alt-J hits calmer waters 3 out of 5 There are “hipstersâ€? and there are hipsters. The former are the ones you see around campus wearing beanies in 100-degree weather, sipping Americanos and listening to Sigur RĂłs through boutique headphones while walking to their philosophy courses.

The latter are the types of people who go so far out of hipster culture to include pop-star and infamous twerker, Miley Cyrus, in their latest album.

British alternative-rock band alt-J — as you could probably guess, falls in the latter category.

Coming off a huge wave of success from debut album, “An Awesome Wave,� the band comes to their sophomore album with less to prove. And it shows.

The first album — a five-year effort — felt overdone with the unique syncopated feel the band is now well-known for. Backed The Sunflower is published by student-employees on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, the paper is printed once weekly on Wednesday, with exceptions for holidays and finals.

The Sunflower (published for use by WSU students, faculty and staff) is private property and unlawful removal or use of papers is prosecutable. One copy may be taken for free. Additional copies must be purchased for $1 each. The Sunflower is also partially funded by the Student Government Association.

by swells of synthesized bass hits and fronted by the sometimes inebriated-sounding Joe Newman, it’s no wonder the band drew comparisons to alt-rock legend, Radiohead.

While alt-J is by no means the new Radiohead, the newest album shows much more potential for career longevity with a diverse range of sounds.

The first three tracks are

relatively mild yet musical, showing the band has less to prove and more to say.

When the fifth track and single, “Left Hand Free,� comes on, the band says they have more to prove by going into a straightup blues — far outside their previously defined style.

Acceptable, but not mindblowing, murder mystery in ‘Tombstones’ Maybe it’s because the movie theater marquee has been a dumpster fire COLUMN BY for the past ALEX PERRY month and a half, but “A Walk Among the Tombstones” feels refreshing right now.

There’s nothing particularly original about it, nor is it a great film, but the fact that it’s at all enjoyable and somewhat wellcrafted makes it worth seeing if grisly murder mysteries and/or Liam Neeson are appealing to you.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: an alcoholic, retired NYPD officer with a troubled past (Neeson) is dragged back into action to privately investigate a brutal killing spree.

The victims are all women, and their deaths are all a bit gruesome.

So, yeah. “A Walk Among the Tombstones” hits just about every box on the dark murder mystery checklist, for better and for worse. Thanks to a dash of style and solid performances, though, it manages to be a nice two-hour diversion.

Let’s start with the better. The film absolutely nails the kind of atmosphere you want out of something like this. The seedy underbelly of New York City circa 1999 is captured beautifully

by cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr., who uses focus and framing effectively throughout the film. Put simply, it’s a looker.

Now, the worst. As I said, every female character in “A Walk Among the Tombstones” exists to be a victim. It’s something that is annoyingly common in the genre and has been for many decades. Unfortunately, this film doesn’t do much to buck the trend.

One thing I greatly appreciated is the conclusion of the

story, and I’ll try to explain why without spoiling anything.

Films like this have a tendency to explain the murders with some grand, conspiratorial twist near the end, pulling the tablecloth out from under the viewer. In “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” the killers are established early on, and the film never wavers.

There’s no conspiracy; they’re just awful, sadistic human beings.

ter, with a performance that matches what we’ve come to expect from him by now.

He’s a great actor, so his presence is enough to lift just about anything.

Otherwise, the supporting cast is fine. Brian Bradley’s role as TJ, a homeless teen who takes after Neeson’s character, is the most notable of the bunch.

Some of the best dialogue comes out of his mouth, so it’s sort of a bummer that he isn’t in the film much.

“A Walk Among the Tomb-

stones” is certifiably decent. It’s got a nice look to it, and the story, while unremarkable, stays grounded enough to remain believable.

Also, it thankfully shows a remarkable amount of restraint with its R-rating, leaving the most disturbing aspects of the murders off-screen.

It won’t change anyone’s life, but if this is your thing, go for it.

‘The Skeleton Twins’ SEE IT Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig play estranged twins in a comedic drama. Reviews are positive so far, so if you like the comedic stylings of either of those actors, this is probably for you.

When I make this recipe, I always use lemon or strawberry cake mix, but feel free to use your favorite flavor.

“That thigh gap, though.”

Gross. I’ve seen those words countless times – comments and COLUMN BY captions paired SHELBY REYNOLDS with an image of an itty-bitty girl’s waist in a teeny-weeny bikini, yellow polka dots or not, with this gaping space between her thighs.

“That thigh gap, though.”

Who decided that a gap between a woman’s thighs is desirable and necessary? Was it some guy behind a computer screen? A girl starving herself before bikini season? Either way, they’re both wrong.

For those that have lived under a social media rock for the past few years, a thigh gap is the so-called space between a woman’s thighs when she stands upright with knees touching. In other words, a mystical wonder that exists for only about 1 percent of women.

The phenomena got its start about two years ago following the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which — as always — featured bony models and thigh gaps for days. One of the models, Cara Delevingne, inspired the start of a new parody/fan Twitter account celebrating Delevingne’s model-

esque features. It’s called “Cara’s Thigh Gap.” Social media sites only give fuel to the flames. Girls on Twitter use the hashtag “#thinspo” or “#thinspiration” on images of girls with thigh gaps in hopes to motivate others to be thin.

Blogs on Tumblr are devoted to the thigh gap. One is named “Thigh Gap Please.” One of its posts shows a photo of a girl — lower half only — with the words “If you want it so bad, stop eating.” Another says “Because thigh gaps are worth it.”

The fact that these photos don’t include a girl’s face is telling, I think. It’s as if the thigh gap is her identity.

Blogger Camille Hugh authored the book “The Thigh Gap Hack: The Shortcut to Slimmer, Feminine Thighs Every Woman Secretly Desires” last year. It includes “hacks” on how to improve metabolism, lose body fat and motivate someone to exercise, in order to attain a thigh gap.

Hugh’s website, thighgaphack. com says that “technically, any

woman can get a thigh gap if they lower their body fat and get skinny enough.”

Here’s the thing with the thigh gap: it doesn’t exist for the majority of women. Much of our body types are determined by genetics, and even if we did exercise ourselves sick, it still is not possible.

Angela Guarda, an associate professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director of the Johns Hopkins Eating Disorders Program, explains in a Washington Post article that even lean athletes cannot achieve the thigh gap.

“Whether a woman’s inner thighs touch depends on bone structure, shape of the pelvic girdle and how far apart the hipbones are, in addition to weight,” the article states.

Because the thigh gap is nearly unattainable, women and young girls are resorting to unhealthy eating and exercising habits. It’s a futile attempt.

Humans outlast the zombies in epic tag game ALT-J

In the final day of competition, Wichita State junior Anthony Shaw and his team were beat, drenched in sweat and tired after being chased by zombies.

The game is called Humans vs. Zombies. It’s an event that has been taking place on campus for the past few days. In the event’s final day, students upped the intensity for the final round.

“This was a fun event,” Shaw said, bent over, drenched in sweat. “I enjoyed it a lot. This game is great because it tests your teamwork capabilities as well as your physical capabilities. Capture the flag was pretty cool, too. Being able to strategize and work, as a team is a great thing.”

The game consists of two teams — humans and zombies — and between those two teams are sets of games they all play.

Two of the more popular games were capture the flag and the traditional game of tag.

Tyler Bird, the director of the event, said he was pleased with how everything went, but said it can always get better.

“The nice thing about this game is that it gives students an opportunity to have a little fun on campus,” Bird said. “Students get to actually run around

The back half of the album lies a little flat as the almost Gregorian chorus’s get a little old.

With the exception of the Miley Cyrus cameo in “Hunger Of The Pine,” the last tracks are hardly worth a listen.

Sophomore albums are difficult to judge as they are usually when a band attempts to truly define their sound without getting redundant and boring.

It would have been easy for alt-J to create the same album again, likely with commercial success, but they took the hard way and tried something new.

If only it would’ve worked a little better.

places on campus that they don’t typically get to see. This is our seventh round doing this event at WSU. This is the third one that I participated in. It seems to have been decent. On a scale of one to 10 I’d give it a seven.”

The game starts with one original zombie, who is supposed to tag as many humans as possible. And if in the end all of

the humans are tagged, then the game is finished — the zombies win. Otherwise, the humans win it.

“The original idea of the game came from a group of people that thought of a great, ingenious way of tag quite a few years back,” Bird said. “They actually have all of their stuff online. That’s where we got our idea.”

The end of the event announced the humans as winners, as they outlasted the onslaught by the group of zombies dressed in bandanas and flags.

“I love this game because it’s an interactive, physical game that only those who believe will win,” senior John Nola said as he was raising his hands in victory. It’s all in the heart.”

There’s nothing wrong with exercising to get results, but idolizing an impossible feat is harming our sisters and daughters. There’s a difference between searching for motivation — which is nowadays labeled “fitspiration” — and searching for false hope.

Instead of commenting on a girl’s photo with “That thigh gap, though,” try “That smile, though.” Those freckles, that personality, that imagination.

At least those things actually exist.

A face illuminates the path from the Rhatigan Student Center to Neff Hall, yet some argue it darkens its surroundings.

Freshman Nicholas Lee emphasized with the misery emanating from the 1906 Bust of Renoir Aristide Maillol sculpture, which he explained does not reflect upon his facial expression, but rather comes from the confines of his mind.

“He’s got deep sorrow on his mind,” Lee said. “But it’s not just regular things — he’s got something higher on his mind, and he’s contemplating it. He’s got deep sorrow in him.”

On the other hand, graduate student Jose Crosa explained the

meaning within the sculpture, as well as the message it conveys.

“In reality, it comforts me. The sheer simplicity of it reminds that at the end of the day, there’s this man who all it does all day is stare blankly to the future,” Crosa said. “And he doesn’t complain. It’s just there, carrying on day after day, without another care in the world.

“In a way, it resembles the internal struggle we all carry deep within our minds, that makes us wonder who we are and why we are here. It stares with its charcoal-black eyes, the darkness of the ignorance of the human condition. I also find it neat.”

Alumnus John Truong finds complete disinterest in the sculpture, given its generic qualities and lack of subtext.

“I really couldn’t care less,” Truong said. “I mean, it definitely

looks like Renoir, and it’s a bust. I find busts boring, as well as conventional art. I mean, it looks like who it is. Big deal. Single dimensions. I mean, it’s like taking pictures of nature that have no context besides the fact that ‘it looks pretty.’

“Yes, it is appealing, or accurate, or whatever, but those are measurable in a sense that is unappealing to me. I don’t think of anything when I look at the sculpture besides ‘Yep, that’s Renoir.’ Maybe as far as I can muster in thinking about it is, man, he likes hats. He also looks really tired.”

While a handful of students might possess different opinions on the bust, its origin is quite simple — Pierre-Auguste Renoir just wanted his friend to sculpt him, which in turn inspired him to pursue the same art form.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ starts sweet 16th season Not many shows can say their 16th season makes the show feel fresh.

REVIEW BY NBC’s hit TJ RIGG drama, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, however, can.

The show ended season 15, described as the most intense of all, with Sgt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) receiving custody of baby Noah Porter, whose mother, Ellie, was murdered earlier in the episode.

“Girls Disappeared,” the season 16 premiere, began with a touching scene of Benson putting Noah to bed, a scene long overdue.

The episode follows the squad’s investigation into Ellie’s rape and murder. With Det.

Nick Amaro (Danny Pino) on temporary reassignment following an incident of police brutality, Det. Dominick “Sonny” Carisi (Peter Scanavino) joins the squad.

As the detectives investigate, working girls connected to Ellie refuse to name their pimp, leading Benson and ADA Rafael Barba (Raúl Esparza) to bribe Tino, Ellie’s pimp, to give up the ringleader, and find out who ordered Ellie killed.

Once the deal is reached, the episode takes a complete shift, with many parties involved being mudered, or dangerously injured, including baby Noah, who is shot at while at the park.

The squad is forced to get creative, starting with Carisi and Amaro going undecover.

While seeing Amaro undercover was nothing new, Carisi

was incredible undercover; he seems a great addition to the squad.

Eventually, everything comes together, and the squad is able to solve Ellie’s murder.

One theme of the episode, as evidenced by all the tweets I saw during it, was the toughness of the squad. Each member of the squad was given their moment to show how passionate and dedicated to the job they are. All of the cast were strong in the episode.

It also allowed for Hargitay to stretch her wings as “Mama Benson.” Seeing Olivia jump into mom mode was a great addition to the show; I look forward to future stories featuring baby Noah with Olivia as his foster mother.

going is not just the phenomenal cast and crew, but the everevolving storytelling. Some of the strongest writing has come

from the last three years, and the show is only going to get better.
