BC Cyclists Anxious To Get Rolling Again By Paul Morgan Special to the Times It is increasingly obvious that Brevard College has the premier cycling program in America. In the cycling world, the phrase “Brevard is coming” strikes fear in the hearts of the members of other teams. And that’s the problem. In an odd way, the BC team has become a victim of its own success. “The team has won four out of the last five U.S. collegiate mountain biking championships and two consecutive cyclocross national championships,” head coach Brad Perley said. “So, when we went to the Road Nationals for the first time ever last May, and only finished second, everyone wanted to know what had happened.” Expectations are much the same as Perley and the reigning national champion Tornados prepare for the fall mountain biking season. It’s a position that many a cycling coach across the country would like to be in. The 2013-14 season was huge for BC. Then head coach Brian Sheedy’s charges began the year with strong showings at races hosted by Georgia Tech and East Tennessee State. BC then hosted, and won, the Southeastern Conference Championships in Brevard in October. Still in October, the Tornados traveled to snow-

covered Beech Mountain, N.C., where they competed in, and won, the Mountain Biking National Championship yet again. In January, the team journeyed to Boulder, Colo. and took home its second straight Cyclocross National Championship. Later in January, Sheedy turned the head coaching chores over to two year assistant, and Maine native, Perley, as the Tornados began preparations for Road Nationals in Richmond, Va. The second place national road race showing featured strong performances from several BC riders. Tornado junior Allison Arensman, a N.C. native, went into the record books as the first rider in Brevard College history to win an individual national championship at Road Nationals. Her performance was supported by strong showings from Sarah Hill, Nicole Miranda, Nick Jowsey, Brandon Milit, Caleb Welborn and Lewis Gaffney. New York native Milet graduated from BC in May, and was quickly named Perley’s assistant coach. Hill is a South African, Jowsey from New Zealand and Miranda from Ohio. Welborn, a Texan, and Gaffney, a New Mexican, also graduated in May and are working and racing in the Brevard area. In addition to Milet, Coach Perley is supported by veteran volunteer assistants Sheedy and Neko

BC cyclists take off in last year’s only home event, hosted at Adventure Village in Rosman. BC races there again Aug. 30-31. Mulally. Sheedy’s national and international cycling experience is long and deep; Mulally, a recent addition, is considered one of the top downhill mountain bikers in the world. So, what will this fall’s mountain bike season bring for the Tornados? Coach Purley’s eyes light up when he replays his impressive roster in his head. “On the women’s side, Sarah Hill is one of the strongest mountain bikers in the conference, and Zac Valdez and Cypress Gorry are the men’s leaders,” Purley said. Valdez, a sophomore from California, has two national titles under his belt from last year; Gorry, a junior from Arizona, was injured most of the 2013-14 season, but was a member of two national title-win-

ning teams the year before. The Tornados open the fall cycling season Aug. 30-31 as they host the Brevard Home Mountain Bike Race. Some 20 teams from

across the Southeastern U.S. will compete here. “I’m excited about this year,” Coach Perley said. “We feel good about our prospects, but we’re well

aware of the strengths of the schools that we compete with.” Paul Morgan is a retired journalist and journalism professor.

Tornado Football Faces Difficult Road In 2014 By Randall Stewart BC Sports Information The Brevard College football team will look to improve upon last season’s 3-8 mark as the Tornados enter their eighth season of full NCAA Division II membership and seventh campaign under the leadership of head coach Paul Hamilton. Brevard will play what many consider to be the most difficult schedule in Division II this season. The 2014 slate features back-to-back road contests against Division I opponents Western Carolina and Liberty to open the season. In conference play, the Tornados will face three teams ranked in last year’s final Division II poll, including national runners-up Lenoir-Rhyne. Brevard’s home games against last season’s No. 2-ranked Bears and fellow South Atlantic Conference opponent Wingate will be broadcast locally on WMYA My40, marking the second and third times in program history that the Tornados will appear on television. “I don’t think there are any Division II teams in the country that open with a tougher first five games than we do,” said Hamilton. After playing the first two games of the season on the road at Division I

opponents, the Tornados welcome last year’s No. 17 team in CarsonNewman to Brevard Memorial Stadium before traveling to North Greenville and hosting national championship participant Lenoir-Rhyne. “We’re going to have to be a very good football team early on for this season to be successful,” he said. A year ago, the Tornados were one of the most disciplined teams in the nation, finishing with the third-fewest penalties and penalty yardage of any Division II team and were fifth nationally with just 12 turnovers on the season. Brevard’s potent triple option offensive attack allowed the Tornados to amass 258.9 rushing yards per contest, the 12th-best total in the country and third among South Atlantic Conference teams. The Tornados return three starters on an offensive line that cleared the way for Tornados’ running backs to gain 2,848 yards on the ground last season, an average 4.65 yards per carry. Preseason second team all-conference selection Kelvin Jeter will be called upon to spearhead the Tornados’ running game. The fifth-year senior from Gastonia, North Carolina led Brevard’s three-headed rushing attack with 800

yards on the ground. He is Brevard’s all-time leader in rushing yards (2,520), total offense (2,520), and all-purpose yards (3,770), and ranks third with 6.83 yards per carry over the course of his career. Joining Jeter in the backfield is Andre Overholt, a first team allconference selection as a kick return specialist. A senior from Tryon, Overholt set a program record with 1,024 kick return yards last season and needs just 114 rushing yards to break 1,000 in a Brevard uniform. His career average of 6.76 yards per carry is fourth on Brevard’s alltime list, and he led the team last season with an astonishing 8.0 yards per carry. He has gained 3,016 all-purpose yards in his career, good for second in program history. Rounding out the Tornados’ rushing attack will be Jordan Ollis, a senior from Columbus who was Brevard’s second-leading rusher with 786 yards in 2013. He finished second in the conference with 11 rushing touchdowns on the season, which tied a Brevard single-season mark, and can become the Tornados’ all-time leader in touchdowns with nine scores this season. His best game in 2013 came in the 52-33 triumph over Tusculum on

Nov. 9 in which he scored five touchdowns, including four on the ground, to set a Brevard single-game record. The Football Gazette named him second team all-region for his performance in 2013. Senior Tanner Wright is penciled in as the starting quarterback. In seven games played last year, Wright went 20-of-38 passing for 305 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He also picked up 195 yards on the ground and reached the end zone five times. Kevin Herbst, who started the last three games of 2013, comes into preseason camp as the backup. As a true freshman, he passed for 243 yards and four scores on 10-of-21 passing with three interceptions. He also gained 77 yards on the ground and rushed for a touchdown. While the offense returns seven starters from last year’s team, the team will look to gain experience quickly on the defensive side of the ball. Preseason first team allconference linebacker Michael Gruber will anchor a defense that returns just three starters from a year ago. A senior, Gruber needs just 16 tackles this season to break the alltime Brevard record. His 124 tackles last season stand as the most in Tornados’ history for a

single campaign. He also added a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery to his impressive totals in 2013. “Michael has been an outstanding football player for us since the day he got to campus,” remarked Hamilton. “He’s a just tough, hard-nosed football player.” Gruber’s skill has earned him recognition from multiple national publications. He was named second team allregion and an AllAmerica honorable mention by The Football Gazette last season and garnered preseason AllAmerica honorable mention accolades by the Collegiate Development Football League in 2014. Senior defensive lineman Landon Allen will also be called upon to help lead a position group that will likely serve as a barometer of the team’s success this season. Allen has 98 career tackles, needing just 42 stops to move into the top ten in Brevard history. He is currently 10th all-time with 13 tackles for loss and ninth with five sacks in his career. Last season, he forced two fumbles, the secondhighest total in the conference, and had three sacks that caused a loss of 26 yards. Junior safety Marcus Lunsford, Brevard’s lone returning defensive back,

had 50 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery during his sophomore campaign. After opening the season at Western Carolina and Liberty, the Tornados’ home opener comes against 2013 playoff participant and conference favorite CarsonNewman. Brevard travels to North Greenville in a nonconference tilt, then has a televised Homecoming matchup with a Lenoir-Rhyne squad that made a run to the national title game a year ago in the first of six straight conference games. The Tornados travel to Mars Hill on Oct. 11 before its second televised game in three weeks against Wingate. After a matchup at Catawba, the Tornados wrap up the home portion of the conference schedule with a Nov. 1 tilt against Newberry, which was picked third by the coaches in the conference preseason poll and finished last season with a No. 23 national ranking en route to its secondever Division II playoff appearance. A Thursday night matchup at Tusculum concludes the conference slate before the Tornados return home for a matchup against the College of Faith to close the 2014 campaign.

Tornado Volleyball Team Deep, But Inexperienced By Paul Morgan Special to the Times Second year Brevard College Head Volleyball Coach Kelly Burdeau is a determined, focused, in it to win it type. After enduring a difficult 7-20 first season with only seven or eight starters, and no real bench strength, she did what she had to do, bringing in eleven promising newcomers to bulk up her roster for 2014. “We lost six graduating seniors last spring,” Burdeau said. “Recruiting has been my focus for several months. This fall, will have two juniors, one a transfer, three sophomores

and 11 freshmen. This year’s team will be my first featuring a recruiting class that I am solely responsible for.” Burdeau is also responsible for adding new Assistant Coach, and recent Catawba College graduate, Jordan Raye from Boonville, N.C. “I’ve known Jordan for several years,” Burdeau said. “Her volleyball experience is impeccable. She’s a huge addition to our program. We’re also happy that volunteer Coach Chelsey Pruitt, who was with us last year, is back.” Returning junior Fatima Gharachorloo, from Ontario, Canada,

along with sophomores Savannah Cox from Kannapolis, N.C., Baily Hayes from Phoenix, Ariz. and Aleksandra Vrvilo from Beaverton, Ore. will form the nucleus of this year’s Tornado squad. Junior transfer, and outside hitter, Kindle Kirkham from Sheridan, Wyo. brings added experience. Vrvilo’s impressive numbers paced the Tornados a year ago. She placed in the top ten in the South Atlantic Conference in digs, digs per set and aces. Six of Burdeau’s incoming freshman are from in state. Erin Barr is from Hamptonville,

Hannah Elmore from Salisbury, Taylor VanReenen from Weaverville, Kathryn Beasley from Mount Airy, Maggie Weiss from Clemmons, Rachel Ruble from Advance, and Whitney DeMoss from Candler, N.C. The remaining newcomers are, literally, from all over the map. Kristen Rathbun hails from West Bloomfield, Mich.; Bri Vargas from Maryville, Tenn.; Josie McElroy from Lenoir City, Tenn. and Larissa Franklin from North Pole (yes, North Pole), Alaska. Another change in BC’s volleyball program this fall features the addi-

tion of what is being called a Developmental Squad, which will have its own schedule, with all of the players practicing together. “All players will be double-rostered,” Coach Burdeau explained."Over the years, this might have been called a junior varsity team, but we’ve done away with that title so that players won’t have the expectation of automatically moving up to the varsity.” The Tornado women will play a Blue-White exhibition game in the Boshamer Gym at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, with the public invited. The team has an Aug. 23

scrimmage scheduled at Catawba Valley Community College. BC will open its regular season with a two-day appearance at the Winston-Salem Tournament, playing Paine and Lees McRae Sept. 5 and Emmanuel and WinstonSalem State Sept. 6. “We’re very inexperienced,” Coach Burdeau concluded. “That will be our biggest problem. But, we’ll finally have depth at every position, with players challenging each other for playing time. I’m excited. I can’t wait to see this team evolve and grow.” Paul Morgan is a retired journalist and journalism professor.

The Brevard College Men’s Soccer Team

Men’s Soccer Looking To Improve In 2014 By Randall Stewart BC Sports Information After more than doubling its win total from the previous season in 2013, the Brevard College men’s soccer team will look to continue its improvement and contend for a South Atlantic Conference title in the 2014 campaign. The Tornados had an overall record of 5-11 last season, including a 3-8 mark in conference play, after winning just two games the previous year. In October, a thrilling doubleovertime home win over Tusculum sparked a fivegame span in which the Tornados won three contests, all of which came by a single goal in conference play. Bradley Morrison has taken over the head coaching position after former

coach Juan Mascaro stepped away from his coaching duties to focus on his administrative role as Brevard’s Vice President of Strategic Planning and Athletics. Morrison spent the 2013 season as Brevard’s assistant coach after three years as a graduate assistant at his alma mater of Gardner-Webb. “I’m excited for this season,” said Morrison. “We have a large core of returners in addition to a strong incoming freshmen class. I look forward to seeing each player compete.” The Tornados expect to lean heavily on sophomore Ryan McPhillips in 2014. In his freshman campaign last season, McPhillips rewrote the Brevard record books, setting the singleseason NCAA-era record with six goals scored and accounting for 13 points on the season, just one off of

Brevard’s all-time mark. The Glasgow, Scotland native and all-conference honorable mention forward placed 61.5 percent of his 26 shots on frame and started all but one contest for the Tornados. Sophomore goalkeeper Heath Turner will also be a key contributor in 2014. Turner started 14 contests last season and saw action in 15, logging nearly 1,400 minutes in goal. He made 83 saves on the season, accounting for over 89 percent of the team’s stops, and pitched two shutouts. The Tornados have the benefit of an experienced roster this season. Senior Garrett Stone will anchor the back line, while fellow fourth-year players Augusto Isern and Marcelo Betcer will be called upon to lead the midfielders and forwards, respectively. Lady Tornados Soccer Signs 22 For 2014 Season By Randall Stewart BC Sports Information Head coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara and the Brevard College women’s soccer team enter the 2014 season hungry to improve with a solid core of returners and a number of talented newcomers in this year’s 22member signing class. “I’m absolutely delighted with this year’s recruiting class,” Shinohara remarked. “We hope that the mix of characters and talents that we have will make this the best recruiting class we’ve ever brought in. I also believe that we’ve established great foundations for this program, and I

have strong faith in our upperclassmen to continue building on what they’ve already accomplished. We’re ready to go to the next level and we thank all the supporters of this program. We hope that this will be an amazing year for us.” Lizzie Graham, a senior midfielder, will look to anchor the Tornados’ attack in 2014. She has seen action in 50 games in her career, scoring two goals and placing half of her 46 career shots on frame. Sophomore Kaitlin Burns, last year’s secondleading scorer with three goals, and junior forward Katherine Nickels, who scored twice on the season,

will also be key contributors in attacking roles for Brevard this season. The Tornados will return three defenders from last year’s team. Juniors Alexis Griffis and Currin Sessions will team with senior Althea Dunn to anchor a back line that improved vastly last season, giving up 10 fewer goals than it had during the 2012 campaign. A strong recruiting class will bolster the Tornados at every position. Midfielder Shannon Bava returns to the Tornados as a junior after graduating from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. Bava played in 18 games with 13 starts for

the Tornados as a freshman in 2012. Jocelyn Springer will strengthen a goalkeeper unit left depleted after the graduation of Brittany Webster, who played every minute in goal for the Tornados last season. The midfield will gain a boost from the additions of Anita Maryskova, a native of the Czech Republic who comes to Brevard from Division I California State University Bakersfield, and Estelle Rault, a French student with an extensive club soccer background. Kimiko Nakanishi, who hails from Japan, is a versatile player who can step into a number of roles on the field and is expected to bolster the

Tornados’ attack. Although the team hopes to improve on the field, the Tornados are proud of their work off the field as well. Dunn and Megan Jenkins, a senior midfielder, have both recognized for their stellar work in the classroom, and the leadership of fifth-year senior goalkeeper Bree McMahon will help the large signing class adjust to the rigors of collegiate soccer. “Our main goal for this program is always academics,” said Shinohara. “We have a strong tradition of having a good academic standing, and I believe we have a great system being put into place this year by

[Director of Internal Operations and Academic Services] Jamie Atkinson to help our athletes succeed even more in the classroom. I’ve always been so proud of our girls for being dedicated on and off the field and I admire what they’ve done in their academic work. After an exhibition match with Winthrop, Brevard will open regular season play on Thursday, Sept. 4 against King University in Bristol, Tennessee. The Tornados will play their home opener two days later with a 1 p.m. match against Shorter on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Cross-Country Success May Rest On Women By Paul Morgan Special to the Times Coaching any sport at the NCAA’s Division II level can be a nervewracking business. Money is short, athletes come and go and an injury or two can quickly wreck plans and expectations. No one knows that any better than Brevard College Cross-Country Head Coach Adam Malloy. A year ago, Malloy was preparing for his first season at BC, following a successful two-year stint as head man at Northwestern (La.) State in the Southland Conference. He knew that his strength was on the men’s side of his roster, with four talented seniors set to complete. “Last fall’s team pretty well performed up to my expectations,” Malloy

said. “But, I always think that, with a break here or there, we could have done a little better.” Last October, the BC men finished a strong fourth, missing third place by only three points, among 12 South Atlantic Conference teams in the SAC championships at Black Mountain, N.C. Senior All-SAC runner Josh Mower took fourth in the 8K race, the highest finish for a Tornado athlete in school history. The BC women finished in sixth place. At the season-ending D-II Southeast Regionals in Charlotte, Josh Mower, Eric Gibbs, Jordan Tager and Marc DeLisle led the BC men to a 16th place finish. Angela Canale, Heidi Kaartinen and Madison Smith paced the women, who finished 20th among the 40 or so teams in the region.

But, what a difference a year makes. Seniors Mower, Patrick Helmick, Gibbs and Tager have graduated and moved on. Greenville, S.C. native DeLisle, who was named to the AllSAC Freshman team after a top-20 performance at Black Mountain a year ago, is out of school this semester with academic problems. The bottom line is that Coach Molloy is now looking at almost the opposite situation from the one he faced a year ago. His women’s team looks strong, while, on the men’s side, prospects are not as bright. “ We should be pretty competitive on the women’s side,” Malloy said. “We lost senior Angela Canale, but we have Kaartinen, Smith, China Davis, Ashley

Lowe and Hanna Cook back. Heidi (Kaartinen) should be an all-conference contender.” Also, we’re bringing in two talented new women, Leah Jostes, a Floridian, and Zennah Jepchumba from Kenya in Africa. Both are true freshmen. Seniors Kayce Martin and Shane Shelton will anchor the men’s squad. “That’s a work in progress,” Coach Malloy said. “We’re definitely in a rebuilding phase with the men. “Overall, we have a lot of talent,” Malloy concluded. “If everybody stays healthy, we could have a top ten team in our region this year. But, there are definite question marks. It will be a week to week thing.” Paul Morgan is a retired journalist and journalism professor.

Tornados Welcome Six Talented New Golfers By Paul Morgan Special to the Times

accepted as the home of the game of golf. In actuality, Scots soldiers encountered a game called Chole, played by the French in the early 1400s, took it home and turned it into what has become modern golf. More interesting trivia: Chole also employs a shafted club and a ball and is still played in France and Belgium. And, in an early version of political correctness, golf was greatly discouraged by several early kings of Scotland. The reason? Scotsmen should practice archery and other warlike skills that would better serve the needs of the state.

In the usual coming and going at the end of a small college sports season, three Veteran Brevard Tornados have moved on College Men’s Golf Coach from last year’s team. Coast. The Tornados open play at the Cougar Point Golf Club on Kiawah Island, Sept. 15-16. This tournament, hosted by the University of South Carolina Aiken, is open to the top 25 college teams in the U.S. “This is a great way for us to get cranked up for the fall season,” Coach Nelson said. “It will give us a chance to begin to see how this team will shake out.”

BC’s schedule also includes two local tournaments. The Tornados will co-host, with Lincoln Memorial University, the Etowah Intercollegiate at the nearby Etowah Golf Club Sept. 22-23. Nov. 1-2, BC will play in the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Sapphire Valley Country Club. Western Carolina is the host for that tournament. Coach Nelson said,

“We’re very young, five sophomores and six freshmen, but I’m always excited at this time of the year. You never know who might turn out to be a great player. Even though the new guys bring great credentials with them, the adjustment to U.S. golf courses can be difficult. I’m anxious to see how this team pans out.” Paul Morgan is a retired Journalist and journalism professor.
