While the RM Indoor Track team has been a dominant force in the county and the region for many years, the 2020 season has been one for the books. The team recently finished second at the
Maryland 4A West Regionals and also finished fourth at the MCPS Championships. Along the way, however, many long standing RM records were shattered in everything from the boys distance medley relay to the girls 55 meter run, etching new milestones into the RM record books. First, at the MCPS Invitational on Jan. 11, the boys distance
medley relay (DMR) team took first in the competition and also broke RM’s previous record of 10:44.0 from 2011 with a time of 10:35.95. The team was made up of seniors Avery Azripe, Garrett Suhr and Seydi Sall as well as junior Elias Applebaum. “It feels good to be a part of this team,” Arizpe said. “It means a
AP/IB Art struggles with class numbers by Grace Comer SENIOR ARTS WRITER
In a basement art studio, a small group of AP and IB Arts seniors work diligently to plan the 2020 Senior Art Show. But, recently, there has been stress over more than just coordinating such a major event; some students are concerned that IB Art may soon be a class of the past. According to senior IB Art student Selin Apaydin, some students have dropped the class this year, leaving it with only nine students. Furthermore, Ms. Kelly Posey, the AP and IB Arts teacher, said that there are currently only two students signed up for IB Art for the 2020-2021 school year. Apaydin believes that having

such a small class is actually beneficial to the students. “You’d be able to get a lot more focus from your teacher,” she said. However, some students are worried that administration will fail to see the advantage of a smaller class. “I don’t know if Mr. Monteleone is going to continue to think that we should fund IB Art if there’s so few students in the class,” senior AP Art student Annabelle Sargent said. Ms. Posey added, “I’m worried that maybe interest in IB will dissipate.” Opinions differ on why interest in IB Art appears to be decreasing. Apaydin said, “I think there’s this idea that art is a really stressful class, and you have to do so much for it.” AP/IB ART, cont. page 16

lot that I was able to play a part in making it that way.” With this new record, the team is now ranked 24th in the nation for the DMR. Furthermore, at the VA Showcase on Jan. 19, the Girls 4x200 meter relay team broke the school record of 1:45.20 set in 2007, running a time of 1:45.06. With that time, the team finished 17th
out of 108 teams that day and are now ranked 55th nationally in the 4x200. The team included senior Diamond Alexander, juniors Arabella Eismann and Caia Gelli and sophomore Ayokami Akala. “We are definitely growing and improving together,” Alexander said. TRACK, cont. page 19

The graffiti “AidsBaby” has become a common sight on and around the RM campus. In a practice known as ‘tagging,’ vandals mark public areas with a nickname or phrase—a practice that has skyrocketed in the past two months. From bathroom stalls and walls to the back of street signs, the graffiti has become ubiquitous. Though RM staff and students are currently attempting to find the culprits, the nature of graffiti is such that copycats are often inspired to do the same, making it increasingly difficult to blame this problem on a few individuals. Still, thanks to efforts from
