used to hate March as a month. In fact, I used to call November, January and March the “dark months”, and hated them all. The bleakness getting inside of me, leading me to feel really depressed.

Things have changed for the better. As a mindfulness meditation practitioner, I have consciously been cultivating acceptance in my life, “It is what it is” becoming one of my mantras. Instead of resisting so many things, I’m opening to them exactly as they are.

Thanks to this change of attitude, I have noticed a change in me.

One of these changes is my relationship to the weather and the cycle of seasons. I had no problem accepting the seasons I love. Winter and the brightness and purity of snow, the cold air that is energizing and makes home feel cozy. Spring, when the frogs give us concerts every night, when the

lilacs come to bloom. Summer months with the chance to go swimming at Crowe River, the chance to grow a vegetable garden and to be outside much later in the evenings. And our majestic fall season, the air crisp and the colours so vibrant.

We have no problem being with the pleasant. We become so easily attached to the pleasant, we want it all the time, and have great difficulty being with the darker times of our season cycle. Since I have been practicing acceptance in my life, I have been able to appreciate the in-between seasons.

In March the mud, brown grass, dog poo and the bits of garbage that appear, along with the lost mittens (often

under the dog poo!) and being able to see some kind of beauty in that.

I see in all of this a metaphor for our experience of life in general: There are the happy times, but there are also the darker times. We have been so conditioned to think that only the pleasant is to be. It is easy to become dissatisfied with our lives and complaining about the weather is part of this bad habit. Yet when able to be opened to what is, we can feel gratitude and see beauty, even in little things.

I like to stay away from weather forecasts. I like to welcome the weather as it is, every day, good or bad. It is a simple, playful practice. Try it too and see what happens!

Beware the Brownfields

By Susan Fedorka What are brownfields and why should you keep reading this?

Because back in “the good old days” people were not aware of the environmentally damaging impact their products or processes had and used and disposed of products that are banned today.

The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing believes there are approximately 20,000 – 30,000 brownfield sites across Canada, many of which are located on prime real estate in the heart of both urban and rural communities.

The Ministry defines brownfields as “vacant or underused sites with potential for redevelopment. They may be contaminated, often due to former industrial or commercial use”.

The key feature of a brownfield site is that it is being redeveloped. A brownfield may not necessarily be contaminated but it is assumed to be “unclean” because of the history of usage of the land.

Some former uses might include junkyards, landfills, gas stations, car repair shops or paint shops. Contaminants may include lead, mercury and arsenic. Until 1995, lead was found in gasoline and recent studies have shown that roadside soil still contain traces of

lead. Uses for arsenic include, among others, finishing leather and mercury was used for preserving paint.

The term “brownfield” was not coined until the mid-1980s so it is understandable that communities have built and re-built on lands that today would be considered brownfields. Land that was located in town was considered to be prime real estate so small businesses and homes were built. People were encouraged to live in town because there was infrastructure and services and it was felt that an active downtown would reduce crime and vandalism.

Most downtown brownfields were (and still are) too small for industrial buildings.

The law governing brownfield redevelopment states: “property owners and redevelopers must meet set requirements for: • assessing the environmental condition of a property through environmental site assessments • ensuring that the site meets the applicable site condition standards or standards specified in a risk assessment • submitting a record of site condition for filing in Ontario’s Environment Site Registry”

The Brownfields Statute Law Amendment Act, 2011 was also created by the Ministry. This legislation removed barriers relating to regulatory liability, financing and planning.

The Province of Ontario created the Office of the Brownfields Coordinator to help municipalities build capacity in the urban areas (downtowns).

Many brownfields have excellent potential for residential and retail development since they are often located in, or close to, the downtown core which already has access to utilities and roads. Increasing density in the downtown core will create more economic and social activity.

Canadians of all ages are now looking to reduce their environmental footprint and are looking to live in smaller residences that are closer to amenities. Seniors want to ensure that as they age, they don’t become isolated, especially if they are unable to drive and many would prefer to live in town.

Cleaning up and repurposing brownfields into price-appropriate housing, retail businesses and restaurants will increase the vitality of a community and increase the tax base for a municipality.

After our March break we are back to school with new activities. Recently, my class got to visit Warkworth’s Centre & Main Chocolate Factory and it was one of my favourite trips! We learned how chocolate is made and we even got to taste some of the delicious treats. My favourite part of the trip was definitely seeing the freeze dryer and the chocolate molds. Another trip we took was to the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough.

My friends and I learned about the interesting history of canoes. We also enjoyed trying to paddle in the tipping canoe. Back in class we had our Maker Club It has been a long winter, but spring is finally here and many of us will be hitting the trails for biking, walking, dog-walking, ATVing and horseback riding.

Trent Hills is home to many equine enthusiasts from show to pleasure, western to English.

We are blessed with beautiful trails, including the multi-use Trans Canada Trail, quaint sideroads and spectacular views.

What better way to explore Trent Hills than on horseback?

For experienced riders and horses it is enjoyable, however, at times it can be eventful.

Equestrians can come across pedestrians, dogs, and vehicles and all can be negotiated calmly and safely with some common courtesy and communication.

For your safety and the horseback riders, here are some tips to help you know what to do when you come across riders on the trail. It is important to understand that horses are flight animals and when spooked can react dangerously. Most riders know their horses extremely well, and each horse is an individual so trusting the rider to tell you how to proceed is the most important thing you can do.

If you are on foot, please move over to the side, say hello and ask how to proceed. Most riders will politely tell you what to do so you can pass each other safely. If you have a dog, do not allow the dog to rush and sniff at the horse. Horses are prey animals and will see that as a threat and possibly kick at your

dog. Not a good situation for you, your dog or the rider. Most horses are used to their own dogs, but they will expect your strange dog to stay on their side of the trail.

Bicycle riders present a special challenge for horses as they are quiet and can sneak up on the horse. Bicyclists, please slow to a stop, announce your presence from a safe distance and allow time for the rider to move their horse over to the side for you to pass slowly. The biker who whizzes past without slowing risks their own safety and the riders.

ATV and dirt bike drivers please pull over, turn off your engines and speak to the riders. Horses are comforted by the human voice and that will help to recognize that the machine is not a monster and has a human driver. Many times, experienced trail horses are used to ATVs and dirt bikes and their riders will wave you on to pass them, but please not too fast. Stone and dirt kicked up at the horse could cause a major injury to it and the rider.

That brings us to vehicles. When you see the horseback riders, please slow and pass widely, and please DO NOT honk! The rider has heard you coming and has been preparing by moving over as far as he or she can with their horse.

And to all horseback riders, remember most of the general public do not understand horses, so be polite, be friendly, engage in conversation and smile!

We are also making mobiles in the style of American sculptor and innovative mobile maker Alexander Calder. I am making a solar system mobile. Outside of school, Warkworth just had the annual Maple Syrup Festival with many fun activities to celebrate spring.

When I went downtown, I saw miniature horses. The best treat I had that day was True Saffron cotton candy!

“Happiness is being yourself”.

I believe there is some explanation on what is involved in ‘being’ yourself. There are essentially three parts and they all affect the choices we make.

The first part is about being in alignment. Just like a car or your spine, if things are out of alignment, they don’t feel right and they don’t function at their best. Try nodding your head and saying ‘no’ or shaking it and saying ‘yes’. How does that feel? They are mixed messages and cause confusion within us. How often do we do this, say one thing and think another? Being in alignment means that what we think, say and do are all aligned with our truth (what feels right for us).

“Say what you mean and mean what you say.”

The second part is about being in this moment; not holding on to the past or worrying about the future. The only time we can make a choice is in the present moment, that is where the power is. We can’t be aligned with what feels right if our minds are riddled with regrets from the past or fear of the future. CKOL Your Local Radio Station

By Nikki Fotheringham CKOL was founded by David Lockwood in 1992. David’s enthusiasm for this scrappy little station knows no bounds. His first efforts to bring music to Campbellford started in 1988 when he put speakers on the streets for the Christmas parade. Since then, CKOL has grown from strength to strength, buoyed by David’s love of music and an unparalleled dedication to the promotion of the Trent Hills community.

When he was just 18 years old, David would hang out on the steps of CKEY radio in Toronto. He would run errands, fetch coffee and help in any way he could.

Eventually he would spend three years producing late night Saturday show there before starting his own electronics business. After 35 years in electronics, he moved to Campbellford where he decided to set up his own broadcasting station.

It wasn’t an easy process and his license was rejected three times before he finally got the go ahead. “It sure wasn’t easy getting started here,” David says.

“I had to apply three times but I knew that a radio station would help promote local artists and businesses.”

CKOL has done just that, regularly featuring local artists and promoting events and businesses in the area. This vibrant little station is run entirely by volunteers. This ragtag band of dedicated patrons give up their time to provide Trent Hills residents with great music and news on local events. CKOL also acts at the emergency broadcaster for the region.

The station has grown over the years, boosting its power from 50 to 500 watts and adding a sister station in Madoc.

“The youngest broadcaster we ever had was just four years old,” David says. “He had a Saturday morning show which he did with his mom until he was eight.

The oldest broadcaster was 86 and he was with us for several years before going into a nursing home.”

CKOL relies on local advertising to stay afloat. “I don’t take grants,” says David.

“I would rather that money go to people in need or the hospital. Instead, we have some amazing advertisers that have been with us from the start and help to keep us on the air.” You can advertise for as little as $20 and the radio station has a wide reach and enthusiastic listeners.

ArtWorth Celebrates Belonging

What does it mean to belong? What can we do to help someone have a strong sense of belonging to their community? These are just some of the questions that will be explored by the young campers this summer at ArtWorth Trent Hills Art Camp.

ArtWorth was founded 14 years ago by a small group of artists and parents who had the vision of helping to develop the next generation of artists and arts appreciation. Every summer, approximately 40 young people aged 7 to 13 have created, danced and performed.

A major strength of the ArtWorth program is the artistic talent of the mentors who work with the children. Northumberland is home to many professional artists practicing an amazing range of art forms.

Campers have worked with leading painters, potters, fabric artists, costume designers,

musicians, choreographers and many other incredibly talented artists.

This summer’s program will be no exception as we explore “Belonging” through story telling, mask and puppet making, nature walks and other art forms. Campers will develop their own narratives with the assistance of Rick Beaver a First Nations artist and ecologist, Jan Thornhill a published author of children’s books and Marjorie Willoughby an accomplished arts educator.

Puppets, mask making and theatrical set design will be lead by Delphine White a leading costume designer, Christine Wright a fashion designer and Carolyn Meggil an accomplished painter, all of whom were heavily involved in the creation of the oversized puppets for last summers Warkworth By Night parade and street festival.

For the organizers of ArtWorth, a key measure of success is the fact that approximately fifty percent of participants are returning campers. Many children participate for four or five years … and then some come back as teen volunteers. The new ArtWorth website (www. artworth.ca) makes it easy and quick for parents or grandparents to register their children, complete the release form and make an e-transfer for payment. This summer, the Junior Camp runs from July 15 - 19 for children 7-9, while the Senior Camp for children 10-13 runs from July 22 -16. Camp activities run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with base camp at St. Paul’s United Church Warkworth.

Teen volunteers can also complete an on-line registration through the website, and all hours can be counted towards your Community Service hours.

3 Ways to Preserve Citrus Zest in 10 Minutes or Less

It’s the end of winter and start of spring – the time of year I start getting itchy in the kitchen! I’m feeling ready to bust out of my sweaters and blankets and looking for exciting flavours that tell me that the cold of winter is soon to be a memory of the past.

Many people think of ‘preserving’ as something done only in the summer or fall.

In our house it’s a 12-month activity. We ‘put food up’ in many ways which include jam and jelly and wonderful pickles that are sealed in mason jars but there are many other ways to do so. Today we’ll show you 3 super simple recipes for using peel and pith from citrus fruit that can add a burst of sun to your kitchen and cooking.

You’ll only need the zest and/ or peel for these so they are a great way to use the discards from fruit you’re already using for something else.

Lemon Salt

Before squeezing a lemon, remove the zest (just the yellow part with as little white pith as possible) by ‘shaving’ the lemon with a vegetable peeler.

Use a knife to cut the removed

sections into long, thin strips then rotate 90 degrees and chop into tiny squares. Place this in a jar and cover with 2-3 times the volume in salt (any amount will do). Cover and shake 2-3 times a day for a few days.

The salt will absorb the oils from the zest and become an infused salt. Use it like salt.

This is wonderful with fish or to finish a simple salad made with arugula, parmesan, olive oil and lemon.

The salt will keep, covered, for years though I like to use it in a few months for maximum flavour.

Maple Orange Syrup

The next time you peel an orange, wash it first and place the peels (zest and pith) in a small sauce pan. Cover in maple syrup and bring to a simmer and taste – you should notice the syrup is pleasantly sweet and bitter.

If it becomes too bitter, add

more maple syrup. Not bitter enough? Cook a little longer (the flavour will also develop as it is stored). Remove the peels and store in fridge.

This is amazing on french toast, used as a glaze on meat or fish or used any way you would normally use maple syrup. Store in fridge as long as you would store maple syrup.

Grapefruit Bitters

The next time you eat a grapefruit, keep its peels in large pieces. Turn a BBQ to high and char (yes, that really means burn) them over high heat.

They should be at least 50% charred but don’t need to be solid black.

Place the peels, while still warm, in a jar and cover with Vodka (rum or bourbon also work). You’ll notice the colour darken right away and it will continue to darken (and become more bitter) over time.

This can be stored on a shelf forever.

Add a few drops of these bitters to your favorite cocktail (a gin and tonic is great), pancake batter, french toast or icing for cakes and sweets.

It really is this easy

Preserving can be just this easy! And don’t be afraid to experiment – orange bitters are great and lime salt is just as awesome. Make a little bit at a time and see what you like!

Small-Town Squash Hospitality

Rob Pope and Eric Hudson enjoying one of two refurbished squash courts in Campbellford I’ll admit to my rural inferiority complex, but I just love it when a small town punches above its weight.

This month, the 2nd Annual Campbellford Back Country Squash Classic will host some of the finest players in Ontario including David Sly, currently the third-best Masters squash player in the world. Sly won the inaugural event last year when his tour schedule looked like this: Saint Petersburg, Russia; Budapest, Hungary; Munich, Germany… Campbellford. Following his victory here last year, Sly went on to win the Canadian Men’s 50+ National Championship, and he continues to hold a top-10 ranking among all players in Ontario squash.

So, why do David Sly and a number of other elite squash stars like to play in Campbellford?

“I don’t know if you’ve seen our logo?” asks Ben McKeown with a grin. “It’s a squash player drinking a beer.”

Ben is one of the prime organizers behind the resurgence of squash. While typical squash culture favours rankings, fitness and green smoothies, the Campbellford crew has developed a counter-culture that is welcoming, fun-loving and extremely social.

“When our curling and squash club was first constructed, it was really the squash players that led the charge,” says Nan McDougall, President of the CDCRC Board. “Curling and fitness have dominated more recently, so we’re excited to see the squash leagues growing again.”

The big news this spring, aside from the Easter weekend tournament hospitality, is a $16,000 squash court renovation that was completed in March and funded by an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.

“Nan and the Board really came through for squash,” says Ben. “We were thinking maybe 3-5 years down the road we’d have enough fundraising from this tournament to get the courts done. Then the Board initiated the Trillium submission and did a lot of great work to get it done.”

Nan and the CDCRC Board had recently experienced an unsuccessful Trillium grant submission when a pitch to renovate the kitchen was turned down because it was deemed “not ac-

tive enough” (an army of bonspiel cooks and dishwashers beg to differ).

“After the kitchen was a nogo, we figured… if squash isn’t ‘active enough’, then what is?” laughs Nan. Last month’s court renovation included re-sanding the floors and replacing the plaster front walls with a new surface that you’ll find in most squash clubs today. The outcome, according to Ben, is one of the best squash setups in the province.

“That said, we are losing a home-court advantage,” he laments. “It’s a thing called ‘lengths’—which I’m not good at by the way—where you want the second bounce to die on the back wall. With our plaster front wall, you had to hit it a bit harder, which took visitors a few games to get used to.

We’re gonna be better on the road now, but we like winning at home because then we get to extend the celebration after the game.”

“Professionals sprint 4 to 5km per game,” notes Ben. “We don’t do quite that, but I’ve never walked off a hockey rink as tired as I feel walking off a squash court. It’s a better workout minus the cuts, bruises and concussions.”

Ben and Nan both agree that if squash is the fastest grower in the garden of local activities, then the green thumb belongs to Rob Pope.

“Popey deserves a huge amount of credit,” insists Ben. “He was among the youngest players back when squash was big here; now he’s the elder statesman.

He grabbed everybody and started a house league, then basically forced us to play in the Kawartha League. Once we realized how much fun it was, we started recruiting even more and younger guys.”

The 2nd Annual Campbellford Back Country Squash Classic takes place April 19 & 20 and is open to men and women of all abilities including an “over 60 and Social” draw. What a great time to think about your spring and summer wardrobe. I hope that this article will provide you with information and possibly a new perspective regarding how we can all think differently about our clothing choices – and take action to work towards a healthier planet. I want to make it perfectly clear that I am not an expert on clothing or fashion. What I can say is that I have done a deep dive into the internet to learn about the impact of clothing choices on our personal carbon footprint and environmental impact. Here are six bits of information from the World Economic Forum this March: 1) The clothing and fashion industry produces 10% of the greenhouse gas emissions – more than the aviation and shipping industries combined 2) Every second, one garbage truck full of textiles is either burned or dumped into landfill and 3 out of 5 items we buy are thrown away within one year 3) Washing one synthetic garment releases about 2,000 plastic microfibers into the ocean and food chain 4) It takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton shirt – more than one person drinks in 2.5 years 5) 120 million trees are cut each year to make clothes. 30% of the rayon and viscose used in clothing comes from endangered and ancient forests.

6) Up to 16% of the world’s pesticides are used in cotton farming every year, degrading and polluting water and poisoning cotton pickers.

Now let’s look at a fairly common outfit and example from www.ecotricity.co.uk in the United Kingdom: The list shows the equivalent kilograms of CO2 produced over the course of the item’s life cycle (including disposal): • Jeans – a pair of Levis 501 jeans - 33kg • Running Shoes – a typical pair made from synthetic materials – 14kg • T-Shirt – pure cotton t-shirt made in China – 9kg • Polyester Jacket – 18kg • Underwear – 2kg This particular outfit includes items I wear and purchase on a frequent basis – it might be similar for you. The total impact from this unassuming wardrobe is about 76 kg of CO2! That is roughly equivalent to driving from Ottawa to Quebec City.

Just imagine what the total when multiplied by millions if not billions of people around the world!

So what can we all do about it? Applying the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) works for clothing as it does for most types of consumption impacting the environment. First, look for ways to stretch what we have further – consider investing in longer lasting clothes – remember on average 85% of our clothes end up in landfill! Next, consider buying vintage or used clothing – or something that you or someone else has up cycled – consid-

When finished with a particular piece of clothing, try donating it so it can be repurposed or reused – or include it at your next exchange party. When purchasing new clothes, we can look for garments made from eco-friendly materials – including bamboo, silk, organic cotton, tencel, recycled denim, hemp and recycled polyester. We Are Not The Nearings

by Margaret Santon In the mid seventies, survivalism was the rage. Every bookstore had a section on how to build and stock a bomb shelter, how to be self-sufficient in food or how to build your own house in the wilderness. I was definitely interested in the fallout shelter literature as I was suffering from an atomic bomb phobia and sure that apocalyptic times were fast approaching. I had even written to the Government of Canada asking for their information on the subject. They sent me a fat envelope whose contents included a little book called Fallout on the Farm. It instructed me, as a farmer, to get out the tractor and remove topsoil from my fields and put it somewhere.

Then, get some more clean, non-radioactive soil and spread it around.

Voila! A working farm again. Even though I was born and bred in the big city, I knew this was ludicrous.

Survivalism lost its appeal, at least for me. However, I discovered that I had an interesting collection of books on the slightly related subject of homesteading. I decided I wanted us to be self-sufficient. That meant living in the country, building our own energy-efficient house, growing everything we ate, baking bread and milk-

ing goats.

Among the books I’d acquired and poured over were the writings of Helen and Scott Nearing on what they labeled “The Good Life”. In several volumes they chronicled their experience back in the thirties when Scott was fired from his job as an economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania for belonging to the Communist Party. I became a huge fan of their dedication to sane living and intended to emulate them when we homesteaded. They were the real pioneers, models for many back-to-thelanders. Meanwhile, I should have been listening as Rick declared, “I’m not your Scott Nearing.” I took him seriously but, for many years, I thought I could work around his disinterest.

While we still lived in Oshawa, I learned to garden and to bake bread. I met Glenda and partnered with her to establish a curbside recycling program there. She had already been a hippie homesteader. She’d even looked after a herd of goats and she taught me a great deal, much of which I couldn’t apply until I had the right rural setting But it was not to be. Many years passed before I accepted that fact. I finally

made a conscious decision to be happy with things just as they were. I realized my efforts had yielded much that contributed to a good life for us even though it fell short of my homesteading dream. For instance, I learned I’m a lousy gardener. My family would starve on the produce of my vegetable plot. I continued to putter and, in the process, I learned that I write well about gardening which resulted in over a decade of columns in the local newspaper.

He was also willing to come with me to visit Helen Nearing in Maine, Scott had died following his one hundredth birthday. The afternoon we spent with her at their Forest Farm remains a highlight of my life regardless of the fact that I couldn’t follow in her footsteps as fully as I would have liked.

She showed us all around her house

and garden. I could see that Rick would never be inclined to work in as disciplined a fashion as Scott. Not many would. The garden wall at Forest Farm illustrated Scott’s work ethic: four hundred and twenty feet long and four feet high with another four feet in the ground for a foundation.

The whole structure is made of rocks found on the property and carried by hand to the site over a period of years.

I still have all my books on self-sufficiency and I love to look at them. I remind myself that Thoreau’s experiment at Walden Pond was just that and only lasted a bit more than two years.

I’m satisfied that my dabbling has taught me some good lessons. They are mainly spiritual lessons. Who knows what kind of trouble I might be in if Rick hadn’t abridged my plans.

Winter Friends

By Graham Wilson The winter months can drag, depending on your tolerance for snow shoveling, Michelin Man and Teletubby attire, frozen extremities, and black ice. One redeeming factor for the winter-phobic is the sight and sound of wildlife that’s more tolerant of the season.

Hence the popularity of bird feeders.

One of the most common (i.e., frequently seen, and most abundant) winter birds in southern Ontario is a plump sparrow with a pink, seed-eating bill, smartly decked out with dark grey tunic atop a white belly, reminiscent of a rather stout waiter in a classy restaurant (Fig. 1). When in flight, white flashes from the outer tail feathers are a good clue to identification. The owner of all this formal wear is the slate-coloured junco, a regular at bird feeders. Unlike many small birds, the junco generally prefers to feed on the ground, and is typically seen there, hopping about and consuming grain spilt from above by some of the other customers.

You may spy a single bird but, if you wait a few minutes, there are often two, or four or more, a small feeding flock.

They may perch and peck

on a larger platform feeder, but seldom tarry on a smaller vantage point, such as the rim of a typical seed feeder.

Basing themselves in or beneath a hedge, they advance to scour the lawn (aka snowy waste) for goodies. Juncos are, for the most part, winter visitors in the region. The chart (histogram, if you will, Fig. 2) gathers together junco sightings from 877 days over a 20-year period in the Campbellford area (the eastern half of Trent Hills municipality, historically known as Seymour township). The data (1999-2018) do not speak to the number of individual birds you may see, but rather the relative chances of seeing one or more juncos in a given month. The record is not perfect: I was not present every day, nor even every month, in every year – far from it - and nor do I make observations on a fixed schedule. Some days there would be one junco, other days eight or more.

The junco has a simple calendar, though each year is different. Most prefer to skip the worst of the boreal winter by migration. Some may reach the Gulf of Mexico, but this snowbird (as it was known in times past) is often content to tarry half the year in

A very few may perhaps stay year-round (just five sightings in the May-September period), but most head north with spring to breed, as far as the shores of James and Hudson bays.

protected”. Happily, a century on, the junco remains a frequent seasonal guest here.

The junco is perhaps less striking than the larger blue jay and cardinal, but it often occurs with other winter regulars. The latter include the black-capped chickadee and other “feeder friends” such as house finch, American goldfinch, white-breasted nuthatch and downy woodpecker. A challenging winter, perhaps with ice cover to the north, may bring irruptions of even more resolute northerners, such as white-winged crossbill, pine grosbeak,

snow bunting, and common redpoll (a pair showed up on 20 February, and flocks of up to 26 birds through 11 March).

The third component is being with what is. We have all ‘shoulds’ going on in our head, ‘this should be this way’, or ‘I should do that’. People are doing exactly what it is we feel is appropriate (according to our beliefs and expectations). If our thoughts are wrapped up in what ‘should be’ rather than what is, we don’t have clarity and cannot make aligned choices.

So, what does ‘being yourself ‘look like? For me, it began with awareness. I started to notice what I was feeling, when something ‘tweaked’ me (my triggers) or when I was saying ‘yes’ to something that in my heart was a ‘no’. I learned to a) slow down, come back to my breath, and allow that ‘trigger’ to subside, b) check in with what felt right for me and c) choose to say or act on that feeling, rather than the hurt or fearful one caused by the trigger which would ultimately lead to some type of regret.

I have learned to be true to myself and to stop the cycle of creating regret, remorse or resentment. A lot of what we do is simply out of habit, and habits can be changed.

We have free will and are the only ones responsible for what we say, think and do. We are the creators of our reality and by developing an awareness of who we truly are and understanding the power we have in creating our life, we can have the life we dream of. We are all born magnificent. If you don’t feel that way about yourself, it’s because you are not really being you. Know yourself, be yourself and believe in yourself. You have everything you need!

Lenni Workman Even on the dullest of days, Lenni Workman’s studio is a riot of colour and light. “I recreate the garden in here in the winter,” says Lenni. Her life has two distinctive seasons; in the summer she works in her organic garden growing vegetables and flowers for sale at the market. She takes pictures of the bounty that she grows.

In the winter months, she uses the photos as inspiration to paint botanicals so real you won’t know the canvas from the photograph.

“My interest as a visual artist is the transient nature of light. In particular, light’s ability to abstract, define and dramatize form and space.

I use the camera to capture these fleeting moments and use a photo as reference for my painting,” says Lenni.

“Scale is very important in my work. By enlarging a detail of nature, I express my respect for the natural environment and acknowledge the powerful web of life of which we are all part.”

Lenni’s seasonal activities mean she always has something to look forward too.

“When I’m in the garden, I’m dreaming about painting,” she says. In the fall I love to gather my paints and brushes and ready my canvases—I can’t wait to start. In the winter, I plan my spring gardens and look forward to the outdoor physical activity.”

Lenni has an exhibition every

second year at the Galerie St. Laurent + Hill in Ottawa. This will be the 35th year the gallery has represented her work.

“I do paint with the exhibition in mind,” she says. “I know the walls of the gallery so well and I can visualize how the paintings will come together.”

Lenni has always had a passion for art, but it wasn’t a subject that was offered at school. After the first two years of university, she switched to St. Lawrence College where she completed the fine arts program. “Sadly, there are few artists who can make a living from art, so I’ve always done something else,” Lenni explains. She has supplemented her income with stained glass, teaching, scenic painting at the CBC and her organic produce. Lenni grows organic fruits, vegetables and flowers which she sells on Fridays at the Warkworth Market and on Saturdays at the Cobourg Farmers’ Market.

Mind Body Intelligence

Are we still at the point where we believe that our mind operates separately and distinctly on its own? It is called PNI psychoneuroimmunology, and another called NIG neuro-immuno-gastroenterology. It is the study that determines the interconnectedness between these systems. And, yes there is scientific evidence that these connections do exist. These connections are connected to stress, our emotions, mood, hormones and mental function.

When we have symptoms that do not fit into a nice neat box, what happens? Many are left with no answers. Some are sent for a battery of tests, referred to specialists, or try to be their own investigator and self-prescribe supplements.

Often spending a lot of money and time to have very little to no change. An alarming number of these patients are women. Many with autoimmune conditions, and a term now know as the ‘Western Cluster’. A set of chronic symptoms that leave many with memory focus problems, hormonAvenueand al imbalances, insomnia, deON K0Lpression, 1L0 anxiety, chronically overwhelmed and carrying weight that won’t budge. Many of these patients are ignored, and then, prescribed an anti-depressant or anti-anxi-

ety medication. And please do not mistake that naturopathic medicine is anti-pharmaceuticals. We have them for a reason when people are in crisis and just cannot function. But, there is a system of medicine that does address the mind and body as a whole and understands the connections of these systems. It is called naturopathic medicine, and there are some MD’s that practice ‘functional medicine’ but essentially it is naturopathic medicine.

Where does this system of medicine shine? In the grey zones. The grey zone is when you are not sick enough to be diagnosed with a disease but still feel unwell. In other words, you know you are not operating the way you used to.

All of the testing, scopes, scans come back normal – you are as fit as a fiddle – but you know you don’t feel well. It’s these 40 shades of grey naturopathic medicine excels at. It is all about knowing how to use both systems of medicine – conventional and naturopathic, then integrating them to get the best outcome. The Notion of Water

Chapter 8

The water moved slowly. It looked like black velvet in the moonlight. Celine took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Her arms were crossed, and she stood rigidly beside Joe. He waited for her, hoping a vision would come.

In the darkness, a flag flapped on a mast and the city grew quiet. His bones were soaked with a cold ache and he shuddered as he breathed in the cold lake air. Searching for his son had exhausted him to his core. He was beginning to lose hope he would ever find him. He needed to focus on something else. Celine looked out over the water, her brow furrowed, her eyes narrowed.

“What was her name?” Joseph asked.

Celine’s body spasmed like she had been shocked.

“Her name is Stella.”

Joseph had let that one slip.

He had referred to Celine’s twin in the past tense, as if she was no longer alive. It was a subconscious mistake that gave them both chills. “Let’s just see what we can see in the morning. It’s almost morning anyways.” The pair walked back to Lola’s Hideout and soon were asleep, each laying across a booth in the bar.

Joe woke up first and watched Celine. Her eyelids flickered and she mumbled restlessly in her sleep. He loved her so much and had never told her.

This was the day he would tell her how he felt. He was overwhelmed with emotion and a few hours sleep hadn’t done anything to soothe his feelings of guilt and worry. He stepped outside to think and the wind blew his morning tears dry.

There was a commotion on one of the docks, with a few men looking into the water. Joe stood frozen in his place, with his back against

the door to Lola’s Hideout.

He watched, hesitant to go and see what was there. Deep down, he already knew.

Celine was asleep when the ambulance arrived. Paramedics rushed to the end of the dock carrying a stretcher and Joseph knew.

The memories came back in fragments at first, then flooded into him. He stood motionless, barely breathing as he watched the scene unfold and remembered the night his mind had blocked out. The night he went to meet his son’s love.

They had agreed to meet by the water and take a stroll to see Celine. His son wanted to meet the woman his father secretly loved and wanted his father to meet Stella. Joseph approached the couple as they were embracing, passionately kissing in the sunset. He thought he saw his son kissing the woman he loved.

It was her twin, but he didn’t know that. He rushed forward to pull them apart but was stronger in his fury and Stella fell into the water. Her body broke the surface, and then it closed up and was still for a moment.

Joseph and Joe, a father and son, reunited as adults, but still strangers, in love with two woman who looked like one. They stared at each other, both in anger and shock.

Neither could find the words.

The next second, Stella appeared at the surface, sputtering, gulping water and flailing her arms. Her eyes were wide and wild. She sank and disappeared. Joe turned from his father, stripped off his heavy wool coat and jumped in after her.

Joseph was so confused. He watched his son come up for air.

“What have you done!? You maniac!” Joe shouted from

the water, before taking a deep breath and going under again.

Joseph opened his mouth but couldn’t speak. There was nobody to ask for help. He jumped in too.

The cold lake water made his muscles seize and freeze. It clung to him and pulled him down. His eyes stung. He could feel the water moving around him, but he couldn’t see through the dark murkiness. He felt around, grabbing at slimy weeds, but felt no hand, heard no muffled calls for help. As he made his way back to the surface, something grabbed at his leg, and without thought, he kicked it off. Joseph pulled himself from the water. The surface slowly calmed, and its black depths revealed no signs of life. He pulled his son’s coat towards him and wrapped it around himself. It was too horrible to remember and so his mind had erased it. He didn’t need to search anymore. He had found the reason his son was gone. It was him.

He heard a gasp from behind him. Celine had opened the door just as the paramedics were pulling something up from between two moored boats. She pushed Joe aside and ran towards the water.

Rachel Whitton Heads Up the Campbellford District Racquet and Curling Club

By Susan Pomfret After four months on the job, Rachel Whitton is feeling pretty comfortable with her position as Manager of the Campbellford District Racquet and Curling Club (CDCRC).

She took the reins in December after job shadowing for a month with retiring Manager Eunice Stapley, who held the position for 13 years.

“The job is really cool,” says Rachel with a smile. “I’m learning a lot.” When the job posting first appeared, she wasn’t at all sure that she wanted to apply despite a long-standing relationship with the club. She had just returned to her home town of Campbellford after a one-year post-education sabbatical in New Zealand. She purchased a home in Campbellford after deciding that the time was right to make a big commitment.

Rachel began curling in grade 7, largely motivated by the fact that curling was one of the few activities that her very active sister was not engaged in. The youth curling program was huge in those days and there was endless opportunity to play. She and her teammates, skip Katherine Nicholas, Tess Brown and Holly Curle, have played together on and off over the years, bringing in substitute to fill in when one of them was out of the area to attend school. They’ve played together in provincial championships and are still a team to this day.

Despite her youth, Rachel already has an interesting resume. A “joiner” from an early age, she served on student council and the youth advisory committee at her school.

She took culinary arts courses at George Brown College and completed a diploma in hotel & restaurant management at Algonquin College in Ottawa. She completed her placement at the high-end Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Jasper, Alberta, where she found the exposure to management of a five-star facility invaluable.

The year she spent in New Zealand was memorable. She and a friend embarked on the adventure after completing their schooling and settled in Milford Sound, a rain forest in Fiordland National Park on South Island. Rachel worked as a cook on a 10-day on, 4-day off schedule which allowed the friends to travel and experience the country on their extended weekends. “We met the coolest people from all over the world,” she says. They moved on to the north end of the continent where they lived in tents for months and picked kiwi fruit for a living.

Her primary goals include increasing revenues through rentals as well as large events like a wedding show booked for September 2019, the club accommodates small, shortterm celebrations like birthday and anniversary parties in the lounge area. Wine glasses and dishes are also available for rent to accommodate events off-site.

Rachel says her focus is to ensure that the members are happy with the experiences and facilities available to them.

Restoration of the club’s squash courts has recently been completed and the CDCRC offers kettlebell, yoga, boot camp, spin and meditation classes which are free to members as well as accessible to the public for a drop-in fee.
