Senior Angelo Bianchi Speaks on Finding Himself Throughout High School

“

Freshman year for me was a complete 180 of who I am today. I was more to myself, and I wouldn’t open up to anyone because I couldn’t allow myself to be vulnerable to another person. I was just nice, not showing true emotions or feelings in any instance. I was afraid of all the stories I had heard about nasty high school kids that endlessly judge others, so I decided to not give them anything to judge. I chose to be less of myself because I, like many other incoming freshmen, was worried of what people in this new environment would think of me, or how this new place wouldn’t accept me. I shut down parts of myself that make me who I am today.

Thankfully, I learned a valuable lesson at the end of that year, which was to be honest with not only myself, but with those around me.

Now, I am no longer closed off and just ‘nice’, but I am honest, compassionate, and more confident in my daily life. This showcases more of who I truly am, rather than who I wanted people to see me as. I was ashamed for so long. I could not be more appreciative of who I am now, and how I can show my true colors without fear or worry of what people think. I am myself for me, and no one else. Nowadays I can be vulnerable, while my 14-year-old self could not say the same. After I realized that I wasn’t being open about my life, it

was a steady progression to where I am today. Accepting myself wasn’t an overnight switch, but when it finally happened, I could not have been happier.

One of my personal characteristics that has evolved throughout the years has to be my confidence. I used to be extremely insecure of every single move I made. I was even insecure of how I spoke. With my newfound confidence, I dress in the way I want.

I wear bright and bold colors with more stylistic flair. I speak my mind.

I participated in the March For Our Lives in Houston and the National School Walkout because I wanted my voice to be heard despite all the hate surrounding the causes I believed in.

I also became vegetarian because I hated the idea of hurting and killing another creature. I am finally able to do what makes me happy, love who I want to love, not who society tells me to love, and participate in what I want to participate in. I went to the pride festival over the summer because I was ready to celebrate who I was with a community I knew would accept me. I can finally be who I want to be and not have any qualms about it.

I had always wanted to branch out and be more free from judgement, but not everyone saw it from my point of view. I tend to put a lot of trust in those I’m around most, so when the time came to be out and proud of who I was, it was their words of worry that

made me retreat into my shell and not be who I really was. They told me that I should just act ‘normal’ and that there is no need to stand out, but what they didn’t understand is that I didn’t want to be myself to ‘stand out’ but I wanted to do so because that is what would make me happy.

I was terrified of them commenting on a mannerism and making me feel even worse about myself because for a while it felt like that was their main prerogative even though I know now that it wasn’t the case. My mother was extremely traditional and grew up in her parents household that would never tolerate anything that wasn’t masculine so when I wasn’t the macho man I was expected to be, it was a shock. With my father it was a matter of not understanding, so it took a long time for him to come to terms with it as well. Normally, if a random student or stranger were to say these things to me I wouldn’t give it the time of day, but since it came from those who I thought I could trust, most of it truly did affect me and my actions for a long time. But I finally had enough, and I chose to be whoever I wanted despite their words and try to make me happy, not them.

Because at the end of the day, I was trying so hard to make everybody else happy and proud that it just hurt me over time, and I realized that. That’s when I finally felt like I was able to be myself and not whoever it was they wanted me to be.”

Senior Hannah Barnes Expresses Herself Through Fashion STORY BY AYESHA NAGARIA :: co-editor in chief

O

ne of the most noticeable things about a person is their sense of style. This is especially notable about senior Hannah Barnes, whose eyecatching bright pink hair and unique clothing stand out among the dull halls.

“Ever since I was little, fashion has always been my thing,” Barnes said.

“I’ve always enjoyed putting pieces together and trying out different styles.

It’s a way for me to be creative and put my personality on display. What I wear usually corresponds with my mood that day. It makes me feel super confident when I wear something I put together.”

While many may be intimidated by wearing some of the pieces Barnes pulls off, her refreshing take on clothing is something we could all adopt.

“When I wear something that’s seen as unusual I usually think to myself, ‘why wouldn’t I want to stick out,’” Barnes said. “I think conformity is something people stick to when they’re too scared to be or do something different. I find myself the most comfortable and confident when I wear something seen as unusual.”

Barnes’ fashion inspiration comes from a unique place, unlike the average trends.

“I grew up watching anime, obsessed with all things from Japan,” Barnes said. “‘90s female anime protagonists really had this certain flair and style to them that really resonated with me: girly but with some darker, more gothic elements.”

The introduction to anime sparked an interest in Japanese fashion and culture in general, an avenue Barnes explored often while being homeschooled earlier in life.

“I remember being little, maybe four or five, and going on my parents’ big computer in our old living room and discovering different Japanese sites and shops just by searching for hours,” Barnes said. “The bright colors and the unique designs that come from

there are what really attracted me.

Trends over there really do influence a lot of music, movies, and just media in general.”

Her obsession translated itself into her style once she discovered Harajuku fashion, a type of Japanese street style that is characterized by a movement against strict societal rules and the pressure to fit the norm.

“When I was about 10 or 11, I remember going on Tumblr and looking for hours on different Japanese fashion archive blogs and discovering my favorite publication of all time, FRUiTS Magazine,” Barnes said. “That was the first thing that really kickstarted the way I dress. That magazine made me appreciate Japanese fashion even more than I did before. I even have my own FRUiTS lookbook at home.”

However, Japanese fashion isn’t the only thing that defines Barnes’ wardrobe.

“I would say I combine elements of Lolita fashion along with an 80s gothic look, essentially cutesy goth,” Barnes said. “My style really hasn’t changed too much from freshman year, but I’ve certainly gone through a lot of phases.

But by far, my style senior year has been my favorite.”

Barnes’ interest in Japanese culture runs so deep that she will be taking a trip to the country this summer to experience more of the culture first hand.

“This trip has been my dream since I was really little,” Barnes said.

“My parents always promised that once I graduate they’ll take me to Japan. It’s not exactly fashion-related, but I will definitely be taking notes and lots of pictures. It’s a trip of a lifetime, and I’m so excited.”

Barnes hopes to continue her passion throughout college and in her career, where she will study journalism and fashion.

“My dream is to work for an indie fashion magazine, so I can write and do fashion photography,” Barnes said.

Senior Genevie Alphonso Expresses Herself Through Music and Dance STORY BY ZOE MAY :: marketing manager

“

There was always music playing in our house, and my parents said whenever they played music or sang to me I would kick in the womb,” senior Genevie Alphonso said. “I sang with my dad around the house and danced with the dancers we watched on TV. The first time I danced on a stage, I was four years old.”

Ever since Alphonso was a child, her life has been greatly influenced by music. A major aspect of that influence stems from her family.

“My parents never had any professional training, but instead, learned from watching others and became self taught ballroom dancers,” Alphonso said. “They taught my sisters and I in the living room. As a fouryear-old girl, I looked up to my oldest sister and wanted to be just like her — she took dance classes and would

Things changed when Alphonso’s family packed up and moved from Qatar to the United States for her dad’s job.

“After moving to America, I joined a Bollywood-Fusion Indian dance company called Rhythm India in fourth grade,” Alphonso said. “I admired Ms. Arzan, my teacher and director of seven years, greatly and had so much fun growing as a dancer under her.

Around seventh grade, I first started learning about hip hop through YouTube and immediately fell in love with multiple LA dancers like Delaney Glazer, Bailey Sok, Ysabelle Capitulé, Toby Deeran, and Julian DeGuzman.”

It was through her Youtube adventures Alphonso found SoReal, a dance studio based in Houston, and began taking classes there in June of 2019.

“Everytime I walk into the studio, I get inspired to learn, push harder, and grow to become a better dancer,” Alphonso said. “There are so many talented people in one place that it’s easy to get lost and feel discouraged.”

Despite her love and determination, Alphonso often faces challenges in her dance career, but through hard work and belief in herself she overcomes those struggles.

“I feel as if dance was what I was born to do, but it took me a really long time to be able to control my movement and make it look clean,” Alphonso said.

“It is still a continuous struggle for me because I never got any classical training — in Indian or western styles — which is used a lot in most dance forms. I’m also still fairly new to hip hop, and I’m still exploring my body and trying to expand my movement especially when there are people who are younger than me who can.”

Not only does Alphonso spend her time expressing herself through dance, but she also sings.

elementary school, but every year brings something new to the table, and it’s really cool to see how each director teaches the kids and how they interpret the music,” Alphonso said.

While dance helps Alphonso stay fit, singing comes with its own workout.

“Choir is way more challenging and physical than most people think: constantly thinking about how you’re standing, your breath support, how much tension you have in your jaw, and where to place your sound — it’s pretty mentally exhausting at times,” Alphonso said. “I really enjoyed Chorale this year because there are guys and girls in our choir, which means we get to make really interesting music because of the wide range of voices we have. Mr. Jordan is also such a fun director to have because he constantly makes us laugh with his extreme sarcasm and blunt humor. He’s also great because he always asks us how we interpret the music and how we feel — about the music or just on a regular day — which isn’t common in most directors. I think my favorite part is when we finish learning notes and rhythms and have everything memorized, and we all get attuned with each other and make amazing music.”

Along with the mental exercise, singing brings difficulties on other scales too.

“Singing has been a struggle because I prefer singing for myself or with other people, so it was hard for me to believe in myself and be confident singing alone,” Alphonso said. “There’s also always room to improve and things to learn when it comes to music because there’s so much you can do.”

Alphonso is lucky enough to have a family that supports her on her journey.

“My parents and my sisters love to dance and always come to my shows and support me dancing,” Alphonso said. “However, I’m also the first person in my family to get real training from an early age and join a professional

competitive team. It’s really different from what my parents are used to because when they grew up, dance was something they only enjoyed for fun, but now taking me to class — seeing different styles and how dynamic it is — changed their perspective a lot.”

Alphonso has big plans for her future in music.

“The big dream is moving to Los Angeles to dance professionally and be able to travel and spread my knowledge and love for dance,” Alphonso said. “For now, I will be staying in Houston, so I can continue training with SoReal and go to the University of Houston next semester for Kinesiology and Exercise Science.”

Despite all the struggles, the emotions and experiences Alphonso gets from her artistic endeavors makes it worth it.

“I don’t think I can ever stop dancing and singing,” Alphonso said.

“I’ve always had music with me, and it’s helped me more than people understand. Dancing gives me a chance to express myself without needing to explain myself. It’s so different from anything else I have because just one certain chord or note or beat can make you feel something inside and describe something that’s usually indescribable.

Dancing makes me so genuinely happy inside, especially when I dance with others who understand and can vibe with me. One of my favorite things to do is getting to perform on stage. It feels different, after having to practice the same set for weeks and months on end, to finally perform it under the lights and receive the crowds energy with their clapping and hooting and reacting to all our moves and facials. That’s another reason why I love Bollywood and hip hop so much — people are not afraid to have fun while dancing and cheer you on.

Looking back and seeing how much I’ve grown just in the past eight months, I know that I wouldn’t change it at all,” Alphonso said.

Seniors Gabriel and Sebastian Viecco Discuss College Plans

U 5 YEARS 16 YEARS

nder the strained light of their desk lamp, seniors Gabriel and Sebastian Viecco are hard at work, their pencils scratching against paper as they study together. The intensity of their study sessions has relaxed since they entered their last semester of high school — the last bout of senioritis kicking in — but they still make time to review their work as a team. That’s unlikely to change next year when they enter university.

“I’m going to major in business [at] Texas A&M in the fall,” Sebastian said. “He’s going to A&M too, but for engineering.”

For twins who have spent their entire lives together, it was always the plan to go to the same school. The pair have a close bond and spend a lot of their time side by side, studying for the classes they share and confiding in each other. Yet to them, there couldn’t be two people more different.

“My brother’s more studious than me, I’ll be honest about that,” Sebastian said. “[He] is definitely more introverted than I am, because I do theater and he does more science and math.”

As the pair have navigated high school, there have been ups and downs.

For Sebastian, finding an activity he enjoyed was a struggle until he joined theatre his sophomore year. Gabriel, on the other hand, chose to focus on academics.

“It’s been fun, and I’ve had good experiences, but it’s also been a bit stressful,” Gabriel said. “It’s a lot of the workload and classes and just trying to maintain everything at a high level.”

Their hard work paid off and landed them in A&M’s class of 2024.

Although the adjustment period when moving from high school to college can be rocky, they hope that having each other’s company will ease the shift.

“I think [having a twin] will make it a lot easier because it can be kind of a rough transition, but I already have a piece of home with me,” Gabriel said.

“It will be a homier environment than I think most people have.”

Their respective interests might bring them down two different paths eventually, but for now, the Vieccos can enjoy each other’s companionship.

Seniors Share Their Experience Performing Their Final High School Show STORY BY JACOB AROMY :: sports manager

A

fter four years of high school theatre productions, it’s time that seniors of Studio VII say goodbye to the company they have performed with for so long by putting on two final productions, “I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change” by Joe DiPietro and “Fox on the Fareway” by Ken Ludwig.

Whether they decide to continue in theatre or start a different path, these shows will always remain an integral part of their teenage years. Hundreds of hours after school and during

weekends have been dedicated to this part of their life. Unfortunately, these students are not only saying farewell to the productions and stage, but also the company and people around them.

Over the years of musicals and plays, the familial bond formed through theatre may be the hardest thing to walk away from. As senior year finally comes to an end, thespians Brandon Aheimer, Cynthia Cuauro, Brent Eastman, and Zara Hernandez reflect over the time they spent on stage with Studio VII.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT “When it comes to my final Studio VII show, the best part of it all was the actors I was working with. Because the cast for the show was so small, I really got to bond with all of the other actors.

Even though it was sad that ‘Fox on the Fairway’ was my last performance, it was a really great cast and group of people to finish off with. I was really proud of my last performance as Henry Bingham. I believe that the rest of the cast and I put it all out on the stage for one final time, but at the same time, we were all aware that it was the last time walking off of a high school stage. Because of that, you just have to enjoy the moment and make sure to remember it.

Studio VII is not just a place for theatre — it is a community and a family. We spend three hours a day together working our hardest to achieve the same goal; it’s a group effort. I’m going to miss every single person in this company considering how much each person has played an important part of my high school years.”

“When I was a freshman, I always dreamed of being the lead in a show, especially a black box show because of the different atmosphere. When you’re a couple steps away from your audience, the energy in the room radiates off of the people watching and gives you the adrenaline rush that you always get from being on stage, but doubled. So being Louise from ‘The Fox on the Fairway’ made my freshman self so happy, and so very proud. Still, knowing I won’t be able to be a part of another show with my friends, makes the moment bittersweet.

Completing my last show was like my goodbye to theatre in high school.

Louise was a very draining role. Her energy and charisma, along with getting very sick in the middle of preparation for the show, tired me out, to say the least. After the last show recap, as I was completely out of breath and thinking through all my recent struggles, I watched the audience’s standing ovation and their big smiling faces with chuckles in between. At that moment, all my hard work paid off.”

“Theatre for me has never just ended with the show. It has always been an all-year activity. Not having theatre right after school is an unknown concept that I’m not sure I want to give up. Theatre is my happy place.

I’m going to miss having somewhere I belong.

Completing my final show was a surreal experience. I really thought I would be more upset about it all ending, but in reality, it felt right. It felt like it was a good way to close that chapter of my life.

When I stage managed our spring musical last year, ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ my favorite moment was when we first opened the show. All of my nerves and anxiety melted away, and as the show went on, I felt nothing but happiness. I was proud of us and what we were able to put on stage. Every night at the end of the show, everyone in the audience gave us a standing ovation. I can’t explain the feeling, but it took me out of my world. It was truly an amazing experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

“Finishing my final show with Studio VII was bittersweet. I’ve been a part of the company for four years.

It’s so strange to think that was the last one. I’m thankful for all of the memories and experiences I’ve had, but I’m also excited to see all the underclassmen rise into the roles of the seniors after we leave. Walking off the stage that last time was very emotional for me. The finale of the show ended with us saying ‘bye,’ and I couldn’t help but feel like I was saying goodbye to high school theatre itself.

I’m pursuing a BFA in musical theatre, so my training will be spread out among many disciplines including singing, dancing, and acting. I’m looking forward to learning even more about how to combine those three concepts into one.

What I’m going to miss most about high school theatre is the friends I’ve made and my amazing directors. I’ve created a bond with everyone and truly found some of my closest friends in this company. It’ll be weird to be in a brand new place with people I don’t know.”

“My favorite year in high school was my senior year because I grew closer with my now best friends, and I only took five classes. I also got to have an important part in SLHS Press as head photographer this year, although it was probably my most stressful class. Shout out to my yearbook gang for helping me come out of my shell and making me laugh everyday. It was a crazy, fun year. I wouldn’t change anything about it.”

“My favorite year has been my senior year because seniors have a lot of fun activities planned, and I have late arrival. Seniors also have more freedom in school. Senior year has also been academically my easiest year. I’ve also made a ton of new friends and got my life together before college. This year has taught me so much about life, it can be either really good or really bad.

However I hate how this is the end and I will miss all my friends.”

“Junior year was, by far, my favorite year throughout high school. Honestly speaking, the start of high school was pretty rough for me, and everything from social life to grades to motivation was on the decline. Through my AP art history class in my junior year I reconnected with old friends. Also, I was more willing to try new things such as the Student Council, where I met several beautiful people and became more involved with the school.”

“Honestly, my favorite year of high school so far has been my junior year. Academically, it was the most challenging of all four years; however, that challenge made it extraordinarily rewarding whenever I succeeded in my classes. Moreover, junior year provided a lot of personal growth, and I met a lot of good friends. I feel like junior year really helped make me a better person, and because of that, it is my favorite year to look back on.”

“My sophomore year was definitely my favorite year because of how relaxed everyone was about school — no one was worrying about college yet. I felt like I was doing well in all my classes throughout the entire year, so I was able to not stress about school. Thankfully, I got on very well with my teachers. I was lucky enough to have a great group of friends that I spent a lot of time with, going to things like football games and spending time at La Centerra.”

ERIKA MARININ “I think freshman year was probably the best year for me because starting high school for the first time was different and pretty exciting.

Being exposed to a new environment to adapt in forced me to grow and change since then. I didn’t really spend time worrying about much, and surprisingly, I had more money too. After all the work and chaos, I’m literally just exhausted and ready to graduate.”

“Sophomore year is my favorite year out of my highschool experience. We were no longer considered the ‘fish’ of the school while getting used to the workload and the school itself. In my opinion, it was the easiest year and everything was just a breeze, academically and socially. I became close to all my friends that year, I love them so much and I am going to miss them all when we go our separate ways for college.”

AYLINN AVILA “My favorite year out of all the four years would have to be my freshman year. That was the year I joined the softball team and spent the most time with my best friend before she moved away.

I just moved from a different school that year too, and the transition is something I’ll never forget.

All of my classes I thought were easy. Honestly, freshman year overall was just a fun, easy, and great year as most would say otherwise.”

This senior college list is compiled by the Torch staff every year. We recognize that the whole class is not listed, but the list is put together on a self-submission basis, and we have included every submission we recieved.

MR. JACKSON

My dear Graduates, I want to congratulate all of you on your glorious achievement. This is my fourth graduating class here at Seven Lakes High School and I have said goodbye and have shaken the hands of hundreds of graduates, but over all those years, this by far is the most difficult goodbye I have had to say, simply because this is my last graduating class. So I write this farewell with mixed emotions, one a singularly sad feeling knowing it is my last class, and then a gladness of the thought of how blessed I am to have known such remarkably bright and talented people as you (most of you since your freshman year, and some even before that). You have all developed uniquely and at your own pace.

There was no time table, but as you see, you all eventually got there. Your transition from dependence to independence is unfolding, sometimes much to your parents’ chagrin.

But, like them, I am truly proud of you.

Successfully making it through your high school years, and enduring this historic pandemic in your last year, demonstrates that you are truly an amazing group of people. So to you, I say once again I have truly been lucky and blessed to have known you. Good luck in all of your future endeavors.

You will rise above hardships like no one thought possible. And you will excel in areas that will change history. Twenty years from now you will be asked ‘what year did you graduate?’ When you say ‘2020’ that in itself will mean something. Every day interactions with the class of 2020 brought me many smiles, hearty laughter, funny stories, shared joys in your personal accomplishments, and a greater appreciation of having the opportunity to work with and for such a groovy group of seniors. Now and in the future I wish each and every one of you peace, love and happiness always.

None of us ever dreamed that your senior year would end this way. We wanted you to have all of the special events you were counting on, to mark the end of high school and the beginning of a new chapter in your life. I am sorry you did not get them. Your patience is a most admirable trait, and all of you fill my heart with such joy! As you move on to pursue your dreams, I’m sure this year will be more memorable than any of us could have imagined; however, your desire for excellence never ceases to amaze me. I am so honored to have been a part of your senior experience.

This was an ending to your senior year even 20/20 vision couldn’t have seen coming. While I know you will always think of your senior year in Friends terms as “The one where we got robbed of all high school tradition,” I encourage you to think back on it as “The one that made history!” No one else will be able to say they had a finish to their high school career as memorable or epic as yours. As a senior English teacher, it was an absolute honor to spend my time in the classroom, and even “distance learning” with you, the leaders of the school, the uniquely awesome Class of 2020. Go out there and show the world how this has strengthened your character, drive and resilience to whatever will be thrown at you next. Go out there and show the world what legends are made of! Seniors On Majors and Job Aspirations

“Working with animals — I’ve been doing it my whole life. I’ve had horses since I was four years old. I’ve been riding since I was six years old.

We’ve had dogs since I can remember.

I’ve had rabbits, guinea pigs, leopard geckos. I still ride. I’ve traveled nationally for competitions, but sadly, that’s gonna come to an end so I can focus more on getting into vet school.

It’s actually the most competitive field at the moment because there’s only 28 vet schools in the United States.

And it’s one of those things where it’s not about the school — everyone has almost a 4.0 GPA [and] a background in science, but the main thing with vet school is you actually have to have a lot of experience.

I’m in the veterinary medicine program [at Miller]. This is my second year. The first year I was in veterinary applications, and now I’m in veterinary assisting, where I actually go and intern at an offsite veterinary clinic twice a week.

“I’ve been dancing since I was three years old. My mom put me in dance class, and at first it was ballet and I didn’t like it, but then she tried flamenco, and I’ve been doing that.

When I moved to the US, I started dancing jazz and contemporary.

I never knew I was going to move here. In Venezuela, dancing is just a hobby. That’s one of the reasons I was very discouraged pursuing a dance career, because that’s basically a dead career there. But moving here, [there were] so many artistic opportunities not only with dance, and it opened a door for me. Moving from Venezuela was a culture shock because here you don’t see [flamenco dancing] much. I thought there were no flamenco studios here, and I thought, ‘This is the end of it. I’m not goingto dance anymore.’ But then I found one, and that encouraged me to try other [styles].

When I was little, I wanted to become a musical theatre actress, but I can’t sing to save my life, so that discouraged me a little bit. Then, I found out about the dance major.

I’ve been taking dance classes since

animal hospital, whereas some people might be in an equine clinic, and some people might be at a dog shelter. I get to run blood tests, help with doing fecal floats, drop vaccines, and fill prescriptions.

The biggest thing I’ve learned is you’re going to make a lot of mistakes, and it’s just about learning from it.

I’ve grabbed the wrong pill bottle [before]. I definitely didn’t dispense it because I double checked myself, and I had to give it back to the vet. You always have to make sure that you’re double-checking everything, especially if you’re looking for parasites. I would say that the hardest thing is definitely keeping up with the pace, because vets, when they get their flow going, get really fast.

The first couple of days are really hard. Personally, my clinic is very small, so they were actually able to get more help out of me. If you’re an intern, you need to pull your weight, otherwise this ship is going to sink. So, it definitely was a hard [first] week, but I loved it.”

sophomore year. Outside of school, I take dance classes, and I’m part of a dance company.

[I practice around] 10 hours a week. My junior year, I auditioned for the dance company. It was for a music production based on my country, and in October last year, we performed it at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. We were not expecting a lot of people, but once the show started, someone came to us in the dressing room and told us they were packed, and they had never had a show like that. We felt really proud because we worked for almost a year rehearsing, and it was really worth it.

Dance is a risky career because you can go to many different paths, but it just depends on whether you’re successful in them. You can become a backup dancer, you can go on to do musical theatre, or just a dance teacher — it also ties with the business industry and how well you know that. I want to try either musical theatre first or backup dancing of some sort, and when I get older, I would like to get my own studio and build up a career being a studio director.”

PLANS “I love human anatomy, but I also like understanding human psyche, behavior, and why certain cultures have developed, and anthropology is basically a mix of that. It has two branches — one focuses on society and culture, and one focuses on human evolution, so it seemed like the perfect mix between the two.

You can get into medicine [through anthropology]. For medical school, they like seeing a different medical student, and nowadays, they like to see a person who can speak well and who can understand the human mind because that’s very important for a doctor. A lot of doctors are very closed-off now, so they want to promote different, diverse, and open people.

I interned at Houston Methodist last summer, where I got to work at this really cool research and development lab. I got to see doctors-in-training work on surgeries, cutting cadavers open.

I got to move cadavers, which was a horrifying experience — they smell like fresh produce and it’s disgusting. I prepared labs for them, and I got to use something called a DaVinci machine,

which is a microsurgery robot. It can make really delicate, precise cuts, and I got to control that. I learned how to sew a person up, and I got to see a lot of new technologies being introduced.

We never operated on real people, just dead bodies or fake skin. I got to open a pig up, which was really cool.

One of the parts I remember the most is its bladder looked exactly like a waterbed, and it was very weird to see.

The most memorable [lesson] for me is how hard it is to be a doctor. It’s a very cutthroat field, which I knew, but I didn’t get the full grasp of it until I went there. One of my mentors [told me about] how she was a really good medical student, but people would always accuse her of cheating and try to get her in trouble, and unless you had proof that you were trying, you would be accused of cheating and you would get caught. That’s insane.

It also makes me really happy that I have a backup plan — writing — because otherwise, if it didn’t work out, if I wasn’t part of the ten percent of medical students who get into med school, then I have a backup plan.”

“From a young age, I was always interested in robotics. As a little kid, I read a lot of Astro Boy manga and saw a lot of anime with all these robots, and I always thought, ‘wow, that’s kind of interesting!’ A couple years later, once they launched the Curiosity rover in 2012, I thought, ‘that’s the thing that I want to do.’ There’s no limits to what automation can do for our society and for space exploration in the future, and I want to contribute to that in any way possible.

I would like to work for NASA concerning their development of robotics. I have a cousin in Germany who works with artificial intelligence and self-driving cars, and if I find myself in that path in the future, I’ll be more than happy. It’s still kind of out in the open as of right now. A lot of seniors still don’t know what they want to be when they grow up. I know that in college there will be a lot of freedom to choose and explore as well. I do not know [what college I’m going to] yet, but I’ve been accepted in robotics

As of right now, I’m involved heavily with the robotics club. I prototype and develop our robots on behalf of our school, and it will help me in the future because when it comes to technology, you don’t work alone.

There’s a lot of really smart people out there, but if they can’t work in a group, then they’re unable to apply their skills and see past their own perspective to solve a problem.

Two years ago, during my sophomore year, the robotics club worked with the Cinco Ranch robotics team to create a series of broadcasts for a group of underprivileged kids in Onslow, Australia. We taught them how to code and even sent over parts.

That opened my eyes towards the globalization of the world. There’s endless possibilities out there in other parts of the world, and with this college education that I’m going to get, I would like to expand my efforts and perspective.”

The Reality of Sexual Harassment on College Campuses, and How to Prevent it STORY BY JULIANA DOLD :: playlist manager

oing into the first year of college, student expectations are high for new beginnings, experiences, and independence.

Without parents within arm’s reach, it’s important to know how to stay safe in a new environment.

Studies show that the risk of sexual harassment, or unwanted physical or verbal attention that is sexual in nature, is most prevalent throughout the first semester of college. This can vary from verbal commentary, threats to someone’s gender or sexual orientation, or non-consensual physical acts.

It is proven that one in five women, and one in sixteen men experience sexual harassment at least once while in college. These acts are most common on college grounds due to the party culture campuses tend to have. With age, students can begin to fall into a habit of social drinking, which in turn makes them more susceptible to dangerous situations. Additionally, social stress from people encouraging the situation may force a person into an unsafe environment, from which they then will be unable to leave. Victims are also usually too afraid to come forward after being sexually harassed, as it can damage their image and cause conflicts within their social lives. This results in a major drop-off in reports of cases, as only a mere five percent of instances are told to authority figures.

One way to promote safety is to be cautious of the food and drinks available at parties. Commonly, sexual harassment cases involve sedative drugs placed in the victim’s drink to enable short-term memory loss and disrupt common motor functions.

Always be watchful of where drinks have been previously, and do not take a drink from a stranger. If alcohol is provided, be aware of the limit before which drinking can become dangerous.

Alternate between alcoholic beverages and water to keep a steady mind, as well as have fun. Also, attend and leave parties with a group of friends. There is always safety in numbers, and these situations are no exception. Sticking by trusted individuals reduces the possibility of sexual harassment, as cases are more likely to occur when the victim is alone. Being mindful of these practices helps limit the possibility of an incident to occur, and encourages efficient methods of self-safety.

In the case of witnessing or experiencing sexual harassment, there are procedures that must be taken to ensure the physical and mental health of the victim. Firstly, the nearest authority figure must be notified of the incident. On-campus officials are mandated under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to help continue each individual’s education, no matter the disturbance. This requires each campus to have options such as the ability to request a change in class schedules, a change of dorms, or obtain a no-contact order against the perpetrator. Any school that receives federal funding may also provide other forms of support, such as counseling or therapy services. Furthermore, there are an array of options available off-campus: free healthcare check-ups provided by Planned Parenthood are available to both men and women, and reporting any sexual harassment case to a local police station is highly recommended.

The first year of college is an exciting time for any young adult. Enjoy it while it’s in the present, but still be cautious of the surrounding people and environment. Being safe is a necessity, but that doesn’t mean fear has to overrun some of the most memorable years of a person’s life. No matter where life goes, simply remember: have fun, be smart, and be safe.

ou see all kinds of goodbyes, especially in school. The hurried ‘bye’ before racing the tardy bell, the reluctant ‘see you later’ after a long conversation, or a calm ‘goodbye’ after visiting a loved one. Whether you’re wishing someone good luck or simply ending a conversation, parting ways isn’t quite as simple as muttering a few words.

These goodbyes are quick and to-the-point.

A simple wave (or if you’re very close, a hug) should suffice.

For a short break from school, such as spring break, your goodbye can be slightly more meaningful, especially if you don’t plan to see each other during your time off. A longer hug or an ‘I’ll miss you,’ can communicate how you feel.

As tempting as it can be to trash-talk someone you were never close with, it saves you a lot of hassle and regret if you settle for a short, polite goodbye. Consider giving them a small compliment, just for the sake of ending your relationship in a peaceful way. There’s no point attacking someone who might come back (possibly changed) in your future.

Long Term Knowing that you won’t be able to see someone for a long time – or, perhaps, forever – can make your last conversation feel melancholy or formal. However, take the time to appreciate everything they mean to you beforehand. In this busy world, people need occasional reminders that you care, and that they matter, so take a minute to put how you feel into words, so that they will understand how your relationship is left. How can you enjoy your last moments with someone if you don’t even know what to say?

Consider avoiding the word ‘goodbye.’ This pushes the fact that you’re parting ways to the front of their mind, and can make your interaction with them heavy and overly emotional.

Don’t forget to stay in touch! Exchange numbers, follow each other on Instagram, share your Snapchat – anything that gives them a way to continue talking to you, even if it can’t be face-to-face as often. Although you might have to drift apart physically, there’s always a possibility of a long-distance relationship.

Although it might seem old-fashioned, you might want to consider writing them a card; taking the time to write down your thoughts is a lot more meaningful than a quick text message. Besides, that way it serves as a physical reminder they won’t soon forget.

After a Relationship Ending a relationship, whether it’s romantic or simply a friendship, can absolutely suck. You’re likely feeling overwhelmed with disappointment or emotional pain, which is never a good combination. It’s important to remember, however, to focus on you.

What is the right decision for you right now?

Fall back into activities that you enjoy, and allow yourself to feel. You should also take time to digest the situation before thinking it over too deeply.

For some people, relying on friends is an effective way to heal after a split. For others, spending time alone works wonders. Ride it out, and I promise you will be okay.

Goodbyes that might mean you never speak again can definitely be heart-wrenching; try to avoid heavy words such as ‘never,’ or other words that come across as harsh.

Be confident in the fact that you will see each other again, even if it might not be in person for the time being. Poke fun at the situation, if appropriate, and remember that nothing in life lasts forever. There are plenty of virtual ways to continue cultivating a relationship.

Seniors Adapt to Changes in Both School and Life Following the Rapid Spread of a Global Pandemic “Even though I am quite bummed out that senior year feels cut short, I am enjoying it more than I thought I would mainly because I get to spend so much more time with my little sister before I have to leave for college. I have also had much more time to focus on my passion for theatre by conducting Zoom meetings with theatre professors from various universities.

As an Asian myself, I get quite upset when I hear people mention coronavirus as the ‘Chinese virus,’ and I also personally get scared [and] worried for all my relatives and hope that people aren’t treating them immorally. I just wish people were more kind and considerate, but I do feel lucky that I haven’t experienced any xenophobia myself.”

WINNIE NG ZHEN “While being stuck at home, I have been trying to improve on my upper hand serve so that when I can hang out with my friends again, we can go play sand volleyball again, and I can help my team out more. I also have been playing [with] and walking my dog.”

My friends and I decided to take some pictures on the day that was supposed to be our prom just to shed some light on the current situation. Dear COVID-19, In the past few weeks, you have been the biggest news — you are a global pandemic after all. You are a disease that causes respiratory illness with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You are infectious, and there is currently no known cure. You may have started in Wuhan, China, but you spread quickly. Since then, you have infected millions, as there have been nearly 3 million cases worldwide.

You have shut down social gatherings, jobs, and even schools. Everyone has been forced to stay at home and selfquarantine.

As I write this, I’m supposed to be enjoying the last few months of my high school career, but instead, I am bound to the walls of my house all because of you. I don’t speak for all seniors but this was supposed to be our year — our year of Prom, sporting events, cheer competitions, ComedySportz matches, senior trips, club events, Senior Clap Out, graduation, and so much more.

We were supposed to feel every high and every low of the ending to this 12plus year adventure we have been on.

We were supposed to be the captains of our teams, president of our clubs, the leaders of the school, but you took those things away from us.

No senior should ever have to worry about their graduation getting canceled but that is our reality now.

So we deserve to be sad, angry, and confused, but I have learned, and what I am hoping every senior learns by the end of this, is that we are the only ones who can control how we feel about and handle this situation. We have the power. We have the power to make the most out of these unfortunate circumstances.

The Class of 2020 has struggled over the years, but we haven’t let any of that stop us, and we are not going to let anything stop us in the future. Our generation is one of the brightest and most accepting groups of people. We have grown up in the Digital Age, and contrary to popular belief, it has given us the ability to navigate worlds and

understand issues beyond what most people think of. We are racially and ethnically diverse, accepting people in ways some adults still struggle to do.

We courageously put ourselves out there for the world to see and judge. We push boundaries and change the status quo. We are the future.

So once this quarantine is over and you, COVID-19, have passed, us seniors are going to come out of this stronger and better because we are the class that will not let anything stop us from succeeding. If we have to, we will throw our own Prom, go on senior trips without friends around the world, create our own sporting events and ComedySportz matches to play, and maybe even hold our own graduation.

Because this isn’t how we are going to let our senior year end. Our senior year is the beginning of the next stage of our lives, and we are going to start those lives with every intention of being triumphant.

THREE YEARS LATER Letters From the Editors-in-Chief

As a staff writer my sophomore year, I put together my very first issue in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Now, my senior year, my last issue ever is being put together in the midst of a global pandemic.

Yet, no matter the circumstance, the newspaper staff has been there in high spirits, devouring pizza at late nights, rushing to meet deadlines, and most importantly, sharing stories–and I’m so proud to have been a part of it all.

Reflecting over the past three years, I can feel not only how much we’ve grown as a newspaper, but also how much I’ve grown as a person through the newspaper, and how much it has come to define who I am today. I owe everything I am to room 1257. Those issues, my first and last, and every single one in between, have meant the world to me. It may be just a school newspaper, but it’s so much more than that to me.

Putting together this last issue has been bittersweet. I can still remember my first year on staff, being nervous to get my first article written and edited and not knowing at all how to design a layout. I was shy, avoided interviewing at all costs (ironic, from someone so excited to be working on a newspaper), and couldn’t sell an ad to save my life. Never in a million years could I have imagined to be where I am now. Newspaper has allowed me to meet some of my closest and greatest friends, has taken us across the country to Chicago (as a Pacemaker finalist!), and has taught me to think creatively and push myself harder every year. It has taught me that mistakes are inevitable, but when they happen, ‘ctrl z’ will always be an option.

And most of all, it has taught me to trust the process, because even when a challenge seems insurmountable, nothing feels better than finally seeing everything fall into place.

Of course, I couldn’t have done anything without the support of those around me. I would first like to thank Mrs. K, for teaching me everything I know, being my biggest role model, and having faith in me to carry on the leadership position I have now. I would also like to thank Mrs. Reid, for guiding me through my first time as a leader–it has been rough at times but you always provided the best advice and support to carry our newspaper forward. In addition, thank you to Mr. Knobbe for his endless support and for being our best copy editor, to Jaden, for being everything I’m not in terms of personality, knowledge, and math skills, to Zara, for having the same brain as me and knowing when to encourage an idea and when I’m being too much, to Jules for never getting mad at me when I ask her to redo a graphic a thousand times and for introducing me to the Starbucks crispy grilled cheese, and finally to Jacob and Starbucks, for always letting us stay past closing when we’re in the middle of an idea.

And of course, thank you to each and every editor, staff member and photographer–even if I haven’t mentioned you individually our paper could not run without your endless hard work and dedication. I apologize for all my mistakes–I know I’ve had plenty–but thank you for being patient with me through it all. This year has been truly unique from start to finish, but I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished and I’m so excited to see what you come up with next year.

Finally, to the class of 2020, it has been a pleasure to serve you. This senior edition goes out to each and every one of you–to those who were looking forward to spring sports, to prom, and to those last memories with your closest friends. I know this doesn’t make up for all those losses, but by providing you a completed senior edition, I hope we have honored you all in the best way we could. The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here, and although it’s not at all how we expected it, it has been an incredible four years, and nothing can change that fact. Class of 2020, thank you for all that you have done for me, and here’s to the next chapter of our lives.

For me, being a part of the newspaper staff has been an incredible part of my last three years of high school. It gave me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people, and tell their stories along the way. I am incredibly grateful to the rest of my editors and staff for an amazing last year. Even with all the change that we have faced, we were able to work together and I am extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together. From the beginning of the year, you all have worked incredibly hard to create these issues, and have been able to adapt to all the uncertainty we have faced this year.

Your hard work has ultimately led to all of our success, and I couldn’t ask for a better staff to be a part of. Thank you for truly making my last year on newspaper better than I could have ever imagined.

I would like to thank Mrs. K for teaching me everything I know about newspaper, showing me what it’s like to lead the staff, and for giving me the opportunity to lead the staff. Without her, I would not be at the place I am today. I would also like to thank Mrs. Reid who has done an amazing job in her first year. You have always been there for the staff and have been a great advisor. Next, I would like to thank Mr. Knobbe, for putting the time in to review our issues for us. Thank you for feedback and for helping us make the newspaper the best that it could be. Lastly, I would like to thank Ayesha for balancing me out, and knowing when to tell me it’s time to get it done, and Zara for playing cool math games with me, even though you’re a horrible water girl.

To the Class of 2020, I know that the end of this year is not what we envisioned at all. With everything being uncertain, it can be hard to see the good that remains in our lives. But we still have a lot to look forward to in the next chapter of our lives. We’ve spent the last four years wanting them to go by faster, and now that the end is here, we all wish we had a little bit more time together, but no other class can say that they survived what we did, and we’ll be stronger because of it. Thank you for allowing me to tell your stories.
