CHILDREN'S CLOTHING

A CHAT WITH THE DESIGNER BEHIND A HIGH END BRAND FOR SMALL FASHIONISTAS

D

esigner, Laura Eckerman, tells us, "Velveteen is more than just a clothing collection to me, it’s a little universe where I try to encourage children to feel free and inspired by sounds, colors and textures. I want to inspire them to be brave enough to meet the world with a sense of curiosity."

DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND

Velveteen is about timeless style. It is grounded in a vision of a childhood spent exploring hidden pathways with friends, sharing secrets, and building fond memories. From a design perspective, I’m passionate about the magical balance between beautiful fabrics that are comfortable and soft, colors that are strong and sophisticated, and classic silhouettes that bring everything together.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

After graduating from school, I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to study textile technology and design. Then I went back to Los Angeles to finish a business degree. Fashion has always been a key career focus for me. When the opportunity arose to find our own production for Velveteen, I jumped at it (despite being 8 months pregnant with my second child at the time). Opportunities don’t often come at the most convenient moment in life, but I firmly believe that you need to take them when they present themselves.

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME?

The name was something that I had in mind long before I ever actually knew that I’d be able to pull off starting the brand. I wanted something that conveyed the whimsical and imaginative aspect of childhood without sounding childish. The Velveteen Rabbit was one of my favorite

illustrated books as a child, and the imagery and memories of my father reading it to me at bedtime has always stayed with me. I still have my father’s copy of the tattered old book sitting on my shelf. The fact that velveteen is also a type of velvet fabric was also interesting because it represented the important role that textiles play in the line. I also just thought the name had a beautiful ring to it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR WORK?

It’s so hard to say, because I'm busy working on literally every aspect of the business. Of course, I love the design process. I love to really build the story of a collection, and then watch it come together. The process of creating something can be truly humbling. I’d also have to say that meeting and collaborating with some of the amazing creative minds we work with is also one of the most fun aspects of what I do. To sit amongst peers and discuss the many common challenges and inspirations we share creates a strong sense of camaraderie within children’s design that might not be so prevalent in womenswear.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?

I think being an entrepreneur in any industry is challenging. Building something from scratch often means that you’re wearing multiple hats, and that you might not have all the critical skill sets your business needs to succeed. I must give credit to my parents for insisting that I return to school and finish a business degree after my design studies.

The business experience was a huge value as Velveteen has grown. It’s helped me stay focused on doing what is needed to ensure that we continue to grow.

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED?

Everything! My brain is ridiculously overflowing with ideas and inspirations! My only problem is that there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything! From browsing my favorite design blogs or illustration artists to watching how children interact with the world around them.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE.

It’s a bit of a construction site at the moment because we’re shifting our studio into our first official space this week. Until now, I was fortunate enough to have a small space in the front of our flat where my team and I could work whilst I kept a close eye on the children’s daily activities. Now that they’re both in school and Velveteen has officially outgrown our little space, I’m really looking forward to having a separate studio so my brain can stay focused on Velveteen instead of wondering when the next studio raid will be led by my 2-year-old!

DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK?

Music is such an important part of my life. It is a means of managing stress, and a source of inspiration. Most of my collections begin with a certain mood or feeling inspired by the music I’m into at the moment. I’m constantly running through a little mock catwalk in my head for each collection, and the music really plays into the mood I want for the collection. We’ve done a few behind the scenes videos that are up on the website now and I was so pleased with how the

18 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

music really pulled it all together. It’s the icing on the cake that can either make or break my vision! I go through very distinct phases but some of my “go-to” artists for the studio include Mayer Hawthorne, Mina Tindle, Thomas Dybdhal, Feist and always a little Morcheeba. It’s a very eclectic mix but they’re all really inspiring for different reasons.

WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

To take the opportunities that are presented and never to worry about success, just worry about growing from your experiences and doing the absolute best job you can do. To me, this really boils down to a little mantra that I say every morning with my daughter on the way to school, “Today we’re going to be strong, smart and kind." I truly believe that it’s the job of the adults in this world to encourage all children to be stronger, smarter and more compassionate than the generation before them.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FUTURE DESIGNERS AND ENTREPRENEURS?

My advice is a bit contradictory in that I would say you have to be both the ridiculously optimistic dreamer who reaches only for the stars and refuses to think small (you must lead by inspiring those around you to dream and be bigger than they are), but you also have to ground yourself in the realities of what is achievable at each stage of growth. The only real key to success is hard work and perseverance.

This family costume idea is simple and perfect for any fall festivities on your calendar. Leann made her headband, baby Fin's headband, and baby Fin's vest all out of the same tshirt. She added beads and feathers from her craft stash for embellishment. She bought a plain white onesie and painted arrows on it for baby Fin's shirt, and printed a sheriff's badge on cardstock for her hubby's shirt.

INGREDIENTS: FOR THE CRUST: 1¼ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar ½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into half inch cubes) 2-4 tablespoons cold water

FOR THE FILLING: 1 cup half and half ¼ cup unsalted butter 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate-chopped 1½ cups sugar ¾ cup cocoa powder ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt 2 eggs 3 egg yolks

TO MAKE THE CRUST: In a large bowl whisk together flour, sugar and salt. Add butter and mix with a fork until it starts to look like a coarse meal. Add 1 tablespoon of water at a time and continue mixing until a dough forms. Wrap the dough with the plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours. Lightly grease 9-inch pie plate and preheat oven to 350 F. Take the dough from refrigerator and roll out on a lightly floured work surface into a circle about 1 inch thick. Transfer the dough to a pie plate and trim excess of a dough from edges.

TO MAKE THE FILLING: In a bowl whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt. Combine in a sauce pan: half and half, butter, and chocolate. Stir over a medium-low heat until it smooth. Let it cool a few minutes before you add it over dry ingredients and eggs. Add eggs, egg yolks, and chocolate mixture into dry ingredients and stir until well combined Transfer filling to pie crust in pan. Bake 45 to 50 minutes (until the center is set and the edges start to crack) Cool 10-15 minutes before serving.

he Strawberry Patch is an outdoor marketplace filled to the brim with handmade, vintage, and indie craft goods. You'll find everything from soaps and pottery to antiques, chippy furniture, custom lighting, clothing, jewelry, and a wide variety of eclectic vintage finds. The Strawberry Patch takes great pride in bringing the Barn Sale trend to Tennessee. It all started in 2009 in a tiny back yard in Lafayette, TN. In 2011, after a few growing pains, the event was moved to Starlite Farm. Starlite is a family owned farm nestled on the Cumberland River.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? In 2003, after quitting my full time job as an Internal Affairs Investigator in the State Prison System to be a stay-at-home mom, I started The Strawberry Patch. It was a creative way to free my mind from the demands of a newborn and 18 month old. I began making children’s clothing, diaper bags, baby blankets, and appliquÊd goods. My handmade goods were sold in several stores across Middle Tennessee. Six years later, I was itching to try something new. I knew I did not want the demands of a brick and mortar with three babies at home, but I yearned to sell things. After some research, I found some information about the "Barn Sale" trend in the Northwest. I visited the Country Living Fair in Ohio where I

34 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

met Gina Bishop. Gina encouraged me to press on with my dream, and that's exactly what I did. I went home and hosted my first Barn Sale in a tiny building/barn in my back yard. I think I had 7 vendors and 50 shoppers at my first event. We were tickled pink! In the beginning, I had a hard time teaching people what Barn Sales were all about. Slowly, the concept began to catch on and the shoppers were hooked.

36 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? After my divorce in 2011, I had to sell my home. I had not worked outside the home in eight years, so I found myself struggling to find a way to support myself and my 3 children. What is so obvious now, wasn’t so obvious then. I moved the event to Starlite Farm, and tripled my number of vendors. I was afraid that if I grew too fast, I might fail. However, the first sale at the farm proved to be extremely successful

and suggested that I would get to proceed on with my dream job of creating and hosting Barn Sales.

style wonderland, full of inspiration and laughter.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR WORK?

The most challenging thing about hosting The Strawberry Patch is trying to set myself apart from all the others. When I first started hosting barn sales, there was no competition, so I was inherently different. Within the past year, Tennessee has become a mecca for barn sales.

My favorite thing about hosting The Strawberry Patch Barn Sale is the magic that happens during the weekend of the event‌The combined efforst of the artisans, stylists, musicians, and food vendors create a dreamy farm-

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?

37

38 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

Finding a unique set of vendors that carefully select the shows they participate in (and also that haven’t saturated themselves in this area) has become more and more challenging. My inner desire to be different, stand alone, and be an inspiration to others has become a daily battle. I'll do something one way, and when I see someone else doing it I'll move on to something else. This can be exhausting, but it keeps me on my toes and keeps the competitiveness alive. My events are smaller than most because I would rather be tiny and mighty than big and typical.

ANY INTERESTING STORIES FROM THE STRAWBERRY PATCH? At our Spring Sale 2013, a blowing monsoon came through and literally destroyed tons of merchandise. Some of the vendors' booths were floating, about 10 shoppers got stuck in the field, and it was freezing. I went into the shed and just cried (which is funny now). I didn’t know what to do. Mark Galant, a wonderful musician, saved the day by playing all day long. It made us forget how nasty it was. Despite all this, we had over 400 shoppers!

IMAGINATION AND WHIMSY FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES

POTLIGHT 43

Jessica Near is the owner and artist

behind Opposite of Far, an Indiana based handmade business that creates unique and high quality open-ended toys. Specifically, Opposite of Far makes felt animal masks and tails for the imaginative child! At Opposite of Far, we believe in encouraging play + expanding imaginations of ALL ages!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? This all started out as a dream, as all handmade businesses do. After undergoing emergency back surgery in 2010, I was forced to stop working for several months, A second surgery kept me home and out of work even longer, I struggled with my identity and dwindling work possibilities. It became clear that going back to my previous profession as a preschool teacher or even working part-time as a nanny would be impossible with the high levels of pain in my back. I spent those months in bed sketching and dreaming big. It didn't take long before I started thinking seriously about making my handmade business dream a reality. I took the leap by opening my Etsy shop in January of 2011. I also applied for a few local craft shows. Before I knew it, Opposite of Far was real and prosperous thing! I was living my dream! What started out as a business based on handmade plush dolls and animals quickly turned into a busy mask making business! In the Fall of 2011, I created a fox and owl mask as accessories for the dolls I was making. I then added child sized masks to match the doll masks. Three days after posting the child

42 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

sized masks, I realized they were going to be a huge hit! Since then, I have expanded my designs from 2 (the fox and owl) to over 50 different designs! The plush dolls and animals have stepped out of the spotlight and my true passion really is creating animal masks. An unexpected surprise! I love designing new masks, and take pride in sewing every single animal mask myself! But my absolute favorite thing about this job is seeing photos of kids using Opposite of Far Masks + Tails to engage their little imaginations. It's truly magic!

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? "Opposite of Far" is something my husband would say when people misunderstood his last name. "Near, You know, like 'the opposite of far.'" Once I took his name, I found it hilarious how often I actually had to use this phrase to "spell" my name to people! When I was thinking about what to call my new business, I knew Opposite of Far was the perfect fit. I love witnessing the "ah-ha" moment when people "get" my business name for the first time. Sometimes LONG after we've been acquainted!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR WORK? I love designing new masks! The choices for new animals are endless, so I always have pages and pages of new masks sketched out just waiting to be pieced together in felt! Working with other makers has been a surprising perk to starting Opposite of Far. I have loved collaborating with other artists. it's really humbling to learn I've inspired someone to create something new!

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR WORK? The most challenging part of my job/work has been trying to do it all and feeling completely overwhelmed and stressed. I've been trying to practice the mantra "I can do anything, but not everything." In doing so, I have had to learn to let go and delegate. Hiring help has been by far the hardest decision, but also the smartest decision I've made for my business.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. I moved out of my home office/studio and into a larger, brighter studio in November of 2013. I made the move after realizing every single room in my small home was holding some part of Opposite of Far. There were products, printed orders, stock, and supplies everywhere. I had hired my friend to help part time, but I had no place for her to sit! My new studio is only 5 minutes from home located in an old school building. It's large and bright and most of all, functional! When I signed the lease, the whole room was painted a light purple shade. The first thing we did was paint everything white. The room looked twice as big! I wanted a clean and bright backdrop for all the colors I would be adding with my bolts of felt, photos, props and of course the masks and tails that would eventually pile up everywhere!

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? Animals, children, books, color, other artists, trends, and seasons. I feel inspired constantly! I love my customers and seeing their happy, masked kiddos in photos

43

reminds me daily why I do this! I love Sharon Montrose and National Geographic for animal photography. I always use real animals when creating a new mask. I want my masks to be friendly to children, but also recognizable and represent to what the animal actually looks like (rather than a cartoon version of the animal). I want to educate children about animals by piquing their interest so they want to learn more

44 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

about each animal they pretend to be when they slip on a mask!

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? The Fox was #1 for the first 3 years I was making masks with the Owl and Raccoon coming in close behind. Now my most popular masks & tails are the Cat, Wolf, Unicorn, Lion, and Tiger. It's fun to see what is trending and what people love the most!

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS OFF? I'm usually ALWAYS working, especially this time of year! When I do get a chance to take a break, I spend my time with my husband & pets at home. We enjoy the company of our close friends whenever we can. We'll get together with friends and out to eat, see a movie, or play board games. At least once a month, I visit my mom, sister, niece and extended family in Cincinnati. I love to read, but it's been too long since I finished a book!

WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? The best advice I've been given (I shared above) You can do anything, but not everything. I have those words printed and hanging above my desk in my studio to remind me daily. I want to do everything! I have a hard time saying no and setting boundaries for myself when it comes to work, so this is a great message to keep close by!
