Welcome to the July edition of The Swindonian, can you believe we have been in print twelve months now!

With the sun shining strong through the end of June lets keep our fingers crossed the good weather continues through July along with some sporting successes with British hopes in both the men’s and women’s at Wimbledon, we also have the Lionesses hopefully reaching the World Cup Final and maybe even the cricket teams bringing some trophies too.

July also sees a lot of music events on our doorstep.

Swindon’s long running festival, The Shuffle is back in Old Town, MFOR are bringing some big names to Lydiard and WOMAD will be bringing the diverse to the UK at the end of the month.

If you are not interested in the music events or celebrating (hopefully) our sporting success then head on over to Ben’s Stagecoach column and see if he has something for you to enjoy on stage.

Whatever you find yourself doing this month, make sure you enjoy the sunshine and feel free to share the magazine with your friends and family once you have finished with it.

improvements. The last stage of the project will reduce traffic on the roundabout by allowing those travelling from the retail park towards the motorway to exit via Great Western Way, rather than Wootton Bassett Road.

The work is anticipated to take 12-16 weeks to complete.

Wellington Street now complete

The major transformation of Wellington Street connecting the railway station to the town centre was completed and reopened to traffic, cyclists and pedestrians on Monday 10th June.

Some of the improvements made are: •

New, separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians

A new, raised road with contrasting surfacing and sharper road markings

•

A safer junction where Wellington Street meets Milford Street and Manchester Road, with ramps to slow down vehicles and bikes, and tactile paving around the kerb line

•

A new zebra crossing over Wellington Street and new toucan crossing over Milford Street

•

A smarter, more pleasant feel, with less clutter of street furniture

Reducing traffic on Mannington Roundabout From Monday 17th June Swindon Borough Council’s Highways team began the final phase of the Mannington Roundabout 4

Wiltshire Air Ambulance AGM Wiltshire Air Ambulance held its annual general meeting on Wednesday 12th June for the first time since it moved to its new airbase in Semington near Melksham.

The charity moved to the purpose-built airbase at Outmarsh, just over a year ago, bringing together the aircrew, helicopter, fundraising and administrative teams under one roof.

The annual general meeting looks back over the last year and ahead to what the future holds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

In addition, a number of key supporters were speaking about how and why they got involved with the charity.

Swindon & Wiltshire Pride celebrated Volunteers’ Week!

Swindon & Wiltshire Pride are still looking for volunteers for a wide range of roles.

Swindon & Wiltshire Pride will be returning to the Town Gardens this Summer having just announced Nationwide as the main sponsor, and as the countdown continues, the organisers championed the army of volunteers that have been crucial to the come back during this year’s Volunteers’ Week, which ran from 1st-7th June.

From supporting the regular fundraisers and donating equipment, to setting up the festival and manning the bar, there are no shortage of roles to fill when planning an event of this size.

For many charities, the week was a chance to encourage people to try volunteering for the first time and help people find out how, through volunteering, they can make a real difference to their community.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority announces new Chairwoman

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority has met for the first time since the formation of two new constituent authorities and selected a new Chair in Councillor Rebecca Knox.

The Authority membership is now as follows: •

Swindon Borough Council (three places) – Cllr Abdul Amin, Cllr Brian Mattock & Cllr Garry Perkins.

Wiltshire Council (six places) – Cllr Ernie Clark, Cllr Peter Hutton, Cllr Bob Jones, Cllr Christopher Newbury, Cllr Paul Oatway & Cllr Pip Ridout.

Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council

(five places) – Cllr Steve Baron, Cllr Malcolm Davies, Cllr Paul Hillard, Cllr Toby Johnson & Cllr Ann Stribley.

Cllr Knox was unanimously elected as Chair of the Authority; Cllr Byron Quayle was unanimously elected as vice-Chair; Cllr Bob Jones was re-elected as Chair of the Finance and Governance Committee and Cllr Brian Mattock was unanimously elected as vice-Chair of the Finance and Governance Committee Cllr Knox said: “I am very

honoured to have been elected as Chair of Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority.

We have responsibility for a truly excellent fire and rescue service, and I know I speak for my fellow elected Members when I say how proud we are of our workforce. I am sure that we will continue to deliver great results across our prevention, protection and emergency response activities over the coming year.”

Members of the Strategic Leadership Team also reported the Annual Service Performance Review to the Authority.

The report shows how

the Service is performing against its priorities and targets set by the Authority through the Community Safety Plan.

The performance review shows that the Service has delivered over 11,500 Safe and Well visits to high risk homes in 2018-19, as well as educating over 40,000 children through its education initiatives and partnerships.

The Service also conducted almost 1,200 fire safety audits of commercial premises and had over 1,100 positive engagements with businesses.

Almost 15,000 emergency incidents were attended in the same period, with 87 people rescued from fires and 328 rescued from road traffic collisions.

Chief Fire Officer, Ben Ansell said: “The Strategic Leadership Team and I are very pleased with the performance of the Service.

This annual performance summary shows the benefits of our combination in both the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery. I look forward to working with Cllr Knox and our new Fire Authority over the coming year to ensure we build on and continue this excellent work.�

Whilst we continue to operate in challenging financial climate, with difficult decisions to be made, our fantastic staff are key to ensuring we keep our communities safe, whether at home, at work or on our roads.

National Lottery grants awarded to Swindon groups £25,000 has been awarded to three Swindon community groups by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Prime Theatre have received £10,000 to set up ‘Inclusive Arts for Deaf Young People’ which will be a programme of art-based activities for deaf children and young people throughout Swindon.

Inner Flame have been awarded £9,300 to run a programme of virtual reality courses designed to improve self-awareness and reduce anxiety for young people with mental health issues.

Headway Swindon will be creating a bespoke cookbook to help support independent living, improve wellbeing and reduce loneliness for brain injury survivors.

Allergies are for life, not just for the summer!

Did you know that skin allergies are actually the most common cause of external ear infections in dogs?

This is because the skin within the ear canal can also become irritated by exposure to allergens.

As a result, ear infections due to allergies can occur in one or both ears, ranging from mild to severe, and are likely to re-occur if the underlying allergy is not identified, treated and continually managed.

Signs and Symptoms Ear infections cause irritation of the ear canal, which can result in…

•

Ear-scratching and/or head-shaking

•

Redness and/or swelling of the ears

•

A smelly discharge from the ears

•

Dry, crusted or scaly skin around the ears

•

Pain indicated by whining or a reluctance to have their ears touched

Diagnosis As ear infections are painful and can worsen quickly, it is important to consult your vet and seek treatment as soon as possible.

To identify and address the underlying cause of the ear infection, your vet will review your pet’s clinical history, conduct a physical examination, and thoroughly examine both of your pet’s ears - even if an infection is only suspected in one ear.

If the infection is suspected to be a result of allergies, further tests may also be required.

Treatment and Management Once the primary cause of the ear infection has been identified, your vet will clean or flush your pet’s ears to remove debris and

bacteria and to soothe any irritation.

Your vet may then also provide ear cleansing solutions, topical medication and/or antibiotics for you to continue treatment at home.

Police warn of courier fraud operation Individuals have been receiving phone calls from people claiming to be a police officer or banking official.

The suspect will say either: •

There has been fraudulent activity at the victims’ bank and the staff at the bank are involved, the victim is then asked to withdraw money to either keep it safe or assist the police with their investigation A business such as a jewellers or currency exchange is fraudulent and they require the victims’ assistance to help secure evidence by purchasing jewellery or exchange a large amount of currency to hand over to the police

•

The victims’ card has been compromised and used to purchase goods by a suspect, the victim is requested to withdraw their money to keep it safe or hand over their bank card to the police

Occasionally the victim will be told to dial a non-emergency extension of ‘161’ to receive confirmation of the individual’s bogus identity, the bogus official will advise the victim to lie about the reason for the withdrawal or purchase if challenged by staff, as the staff member is involved in the fraud.

A courier attends the victim’s home address to collect the goods the same day.

Often the victim is given a code word for the courier as a way of authentication.

It’s shuffling time again!

You could make a strong argument that in most creative quarters of this country, original music plays a subservient role to cover bands and tribute acts. It’s a shame, but it is what it is, and whilst nostalgia and comfort zones seem to dictate the musical landscape these days, anything that helps promote original music is not only a good thing but a necessary one.

And so it is on such an ethic that The Swindon Shuffle drives and thrives, a celebration of the town’s original sounds drawn together in one place over one long weekend and now back for its 13th year.

Between 11th and 14th of July, Old Town’s music venues play host to this fixture of the cultural calendar, offering everything from solo acoustica to full throttle rock bands, from strange electronic soundscapers to after gig DJ’s, punk, indie, pop and everything in between.

And best of all its free to get in! Whilst The Shuffle’s own website (www.swindonshuffle.org.uk) is the place to get the full picture, within the space available it is worth running through some of the highlights, a personal selection of musical morsels and an overview of the diversity of this cherished event.

And the perfect place to start is with Gaz Brookfield and The Company of Thieves headlining the Victoria on Thursday. From his Swindon musical roots Gaz has, through a lot of hard work, risen to a point where he now shares stages with The Levellers, New Model Army, The Wonder Stuff, Frank Turner and many more and he is bringing with him the full band experience, definitely a folk ’n’roll experience not to be missed.

The following day Raze*Rebuild bring their punked up Americana to the same venue, big songs, big choruses, big riffs, and a band that really blur the

lines between commerciality and cult status.

The Hop is a new venue to the event this year and it is here that you can find Flour Babies on Saturday, a band who sail more mercurial musical waters gathering around them everything from prog to post-punkery, angular indie to warped alt-rock.

The coveted last set of the event, which takes place at The Beehive on Sunday goes to the sartorially elegant Astral Ponies and

their wonderful blend of Victorian music hall, Americana, psychedelia and folky tunes. But more than anything The Shuffle is all about discovery, perhaps you will stumble across your new favourite band somewhere along the way… it does happen, a lot.

Will it be Wyldest’s lush sonic washes, quirky grooves and futuristic dreamscapes that steal your heart, No Side Effects strange dystopian electronica, Jamin Sun’s post-genre creations or

Fake Walnut Dash’s bluesy shoop-shoop antics?

All you can do is wander around and let a wave of new, original and exciting music wash over you.

What’s the worst that can happen? And when you have had your fill of live band antics then as always, the greatest after-party in town can be found at Baila.

There’s a reason why The Swindon Shuffle has survived this long.

STFC bolster squad ahead of pre-season

Richie Wellens has been hard at work adding to the Swindon squad this pre-season with a number of new faces already signed up.

Former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur defender Zeki Fryers has signed on a two-year-deal.

Defender Mathieu Baudry has joined on a one-year contract following his release by Milton Keynes Dons.

Full-back Tyler Reid has joined the club on a two-year deal following his release by Swansea City.

Central midfielder Adam May has signed on a season-long loan from Portsmouth.

Full-back Rob Hunt has joined from Oldham Athletic on a two-year deal.

Jerry Yates (forward) has joined on-loan from Rotherham for the season.

TechSwindon launch Switch On To Swindon event at Nationwide Building Society

A campaign to support and promote Swindon’s growing digi-tech community was launched at a packed business networking event at Nationwide Building Society’s Pipers Way headquarters.

TechSwindon is a Switch On To Swindon (SOTS) branded project which will work with organisations and business groups to run a series of meet-up events for start-ups, micros, SMES and larger companies, which 18

either provide digi-tech products and services or are reliant on it to do business.

The year-long campaign will culminate in a two-day summit in spring 2020 with high-profile speakers from Swindon and around the world, in venues across the town, welcoming up to 1,000 visitors a day.

The aim of the campaign is to work with partners to enhance Swindon’s digitech cluster and showcase

its impressive capability to attract inward investment and a pipeline of additional skilled staff to allow business growth.

DigiTech is a strong and growing industry and Swindon boasts the UK’s 3rd most productive tech sector with over 2,800 companies in Swindon and Wiltshire delivering digi-tech products and services and over 25,000 companies reliant on digi-tech to operate.

Jenny Groves, Chair of Switch On To Swindon said: “The Switch On brand is used to promote Swindon as the destination of choice to live, work and do business and our 600 plus passionate Ambassadors provide their time and support to share these positive messages.

After the last SOTS event, local design company Bravedog won a competition to develop

a Big Idea and they have worked in partnership with Ambassadors and Swindon Borough Council to create the concept of TechSwindon.

A number of businesses have already signed up to support the campaign, and lots more opportunities for business engagement and promotion will be announced over the coming weeks.

Also at the Switch On To Swindon event, over 400 delegates heard Nationwide Building Society’s latest news; a business in the community round up from Swindon 105.5 and were wowed by demonstrations from some of Swindon’s digi-tech community.

Councillor Oliver Donachie, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Economy and Place, said: “Advances in digi-tech are essential to Swindon’s industrial growth in all of its key sectors, particularly advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, business finance and professional services and logistics.

“I am therefore delighted we have launched the TechSwindon campaign, which will keep Swindon at the forefront of this dynamic sector.”

Swindon Borough Council launch Heritage Action Zone Today Swindon Borough Council and Historic England formally launched the town’s Heritage Action Zone (HAZ).

The five-year scheme will bring heritage expertise and £1.6 million of funding from Historic England, who will work with the Council and other partners to revitalise this under-appreciated area of Swindon.

The scheme, led by Swindon Borough Council, will see neglected buildings repaired including the Carriage Works, the Cricketers, and the Health Hydro.

It will also improve footpaths, signage and 20

public spaces to better connect the area to the town centre.

There will be events, exhibitions, publications and tours to raise awareness of Swindon’s history among residents and visitors, and to draw people into the area.

A dedicated Project Officer has already been recruited to lead the HAZ. The first undertaking to get underway this summer will be a review of the existing Conservation Areas and listed buildings and places, and new research to build on our knowledge of the Railway Village. This work will inform all future projects within the HAZ.

Rebecca Barrett, Regional Director for Historic England in the South West, said, “Swindon has so much to be proud of, particularly the legacy of Brunel’s Great Western Railway Works and the village built for its workforce in the 1840s.

Whilst some of its historic buildings have already been beautifully refurbished and brought back to life, there are still a number showing signs of neglect.

“But with investment and imagination they can become places for the people of Swindon to enjoy and help the town’s economy to thrive. We are looking forward to working with Swindon Borough

Council and other partners, including the Mechanics’ Institution Trust, to celebrate Swindon’s remarkable heritage.”

Councillor David Renard, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said, “I am thrilled to see the Heritage Action Zone get off the ground.

Councillor Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Town Centre, said, “The Railway Village is of huge historic significance and we are delighted to have been presented with this brilliant opportunity to make some positive changes to the area.

David Thackray, Chair of the Mechanics Institution Trust and of the HAZ Stakeholder Steering Group, said, “The Mechanics’ Trust is thrilled to see this project go ahead and to be working with Swindon Borough Council as a partner in it.

The Railway Village is special to people from all over Swindon and beyond, and it’s great to see it getting the attention and recognition it deserves.”

Last year, the Railway Village Conservation Area was voted ‘England’s Favourite Conservation Area’ in a competition run by Civic Voice.

We are extremely privileged to have been selected for this scheme by Historic England and I am sure their expertise will enable Swindon’s prized assets to flourish for years to come.”

Swindon Food Collective one year on Swindon’s new food bank is celebrating its first birthday and thanks to Swindon Borough Council’s quick and decisive support is now a “stable functional business” which with continuing day to day support from the community, will operate into the future.

In May 2018 the volunteers at Swindon Foodbank were shocked to be told that it would be closing as support from the Trussell Trust (a national food bank franchise) was being withdrawn and the charity operating the food bank felt unable to continue. Within days a group of volunteers formed a new organisation, 22

Swindon Food Collective (SFC), to take over the operation of the food bank. A grant of £51k from SBC allowed SFC to buy the 2 vans from the previous charity; essential to collecting and distributing food.

This money, along with the continued support of our 65 plus volunteers, allowed SFC to continue operations uninterrupted supporting those in difficulty in the Swindon and District area.

Nearly a year on and the organisation has been granted Charity Status by the Charity Commission, has directly fed 5200 people (28% of which were children), and

has retained virtually all its volunteers.

Andrew Hill, Social Inclusion & Enterprise Manager at Swindon Borough Council said “My direct involvement as an advisor to the Swindon Food Collective board will shortly come to an end.

I am glad that SBC was able to step in and stabilise a dire situation and I wish Swindon Food Collective every success for the future”.

Clare Collier from Swindon Food Collective said “We are eternally grateful to Swindon Borough Council for their rapid interim support. We now need around £35k per year to operate.

Organisations like the Swindon Food Collective work in partnership with the Council to make sure we all play our part in helping each other across the town. I am grateful to all of the volunteers and all the people who make generous donations.”

ARGOS TO CLOSE TOWN CENTRE STORE

Argos is about to leave another gaping hole in the Swindon shopping area when it vacates its unit at the Brunel Shopping Centre. It is understood the Argos stores at Greenbridge and Sainsbury’s Bridgemead

are unaffected in the chains closure plans.

This is another blow to the Town Centre, hot on the heels of the announcement from Arcadia that five of its stores would be closing in the town.

Musical Musings

with Dave Franklin

We kick things off this month with a band that were part of my own formative years having shared stages with such luminaries as Blyth Power and Citizen Fish back in the day.

Folk The System, as the name implies, folk-punked their way around the 90’s underground circuit and have lately resurfaced to have another crack at bringing down the establishment using incendiary language and the key of A minor (that’s a guess, other keys are available) just in the nick of time.

You will find them at The Rolleston on 6th. One of the most interesting of the crop of young indie bands that burst onto the local, and not so local scene a few years ago play The Victoria on 13th.

Basement Club has honed its ability to mix classic pop vibes with effortless indie cool and underpin it with infectious, dance inspired grooves to create the perfect genre-hopping sound for the discerning music aficionado.

The Devon Worley Band is part of the move to return country music to an edgier and slightly more aggressive place.

They take the heart of the genre, add a whole lot of soul, some rock swagger and kick out a dixie style boogie like few others.

If you want to experience the future of country music, be at the Rolleston on 12th.

This month also sees The Swindon Shuffle reach its 13th year.

Between 11th and 14th the venues of Old Town will be hosting almost 50 bands across this long weekend - various genres, various styles, various states of sobriety, a real celebration of the town’s original music community.

One of the highlights of last year’s Shuffle was Slagerij, one of the town’s real success stories and who have taken their contagious poppunk-ska sound all around the world supporting top bands and headlining their own well-received tours.

The Victoria on 20th is the scene for, without question, the most energetic gig in town. Also on 20th at Level 3 you will find a riot of sleazy, nonchalant, alluring, raw and rebellious music courtesy of French punk and garage rock duo Soap Girls. Unforgettable melodies, sing-along choruses, anarchy and a whole lot of skin….

What more could an ageing punk ask for?

Stage Coach July? Already? What happened to the first half of the year? Was I kidnapped by aliens? Was 2019 shortened due to Swindon Council funding cuts?

No matter.

July brings with it the second annual Fuse Festival at Swindon’s Shoebox Theatre (5th to 7th). The Fuse Festival offers performers the opportunity to test out embryonic new material in front of a biddable (and sometimes bemused) audience.

Day 1 brings audience interaction and excessive glitter (is there such a thing as excessive glitter?) with “IMOGENÉ: The Improved Pop Concert” by The Delight Collective (live

music provided by Jack Orcozo Morrison). This is paired with “Plunder” by Slackjaw Theatre Company, a dramatic piece about how we use information and what we’re willing to give up in its place.

I would tell you more but that’s all the information I have on the latter.

Fuse Festival Day 2 features “Isle of Apples” from Palomar Theatre offering ‘fights, laughter and synchronised swimming’ (a fairly average Saturday night in Swindon). Meanwhile “Fish Don’t Bleed”, by solo performance artist and skilled clown Eloina, is an autobiographical coming-ofage piece about menstruation and mermaids. But no singing Jamaican crabs.

Finally, we come to Day 3’s climactic double-header: “Sex-Ed Cabaret” by Chaotic Neutral Theatre Company, brings a sex educational extravaganza filled with party games, dance moves and yet more glitter.

And the Fuse ends with “Stain” by WhatNot Theatre Company.

This is a physical theatre performance about the perils of fast fashion and clothing addiction. As anyone who knows me will tell you I’m a martyr to both.

Three nights of six shows where nobody knows what might happen next, least of all the performers. A discounted Full Festival Pass is also available if your heart can stand it. Why not give it a try?
