Letter from the Editor

Welcome to the 2024-2026 biennium! It’s been two years since we launched The Compass in digital form, with our entire membership being able to read the magazine. It’s been a great experience working with this magazine digitally, and I hope that you all enjoy reading our digital magazine.

This issue celebrates National Convention 2024 – our 54th National Convention that took place in Baltimore over the summer. We had great weather, great sisterhood, and great seafood! My favorite part of Convention is seeing all my wonderful sisters and spending as much time as possible with all of them. It was great to sit around and chat at night and pick up exactly where we left off two years ago.

I can’t wait for you to see all of the fun photos from this Convention!

Please continue to email the magazine and share your story ideas or highlight a sister that is doing something amazing at thecompass@thetaphialpha.org!

Happy reading!

MESSAGE FROM our PRESIDENT

As I embark on another term as National President, I am filled with excitement and hope for the future of Theta Phi Alpha. I encourage you to watch the State of the Fraternity presentation from the 2024 National Convention. It provides valuable insights into the progress and challenges of the 2022-2024 biennium and offers a glimpse of what we can expect for the 2024-2026 biennium. Together, we can shape a bright future for our beloved Fraternity.

One of my first Theta Phi Alpha pictures. See the love, happiness, friendship, and belonging? I can still feel it! Alpha Pi Chapter, Wayne State College, 1986.

Theta Phi Alpha’s gavel. A gift from Epsilon chapter (University of Cincinnati) in 1926.

As you read this issue of The Compass, take the time to look at the faces in the pictures. These faces are a sampling of what Theta Phi Alpha is in 2024. How would you describe what you see? Love…happinesses…friendship… belonging? Now find a picture of yourself and other Theta Phi Alphas. What do you see? My guess is, whether the picture is from a week, a year, 10 years, 25 or 50 years ago, you see and feel the same thing that you see in the pictures of this issue of The Compass

As National President, I am entrusted with the gavel to guide the business of the Fraternity. The gavel was a gift to the Fraternity from the Epsilon Chapter (University of Cincinnati) in 1926. This gavel has been a part of our conventions and the discussions and decisions that have occurred for 98 years! At one time, the gavel was shiny and new. Now, it looks like it has seen and experienced much. Although the gavel has evolved in the way it looks, it still represents the life of Theta Phi Alpha and the decisions made by the convention body to ensure the Fraternity is a sustainable, relevant organization for our members. That is what I see as my role as National President – to guide the Grand Council to see the Theta Phi Alpha of the future to ensure that the Fraternity provides a place of love, happiness, friendship, and belonging for our current and future members. Just like what you saw when you looked at your own picture!

Yours in the bonds of sisterhood, National President

QFA 54TH NATIONAL CONVENTION HITS BALTIMORE

Theta Phi Alpha took its 54th National Convention to Baltimore this past July, making this the Fraternity’s first appearance in Maryland’s largest city. The Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor provided beautiful, scenic views of the Inner Harbor, Camden Yards, and the Paptasco River. Attendees enjoyed many outside activities, visiting the Inner Harbor, and of course, spending tons of sisterhood time together.

Photos by Jennifer King and Tyler Hromadka

Convention attendees arriving early were able to visit Oriole Park at Camden Yards to watch the Baltimore Orioles battle the Chicago Cubs. Our Chicago Area sisters were very happy that the Cubs swept the Orioles 4-0! Many other attendees were able to take in the beautiful surroundings and enjoy dinner around the Inner Harbor.

Convention business was once again at the forefront of this National Convention’s agenda. In 2022, attendees spent many hours passing our updated National Constitution and Bylaws. This year, many of our business session agenda items centered around Ritual changes. The Ritual Review Committee spent many hours examining our Ritual to continue our conversations around accessibility and inclusion. The National Constitution and Bylaws Committee

proposed changes surrounding emergency procedures, in the event that Theta Phi Alpha would ever have to postpone Convention again, like we did in 2020.

We also said goodbye to two Grand Council members as they ended their terms: Jessica Holthaus Ballman, E , National Vice President-Collegians, and Ainsley Robson, AT, National Vice President-Alumnae. Thank you for your service to the Fraternity! Please see the New Convention Business update for a recap on presented proposals and elections. To view the State of the Fraternity that was presented, please check out the video here.

The Convention Committee spent many hours looking through all the pieces of

Convention and assessing time, value, and efficiency. Many changes were made to the Convention schedule and procedures this year. There was more free time for exploration or spending time with sisters, the microphones in the business room were strategically placed to reflect your agreement, disagreement, or questions, and finally, there was a dance party after Fraternity Night Banquet!

Some Convention awards were given out pre-Convention in June. It was quite

The motions were all voted on and accepted by the Convention delegation.

Jessica Holthaus Ballman, E , National Vice President-Collegians, and Ainsley Robson, AT, National Vice PresidentAlumnae, ended their terms on Grand Council.

Karen Jenkins Rubican, AΣ , ended her term on the Board of Trustees.

Dionne Myers Tuplin, AE , Patricia Wright Seashore, AN, and Lauren Svec Gallo, BB, were elected to the Board of Trustees.

Congratulations to all those elected or appointed to National Officer positions during this National Convention! 7

a surprise to those chapters, alumnae associations, and alumnae who received those special phone calls and already had something to celebrate walking into Convention! The bonus was that there was a special “Award Winner” ribbon to add to your nametag!

Throughout Convention, attendees celebrated chapter and alumnae awards during the Celebrating Sisterhood dinner (collegian/chapter recognition) and the Ever Loyal, Ever Lasting dinner (alumnae and alumnae association recognition), which were full of enthusiasm as we celebrated many successes. This was the first year that chapters were recognized as Chapters of Distinction, a reflection on their superior performance in the Fraternity’s chapter accreditation

program. Attendees also celebrated members who have served the Fraternity with National Officer Milestones, including Patricia Manelski Giallanza, U, who has served Theta Phi Alpha for 45 years!

We also welcomed new members into the Sapphire Circle during the alumnae dinner, including Pam Cipiti Chatelain, Σ, and Concetta Lapa Slanders, K . The two new inductees joined Irene Caliendo, K , and Terry Primosch Kinch, AE, to complete this Convention’s Sapphire Circle.

Kristin Smedley was honored as our 2024 Siena Medalist. Kristin is a TEDx speaker, award-winning author, and trailblazer for the disability community. She is the CEO of the Curing Rentinal Blindness Foundation and co-founded the Thriving Blind Academy to solve the illiteracy and unemployment crisis in the blind community. Kristin is a trailblazer in the field and gave a TEDx talk on changing perceptions of blindness. Please see the feature article on Kristin Smedley in this issue.

One of the best parts of National Convention was the addition of a new photo wall, including a PopCam photo booth! Everyone had a great time stopping by to take photos with their chapters, group of sisters, or awards as the week went on.

Although the week was full of fun, it seems as though Theta Phi Alpha always has a hiccup or two at Convention. In the past, we had a loss of power in New Orleans and a fire alarm in Memphis. This Convention proved to be the same, with the fire alarm going off at 5 A.M., and a handful of attendees evacuating the hotel. It was a bonding moment outside in our pajamas!

A change to the Ritual for Compass Club this year was voted on before Convention. Compass Club was part of the Alumnae Reception, and alumna enjoyed socializing, snacks, and raffles after the Ritual. Compass Club welcomed seven new members this year and shared new and old stories with old and new friends. The collegians enjoyed a similar experience of snacks, raffles, and sisterhood time at the Collegiate Reception (unfortunately the pool party was rained out!).

Saturday afternoon afforded attendees to break out of the hotel and venture out to the B&O Railroad Museum, the birthplace of American railroading, located in downtown Baltimore. The museum tells the story of American history through the railroad system, as well as shows the impact of culture and innovation that the railroad has had on our country. For more information on the museum, please visit their website.

The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation hosted many events in their Foundation Room, including the Parade of Prizes, t-shirt raffle, traveling Jenga blocks, and Theta Phi Alpha Across America, where

attendees could bring in memories or photos and post them on the map to show where their chapter was located. The Foundation’s Silent Auction, a crowd favorite, included some hot ticket items, like a handmade compass quilt (donated by Dana Garcia, Σ) and a denim jacket made by Sue Check, AX, with the Fraternity’s coatof-arms (donated by Traci Hamm, GA). Thank you to the many Convention attendees who bought raffles and bid on auction items!

One of the advantages of being right in the Inner Harbor was the ability to take in the beautiful weather and sightseeing that

the area had to offer. Many attendees took advantage of these features, including touring different ships, riding paddle boats and pirate boats, finding compasses around the harbor, and enjoying the area’s seafood restaurants. The Maryland crab dip was great everywhere!

Photobooth Fun!

Our Chicago Area sisters visited Oriole Park at Camden Yards to take in a baseball game, where the Cubs swept the Orioles 4-0!

Fraternity Night Banquet is always the closing to a wonderful week. Theta Phi Alpha said goodbye to, and welcomed, two new Grand Council members. We are excited for the five returning Grand Council members to continue their duties. It was exciting to see Irene (Caliendo) as the last sister standing during the Convention Countdown! The Guard of Honor expanded its circle to welcome four wearers into the fold (including this Editor! I can’t express my excitement and gratitude for this honor). It was truly a special night! Attendees received a beautiful set of Theta Phi Alpha engraved glasses as the favor from Fraternity Night.

After the Guard of Honor Ceremony, dinner, the Convention Countdown and Roll Call, and finally the Installation of the Grand Council, Fraternity Night took a turn into a dance party! With a DJ, the PopCam photo booth, and a ton of fun, attendees danced

for hours to celebrate a great Convention. It was a fun way to end the week and I’m sure we can all agree that we are looking forward to the same in 2026!

We continued to make big strides in Theta Phi Alpha this Convention, picking up from 2022 and continuing as we move towards 2026. Thank you to those who worked hard to plan Convention, whether it was on-location or working on a committee that presented business. The Fraternity is grateful for your contributions.

Hoping to ket-chup with you in 2026! Get your Heinz bottles ready as Theta Phi Alpha returns to PITTSBURGH for National Convention 2026!

Join us July 8-12, 2026 for the 55th National Convention!

QFA REBRANDS NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY

Theta Phi Alpha adopted the philanthropic cause of providing shelter to reduce homelessness in 1993. Over 30 years later, our philanthropic efforts continue to center around this cause. Rebranded to Hunger and Homelessness at our 2024 National Convention, our chapters strongly support this effort with their philanthropy and community service activities. This program intends for our members in Theta Phi Alpha to work towards providing shelter and necessary care items for those who need them and working to end food insecurity.

With this widespread cause, we offer chapters, alumnae associations, and individuals an opportunity to select a charitable organization that meets their organizational needs. A chapter

may wish to support an organization in a hands-on manner, such as providing volunteers to fulfill the philanthropy’s mission. Examples could include sorting collections (like a food drive) as directed by the organization or working in a soup kitchen. Another chapter may wish to perform an activity on campus or at a member’s home, such as compiling kits of personal care items, then bringing them to the organization, or sending letters supporting legislation to advocate for policies that reduce homelessness in their communities. Conversely, an alumnae association may run a fundraiser and provide the net proceeds to the beneficiary philanthropy. The possibilities are endless.

Theta Phi Alpha Welcomes Four Guard of Honor Recipients

Four esteemed alumnae were awarded the Guard of Honor during the Fraternity Night Banquet held at the 54th National Convention in Baltimore this past July. These alumnae join a long line of notable members whose contributions have advanced and sustained the Fraternity since the Guard’s inception in 1935 by the Board of Trustees. The Guard of Honor is the highest award that a member can receive.

SUSAN GRAU LEE, Sigma, #94

Sue Lee’s national service began in 1986 when she was appointed Chapter Governor and has included stints as Assistant Membership Chairman and Alumnae Initiation Manager. In full, Sue has given over 18 years of dedicated service to Theta Phi Alpha, and was the National President from 2016-2018. Currently, she serves as the Akron Area Alumnae Association President and National Membership Lead. Her lifetime commitment to Theta Phi Alpha was solidified when, while attending her second National Convention in 2008, sisters she had met at the 1984 National Convention remembered her and welcomed her warmly. “As women, we need to promote organizations that promote supporting each other and valuing our contributions, big or small. This is what

serving Theta Phi Alpha has shown me over and over again. I want to help make sure that experience is available to young women today just as it was available to me.”

Sue did not expect to receive the Guard of Honor at Convention. She recounts, “The first Convention I attended and saw the ceremony I knew I wanted to be in that circle someday. The benefit of being in a smaller organization is that I knew some of those women personally, having met them through two of my Sigma (Chapter) sisters, Mary Lou Swartz and Patricia Marmaduke, who are Guard of Honor wearers. I'm very honored. It has reinforced my commitment to continue my involvement for as long as I feel I can contribute something meaningful. I look forward to serving Theta Phi Alpha in the next biennium wherever I am appointed, and I am excited to see who will join the Guard of Honor circle at our next Convention!”

GYPSY MASON, Beta Sigma, #95

Gypsy Mason has been a dedicated and loyal alumna, giving service to chapters and collegians for 17 years. Her service began in 2007 as a Board of Directors (BOD) Chairman (now Chapter Advisor) and went on to include Conference Director, Conference Administrator, and most recently, Chapter Regional Lead. “She has been the voice of reason, the pep talker, the devil’s advocate, and the biggest cheerleader for several of our chapters over these many years. And while it didn’t work out in every situation, this alumna can take well deserved pride in helping many of our chapters advance,” was shared with the Convention attendees as Gypsy was honored.

Gypsy was unable to attend Convention and received news about the award by a phone call from the Board of Trustees. “The news left me stunned and speechless. My mind raced as I tried to comprehend the magnitude of this recognition. The Guard of Honor is a prestigious award, and being chosen for it is a testament to one's dedication, hard work, and contributions. As the reality of the honor began to sink in, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude,” Gypsy shared.

LAUREN SVEC GALLO, Beta Beta, #96

“Mildred Connely was quoted in 1921 as saying, “When one reads the pages of this small but interesting book, one must certainly experience a little thrill of joy that the banner of Theta Phi Alpha has gone steadily forward under such happy auspices.” Imagine her thrill at knowing that The Compass magazine, our first means of fraternal communication long before social media, apps, and instant messaging were realities, has recently been so well maintained in the capable hands of this alumna,” was the beginning of the presentation for Lauren Svec Gallo, whose varied contributions over 16 years began and have continued with The Compass, including being its Editor-in-Chief and Director of Publication. She has also served on the Grand Council as the National Vice President-Alumnae for two terms.

“Theta Phi Alpha is such an important part of my life. The Fraternity has given me so many wonderful gifts – including relationships and memories, as well as leadership opportunities and skills along the way. The friendships that I treasure in Theta Phi Alpha bring me so

much joy, and serving the Fraternity allows me to give back to an organization that has given me so much. It's still a surreal feeling that I was awarded the Guard of Honor. I don't think it's sunk in yet. I am humbled to join the circle of the sisters who came before me. The feelings of love and sisterhood are so overwhelming and heartwarming. This Convention really filled my Theta Phi Alpha cup and receiving the Guard of Honor was just the cherry on top,” Lauren shared.

Debra’s volunteer service began in 2002, when as a college graduate she supported her local chapter to become installed as the Gamma Zeta Chapter and was subsequently initiated as an alumna. As shared during the ceremony, “From her first tenure as a BOD Chairman, this alumna has been a constant and valued steward of the chapter, loving and supporting each succeeding group of collegians like they are family. This woman is beloved, truly beloved by her chapter. And she loves them right back, fiercely and loyally.” All told, Debra has given loyal service primarily supporting prospective chapters and new members, most recently as a New Member Lead, for over 21 years. Debra was not expecting the calls that flooded in from Convention attendees to share the exciting news. “I have witnessed many sisters receive the Guard of Honor award over the years. I always agreed that each sister who was presented the Guard of Honor embodied our Theta Phi Alpha Creed and values. I never imagined that I would be a part of that amazing group of women. I continue to be completely overwhelmed with disbelief and amazement that my name has been added to the Guard of Honor list. I feel incredibly humbled and honored to be a Theta Phi Alpha Guard of Honor recipient,” Debra enthused.

“The Guard of Honor award is recognition for continuing to live our Theta Phi Alpha Ritual and Creed during alumnae years. It is an outward symbol worn by those who consistently share time and talents to help sisters across the nation and continually form new bonds with sisters of all ages and backgrounds. I encourage every sister to seek opportunities with National Office to give back to Theta Phi Alpha in your alumnae years. It is so rewarding to grow in Theta Phi Alpha as an alumna and to grow in sisterhood with women who would have never been a part of my life if I had not continued to say ‘yes’ to Theta Phi Alpha.”

DEBRA BINGHAM ASHBY, Gamma Zeta, #97

Our newest Guard of Honor recipients shared advice on those considering national service to the Fraternity:

“Just do it. There are so many opportunities available for any level of time commitment, many different skills needed, working alone, as part of a team or leading a team. Even if you need to step back due to career or family commitments at various times of life, come back when you are able. Our collegiate members are our future, and our alumnae members are our greatest resource right now; our collegians need us to support them.” – Susan Grau Lee

“Volunteering as an alumna for Theta Phi has been deeply rewarding, offering a profound sense of accomplishment and fulfillment from knowing that I have made a meaningful impact on others’ lives. Serving in my various roles has allowed me to contribute to the betterment of our fraternity, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and learning. Additionally, it has provided opportunities to develop and refine my own skills, such as leadership and problem-solving, while also expanding my network by connecting with sisters who share my passion for making a difference.” – Gypsy Mason

“My advice to other alumnae about national involvement is simply to show up and get involved! Join an alumnae association if there is one in your area, fill out the National Officer Interest Form, and apply to facilitate when the Fraternity asks for facilitators for any leadership trainings/National Convention. One of the best ways to connect with other alumnae (which could organically lead to conversations about involvement and opportunities) is coming to National Convention.”

“I encourage every sister to seek opportunities with National Office to give back to Theta Phi Alpha in your alumnae years. It is so rewarding to grow in Theta Phi Alpha as an alumna and to grow in sisterhood with women who would have never been a part of my life if I had not continued to say “yes” to Theta Phi Alpha.”

COMING SOON

Emerging Chapter at Gordon State College!

The Grand Council of Theta Phi Alpha is pleased to announce the acceptance of an invitation to establish an emerging chapter at Gordon State College, located in Barnesville, Georgia, in Spring 2025.

After determining there was a deep interest in sorority life on campus and reviewing applications from the member groups of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), the faculty and staff involved in the sorority extension committee selected Theta Phi Alpha to join the community at Gordon State College.

“Joining a campus community is always an exciting opportunity. We look forward to partnering with Gordon State College to bring the Theta Phi Alpha experience to the campus,” said National President Kristin Henkenius. This new campus organization will offer opportunities in leadership development, wellness programming, philanthropy, networking, and social offerings.

Stay tuned for more information about volunteering and about the emerging chapter coming this spring!

KRISTIN SMEDLEY RECEIVES SIENA MEDAL

Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” rang through the halls of National Convention, as the 2024 Siena Medalist, Kristin Smedley, shared her journey raising two children who were born with a retinal disease that ensured they would become blind. Through Kristin’s impassioned telling of her journey from new mom to impactful advocate and champion, the audience laughed – and cried –at the challenges and the successes that the family had in not simply coming to terms with the diagnosis, but in moving from anger and fear to finding a way to thrive. Indeed, Kristin shared the THRIVER Formula for Success:

Tools

Handicapable

Responsibility

Inter/Independence

Value

Emotion

Risk Taking

They have certainly thrived, with her sons being successful in athletics, talented musicians, college students, and the best big brothers to their

equally talented sister, who is sighted. Kristin shared that it was her need to see the world differently that created the space for her sons to move forward with resources and tools –and belief – to do so successfully.

About Kristin Smedley

Kristin Smedley is a renowned TEDx speaker, award-winning author, and a pioneering advocate for the disability community. She co-founded and serves as CEO of the only global patient organization dedicated to those with CRB1 LCA/ RP, a rare form of blindness that affects her two sons. Through her leadership, the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation has raised over $4 million and successfully spearheaded the establishment of National Rare Eye Disease Awareness Day. Notably, H.R. 625 – the first piece of U.S. legislation ever submitted in braille – champions improved resources for blind and visually impaired Americans.

Kristin played a key role in the approval of the first FDA-approved gene therapy for inherited retinal

diseases in collaboration with Spark Therapeutics. She also delivered a powerful TEDx Talk in New York City, challenging perceptions of blindness, and partnered with Comcast Media to promote awareness of the inclusive X1 product.

As a bestselling author, Kristin wrote Thriving Blind: Stories of Real People Succeeding Without Sight, and her award-winning children’s book What I Can Be Is Up to Me champions inclusivity. Additionally, she co-created the short film The Greatest Equalizer, funded by Salesforce, which emphasizes her core message: highlighting ability within disability and turning disadvantages into advantages.

In 2022, Kristin co-founded Thriving Blind Academy, aimed at addressing the blind community’s illiteracy and unemployment crisis. Her programs and coaching now reach participants across six continents. She is currently producing a feature film, Curveball, that relays her powerful story in supporting her two sons to adulthood while navigating the challenges of blindness.

Dear Theta Phi Alphas,

Hello from the 2024-2026 members of the Grand Council! We are honored to lead our Fraternity and are passionate about ensuring that Theta Phi Alpha remains a relevant, sustainable organization that provides a place of belonging for all our members.

The State of the Fraternity, shared in July 2024, introduced the vision of the ideal state of Theta Phi Alpha as developed by the 2022-2024 Grand Council. We believe this ideal state will guide Theta Phi Alpha into the future.

The Ideal State of Theta Phi Alpha

• Engagement: All members are engaged to their fullest capacity.

• Operations: Theta Phi Alpha has the internal infrastructure to support operations.

The ideal state of Theta Phi Alpha became the basis for our 20242029 strategic plan. The strategic plan will provide the framework for positive, incremental change and guide the work of the Grand Council and our staff. Our goals for 2024-2029 under each area are listed below.

To be in a healthy financial state

• Standardize and socialize the narrative of the Theta Phi Alpha Experience.

• Cultivate experiences for various demographics to engage in meaningful ways.

• Analyzing a member’s affinity for National Theta Phi Alpha and assessing to increase this affinity over time.

All members engaged to their fullest capacity

• Define levels of engagement.

• Develop a training infrastructure for volunteers.

• Develop a support plan for volunteers.

• Develop a transition plan for collegian to alumna.

• Develop a recommended readiness plan for potential nationally-elected officers.

• Identify areas causing disengagement.

• Develop a year-round assessment plan of experiences in Theta Phi Alpha.

Have internal infrastructure to support operations

• Conduct an internal audit of all procedures against the policies of Theta Phi Alpha to ensure compliance.

• Identify barriers in our operational structure that prevent streamlining processes.

• Increase the capability of establishing and supporting large chapters.

• Continued development of policies to implement policy governance.

• Develop the ideal volunteer appointment process.

• Develop an exit plan from the physical National Office.

The Grand Council will provide updates on our progress after each of our quarterly meetings this biennium. Much of the initial work involves strategic conversations and ensuring that the internal system and structure are in place to support our strategic goals.

Our committees for 2024-2026 are an important part of the work being done to reach our strategic goals. Click on this link to learn about our committees for this biennium and apply to be on one.

Theta Phi Alpha belongs to all of us and we welcome feedback from our members as we plan for the future. We look forward to a productive biennium!

Yours in the bonds of sisterhood,

Happy 50th Anniversary, Alpha Mu!

The Alpha Mu Chapter at Northern Kentucky University celebrated its 50th Anniversary on April 30, 2024. The chapter was installed on Founders’ Day in 1974 by 18 women. Collegians and alumnae came together for a special dinner dance to celebrate the occasion.

“Founders’ Day celebrations are always special, but there is something special about celebrating a milestone anniversary! What a night of sisterhood and fun, reliving all those special memories while making new ones!”

Congratulations, Alpha Mu!

“Founders’ Day this year was truly like no other. It was an amazing experience getting to celebrate 50 years of sisterhood with alumnae, sisters from other chapters, and community members. There was so much love in one room.”

Dearest Alumnae Members,

Have you ever sat and reminisced over the photo of our Founders sitting on the porch on that day they were beginning our fraternity? I often wonder what they thought as they readied themselves to embark on this adventure of a lifetime. Do you think they even thought that you and I would be looking at their picture all these years later, wishing we might be sitting on that porch with them if given the chance?

I'm sure they would tell us, "Ladies, this life isn't all it's cracked up to be!" In fact, if you look back on some of your chapter pictures, do you remember everything as perfect? Probably not! But I do HOPE that you look back at those pictures, like the Founders picture, and remember the faces, moments, and memories that shaped you into who you are today. If I asked you now to pull out those pictures, I hope there are members you can call on today to remind you of those special experiences.

Over the next biennium, Theta Phi Alpha knows members connect with one another in various ways – there is no one-size-fits-all program, effort, event, town hall, or virtual space. Geographical areas spend time and engage in various ways. While we continue to try a variety of efforts, I can guarantee that we will let you know you matter every time we connect. Theta Alpha is grateful to have YOU as a member! As an organization, we are grounded in the ideals of Justice, Friendship, Loyalty, Truth, and Honor. Every day, the Grand Council envisions and strategizes how best to create authentic spaces for Theta Phis to engage at every level, and we can't do that without you!

If you could not attend our 54th National Convention in Baltimore this past July, I encourage you to watch the State of the Fraternity here to learn about all the remarkable strides we have made over the last two years. Your support can keep this going!

While we recognize everyone's financial situation varies, our hope is that if your life allows, make your contribution today at: my.thetaphialpha. org/billing/tpa/alumdues/ billing.aspx or by printing out the remittance form and returning it to the Theta Phi Alpha National Office. You can also make recurring payments for more convenience. You may also include your annual donations to the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation General Fund. To learn how far your dues go, visit: thetaphialpha.org/your-support-matters.

A minimum Alumnae Dues payment of $50 establishes you as an alumna in good standing, allows you eligibility to serve as a National Officer, and continues to build development programs that help each of us to be who we are meant to be. Your support and involvement will help us continue to achieve great things for our sisterhood. As we continue the 10-year charm series to honor Theta Phi Alpha's Founders, Mildred Connely is the next limitededition Founder to have as an alumnae keepsake charm to add to your collection. This appreciation gift is available to the first 100 alumnae who contribute $100 or more during the year.

I am grateful and honored to serve you this biennium as your National Vice President-Alumnae. Please know I can be reached at aseegel@thetaphialpha.org for questions and comments and to listen to your concerns anytime. It is now – more than ever – that Theta Phi Alpha needs YOU!

Yours in the bonds of sisterhood,

How does your involvement with QFA affect your life?: My involvement in Theta Phi Alpha has had a positive impact on my life since the day I became a new member. Theta Phi Alpha has given me some of my best friends, allowed me to connect with members from all over the country and given me a volunteer experience for an organization that provides opportunities for our members in college and beyond.

Can you share a piece of advice with members who are interested in being on Grand Council one day?: Experience

Theta Phi Alpha in many ways to help develop a perspective that is different from just your chapter or your alumnae association.

The accomplishment I’m most proud of is my two kids - Elizabeth and Nic.

What advice do you have for our collegians regarding how to make the most of their collegiate membership?: Take advantage of every opportunity you can to spend time with your sisters. Never again will you all be living in the same place.

Best QFA collegiate and/or alumnae memory/experience: My best collegiate memories are of when would have a retreat or gathering in the basement of one of the dorms. We would cook food, play games, watch movies – just enjoy each other. My best alumnae memories center around National Convention, getting to meet sisters from all over country. A special Theta Phi Alpha memory is being at my daughter Elizabeth’s Initiation in 2012! There isn’t anything that a hug and a listening ear can’t fix.

I really admire women who stand up for what is right, even if it is difficult.

My favorite television show is Nebraska Football…I love all college football!

What particular line of the Creed do you relate to and enjoy most?: Wisdom in each deed and plan – I strive for the decisions I make to have a positive impact on those around me and Theta Phi Alpha.

Name an item off your bucket list: To visit all 50 states.

What is your favorite app?: Ibotta and FetchRewards – I love to use coupons and these apps fulfill that need!

If you have the opportunity to know the future, would you want to know?: I really don't want to know the future!

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person?: The Amalfi Coast in Italy

What’s your favorite kind of weather?: I am a summer girl!

Coffee or tea?: Tea...Earl Grey to be exact. What would you choose if you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life?: Shrimp alfredo pasta with chocolate ice cream for dessert.

Chapter of Initiation: Alpha Tau, 2012

Alumnae Association: Dallas Fort Worth Area

Residence: Dallas, Texas

Education: B.S. Aerospace Engineering, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; M.S. Engineering Management, EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University

Work Experience: 9 years at Southwest Airlines as Compliance Analyst, Fleet Strategy Analyst, Aircraft Mechanical Systems (Hydraulics, Fire Protection, Landing Gear) Engineer, Sr. Maintenance Program Manager

National QFA Service: Chapter Administration Team (Chapter Manager, Region Lead)

How does your involvement with QFA affect your life?: For my dayto-day, it helps me with two things: (1) grow professionally, allowing me to navigate through different experiences; (2) help relax outside of work, a way for me to take my mind off of work and focus on something different.

Can you share a piece of advice with women who are interested in being on Grand Council one day?: Try it! Even if you are uncertain or afraid of trying something different and new. It allows you to gain different type of experience and think strategically for the future of the Fraternity.

Who are some of the women you look up to (famous or not) and why?: Cynt Marshall is the CEO of the Dallas Mavericks. She came to speak at one of our Women Empowered events and changed my perspective and outlook to my core. She told us, “Don’t let anything cost you your character,” and that really resonated with to my core. We are, who we are through different events and experiences we endured. Do not let external factors change who you are! You can be unique. Always, be your authentic self! The accomplishment I’m most proud of is being a STEM mentor for a middle school student at an event. Through the years, I realized that there were better ways and decisions. But, at the time, I just did not know all the options available. Watching my mentee grow up and find her place in the STEM world and accept her first internship offer has been an unexpected but gratifying and fulfilling experience! I am so very proud of all my mentees for trying their best.

What advice do you have for our collegians regarding how to make the most of their collegiate membership?: Be your own authentic self. Do not let others tell you who are you are, as you know who you are. That way, you can be a better sister, a good student, and a great young professional.

Best QFA collegiate and/or alumnae memory/experience: When I became a new member, we had a flag football event the first weekend. Growing up in different countries, I have never heard of flag football, but had to sub in for another

sister, as I was the only other person present for the chapter. After a heated argument with our intramural referee, as I was in shorts and flip-flops, I was allowed to play and lasted maybe 15 seconds on the field before a dramatic fall. (I found out years later, that my fiancé was that intramural ref.) I was so very embarrassed and started detaching myself from the chapter, but the sisters pulled me back and we became such close friends. I grew up with 20 other male cousins and never really understood sisterhood, but my sisters changed my life around and showed me the potential of friendship. There isn’t anything that Duct tape!! (is it broken? Is it falling? My first response usually is “can we use duct tape on it?”) can’t fix.

You’d be surprised to find out that I “pebble” my friends on social media with cat videos, as I cannot resist sending my friends funny cat videos.

What topic could you give a 20minute presentation on without any preparation?: Electric Vehicles –I owned a full EV and now own a hybrid. I can talk to someone (and sometimes convinced a few people) to purchase EVs! My favorite hobby/activity outside of QFA is Zumba and golf. Music and dancing are my passions. I am not a fan of a regular workout but will Zumba for hours. Golf helps me concentrate on one thing and melt away other concerns. And the joy of a great drive! Nothing makes me happier on the course.

Name an item off your bucket list: Visit the Aurora Sky Station in Sweden to watch the aurora borealis.

What’s a fun fact/little known thing about you that people wouldn’t expect?: I grew up in three different countries. I was born in South Korea, grew up in New Zealand, and went to high

school in Canada. All before coming down here for college and stayed in the states.

If you have the opportunity to know the future, would you want to know?: I would like to know if my family is happy and satisfied.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person?: Switzerland –the scenery is incredible and the alps were extremely impressive.

What’s your favorite kind of weather?:

Somewhere between 30-35, with snow falling. I love watching the snow fall with hot cocoa or apple cider in my hand, while in a hot tub.

Coffee or tea?: I am not a coffee-drinker; but love a London Fog or matcha latte!

What would you choose if you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life?: I am terrible at eating the same food, so this would be not enjoyable for me. However, I do love sushi and could eat it for a few weeks!

DR. ANGELA

PEDI SEEGEL

National Vice President-Alumnae

Chapter of Initiation: Alpha Epsilon, 1995

Alumnae Association: Northeastern Nebraska, NOAAA

Residence: Franklin Square, N.Y.

Education: B.S. Human Services (Concentration in Social Work), St. John’s University; M. Ed. Student Development Practice in Higher Education, St. John’s University; Ed.D. Instructional Leadership, St. John’s University

Work Experience: Executive Director of the Institute for Vincentian Impact (Institute’s purpose is to creatively embed the University’s mission more visibly into the educational experience of its students

through community engagement.)

National QFA Service: BASICS Coordinator; Conference Administrator; Conference Director; Director of Colonies; Director of Extension; NPC 3rd Alternate Delegate; Chapter Advisor; Grand Council Expansion Committee; Director of Alumnae Connections & Engagement; Alumnae Connections and Engagement Lead; Siena Medal Committee

How does your involvement with QFA affect your life?: Theta Phi Alpha has become a place where I have been nurtured, cared for, and welcomed to be the very best version of myself in the world, and for the world.

Can you share a piece of advice with women who are interested in being on Grand Council one day?: Not a huge fan of advice, however, I waited a really long time to run for Grand Council. I've been initiated for over 30 years and involved on a national level for over 25 years in a variety of capacities. I feel like this level of wisdom will help navigate the landscape of this leadership role.

Who are some of the women you look up to (famous or not) and why?: I am one of eight children and I have six biological sisters and a super mom. I think they are some of the most AMAZING women I know for a variety of reasons. Ultimately, it is because these are the women I look to who have shown me what it means to be self-confident, productive, optimistic, a go-getter, a risk-taker, empathetic, unafraid to stand up for what I believes, proud of my accomplishments, unbothered by what others say or think, and true to myself.

The best vacation I’ve ever been on is the one I don’t have to plan, AND where I am just sitting on a beach with no schedule, nowhere to be, no one looking for me, with a good book and a bottomless margarita glass.

The accomplishment I’m most proud of is my family. I have been married for almost 25 years to my college sweetheart with three amazing children – Andrew, Aidan, and Emily.

My favorite television show is The Big Bang Theory - the witty humor and characters really make a great show!

What advice do you have for our collegians regarding how to make the most of their collegiate membership?: As I said earlier, not a huge fan of advice, but ultimately, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”

Best QFA collegiate and/or alumnae memory/experience: A long, long time in 1996, Theta Phi Alpha held a National Convention in Buffalo, N.Y. Twenty brassy, young women from the Alpha Epsilon Chapter decided to load into four cars to venture off to that Convention. While I can’t tell you who was elected that Convention or what proposals were voted on, what I do remember are the women in the room. I remember sitting in one of the collegian hallways, and with my terrible New York accent requesting Mari Ann Callais ( AB, Past National President) to play “Puff the Magic Dragon” on her guitar. I remember sitting with Katie Evans (National President at the time) for lunch and she asked what it was like being a newly initiated Theta Phi. To say it was an awe-inspiring and transformative Theta Phi Alpha experience for me would not do it justice. These are the very moments that made my collegiate experiences unforgettable. My first Convention I learned what it meant to be a Theta Phi, from the women I encountered to the Ritual I experienced and opportunities I was afforded.

There isn’t anything that BOB the BUILDER can’t fix.

You’d be surprised to find out that. . . I get SUPER nervous every time I present publicly.

My favorite hobby/activity outside of QFA is cooking and trying new recipesI especially love to host parties and create fun spaces to enjoy.

When I was little, I wanted to be a social worker when I grew up.

Name an item off your bucket list: Skydiving

What is your favorite/best motivational quote?: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

Besides QFA , what would you say you are most passionate about?: Community engagement/service.

If you have the opportunity to know the future, would you want to know?: I want to know that my children will be happy and healthy in their future life choices.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person?: A sunrise in Hawaii.

What’s your favorite kind of weather?: I LOVE THE SUMMER and THE SUN!

Coffee or tea?: I can’t get enough COFFEE!! What would you choose if you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life?: Enchiladas

Chapter of Initiation: Beta Alpha, 2002

Alumnae Association: Northern New Jersey

Residence: Iselin, N.J.

Education: B.A. Anthropology, Stony Brook University; M.S.W., Stony Brook University

Work Experience: 15 years at a psychiatric hospital – currently working as the Director of Social Work (which includes overseeing all of the social workers in the hospital as well as serving as the MSW Intern Coordinator for the facility with our local universities social work programs).

National QFA Service: Director of Emerging Chapters; Director of Extension; Emerging Chapter Coordinator; Beta Alpha Chapter Advisor and New Member Education Advisor; Gamma Pi Chapter Advisor and New Member Education Advisor; Recruitment Chairman, Northern New Jersey Alumnae Association; Central N.J. and New York City Alumnae Panhellenic Associations; OLT, Leadership Conference, and Theta Phi Day Facilitator

Personal: I have been married for 10 years. My son is almost six and just started kindergarten. He loves every opportunity to stick his face on the camera during a Theta Phi Zoom meeting. I also have two dogs who are now seniors. I am sad to see how old they have gotten but love that we can truly just be couch potatoes together.

Can you share a piece of advice with members who are interested in being on Grand Council one day?: I think this is a great way to get involved. If you have an interest in sharing ideas and having big picture discussions and work together to help make plans for Theta Phi Alpha’s future, then this is a great opportunity to consider. Take time to volunteer in different facets of volunteering and being involved with various projects.

What advice do you have for our collegians regarding how to make the most of their collegiate membership?: Get involved in some way. This doesn’t

mean you need to take a leadership position, but you can join a committee or even help out with a specific event, you get out what you put in. Take the opportunity to interact with a different chapter or attend a regional/national event – you’ll learn a lot from this interaction.

What is your favorite app?: Marco Polo has been a game changer for keeping in touch with friends. It has allowed me to become closer to people by leaving more meaningful and expressive conversations through video rather than text but allowing us each to respond when able to, where phone calls tend to be more difficult to hold regularly.

When I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up! I had an astronaut Cabbage Patch Kid and by the age of five or six I had memorized that NASA stood for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

What particular line of the Creed do you relate to and enjoy most?: Wisdom in each deed and plan. I prefer to use my or seek other’s wisdom in making plans rather than a hasty or impulsive decision.

Name an item off your bucket list: I’d like to learn American Sign Language and drive stick shift.

What topic could you give a 20-minute presentation on without any preparation?: Recipes that I love. I would happily discuss websites and cookbooks I use often and ways to modify those recipes. I love to bake and enjoy gifting treats to others.

If you have the opportunity to know the future, would you want to know?: I would say no. I have enough thoughts in my head already, I don’t need to add to that!! I will just wait to see what comes my way.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person?: This is a toss-up. I have stood on a glacier in

Iceland and looked out to a rainbow in the sky and I have watched the sunrise at the top of Haleakala in Maui, Hawaii, as the day brightened I got to see more and more of the island.

What’s your favorite kind of weather?:

I am an October baby, a perfect autumn day of 65-70 degrees. Clear, but with a slight breeze and the leaves have changed color and are falling and it’s just cool enough that you need a sweater but not a jacket and a hot cocoa or a hot apple cider will warm you right up.

Coffee or tea?: Iced coffee, hot tea.

What would you choose if you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life?: Pizza – as long as I could switch up the different toppings; otherwise anything that would involve a form of buffalo chicken.

CANDICE REDMOND BENDER

National Vice PresidentProgramming

Chapter of Initiation: Beta Lambda, 2011 Alumnae Association: Flint Area

Residence: Grand Blanc, Mich.

Education: B.S. Communications, Concentration in Speech Communication and Early Childhood Education and Development

Work Experience: Instructional Design Manager, Sigma Kappa; Coordinator of Programming, Theta Phi Alpha; Training and Development Specialist, University of Michigan-Flint

National QFA Service: Recruitment Coach; President and Program Planner, Flint Area Alumnae Association

How does your involvement with QFA affect your life?: It challenges me in ways I never thought possible. I strive to be a better friend and to spread kindness wherever possible.

Can you share a piece of advice with members who are interested in being on Grand Council one day?: Get involved and volunteer as soon as you can! Ask questions – as many as you can think of. Be passionate about something and come ready with ideas to share. The battle has only begun once we’ve identified areas of improvement – finding the solutions is the real task and requires collaboration with many people. Surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than you will serve you well.

What advice do you have for our collegians regarding how to make the most of their collegiate membership?: Say yes. Say yes to as much as you can (while making sure to fill your own cup first)! Not only will you be able to grow as a leader and a person, you will also be able to help others grow too, and that is a priceless experience.

There isn’t anything that compassion and empathy can’t fix.

You’d be surprised to find out that I’m a Certified Garden Consultant! My goal is to bring gardens to local schools, especially those in food deserts, and teach the students to grow their own food, while simultaneously meeting a need in the community by having the produce contribute to a food pantry for the students.

I really admire women who are outspoken about their beliefs. Whether I agree with them or not, it takes a lot of courage to speak up about something that one is passionate about, and I admire those who do so.

What particular line of the Creed do you relate to and enjoy most?: Honor valued over wealth. Transparency and integrity are two of my values, and this line articulates that perfectly. Wealth can come and go, but character and integrity are things that cannot be taken away.

Name an item off your bucket list: Visit Scotland and Ireland.

Besides QFA , what would you say you are most passionate about?: Ending food insecurity.

If you have the opportunity to know the future, would you want to know?: Yes and no - I like to be able to plan, so knowing generalities would be very helpful for that! However, I think our choices also influence potential outcomes for the future, so I’m not sure it would be possible to know the future and not make choices to try to change it.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person?: This is tough! I think I have to go with Acadia National Park in Maine - Jordan Pond was absolutely stunning and I really couldn’t, and still can’t, find the words to do it justice. It’s a must see!

What’s your favorite kind of weather?: My favorite weather is when it’s sunny. I do love warm weather, but no matter the season, I can enjoy it if the sun is shining bright.

Coffee or tea?: I don’t typically drink either, but once in a while I do like a chai tea with oat milk or raspberry tea with lemon.

What would you choose if you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life?: I would choose either pizza or nachos. There are so many ways you can make either of those things and keep the variety!

Chapter of Initiation: Beta Rho, 1996

Alumnae Association: South Florida

Residence: Coral Spring, Fl.

Education: B.S. Marketing Management, Goldey-Beacom College

Work Experience: 24 years working as a fulfillment manager for an online marketing company

National QFA Service: Leadership Conference Chairman; National Convention Chairman; Beta Nu Chapter Advisor; President, South Florida Alumnae Association

Personal: Husband, Shane, and son, Cole

How does your involvement with QFA affect your life?: I have met some of the greatest people in our organization. There isn’t a day that I do not interact with someone from our organization whether it is as a National Officer or a great friendship I have formed over the years. I have people in my life that have made a world of difference, and I can reach out to them at any time. I have learned so much from all of my interactions and friendships over the years.

Can you share a piece of advice with women who are interested in being on Grand Council one day?: Stay involved even after you graduate. I have stayed involved and have met many of my best friends as an alumna. I have been able to serve this organization with great friends and people that I still communicate with to this day. It is a lifelong commitment, and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

What advice do you have for our collegians regarding how to make the most of their collegiate membership?: Try to help each other along the way. Make the best of your collegiate experience. There will be bad times and there will be great times. Choosing how to deal with each experience was the key to it all for me. Not everything is easy, but I wouldn’t change a minute of my experience.

Best QFA collegiate and/or alumnae memory/experience: As a collegian, I lost my mom. I still remember all of my sisters helping me through everything, and National Office helping me when I had to call them as well.

You’d be surprised to find out that I played college softball. I was a scholarship athlete in college.

What topic could you give a 20minute presentation on without any preparation?: Anything Disney related, Theta Phi Alpha facts, and sports. My favorite hobby/activity outside of QFA is photography and sports.

Name an item off your bucket list: Snowboarding in the Swiss Alps.

National Office Announces New Staff

Welcome, Lily Keister!

Lily joined Theta Phi Alpha in May as our new Coordinator of Programming and Membership Engagement.

Lily joins the National Office staff, coming from a campusbased background, with her B.S. in Educational Studies and her M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs from Kent State University, while working alongside the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) community amongst other varying departments.

She brings a passion for leadership development and education to support the members of Theta Phi Alpha. She has been responsible for developing educational opportunities for collegiate and alumnae members, volunteers, and advisors. Lily will provide administrative, program development, and training support for Theta Phi Alpha’s programming activities and initiatives.

Additionally, the role supports the volunteer management process, membership retention, and recognition. Lily aims to

create a comprehensive education plan for Theta Phi Alpha regarding various leadership roles.

Although she is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, she is excited to enhance Theta Phi Alpha's mission and bring a new perspective to the organization.

We are excited to have you, Lily!

Theta Phi Alpha would also like to say a big thank you to Hailey Corley, who served the National Office as the previous Coordinator of Programming and Membership Engagement from 2022-2024. Best of luck, Hailey!

Theta Phi Alpha Foundation has been hard at work during the second half of the 2024 calendar year, setting a new direction!

Right before the 2024 National Convention in Baltimore, Theta Phi Alpha Foundation was thrilled to announce the restructuring and new names of six academic scholarships. These scholarships, totaling $23,500, were awarded to undergraduate and graduate students. The total of the 2024 scholarships was the largest amount ever awarded in Theta Phi Alpha Foundation’s history. Now named after words from our Creed, these scholarships present a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate sisters to apply for the 2025 calendar year. Applications are open for 2025 Theta Phi Alpha Foundation Scholarships. Please visit the Academic Scholarship page for more information.

Another incredible milestone achieved through Convention was the official endowment of the Charmaine LaLane Memorial Scholarship, which is now endowed. Charmaine, sister of Alpha Epsilon, is fondly remembered as a lover and supporter of the arts. Her unexpected passing in 2003 has profoundly impacted her chapter, Alpha Epsilon, and Theta Phi Alpha as a whole. We are so grateful to honor her legacy through this scholarship.

At Convention, the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation room was constantly bustling with activity! The Theta Phi Alpha

Foundation Directors were delighted to meet new sisters, reconnect with those already known, and share our message of support for Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity. The Foundation was proud to sponsor Siena Medalist recipient Kristin Smedley, whose message about persevering through life’s challenges resonated with all Convention attendees. With the generous support of donors from members attending the convention to those supporting at home, Theta Phi Alpha Foundation was able to raise almost $20,000 through our silent auction, Penguin Parade of Prizes, our newest fan-favorite event –Mystery Boxes, and Fraternity Night Roll Call. Thanks to your unwavering support, this Convention was one of the most significant donations fundraised by conventions in Theta Phi Alpha Foundation’s history! We sincerely thank each and every one of you who helped us achieve this wonderful milestone.

As we continue to look towards the future, Theta Phi Alpha Foundation launched our newest appeal to the parents of collegiate members in September, National Daughter’s Day. This appeal highlights the incredible work that Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity and Theta Phi Alpha Foundation can do to support their children through college and beyond. Theta Phi Alpha Foundation also continues working towards educational technology charges to help enhance the experience for Theta Phi Alpha members. We continue to ask for your gracious support on these charges.

Finally, Theta Phi Alpha Foundation welcomed four volunteers to our ambassador program this year: Margaret Brown, K ; Mia Siclari, K ; Meagan Compton, C ; Lucy Holmes-Higgin, AE; Ainsley Robson, AT; Erin Reede, BQ; and, Jessica Seleman, DO. Theta Phi Alpha Foundation Directors have been thrilled to work with these amazing volunteers and extend our heartfelt thanks for their support. We would love to continue building our team. If interested, please consider filling out a volunteer application through our website.
