Anonymous donor gives Wichita State $5 million for new business school building BY ANDREW LINNABARY

A $5 million pledge has been committed toward a new school of business building at Wichita State, a university news release said. The pledge, which came from a donor who wished to remain anonymous, puts the total private donations toward the building at $26.7 million, the release said. WSU’s goal was to have at least $25 million of the $50 million goal come from private donors. A new home for the W. Frank

Barton School of Business is the top priority of the WSU Foundation’s Shock the World campaign, the release said. The new building will replace Clinton Hall, built in 1970, and will be located on the Innovation Campus. The building will be named Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall, in recognition of the Woolseys’ $10 million donation to the project earlier this year. The WSU Foundation will continue to seek out campus and community partners to donate to the project, the release said.

Man shot at Fairmount Park early Saturday morning, not cooperating with investigation, Wichita police say

BY JENNA FARHAT

Police say a man was shot at Fairmount Park early Saturday morning. The park is just south of Wichita State’s campus across 17th Street. At around 3 a.m. Wichita police officers arrived to Fairmount Park where they found multiple shell casings. Nearly 10 minutes later, police say a 24-year-old man arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound to his

leg. Wichita police believe the man was shot at Fairmount Park. Wichita Police Department’s Public Information Officer Charley Davidson said the incident was not random and the man who was shot is not cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Wichita police ask that anyone with information on the incident call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or Wichita Police Department detectives at 316-268-4407.

Police: Nothing about Heskett incident rises to threat of human trafficking BY ANDREW LINNABARY

After making the public aware of an alleged human trafficking attempt that took place Thursday outside of the Heskett Center, WSU police said Friday there was nothing about the event that “rises to the idea of there being a credible threat (of human trafficking).” The department’s initial social media post described a woman approaching young women “fairly aggressively” outside the Heskett Center tennis courts. She then asked the women she approached about joining a Bible study class. There was also a report of a woman approaching students and asking them to join a Bible study on August 20 at Shocker Hall, posted in the police department’s crime log. Bob Hinshaw, interim police chief, said there are five open cases about similar Bible study solicitations. WSU police became aware of Thursday’s alleged trafficking attempts via social media reports from Wichita State students. Hinshaw said to KWCH, who followed up after reporting by The Sunflower, that the department’s post “was meant to encourage students to be proactive,” but emphasized that they currently have no proof that human trafficking was actually attempted. Sexual exploitation and human trafficking can be reported to the WSU police at 978-3450.
