Fiona Coyne/Fall Harder: Saint Pepsi’s ode to summertime

A while ago, a friend of mine posted a link to a song on Facebook. The name of the artist baffled me. “Saint Pepsi?� I said. “Seriously?�

I am quick to judge and bother him when surrounded by our mutual acquaintances, yet I secretly respect his taste in music, thus I decided to give this unknown band a try; I thought they could at least sound better than their name.

They do.

Their EP “Fiona Coyne/Fall Harder,� for a variety of reasons, reminds me of the 18 summers I spent in my home country before I attended WSU. The first track emanates a sound that places recollections on a silver screen — stories and images dance around with elegance. Every warm season features at least one life-altering moment; Coyne manages to awaken those dormant memories and arrange them in chronological order as they flash in front of one’s eyes. One might relive a heartbreak, or experience the first time they felt the battering of waves on a shore as if it occurred the day before.

Some might refer to this phenomenon as nostalgia, though I believe Saint Pepsi achieves The Sunflower is published by student-employees on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, the paper is printed once weekly on Wednesday, with exceptions for holidays and finals.

The Sunflower (published for use by WSU students, faculty and staff) is private property and unlawful removal or use of papers is prosecutable. One copy may be taken for free. Additional copies must be purchased for $1 each. The Sunflower is also partially funded by the Student Government Association.

something beyond common melancholy.

Without a familiar sound, the group triumphs as it delivers one’s long-forgotten successes and failures, and helps one relate them to an abrasive, ferocious sun that smothers all that falls within the periphery of its barbarous warmth, as mere earthlings escape its clutch in playful manner by jumping into a cold pool and splash trickles of water on those who would rather lie down and find peace underneath the heat.

I spotted myself among the people in the pool. Up until my 15th summer, the aforementioned season served as an excuse to celebrate the joy of lacking major responsibilities, and I found comfort in floating around the pool without a single worry on my mind.

For four minutes and four seconds, Coyne returns that notion to its rightful owner, and

reminds us that our reminiscences remain within a few clicks on Spotify.

While the first tune evokes occurrences that might take place during a hot summer day, I interpret “Fall Harder� as its nightly counterpart.

Warm nights in Wichita differ from what I’ve known my whole life — humidity, predictability and an everlasting breeze that keeps the Peruvian weatherman from announcing a genuine heat wave. “Fall Harder,� while not as intense as the track that precedes it, also triumphs in its attempt to generate a sense of rediscovery.

‘No Good Deed’ is no good, indeed It’s a dark, stormy night.

A mother (Taraji P. Henson) has the house and COLUMN BY kids to Alex Perry herself for the next couple of days, because her husband is out of town.

Suddenly, the doorbell rings.

In comes a mysterious stranger (Idris Elba).

He says he just needs to use the phone, but we all know he has more sinister motives.

Ninety-five minutes of excruciatingly boring dialogue, kidnapping and random bits of violence against women later, “No Good Deed” has told its grand story.

However, it’s a story nobody needs to hear.

Right off the bat, it’s clear that the movie has little to offer, because its premise is so well-worn.

We all know exactly how this story plays out.

Bad home invasion thrillers are made so frequently that Sam’s Club might as well be selling them to us in bulk.

The conceit here is that Elba’s character is an escaped convict with serious violent tendencies toward women who decides to take them out on Henson while she’s home alone.

There’s a painfully stupid plot twist near the end that attempts to explain why he chose her as a target, but by that point, it’s impossible to care.

It has a certain made-for-TV quality to it, which is a shame, because the leads are both genuinely good.

Elba’s presence is usually a plus for any movie, and he gives off an appropriate level of malice. Henson, on the other hand, brings plenty of energy to her line delivery, which is impressive considering the low quality of the script.

Those lead performances can’t save “No Good Deed” from literally everything else that’s wrong about it, though.

There might be two tripod shots in the whole thing because otherwise the cinematography is jittery and pedestrian at best.

The pacing is awful, as absolutely nothing of interest happens in most of the first half.

Even at such a short length, a great deal of the scenes feel like unnecessary filler.

It doesn’t feel like it was written to fill out a featurelength film.

If there are any other compliments for “No Good Deed” (that’s using the term “compli-

ment” liberally), the film doesn’t go as far with disgusting violence against women as it could have.

There are a handful of uncomfortable scenes, but considering the fact that Elba’s

character is nothing more than a malevolent misogynist, it could be a lot worse in that regard.

Otherwise, there isn’t much more I can say about “No Good Deed.”

It’s a gigantic waste of acting talent, and there’s just no reason for anyone to see it, period.

‘The Maze Runner’ SEE IT The first remotely interesting movie to come out in at least a month, this young adult novel adaptation is getting alright reviews. It should at least be entertaining.

‘A Walk Among the Tombstones’ SEE IT

Liam Neeson is back, and this time he’s investigating the disappearance of someone else’s wife. It looks like a solid detective movie, and Neeson can always bring gravity to stuff like this.

Simple, delicious ramen

Ramen noodles have long been a college student’s savior. They COLUMN BY are both CHEYENNE BULLOCK affordable and convenient to make.

However, after many years of eating them and trying every flavor they offer, I found myself tired of ramen.

This lo mein recipe puts a whole new spin on the taste of ramen noodles without costing a lot of money or time to

prepare.

The recipe calls for bell peppers, but I substituted broccoli, and it was delicious.

I also used onion powder rather than the chopped onion the recipe calls for.

What you’ll need: 1 package chicken ramen noodles with seasoning packet 2 cups water 1 pound chicken breast strips 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green peppers 1/4 cup chopped carrots 1 tablespoon oil

1 tablespoon soy sauce What to do: 1. Mix oil, soy sauce and half the seasoning packet in a skillet.

2. Add chicken and brown until desired brownness and texture.

3. Cook noodles either by boiling in a pan or using boiling water from a microwave.

4. Add vegetables to chicken and cook until mixture is tender.

5. Add noodles to the rest of the ingredients and cook on medium for five minutes, stirring constantly.

In the fall of 2007, my Facebook profile was born. This spring, I killed COLUMN BY it. But to be JESSE MCCULLOUGH fair, it was never really alive. It was just a not-quite-right copy of me.

Facebook isn’t real life — it’s a yelling contest. It’s a blaringly loud 50,000-seat arena stuffed with people who are all trying to convince you that they’re living the dream and loving life.

It’s a bulletin board where you can proclaim your “excitement” and “thankfulness” for your new job, car, house, award or relationship — a brag-factory. It’s a rusty trough filled with ego-slop — just stick your head in and gulp down “likes” until you’re sick.

Facebook is the best place for friends who aren’t friends to meet.

It’s a thousand pictures of the girl who wasn’t interested in you. She’s on vacation in South Padre — holding a Corona — and she’s smothered by three ripped, tan dudes in board shorts.

Facebook is what you check during your nine-to-five so you can see your wealthy high school friends studying abroad in Japan.

That Okinawa sunset looks nice compared to the fluorescent lights that shine on you.

Facebooking is the modern version of reading Cosmo and starving yourself because you don’t look like a super model. It’s a fantasy that breeds feelings of

inadequacy and depression.

Facebook stalks you down and holds you underwater until you’re gasping for breath. It emails you every day, it makes your phone buzz constantly with pictures of your ex-coworker’s baby and your neighbors dog. It digs its claws into your family and friends and uses them as Facebook recruiters.

It intertwines itself into every facet of your life. When you listen to music on Spotify, Facebook broadcasts a live-feed of what you’re listening to, track-by-track.

When you shop on Amazon, Facebook profiles you and targets ads directly to you. You can be excluded from jobs if you don’t have a Facebook.

The people who own Facebook make billions selling your personal information. Facebook is an ant-farm. It’s a slave colony. If Facebook were a man, he would be a compulsive, addicted, neurotic, self-conscious, self-hating man. But he would be gorgeous.

He would tell you exactly what you want to hear. He would move in to your house. He would make you dinner and compliment you for hours — then, in a blink — he’d torrentially point out every fault, shortcoming and disappointment in your life until you couldn’t even get out of bed. Now, you and I are different people. We live different lives — so I can’t claim to know your Facebook experience.

In the end, I can only speak for myself. Facebook isn’t enjoyable for me — addictive as it may be. It isn’t social in the way I want to be social.

5 Office of Diversity and Inclusion gets a new office CAMPUS LIFE

A central location is just what the Office of Diversity and Inclusion needed.

Program coordinator Natalie Toney stressed the importance of the new office — room 208 at the Rhatigan Student Center — and explained the expectations the organization possesses with this recent move.

“To be able to really touch and reach out to more students,” she said. “With this being centralized, now we have a bigger charge I think to really reach out to students and help getting them involved in all the programs that we have.

“And getting them exposed to diversity programs and training and our mentoring programs, and I think it’s gonna be more work for us now that we have more students coming into our space.

“We have seen quite a bit of things, we’ve seen a lot of lack of support for different populations, so one of the things we’re trying to do is better support the LGBQT population.”

Lydia Konte, president of Student Ambassadors — which represents a variety of programs and activities — emphasized the rewarding experience of working with students who deal with recurring issues on campus as she stressed that her eagerness to be a part of

something meaningful drove her to joining the organization in the first place.

“I came from a place where there wasn’t a lot of diversity,” she said. “My high school was small. I graduated with a hundred people in my class. I wanted a different experience than what I had been exposed to thus far. I enjoy learning

about other people and where other people come from and I feel that there’s so much oppression because people don’t understand why this person or that group is the way it is.

“And if everyone took time to just understand why people do the things they do, people would be more accepting of each other.”

Taking time off isn’t the end of the world

In her heart, Wichita State student Alexa Roseberry always wanted to be a dentist. But she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to do the classwork.

Instead of pursuing what she really wanted to do, Roseberry started her college career in ceramics. In her first few years of college, Roseberry changed her major five to six times and spent a semester at Butler Community College. She said she wasn’t really excited about school.

“I was ready for some time off, and that’s when I ran into an old friend, Laura Evans, who was going on a mission trip,” Roseberry said.

Roseberry’s parents were supportive of her decision to take a year off to pursue an opportunity on a mission trip to Australia and Bangladesh with an organization called Youth with a Mission, or YWAM, in Newcastle, Wales.

So, Roseberry temporarily left WSU to pursue opportunities abroad. She began to save up the money. In October 2012, she and Evans took off for Australia.

YWAM offered Roseberry training on sharing her faith in God, and it and pushed her to new limits.

Roseberry left WSU unfocused and unsure of what she wanted to do, and she came back with a renewed sense of faith in God and a desire to fulfill her passion for dentistry.

“I’m grateful for the experience, and it gave me the encouragement I needed,” Roseberry said. “If my child was unfocused like I was, I would tell them to take the time off because it changed everything.”

Roseberry has since applied to dental school and is awaiting her acceptance.

“Taking time off from school isn’t the end of the world,” she said.

“For me, it was a huge opportunity to grow as a person.”

Tallgrass film fest brings ‘Best in Show,’ puppies to campus

Sometimes, the best presentation of a show is right in front of you, viewed from the perspective of a lawn chair or a blanket, cuddled up with a beloved pet at your feet.

Late Wednesday evening, the WSU President’s office teamed up with the Tallgrass Film Association to present “Best in Show,” a film centered around the lives of individuals who present at a national dog show competition.

However, in a twist, the President’s Office took the rendition of the film to the next level — moviegoers were invited to bring their own dogs for their own dog show competition.

Senior Jessica Craft brought her one-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Leah, to the event.

Not only did Leah get to enjoy the evening, she also put on a show

herself — enough to win a trophy.

“Leah won the Busy Bee award,” Craft said. “When her name was announced, she ran across the stage to the speaker. She wrapped her leash around the announcer and everyone laughed.”

“Leah puts her heart into absolutely everything, so it was a well-deserved win,” Craft said.

Located at the Duerksen Fine Arts Amphitheater, some WSU students found the free event a welcome escape from dorm rooms, basements and the monotony of a Wednesday evening.

“We actually saw the advertisements on the TV screens,” freshman Jacy Beck said. “It is a convenient, fun thing to do.”

Beck, a resident of Shocker Hall, was one of many students who decided to take advantage of an alfresco movie.

“I just wanted to see the film,” said Damodar Hasti, a WSU graduate student.

Hasti said this is not the first

open-air movie showing that he has attended at the amphitheater.

“Before this movie, I came to see the [animated] movie that played before,” Hasti said. “This is my second time out here.”

“Best in Show,” having a story line everyone could love, seemed too good of an opportunity to pass up for easy laughs.

“I thought it would be perfectly corny,” junior Ali VanDaren said.

VanDaren saw the advertisements for the event and thought it would be a great way to spend the evening.

“I saw the advertisement on Blackboard,” VanDaren said.

For VanDaren, the film was more than just an evening excursion — it fulfilled an academic requirement for her.

“In my literature class, we had to see something from Tallgrass,” VanDaren said. “I wasn’t sure if it would work, but, checking with my teacher, she approved it.”

One trend noticed at the

Amphitheater though, was the sparse crowd.

“I’m surprised there isn’t more people here,” VanDaren said.

Freshman Morgan Ward shared some insight on a possible cause of this from her grassy seat, just off of the sidewalk.

“We started preparing for the event about 3 weeks ago,” Ward said. “We started [full] advertising last week.”

Ward, an employee of the President’s Office, said she is still happy with the turnout of the film presentation.

“I wish more came, but we kinda got a late start on the advertising,” Ward said.

However, this is not the last film that the President’s Office plans on putting on this fall.

“We are doing something in October, also with Tallgrass,” Ward said. “We are not sure what movie exactly, but we are definitely putting on another movie like this.”

Although the Cinema Alfresco showing of “Best in Show” provided an opportunity for WSU students to view a well-known film for the first time, for one other student, it was an opportunity to see a favorite.

“I saw this event announcement online and I love this movie,” senior Brian McIntosh said. “I have seen this movie many times.”

McIntosh said that, for him, the best part of the film was not something that was apparent on the surface.

“Just the subtle humor [in the storyline] is my favorite,” McIntosh said. “I would give it a definite 4.5 stars minimum.”

Even with the low turnout, those who attended the film said that it was a great opportunity to view a great film — even better than the previous events at the Amphitheater.

“This is the best experience so far,” Hasti said. “I love these kinds of movies.”
