Carol Burrell

President & CEO, Northeast Georgia Health System

Now that we are all fighting together against COVID-19, it’s hard to believe that the hot topic at last month’s Chamber Board of Directors meeting was E-SPLOST. That’s not to say E-SPLOST isn’t important, because it certainly is, but very few people that day were concerned about the impending pandemic that would rock our nation, state and community. Those who were aware of the virus then knew it by a different name – Coronavirus – and it seemed a world away in China.

Leap forward four weeks, and I bet there’s not a single person in our community who hasn’t been impacted by COVID-19. It’s a difficult time for everyone, and it’s especially tough on businesses. Many are seeing fewer customers or closing their doors temporarily, which means employees are laid off. Some companies that were just starting or already in a difficult position may never open again. There’s no doubt it’s a dark time for our economy. Yet, against all odds, there’s already light shining through the dark. It’s been amazing to see our local business community rally to the aid of those in need. Whether it’s finding ways to pay employees when they aren’t working, arranging free meals for families or donating supplies and innovating ways to create personal protection equipment for our local healthcare community – the generosity goes way beyond dollars and cents. Unprecedented times call for unprecedented actions, and your efforts, our community's efforts have been extraordinary.

But, there’s still a few things we all need to do, together, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. First and foremost – STAY HOME. The importance of isolating and practicing social distancing in your own house can’t be overstated. Only leave the house for essential trips like going to the grocery store, picking up medications or for absolute emergencies. If you do start to feel sick, follow these simple steps: 1) Monitor your symptoms at home. Pay close attention to symptoms like fever, persistent cough, difficulty breathing and bluish lips or face. 2) Call before you come. If you feel you need to leave home for care, call your doctor’s office first to discuss your symptoms and get direction about where to go. If you don’t have a doctor, call an urgent care clinic or find a practice online at ngpg.org. You can also complete an online E-Visit from home by visiting ngpg.org/evisit. 3) Rely on healthcare providers to determine if you need to be tested. Caregivers will evaluate your symptoms and will coordinate testing if needed. Last, but not least, please join me in thanking our local healthcare workers. These brave men and women are on the frontlines of this battle. People ask me what they can do to help our employees at Northeast Georgia Health System in this time of crisis, and the best thing you can do to help is stay home. The sooner we do that as a community, the sooner we can get back to other important issues like E-SPLOST. We have a long road ahead to overcome this pandemic, and we won’t have a quick fix. It will require all of us being diligent and committed to doing the right, yet difficult, things. Thank you, and I hope you all stay safe and healthy.

The Chamber: Your Business Advocate As we all navigate new challenges and obstacles daily, it is important to know that the Greater Hall Chamber is your partner moving through the COVID-19 crisis. The Chamber team is committed to the success of our Brian Rochester community and ensuring Rochester & Associates the conditions for healthy Chairman, Greater Hall commerce. The staff will Chamber of Commerce continue to work diligently to serve our members during this difficult time. It is important that we support our businesses during this time. Our small businesses need your help. Suggestions:

3. Shop Local Online Many Chamber members and local businesses have online stores in addition to their brick-and-mortar locations. Whenever possible, consider giving them your business. We need to support each other! Check the Chamber and Vision 2030's social media posts and websites regularly for updates. These are challenging times, but the Chamber is here as your business resource and advocate. Please reach out at any time with questions, concerns or needs. We are here for you. As we emerge from this challenge, there will likely be economic impacts where our Chamber community can truly have the greatest impact in reviving economic prosperity. Together, we will move forward and weather these uncertain times.

1. Order Takeout or Delivery Your favorite restaurants may have had to shut their doors, but many still offer takeout or delivery. Not only does that keep the business going, it also provides income for delivery drivers. Or, use a resource to have them delivered to you, like Grubhub and DoorDash.

Remember, the great philosopher Winnie-the-Pooh has a few words worthy of sharing that are more relevant now than ever: “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

2. Buy Gift Cards Want to inject some cash into a small business right now? Buy a gift card. Spend $25 on a gift card to use later, when life returns to normal.

please help. stay home.

As our region, state and nation all battle the COVID-19 pandemic, people often ask us what they can do to help. The answer is simple: stay home. We understand you may need to leave to get groceries and medications – or you may have a true emergency or a job that you can’t do from home – and that’s

understandable. Otherwise, staying home is the best way to protect you and your loved ones from this virus. We believe that if everyone in our region will commit to staying home for at least 14 days, it will significantly limit the spread of COVID-19 and save as many lives as possible.

Stay informed. nghs.com/COVID-19

7th Grade Career Path Fair

The Greater Hall Chamber and VISION 2030’s 7th Grade Career Path Fairs, a collaborative initiative with the University of North Georgia Gainesville and Lanier Technical College, provides middle school students with career opportunities in Gainesville and Hall County. Two Career Path Fairs were scheduled in March to include some 1,200 students (7th graders). The March 10th event was a tremendous success, but the March 26th event was cancelled due to COVID19 concerns. Over 50 area companies representing up to 16 career paths impact students on just how interesting their business is! Some high school completed career paths come with certifications and all give the student more employability in an area of their interest. Most students choose what they know – We want them to know local people representing local opportunities in their career path of choice. “Our goal is to inform students of careers that they can build right here at home,” said Bill Hall, Chairman of Education for Vision 2030. “The Career Path Fair gives 7th graders an opportunity for a “light bulb” moment to connect to the career that will inspire them.” Planning and sponsoring organizations included the Hall County School System, Gainesville City School System, Strategies Group, Chick-fil-A, and the Georgia Beverage Association. Details: Elizabeth Higgins, Executive Director, VISION 2030 at ehiggins@ghcc.com

In 2015, the Greater Hall Chamber Economic Development Division founded the Greater Hall Workforce Development Task Force to build a sustainable workforce for the area that possesses the skills needed by today’s (and tomorrow’s) employers. The collaboration with area employers, educators and leaders creates new programs, markets existing programs, removes barriers and influences perceptions. Vision 2030's Education Consortium is a group of representatives from public and private educational organizations and businesses that meet bi-monthly to discuss education and workforce development issues.

Leadership Hall County explored Servant Leadership at the March program. The class visited several of the amazing not for profit organizations that Hall County is fortunate to call home. Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier, Sisu (formerly Challenged Child), Eagle Ranch, Just People Flowery Branch Village and The Georgia Mountain Food Bank (GMFB) provided tours and organization overviews for the class. At GMFB, the class packaged over 5,000 pounds of food for distribution! Non-profit agencies represented by class members this year are: Northeast Georgia Health System, Brenau University, Hispanic Alliance Georgia , Elachee Nature Science Center and Keep Hall Beautiful. Many thanks to Megan Martin, North Georgia Community Foundation, and her son Thomas for presenting lunch and showing the importance of giving back. Thank you to North Georgia Community Foundation for sponsoring a delicious lunch and to Lakeview Academy for providing transportation.

Free Range Art now on display

Each spring, the Vision 2030 Public Art Committee selects four pieces of art from The Quinlan Arts Center, Brenau University and Gainesville Kiwanis Youth Art Contest and awards an artist honorarium. The committee then turns those four award-winning images into 8 ft x 8 ft pieces of Free Range Art for our community to enjoy for years to come. In light of the disruption of this year’s contest due to school closures, Vision 2030 Public Art has selected 10 featured youth created pieces this year! The new 2020 Free Range Art will be available for viewing for one "Beautiful Mess" by Jennifer Quimbayo year in “The Royal (16) Chestatee High School. Space” open-air gallery between Hunt Tower and The Collegiate Grill on the Square in Downtown Gainesville. Our community continues its strong interest in visual art, along with the support of emerging Hall County artistic talent. See all 10 of the youth winning art pieces and learn more about Free Range Art in Gainesville-Hall County "Into the Woods" by Sara Laine (17) at vision2030.com Lakeview Academy.
