PLUM ISLAND – The iconic Plum Island Grille is for sale. Co-owners Mark Friery and Francis Broadbery confirmed last week that they are selling their landmark restaurant and Sunset Bar, which greets travelers crossing the bridge onto the island. With a funky atmosphere of local art, driftwood sculptures and flowering window boxes the grille may be best known for its panoramic views of the marsh. “Every night, when the sun goes down, we ring a bell and people crowd the front deck, cocktails in hand, to watch the show,” Friery said, “I’ve been here 18 years and it still astounds me. I hope the next owners love the place as much as we do.” Friery wants to focus his attention on the Chestnut Innovation Center in Amesbury, which helps young companies grow. Broadbery is ready to travel the world, learning all he

can about food. “I moved to the island because I found it irresistible,” said Friery, a refugee from big city life, who bought the property at the entrance to the island in 1996. The attorney turned entrepreneur acquired the property at the corner of Sunset Blvd., reoriented the building toward the west facing the marsh and opened a California-style fresh fish restaurant, that “simply didn’t exist in Newburyport at the time.” The 11-mile long barrier island, five minutes from downtown Newburyport, has long attracted those seeking sandy beaches, great views and a tranquil environment. “Native American tribes considered this a place of healing,” Friery said. “I think that’s why so many people are drawn here.” Friery teamed up with Broadbery, an award-winning chef, to make the food the grille served as great Continued on page 3

ROWLEY — Described by MaryAnn Levasseur as “a night to fix things,” Town Meeting here was a surprisingly peaceful event last week as about 200 community leaders voted unanimously for two major projects. Approved unanimously were articles to spend $11.7 million to construct a new public safety building on the site of the current police station and $800,000 for a feasibility study to update the aging Pine Grove School so it can provide its students a 21st Century educational environment. The proposed public safety building will be a new fire house to replace the existing one, built in the 1880s, and a new police station to provide space for a growing police force. Both measures must now be approved by the voters as a debt override provision at the annual town election this Tuesday. Town Meeting

authorized the expenditures, but the town cannot borrow the funds unless the voters agree to allow it to raise raise property taxes more than 2 percent. The funds for the study of Pine Grove School, built originally in 1954, were approved without debate. In a video on the town’s web site, principal Christine Kneeland said, “A renovated building that supports 21st century learning will ensure that Pine Grove School will continue to be the heart of the Rowley community for several decades to come.” Once the feasibility study is concluded, the cost of doing the renovations will be shared on a 52/48 percent breakdown between the town and the state. The school, which educates 500 students from kindergarten to sixth grade, faces numerous challenges Continued on page 3

Newburyport Literary Celebration Community Announcements

Dear Editor,

For the past 11 years, on the last weekend Connections of April, the Newburyport Community Literary Festival celebrates readers, writers/authors, and books. This a past weekend we held our festival—and what a celebration it was! Beginning on Friday afternoon with Senator George Mitchell in conversation with Dyke Hendrickson, followed by Daniel Mark Epstein speaking with Carl Little about one of this year’s honorees, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and then continuing on through the day Saturday, festival goers were treated to every manner of fiction, non-fiction, • poetry, and books for children and young adults. From poetry to local history, from worm farms to horses, from diversity to the importance of literary fiction, folks were talking books all around the town. • • And the festival finale was a celebration of Newburyport High School English teacher and poetry evangelist, Debbie Szabo, with her students, friends, and family. If you were able to attend some of the events, we hope you left edified and, at the end of the day, had a bag of newly signed books to read! As with most successes, the festival requires a healthy bank account and many dedicated volunteers. Beginning with generous donations by our led by founding sponsor the Newburyport Savings Bank, followed by founding sponsor, the Institution for Savings, various foundations, including the Small Foundation, the Mass Cultural Council, Local Cultural Councils of Amesbury, Georgetown, Newbury, Newburyport, and West Newbury. In addition many individuals give generously to the festival. All of us involved in putting the festival together are volunteers and there are many, many tasks. From fund-raising to securing authors, from scheduling to marketing, from operations to overseeing volunteer/volunteer training. Each venue has volunteers who are there to make certain the event goes smoothly. We couldn’t do it without them. It is to all our funders, all our volunteers, and to all those who were able to join us this year that we want to express our gratitude. It wouldn’t be a party, if no one came. And, thousands did.

from an aging heating and cooling system to out-of-date electrical system. A renovated building will offer flexible classrooms, more efficient lighting and heating and cooling systems, Kneeland said. Selectman David Petersen estimated that the average homeowner would see a $25 a year increase in property taxes to pay for the study. There was a smattering of opposition to spending the $11.7 million for the public safety building, not because it is not needed, but the price tag is so large. A young resident who has lived in Rowley for five years said his family loves the town, but may have to leave if taxes keep rising. Selectman Robert Snow described Rowley as “a lean and mean town. We are really frugal. But sometimes you have to spend a dollar.” Petersen said that this was the third time the town has proposed building a new public safety building. And since it was first proposed in 1999, the costs have tripled. “I can almost guarantee you that we will be back here next year asking

again,” Petersen said. But instead of $11.7 million, the cost will be $13 or 14 million. In 2004, when the public safety complex would have cost about $6 million, it failed by 118 votes at the town election. A previous attempt in 1999 failed, when the cost would have been $4 million. The police headquarters and fire house will be located at the current police station on Haverhill Street adjacent to Eiras Field. The proposed new public safety complex would cost $4,139,584 for the renovated police station and $6,999,166 for a new fire station. The 20-year debt on the proposed public safety complex would raise property taxes for the owner of an average home in Rowley, valued at $415,000, about $360 more per year. The new design also includes expansion potential for the next 30 years, said fire Chief James Broderick. The plans are to keep using the fire station behind the Rowley Pharmacy so as not to reduce response times to fires and emergencies that occur downtown, the selectmen said. Out of about 50 articles, two that drew the most opposition

as its location. The Irish-born Broadbery created an eclectic bistro-style menu and fine-tuned the service. He also brought his passion for uncomplicated, fresh, local ingredients to the kitchen and his Irish personality to charm the customers. Friery and Broadbery added cedar shingles, winterized the Sunset Bar, installed two gas fireplaces and expanded the deck overlooking the marsh. They opened up the kitchen so diners could watch the chefs cook. As lines formed out the door and diners gathered to watch the sunset, the grille began to rake in awards as one of the top North Shore restaurants. It was named “Hot Spot on the North Shore” by Billy Costa’s TV Diner, awarded YANKEE magazine’s prestigious Editors’ Choice honor, Trip Advisor’s Certificates of Excellence and Open Table’s Diners’ Choice Award for Best Scenic View. It has also been featured in The Boston Globe, WCVB TV’s Chronicle, WMUR TV’s Cooks Corner, North Shore, Portsmouth and Accent magazines. Both owners are looking forward to the next chapter in their lives. Friery and partners Roger Foster and Robert O’Brien in the Chestnut Innovation Center are providing

operational space for up and coming manufacturing companies in a converted Amesbury mill. “It will be good to have only one job in my retirement,” Friery joked. Like many great chefs before him, Broadbery plans to take a sabbatical and explore food through travel. “I began my training under the tutelage of an 80-year-old Thai chef, Anna. She was the first Thai chef in Ireland and everything about the cuisine blew my mind. It made me want to be a chef. Since then I’ve worked in a lot of kitchens, but there is still a world of flavors out there I want explore.” Friery declined to say how much money it will take to buy the grille, but is confident that there is someone who loves the island as much as he does and who has the passion for keeping the Plum Island Grille operating for generations to come. In the meantime, don’t expect to see a For Sale sign on the restaurant. Friery pledged to old and new customers that the food and drink will be just as good and the sunsets will be as spectacular as ever while they talk with potential new owners. Plum Island Grille offers casual dining year round. For hours and reservations visit www. plumislandgrille.com.

were fixing a major condensation problem and improving the access road to the new water treatment plant. Compared to the articles discussed above, these were chump change. The gas-fired dehumidification system at the water treatment plant will cost the water board $375,000. Grading the road so delivery trucks can get to the plant will cost $42,000. The dehumidification system was sharply criticized by several residents who called the construction team and water board incompetent for not anticipating that the plant would have major condensation when it drew cooler water from the ground during the warm months. The critics proposed that the pipes in the plant be better insulated and drains be installed to draw away the water. Water Commission Chairman John Manning said insulation would not fix the problem and there are already drains in the building. “There is water all over the place,” Manning said. The measures were approved, including the dehumidification system, which required a two-thirds vote.

The Brief History of Toothpaste

By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD

Just a brief follow-up to last week’s mention of the electric powered toothbrush: The rechargeable batteries do not last forever. I have been nursing my electric toothbrush along for a few months, keeping it plugged in more, etc. However, this past week I switched over to a new one. It is amazing how easy we can get used to things that don’t work properly. The difference was night and day. So, the final thought on electric toothbrushes: If you notice a difference in the behavior of your powered toothbrush, it is time to consider getting a new one‌and change your brush heads every 2-3 months. The concept of toothpaste and mouth washes is pretty old - almost as old as the Egyptian toothbrush. In fact, the earliest known toothpaste was created by the Egyptians. It was said to contain rock salt, mint, dried iris flowers and 20 grains of pepper, all crushed and mixed together to form a powder. It wasn’t until the 18th Century that the next recorded version of toothpaste showed up. That recipe was interesting as well.

The 19th Century saw a lot of toothpaste innovations, although many of them would be repulsive compared to what we are used to today. Charcoal, for example, was popular. Most of the toothpastes of this time were powders that became a paste when introduced to saliva. A lot of these different toothpastes were designed to both clean teeth and give the user better breath. It wasn’t until the 1900’s that toothpastes evolved into what we know now. Toothpaste companies were born and worked to design toothpastes that tasted better while cleaning the teeth and not causing gums to bleed. Many ingredients now show up in toothpastes, with fluoride being one of the most common. There are a wide variety of “herbal toothpastes as well, which don’t contain any fluoride. The variety of toothpastes available is designed to fit the needs and wants of every type of person out there. This high level of choice is the modern age’s primary contribution to toothpastes. So, where does toothpaste go from here? Research continues to develop different ingredients that will benefit different problems. There is anti-bacterial, antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant and every other “anti being looked at to come up with the best new thing. However, there is nothing wrong

Natural products such as (Rte 1) Newbury 978-465-7772 green tea are getting increasing www.consiglistonecreations.com attention in scientific literature. Some believe green tea should be added to dentifrices as an active ingredient for managing periodontal disease. There will always be something new coming out to sell to us. Based on the history of toothpaste, I don’t expect anything revolutionary any time soon. For most patients who ask what kind of toothpaste they should use, my answer is that it doesn’t matter. I usually steer patients away from “whiteningâ€? toothpastes because they are too 978-948-8696 • www.thetowncommon.com • advertise@thetowncommo abrasive. There are better ways brighten teeth. If a patient has a medical condition that makes them more prone to decay, or if compensation is needed because of less than stellar diet or homecare, then toothpastes with added ingredients may be useful. Senior Scene Read the Label

Acetaminophen, a commonly used over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, has been shown in research trials to reduce the ability to spot errors. That can be serious, depending on what the user is doing while taking the drug. In double-blind clinical trials, those taking acetaminophen didn’t notice any difference in their ability to see errors, but the test results told a different story: There really were slower reactions and mistakes. (The participants’ task was to hit one of two buttons when certain

letters appeared on a screen.) Acetaminophen is an active ingredient in hundreds of overthe-counter and prescription medicines. If you take a pain reliever, be sure to read the package label to see if it contains acetaminophen, especially if you have liver problems. In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about acetaminophen causing serious skin diseases, including rash and blisters. In 2015, the FDA amended the required warning on packages to expand on the possibility of liver damage. One consumer product that contains acetaminophen goes much farther in its label warning and says not to take

it with other drugs, limit use of caffeine, avoid alcohol, and more. This should be a warning to all of us. Just because something is available over the counter doesn’t mean it’s safe in all situations. And even if we’ve taken a drug for a long time without harm, we need to start reading labels every time because the information in them might have changed. To keep up with new information from the FDA, have updates sent to you by email. Go online to fda.gov and put Get Email Updates in the search box. Choose your preferred topics and fill in your email address. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
