Modern Woodmen of America members in Rowley & Georgetown will sponsor a fundraiser on July 26th from 10am-5pm to benefit Georgetown Middle/High School Varsity Cheerleading. Plans for the fundraiser include: face painting during the Newburyport Yankee Homecoming - Olde Fashioned Sunday, Bartlett Mall, Newburyport MA. The money raised will be matched by Modern Woodmen’s home office, up to $2,500, through the fraternal benefit society’s Matching Fund Program and will be used for uniforms & equipment. students the skill of sewing on a button, Shields didn’t need much help beyond threading the unfamiliar sewing machine. But if she had needed advice, and some seniors who came to the class did, she could have turned to one of the most accomplished and experienced seamstresses – Newburyport resident Susan Sophia-McIntyre. McIntyre, who learned to sew as a child, volunteers her time on Mondays at the senior center to teach and work with seniors who want to sew. Some are beginners, looking to learn. Others, like Karen DePhillipo, are experienced, but have not sewn in years. Still others, including Sophia-McIntyre herself, simply enjoy sewing in the company of others who sew. “I don’t have any friends my age who sew,” Sophia-McIntyre said. Assistant Council on Aging director Doreen Brothers said she was thrilled to have SophiaMcIntyre teaching a class on sewing. “It is a skill that should not be lost,” she said. A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art, Sophia-McIntyre is an artist with a sewing

machine. She went to work out of college designing toy catalogs for Hasbro/Playskool Baby, until the company learned that she could sew. She was moved into the division designing plush toys and has become an award-winning patent-holder for some of the more popular plush toys. Besides Hasbro, which still calls on her as a consultant, she has designed and engineered plush toys for Mattel and Children’s Television Workshop. She also excels in designing juvenile furniture and accessories. She has been featured on magazine covers, has been listed in the Top 100 Best in Parents Magazine in 2004 and is a Platinum Oppenheim Award recipient. One day, Council on Aging director Annmary Connor received a call from SophiaMcIntyre asking if she could teach a sewing class to seniors. “Of course, I told her yes. It is a great class for our seniors,” Connor said. DePhillipo came to the class, saying “I am glad I am getting back to sewing.” She used to make clothes for herself. Now she notices there are a lot of little projects around the house that

need more than hand stitching. As the machines whirled and stitches were being added to colorful fabric, the seniors told stories about successful sewing projects and some that were not so successful. One woman confessed that she tried to make herself a pair of shorts. She meticulously laid out the pattern and sewed the shorts only to have them be too small. She realized that she had made the new shorts out of fabric that did not stretch. Sophia-McIntyre also teaches sewing after school to 10 eight year olds at the Bresnahan Elementary School in Newburyport. She said the students create a sewing project they take home to amaze their parents. Her latest project is designing plush characters for the Green Kids Club, an organization founded by Sylvia Medina that teaches young children the importance of environmental stewardship through picture books. The books stress the need to protect habitats, which sustain ecosystems, animal life and ultimately human life. To join in the sewing fun, stop in the Amesbury Senior Center The on Mondays between 11:30 a.m. And 1 p.m.

west of the city’s visitors center. At the bottom of Green Street, it will serve as a new gateway to the waterfront. “It is a start,” said NRA chairman Tom Salemi last week. Praising Lise Reid, director of the city parks department, and the Department of Public Works for helping build the new area, he described it as an experiment to determine how people will use it. The NRA plans to schedule the area for art shows and other exhibits. Pop up parks are springing to life in cities across the country and around the world. Whether they cater to teenagers in need of positive activities, promoting art, shopping or just providing a place to relax, pop up parks turn underutilized street spaces into areas that encourage children and adults to spend more time being playful, creative and active outside of the home. Salemi called the new area an “incremental” improvement, as opposed to a grand plan for developing the waterfront. The NRA has offered major development plans in the past. “None worked,” he said. The most recent grand NRA plan for the waterfront called for erecting three mixed-use buildings with 70,000 square feet on two and three stories. The buildings would

have had restaurants and shops on the ground floor and residences on the upper floor. That plan, like others that preceded it over the years, ran into strong opposition and spawned a new group, called the Committee for an Open Waterfront (COW). Some COW members have opposed the pop-up park, calling it “a diversion.” Maintaining that the NRA is no longer needed, COW has called on the agency to vote to dissolve itself as allowed under state law. Three city councilors have also proposed that the NRA vote to dissolve itself and give its land to the city. The NRA land might then be transferred to the Waterfront Trust, which maintains its own acreage on the waterfront. That proposal, authored by Councilors Robert Cronin, Larry Giunta and Ari Herzog, stated: “The Newburyport City Council humbly requests the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority vote on dissolving; and further, that a document be created to convey NRA land to the city until a new parking garage is constructed, at which point the land be further conveyed to the Newburyport Waterfront Trust.” The NRA can disband itself, but the city council cannot because it was created by state law. Established in 1960, the NRA revitalized the

OLDE FASHIONED SUNDAY The YHC Board of Directors made the decision to cancel the annual muster that occurs on Olde Fashioned Sunday. Over the years there have been several instances of unacceptable behavior that is not representative of the Family Friendly atmosphere that is prominent with Olde Fashioned Sunday. This decision was not taken lightly especially due to this events long history with YHC. However no matter how unfortunate, it is imperative of the committee to look out for the safety and best interest of the festivals volunteers and spectators. It is safe to say that the behavior of a few have resulted in an unfortunate loss for all the people that support YHC and this particular part of the event. It is also noteworthy that this behavior of a few is not representative of the organizations themselves. YHC strives to provide “something for everyone” and will continue to make adjustments to make certain it is a safe and fun environment. Members of the organizations have reached out to YHC and we will be sitting down to see what can be done for the future. This years Olde Fashioned Sunday promises to be a lively day packed with music, events, Shirley’s General Store, and much more! A variety of food vendors will be on the Barlet Mall to satisfy everyone’s tastes. Please stop by the Yankee Homecoming Food Booth and give us your support by enjoying a hot dog. There are many ways to avoid becoming a victim of these menacing threats to our homes and lives. Here are some tips from the FBI, The Home Safety Council and this REALTOR that may serve to keep your homes secure while you enjoy much deserved time away: 1. general population, however, has made me more cognizant of hand cleansing. Hospitals, which apparently have around a 45% handwashing compliance rate, cause approximately 2 million people to acquire an infection in hospitals every year. About half of those people die. Many hospitals have resorted to high-tech ways of ensuring that staff members follow infection-control procedures. You don’t have to work in a hospital setting or have a compulsive disorder to practice good hand hygiene. Here are a few helpful reminders. The first is to utilize more hand sanitizer. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is the best. The more 9’s there are the better. 99.99% is better than 99%. Another important obvious reminder is to keep fingernails clean. The number one place for bacteria to gather and hide is under fingernails. Soap and water or hand sanitizer should be worked in under clean nail beds. Another obvious reminder, and one I constantly remind my teenagers of, is to clean hands well before eating. If visible soil is on the hands, use warm soap and water vigorously for at least 20 seconds. If the hands are “relatively” clean, hand sanitizer is acceptable. It is important to not only do it but to

do it correctly. Remember to use lotion if your hands are dry. Bacteria love cracks in hands and are difficult to kill. Keeping your hands moisturized and smooth, especially in the winter, is important. If you wear rings they should be removed daily. Your hands should be cleaned with your rings off, usually at the end of the day. Lastly, pay more attention to where you put your hands. Putting “dirty” fingers near your eyes, near or in your mouth, or up your nose, is a very easy way to transfer germs to yourself and make you sick. If you’ve been out and touch a bunch of door handles, clean your hands prior to putting them close to your face. If we meet, I’ll probably extend my hand to greet you. I’ll certainly shake your hand if you extend yours to greet me. Be assured though, if a sink isn’t available, I’ll pull my pocket sized hand sanitizer out as soon as we part.
