WSU awards $10.4 million construction contract to company founded by Regent, run by son
Miller wins thriller

Wichita State has awarded a $10.4 million contract to Hutton Construction to build a new Student-Athlete Success Center on campus and renovate administrative offices in Charles Koch Arena. Hutton Construction was founded by Mark Hutton, a member of the Kansas Board of Regents. His son, Ben Hutton, is the company’s CEO. Groundbreaking on the two-story, 36,000-square-foot Student-Athlete Success Center is expected to take place in June, with an estimated completion date of July 2020, according to a university release. The facility, which will be located just south of Koch Arena, will be “devoted to the academic and athletic development of students in WSU’s sports programs.” The project is funded entirely through private donations raised by WSU Athletics and the WSU Foundation. Hutton Construction got the nod over five other companies that presented proposals for the project last month, the release said. Mark Hutton, who was appointed to the board of regents in 2018 by then-Gov. Jeff Colyer, founded Hutton Construction in 1992. His son took over as president in 2010 and became CEO in 2016. Mark Hutton retains the title CEO emeritus and is a 7% owner of the company, according to a statement of substantial interest filed with the secretary of state’s office when he was appointed to the board of regents. This is Hutton Construction’s first job at WSU. The company recently renovated and made a large-scale addition to Koch Industries. Before his appointment to the board, Hutton served as a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives from 2013-2017.

ichita State’s student body elected Kitrina Miller to be student body president for the 62nd session of the Student Government Association. Michael Bearth will serve as vice president. Miller and Bearth’s ticket, Together We Can, won by 26 votes over Isaac Rivera and Anisia Brumley’s Perpetual ticket. Out of the more than 12,000 eligible student voters, 16.2% voted in the election. Together We Can received 32.8% of the vote, defeating three other tickets. Perpetual
received 31.2% of the vote, All Voices Heard received 19.8%, and Unity Through Diversity received 14.4%. “I’m extremely excited, and honestly surprised,” Miller said after the announcement. “I’m still processing at this moment.” Miller and Bearth said their priorities for next year are expanding incentive and benefit programs, increasing the availability of student services, and ensuring transparent communication in SGA. “Our main concern is correcting SGA and some of the faults we’ve noted throughout our
involvement,” Bearth said. One of those faults, Bearth said, is a trend of students applying to be senators in order to improve their resume. He said the issue has at least partially been fixed through this year’s senatorial elections. “The team that has been elected by the students [is] dedicated to the task,” Bearth said. Student Body President Shelby Rowell said she was pleased to see an increase in voter turnout compared to last year, citing a more competitive race. SEE TOGETHER WE CAN PAGE 3

‘I’m not done rebelling’ Meet Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn, punk rock School of Music director BY ANDREW LINNABARY

Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn, director of WSU’s School of Music, teaches a class.
Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn was, by his own admission, a mess-up as a teenager. He didn’t use the word “mess-up” to describe his younger self — the one he used isn’t fit for print. Sternfeld-Dunn grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. He was bright but unmotivated, and kind of a jerk, he said. His hair nearly reached his knees his sophomore year of high school. He hadn’t cut it since the fourth grade, when his sister told him to grow it out. He wanted to pierce his ears, but his parents wouldn’t let him. So he rebelled in the ways he could. “I didn’t know what I was doing,” said a shorter-haired SternfeldDunn, now 38 and director of Wichita State’s School of Music. Sternfeld-Dunn did have aspirations during high school, though. He wanted to become a circus clown.
“I was going to go to the Ringling Brothers circus college in Florida. I was going to become a circus clown, and I was going to see the world,” Sternfeld-Dunn said Monday in the Duerksen Fine Arts Center.
“SPORTS, AT THE END OF THE DAY, ARE ABOUT CREATING A TEAM TO WORK TOGETHER TO WIN SOMETHING. YOU CAN’T WIN MUSIC.” —Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn, director of the School of Music
He never got around to chasing that dream, but his attitude did leave him chasing something: a girl, Kristine, who he met in summer school between his freshman and sophomore years. “I had a total crush [on her],” Sternfeld-Dunn said. SEE STERNFELD-DUNN PAGE 3
