easy. I LOVE SUMMER! There is something so magical about it all. I think growing up by the

beach and spending the last 5 years

working at camp contribute to how I feel about this season. Basking in the sun, rocking the salty beach hair

my favorite

(even if it's from a bottle), and eating lots of watermelon are on my daily to-do lists. The sunshine seems happier and life is a little more

care-free. Most of my summer "vacations" were going to camp or Virginia to spend a week with grandparents. I have so many great memories from those trips. But I would have to say, my favorite summer vacation was my honeymoon. We went to an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. It was the BEST. I hope you enjoy my first full edit and a little taste of summer.

Enjoy!! Leann

Hi! Isn t the summer sun bright and refreshing? I love it. It s been a little over six months since my husband and I took our 9 year old son to an urgent care center with what we thought was a sinus infection. Within an hour he was rushed to the nearest hospital for a blood transfusion. Only minutes after that I found myself sitting across from doctor in a private conference room where the word leukemia rolled out of his mouth slowly and carefully. Within the next few weeks I slept on a cold itchy hospital couch next to a window that blocked me from the crisp January wind while my son began daily chemotherapy treatments. I would sit and pray and think about summer. Warm glorious summer. 2015 has been a hurricane of emotions and challenges but the bright summer sunshine comes up every morning to remind me that the cold dark days don t last forever. Our sweet Dean is responding well to treatments and is resuming somewhat normal kid activity in between chemo days. He says he s fighting leukemia like a ninja. Thanks to our faithful Sunshine Mag readers for hanging with us while we get through this. Have a great summer!

Kortni Jeane

Swimmers

K

ortni Jeane started making suits for friends in High School, continued it as a hobby through college and has now turned it into a successful business. With unlimited options to mix n' match you can create a swimsuit that is perfect for you and your body type. Kortni Jeane wants to help you create the suit of your dreams, a suit unique to you. You can find the perfect suit for you and the whole family!

Describe your business: We are a swimwear company for the everyday girl. We want every girl to feel confident and comfortable in a swimsuit. We are here to help you create a suit that is unique to you and your personality. No worries about matching your buddies at the pool party, out on the lake, or wherever your suit takes you. With unlimited options to mix n' match, you can create a suit that is perfect for you and your body type! So go ahead, get lost in the fun of creating the swimmer of your dreams!

How did you get started? I, Kortni, guinea-pigged a swimsuit sewing class my senior year of high school and made my very first swimsuit. All my friends and family wanted the suit so I made them for friends and family for fun. Before you know it, complete strangers were showing up at my doorstep wanting a suit of their own. I went to college shortly after that and kept making suits for some extra cash and as a hobby. It wasn't till after I graduated that I decided to pursue my swimmers and make it into a company!

What’s behind the name? Nothing better then naming things after yourself! Am I right or am I right? bahaha. My parents names all of my siblings starting with K and I lucked out with the unique spelling, which rocks and my middle name, Jeane, comes from my grandma who I never had the pleasure of meeting but she inspires me daily.

What do you love about your work? I love seeing girls who haven't dared wear a swimsuit in public for years sitting on the beach, boating at the lake, pool lounging with friends looking beautiful and feeling confident.

What is the most challenging part of your work? Keeping everyone happy and putting on a smile while I do it, haha. But seriously, I want every customer to have a good experience and that is much harder then you could ever imagine.

this is Kortni wearing her own swimmers. BONUS: that;s her husband wearing her swimmers too! True love.

follow on ins t a g r a m : @kortn ijean e

Describe your workspace/office: Small Business, small budget. We all work out of my tiny house basement. Although we do have a warehouse for all our swimmers where our shippers send everything out to our wonderful customers, all our business is run our of a little basement but it sure is a good time!

What keeps you inspired? This is always the hardest question I get because I feel like everyday life is constantly inspiring me.

What are your most popular products? Women's suits are my top sellers although we do have mens and kids. Our sweetheart peplum top is our most popular style next to our highwaisted bottoms.

How do you spend your days off? Day off? Please tell me what this is!

Contradiction Clothing

K

at Lim is the owner and designer of Contradiction Clothing.

An Alternative lifestyle brand dedicated to making handmade and one-of-a-kind items for the completely unique individual. Based in St. Simons Island, Kat is definately inspired by her surroundings. Her pieces have a bohemian, carefree feel. Wearing one of her pieces will instantly make you want to go to the beach. Contradiction accessories are perfect for the summer and every other season for that matter.

Describe your business:

How did you get started?

Contradiction is an alternative bohemian lifestyle brand dedicated to making handmade and one-of-kind items for the completely unique individual. It is currently focused around jewelry and accessories, but apparel is going to soon be our forefront once I perfect the fits. Everyone deserves something entirely their own - there's a sense of pride that comes along with having an item that you know absolutely no one else has. I'm also putting a lot of effort into custom work and collaborations - I'm currently working on the jewelry for two bridal parties, which I feel so humbled that brides want to include my work in their special day!

EDITOR"S PICK: "love the layers and the color combination."

30

SUNSHINE Issue No. 9

After receiving my Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design from Georgia Southern University in May of 2013, I moved to Downtown Savannah where I became an intern for an amazing local Savannah designer and a Stylist at a creative boutique. Both of the women I was working for helped me realize that being a young, successful business woman was more than obtainable for me if I was dedicated to something I truly believed in. I decided I wanted to take the plunge and start working towards my own dream rather than spending my time helping someone else achieve theirs. So in the living room of my unbelievably small apartment, I started making bohemian clothing samples for myself and my friend's little girls, and then eventually ventured into jewelry. The growing interest on social media helped drive me to make it all official with a company name - and that's how Contradiction began.

What’s behind the name? I've never really been a person that can completely blend and fit in - I've always felt different. As a child, I embraced this. As a teenage girl, I feared it. Growing up and going to school in small towns only strengthened that fear, making me constantly try to hide traits about myself that were unique, or participating in social activities that I could care less about. This only made me feel even more lost in the crowd, like my identity wasn't my own, but what people wanted me to be and how they wanted me to feel. Around this time I began Contradiction. I was tired of not speaking my mind anymore and wanted my business name to represent the idea that you don't need to fit into a specific mold, style, clique or stereotype to be accepted. My mind changes every single day and I wanted my company to allow for that type of unexpected variety. I think there's something relatable and universal about the desire to just be accepted for who you truly are, no matter what. A "Contrarian" is defined as someone who opposes and rejects popular opinion - a quality that I believe is not nearly praised enough. "Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes." - Walt Whitman

"Everyone deserves something entirely their own." What do you love about your work? Now that I've relocated back to my hometown of St. Simons Island, I'm participating constantly in local craft shows and getting the chance to interact directly with consumers. By putting myself in these markets, I'm realizing that my work doesn't directly attract one type of person - which I love. I've never truly identified with one style and I want my work to reflect that. Different age groups and genders, people from completely contrasting cultures and lifestyles all stop in to talk to me about my process. Everyone continues to offer me the kindest words of adoration and encouragement towards my work and its uniqueness, which only strengthens my desire to keep going.

What is the most challenging part of your work? Since starting Contradiction, I have been doing every single thing myself - something most people don't realize. I built my entire website, do all of my own photography, editing, and social media, I create all of my own original graphic designs, build all of my displays, repurpose materials, and design and construct jewelry, patterns and clothing. It can be overwhelming at times, mostly because I have so many ideas on what I'd like to be producing, but the whole process takes so much longer when it's only one person. Some necklaces can take days to make because of how much hand wire wrapping is involved. Eventually I'll have a few extra hands on the team to help fill in some gaps, but until then it'll just be little ol' me. 31

Describe your workspace/office: I just got my very first full studio here on St. Simons Island, something I am extremely excited about. For the past year and a half or so, I've been creating and working on everything in my living room, so this is a big upgrade. I've got great concrete floors, massive welcoming windows and different stations for all of my projects. I also have a wild variety of animal heads and quotes from my favorite characters and authors on the walls, and unique repurposed furniture like vintage sewing machines and clothing racks. I want the studio to feel interesting and inviting - each element has a story and a life of its own.

What keeps you inspired? Since I am not mass producing any jewelry styles at this point, I'm finding myself most inspired by the freedom to find new materials and just making whatever I want. Being on the Coast, I've been lucky enough to find the coolest natural elements to work with, which only makes my work that much more special with these locally sourced components.

What are your most popular products? Any pieces with natural stones like Quartz crystal points, Jasper, Druzy or Agate slices are popular among all types of people. For the bold and brave jewelry wearer, our Gypsy coin necklaces make the perfect statement piece to add to the wardrobe. If you're a bit more into Minimalist style jewelry, you can never go wrong with our wire wrapped Porcupine Quill.

32

SUNSHINE Issue No. 9

How do you spend your days off? I love being 5 minutes away from the Ocean - the beach is a truly majestic place and I would be there all day, every day if I could. I also love to cook, spend time playing with my Husky, Stark, playing my ukulele and watching way too much Netflix. I'm a bit of a film/TV nerd - I love to analyze character development and screen plays, and can become mildly obsessed over costuming detail work. I'd ultimately love to become a Costume Designer for film!

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? "Comparison is the thief of joy." Being a designer in such an ever changing industry, it's hard not to get blinded and distracted by what others are creating and sharing via social media. There are so many beautiful and talented minds out there and comparing your own work to someone else's can truly crush your spirit. I have to continuously remind myself to take everything I see as inspiration and admiration, not competition.

her packaging is as creative as the jewlery that comes with it.

traveling with The Southern Trunk

"The Southern Trunk is a lifestyle blog that we created to share our life experiences, things we love, our photography and travels. It has really morphed into a space where we can share and reflect in somewhat of a public journal." -Ian and Victoria Schneider

46

SUNSHINE Issue No. 9

How did you get started?

What do you love about your work?

We both have had so much passion for marketing, photography and graphic design that we decided to compile all of those things into a project that we thought could inspire others. The idea turned into something that we spent countless hours and late nights on until we finally launched. Ian built the site, while I worked on the content creation and visuals. Together we shoot photography and the blog is a place we could showcase it. A lot of people feel that a photography site should be a different site completely from a lifestyle blog, but we disagree. Since our goal is to only shoot lifestyle as opposed to weddings, a lifestyle blog is a perfect place to feature that.

We both love being able to work with each other. Being a team can be challenging, but it is also so rewarding. Secondly, I love seeing how the blog has impacted others in a positive way. It’s so encouraging to have someone tell us they read our post and how it inspired them.

What's behind the name? Victoria - When I was a little girl, I remember playing in my parents’ bedroom and being mesmerized at the huge trunk at the foot of their bed. Hundreds of love letters between her and my dad lined the bottom. Along with the letters were my first ballet shoes, a stuffed animal from when her and my dad were dating, pictures of my sister and I from when we were babies and special gifts that my mom had kept sacred over the years. It was magical. Like you were opening up a real life story book. That is why we called it The Southern Trunk. We wanted to share with you not only what is in our “trunk,” but what is in the “trunk” of others. Sometimes a trunk comes in the form of pictures that capture special memories and moments that slip away too quickly. Or sometimes it comes in the form of a trunk stamped with all your travels and experiences in growing and going somewhere new.

What keeps you inspired? Ian – There are a lot of things that inspire me and they’re constantly changing based on where I am in life. I want to keep growing and learning, so different people and things help me do that. Right now, there’s a couple of film makers and photographers I follow, Casey Neistat and Ben Brown, that inspire me. I appreciate Ben’s photography style and Casey’s outlook/principles on storytelling through videos, images and life. Victoria – As cliché as it is, I love Pinterest. It is like taking all the magazines in the world and organizing them on your iPad. Oh and shopping! There is something about shopping – the patterns, the fabric and the lines that really can inspire you in lots of areas.

47

Favorite place you have traveled to so far? Ian - California, hands down. I was born in Laguna Beach, but didn’t live there long enough to call myself a native. On our trip back there, I’m sure I had a smile on my face the whole time because everything felt like home and I loved it all. Victoria - It is a hard tie between Italy and California. Italy was a dream come true for me. I never imagined myself getting to go there and see everything I did. It helped that it met all my expectations. California was special because I know it was Ian's favorite trip and it’s by far my favorite state. It was the ultimate road trip with our best friends. It will be hard to top it.

How do you decide on a location? Ian - I’m typically up for anything. I have a list of places I want to go before I die, but usually Victoria see’s something, we talk about it together and then we immediately start planning. The two trips I’m waiting on right now are New Zealand and Cape Town... Victoria - Ian and I usually alternate on picking a place. Our list of places we want to go is almost the same so we usually are both equally as excited about the next trip. I think another big factor is that we like to alternate between relaxing and busy trips. New York, Ireland, Italy and California were all places where we were moving the whole time and trying to see everything we could in a week or two. Florida and our weekend trips are usually meant to getaway and really relax together. We make plans, but were not moving as much.

48

SUNSHINE Issue No. 9

The best part about traveling with your significant other? Ian- We both have equal parts planning and relaxing. It’s easy to get stressed traveling, especially internationally, but Victoria and I complement each other well in regards to how we handle situations. It brings me so much joy to see these places, but they wouldn’t be worth it without her. There’s something about traveling with Victoria that brings me greater joy than experiencing anything else without her. Victoria - For me, it’s definitely the amount of time we get to spend together, plus experiencing the world side-by-side. I joke that when we travel, we get to eat all three meals together. We both work full time outside of TST, so spending quality time with each other in large doses like that is really a treat. I couldn't really imagine traveling without Ian. Those memories and things we see are not things I would want to see without him.

Do you prefer to travel alone or with friends? Ian - I love both. There’s times when I want it to be just Victoria and I, but I also love traveling with close friends. Traveling with others can be a gamble though. It’s adding more personalities, opinions, preferences, etc. into somewhere that might be unknown, so it can be stressful. Luckily for us, everybody we have traveled with so far has had similar styles and preferences as us so I would travel anywhere in the world with them again in a heartbeat. Victoria - There is time for both. Traveling with friends is so much fun because it’s like one big party, but there are some trips that I would rather leave for just Ian and I to experience.

Best advice you can give on packing for vacation?

The top 3 (up to 5) moments of your trip to California:

Ian - Pack light and always bring a camera, but don’t always shoot everything. Every trip we go on, I forget something. It appears to be inevitable. I don’t let it stress me out because I can always pick things up wherever we’re going. I love documenting our lives through photos. I relive moments over and over again just by looking at them. There are times though when we travel and we don’t take pictures of something amazing that we’re experiencing. In those moments, we like to enjoy them together, without sharing with the rest of the world. It makes them that much more special.

Ian –

Victoria - You DO NOT need heels in Europe. That was the biggest mistake I made. The cobblestone streets are not your friends. Another important thing is wearing one thing for each day. I know a lot of people like to layer and reuse clothes, but I am not a huge fan. I will re-wear jeans or pants but bring one outfit for every day. I typically plan what I will wear each day in advance so that I only pack what I need. I also try to make sure every place we are staying has a hair dryer so that I keep my primping tools to a minimum.

1. Oh man… Laguna Beach. Victoria and I walked down the strips on the cliffs for hours. It just felt like home. I had an overwhelming peace there with her. It was the first time I had been back to the gazebo my parents got married in 27 years prior. We just sat in that place for hours, staring at the ocean. It was all so nostalgic for me. 2. Big Sur - The cliffs and drive up the PAC 1 are something I’ll always remember. We drove through Big Sur at night but woke up early the next morning to go back to Bixby Bridge and it was unbelievable. The lighting was spectacular and those are still some of my favorite pictures out of all the trips we’ve been on. 3. Napa Valley - We visited a winery that day in Napa. It was located up a remote mountain. The people there were extremely nice and everything about that day was amazing. Victoria 1. Big Sur. Seeing it at sunrise and sunset. It’s hands down the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. 2. Being able to experience Laguna Beach. It is where Ian's parents got married and lived with him when he was a baby. I would move there in a heartbeat. 3. Driving up the Hollywood hill and lusting over the homes.

Must see(s) on the west coast: Laguna Beach, Malibu, Big Sur and San Diego. I loved San Francisco too, but what I love about Southern California is that it is just so laid back and beautiful. From the views to the people, I’ll probably live out there one day.

These bars taste amazing and they are packed with healthy ingredients. You do not have to sacrifice health when traveling. Pack a few of these in your bag to munch on. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt. 7. Trader Joes Shea Butter Hand Cream. If you’re anything like me, you lather on hand sanitizer too frequently. This hand cream is perfect for keeping your skin nourished. Find it at your local Trader Joes.
