Unusual Wildlife - The Blue Sea Dragon The blue glaucus is also known as the blue angel, blue dragon and the blue sea slug.

Despite looking so mesmerisingly beautiful, these blue sea slugs actually have quite a sting on them and are a threat to other sea creatures and humans on the rare occasions that they wash up on shore. This blue sea slug belongs to a group of sea slugs known as nudibranchs. They can be found in the tropical waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Growing up to lengths of 3 centimeters long, this slug lives its life floating upsidedown on the surface of the ocean. It does this by swallowing an air bubble and keeping it inside its stomach. The slug’s beautiful colouring and shading is down to a phenomenon known as countershading. This helps it to avoid both flying and swimming preadators whilst floating wherever the wind and current takes it. Its underside, which faces upwards when floating, is blue which helps it to blend in to the water’s surface when seen from above; and its back, which faces downwards, is more of a grey colour which helps it to blend into the ocean when seen from below. The blue underside is also though to reflect harmful UV radiation from the sun. This spectacular creature has another form of defence against its enemies.

It will swallow its prey’s stinging cells without hurting itself and is able to store the poison up within its finger like structures called cerata, which it can then use against its own predators!

There are only 2 species of these blue slug – the Glaucus atlanticus and the glacilla magenta. The glaucus atlanticus can grow up to 3 cm long and has up to 84 cerata. The glaucilla marginata has up to 137 cerata and a longer tail but only reaches up to 12mm in length.

They mainly feed on hydrozoans (also known as sea serpents) but one of the specialities in their diet is the Portugese Man-O-War which is best known for its very painful stings. The stinging cells are eaten by the slugs and passed through to their cerata which will be stored up for defence. They have been seen to eat helpless jellyfish by

snatching their bodies and pulling chunks off of them with their strong jaws and rows of needle sharp teeth. If no venomous creatures are around, they have been known to resort to cannibalism.

Glaucus live a pelagic life which means that they go where the winds and current take them. Because of this lifestyle, it means that they do sometimes wash up on the shore and they can be found on beaches. Despite living a pelagic life, they are able to use their cerata to make slow swimming movements, which they use to move towards prey or mates.

Like many sea slugs, the blue sea slug is a hermaphrodite which is able to lay eggs.

After mating has occurred, egg strings are produced which are laid down on to floating pieces of wood, the remains of any prey or any other object that will stay afloat. This enables the young to stay floating whilst they develop and grow an air sac of their own.

Recipe - Squash and Black Bean Chilli Serves 4 Either stuff a whole squash with the chilli, or dice and roast the squash and add it to the chilli. The latter opens up a whole variety of serving suggestions: eat it with rice or in a baked potato; top it with a dollop of soured cream, some spicy tomato salsa or some guacamole; stuff it in a taco with some grated cheese; or spread it over a tortilla.

• 1 medium butternut, large onion or smallish crown prince squash • 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for roasting • 1 large onion, chopped • 4 celery sticks, finely chopped • 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped • 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped

• 3 large garlic cloves, crushed • 1 - 2 tsp crushed chipotle chillies (or substitute another fresh or dried red chilli) • 1 tsp dried marjoram or handful of fresh oregano • 2 bay leaves • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes

• 2 x 400 cans black beans, rinsed and drained • juice of 1 lime (apporx. 2 tbsp) • small bunch of coriander, finely chopped • salt and black pepper • grated cheese and / or soured cream, to serve (optional)

Heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. If stuffing a whole squash, cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and pulp, and roast each half; or roast in chunks. Heat the oil in a large heavy pan over a medium–high heat. Add the onion and celery. Reduce the heat to medium, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until soft. Add the peppers and continue cooking for a further 10 minutes or so, stirring frequently. Stir in the garlic, and cook for another minute. Add the chilli, 1–2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, the herbs and cumin. Give everything a good mix then add the tomatoes.

Simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes. Stir in the beans and continue to simmer for a further 10 minutes. Remove the bay leaves, stir in the lime juice and coriander and adjust the seasoning to taste. If using roast squash, add it now, heat through, and then serve. If stuffing a whole squash, fill each roasted squash half with the filling mixture. Top with grated cheese or soured cream (or both), if you like.

Welcome To Issue 11 Of The Tonbridge Advertiser!

A very Happy New Year to all of our readers. I do hope that you all had a relaxing Christmas and that you feel refreshed and ready to take on 2018! How many of you have vowed to diet this year and loose weight? I have too! I really did enjoy myself over Christmas and just ate whatever took my fancy. It was wonderful at the time but in the cold, harsh light of the New Year I am most definitely regretting it! I am a much more jiggly version of my former Christmas self! So I am going to try my very best to eat better from now on. I am not going to do any radical dieting (I have a friend who goes on juice diets. It works amazingly for her but I do not have the dedication for that level of dieting - I really enjoy food!) but I’m sure that swapping biscuits for fruit will most definitely help the waist line! And I am hoping that by declaring my intent to loose the extra Christmas layer to all of Tonbridge and Hildenborough, that it will make me stick to it! Watch this space...

Another resolution of mine is to spend more valuable time together with my young family. With the demands of work these days (and I’m sure it is nothing new and has always been the case for families), it is so easy to get so wrapped up with work that you miss out on family time. And I’m not talking about big glamorous events with the family or big expensive holidays abroad. For me and my kids, it is the simple things that mean the most to us and are most memorable. Trips to the park, or riding a bike or spending the day at a sandy beach are all so enjoyable. But with work deadlines and school stress (have you seen how much homework primary school children are given these days?), it can be hard to fit the time in to do these things together. I find events like Christmas have a good habit of marking the passing of time with my children. So it is my New Year’s resolution to spend more simple and free family time together. We live in a great area of the country and there are so many beautiful parks around us to explore, especially in Tonbridge and my new home town of Tunbridge Wells. Compiling the community events each month in The Tonbridge Advertiser and The Sevenoaks Advertiser shows me how much of a local community we have, despite living in towns. There is usually something that can be found to do locally, and a great place to find these events is right here, in The Tonbridge Advertiser. So if you have any community groups that you are part of, or are organising a community event then get in touch with us so that we can let all of the residents of The Tonbridge Advertiser Tonbridge and Hildenborough know about you!
