PENDLETON — The tricounty special education program that has served local students for more than 40 years will dissolve next year. Area school boards
the South Madison Community School Corp. said services for students will not change for the 2016-17 school year. South Madison administrators sent parents and guardians a letter Monday, April 4, stating when the co-op is officially dissolved on July 1, 2017, the transi-
tion will be smooth and the same quality of services will continue to be provided for local students. The co-op has provided staff, training and other support services to students from area school corporations in Hancock, Madison and more recently, Shelby counties since 1973. This year, it served five school districts and about 2,500 students.

The co-op’s future has been in question since Greenfield-Central officials announced plans to withdraw from the partnership in December 2014, citing a need for more in-house control over staff and programming. The school district launched its own special education program this school year.

ENDLETON — Four months after the man Connie Ake called “my husband, my exhusband and my life love” died unexpectedly at home in Pendleton, she is working to ensure he gets the final resting place she said he deserves. Connie said Ed “Danny” Ake collapsed and died from a massive heart attack Dec. 10 at age 68. Ake, 67, is arranging to have Danny buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, something the two had discussed for some time.
“He was an honorable man and deserves to buried in Arlington where (a) Vietnam memorial is,” she said. Danny served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 28 1966, until Dec. 7, 1967. He was a Specialist 4 with the 2nd Infantry Division Advisory Team. He was trained in communications, but it was for his actions on Aug. 12, 1967, that Danny earned the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action. The Silver Star Award is the third-highest military decoration for valor awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. SEE HONOR, PAGE A7

LAPEL — Lapel Town Council approved increased fines for meter tampering and gave its initial nod to banning tobacco products in local public recreational areas. The council passed the new meter tampering ordinance, which raises fines for tampering with utility meters from $50 to $125 for the first violation and $250 for additional violations, during its April 7 meeting. Councilman Tony Pearson was the lone voice opposing the increase during the first reading at the March 17 meeting and during the final reading Thursday, April 7. Pearson earlier said he didn’t want to increase financial burdens on residents who were facing hard times. The council also gave its initial approval to a tobacco ban in the parks; the ordinance is set for a second reading at the April 21 council meeting. Park Board President Bill Hutton called for the action in March. He said the parks would be using money from a federal grant as development of the new complex on the southwest side of town continues. Part of the requirements for government grants are prohibitions on the use of any tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other smokingor nicotine-related materials, according to Hutton. Track senior is ‘the epitome of hard work’ By ROB HUNT ptnews@ptlpnews.com
LAPEL — Track runners are solo performers, always trying to better their times and set personal records. They are also teammates, working with other runners and athletes to score more points for the team. And some are members of a team within the overall team. Senior Lapel sprinter Tera Addington fits the bill of a good teammate to the letter. Not only does she work extremely hard
to better herself, but she also is there for her fellow Bulldogs and is willing to sacrifice for the good of the team. Her favorite event is the 4x100-meter relay, which set a school record last year and returns intact from last season’s 11th-place finish at regional. Addington is joined by fellow senior Brandi Miller and juniors Samantha Voegele and Tylor Wyant, on a team that needed a little verbal boost prior to last year’s Madison County meet.
“I had to pep them up,” Addington said. “We were nervous because Anderson was a second better than us. So we beat them by four seconds in the county meet.” Addington would like to return to the regional with the 4x100 team as well as run the 100 and 200 events. With that goal in mind, she has been a fixture in the weight room and on the track this offseason. “I started working out in the summer,” she said.
Senior Lapel sprinter Tera Addington starts her favorite event, the 4x100meter relay. The relay team set a school record in 2015 and returns intact from last season’s 11thplace finish at regional.
