Bike riding is one of my favourite things to do and I was elated (and determined) to finally teach my children to ride a bike.

And while they were scooting and learning to balance on two wheels, I was researching some awesome bike tour companies and itineraries I just had to share with you.

COUNTRIES LEADING THE WAY WITH #TOURISMPLEDGE Iceland The Icelandic Pledge was introduced in 2018 and already 75,000 people have taken the pledge to be a responsible traveller.

It calls on travellers to promise to care for land, sea and nature and tread lightly, consideration of others, respect of culture and ultimately travelling with 'an open heart and mind'. Palau The Palau Pledge was the first nation to change its immigration laws and simply ask travellers to take a pledge and 'act in an ecologically responsible way on the island, for the sake of Palau's children and future generations'. A TRIP ON TWO WHEELS

I vividly remember the day I bought my first bike.

Years later, I learned how heavy and clunky I was so excited! I was around 16 at the time and I had saved a few hundred dollars from working casual shifts after school. I remember feeling pumped as I headed to my local bike store to pick out the bike of my dreams. A silver ‘Maverick' wannabe mountain bike, and it looked cool!

I LOVED THAT BIKE AND RODE IT EVERYWHERE!

Zipping down to my local library with my back pack of books, water bottle in place and looking the part with my cap firmly placed under my helmet. I would even take it on the train to Uni and into town, feeling so adventurous.

my Maverick was, but I loved it nonetheless.

I rode that bike for a few years and kept it for almost 20 years stored in the garage. I later sold it for $30, feeling content it was going to a good home and another person planing to use it to commute to work.

A few years later with more dollars in my pocket, I upgraded to an entry level matt black Scott bike with full determination to become a mountain bike rider.

I did one jump off a rock, fell and sadly my Scott bike laid dormant in the garage for years.

BUT I’M PLEASED TO SAY THE BIKE IS BACK!

With tyres pumped and brakes checked, I’m once again zipping down the streets with my backpack on and grabbing the train into the city (Sydney, you need bike friendly train carriages please).

But now I 'm excited to be bike riding with my children, who enjoy it as much as I do.

We are zipping around the park in tandem and my secret ploy to finally plan our bike family holiday is under way!

For many of us, bike riding was something we learned as children and either still do today or perhaps wished we were still doing.

The great thing is bike riding has so many benefits for us and the environment. It’s good for our health, it’s fun, minimal cost and it’s pollution free.

According to Bike Radar, studies have shown that ‘riding a bike also makes people happier’.

Which explains why so many of us have made the switch from cars to bikes. Zipping through traffic is much better than sitting in your car in traffic.

Fold it, pack it but always carry an extra bag to use for carrying groceries, beach towels, snacks and any responsible souvenirs purchased to bring home.
