Iron Maiden wins with ‘Powerslave’

Iron Maiden’s fourth studio album, “Powerslave,� celebrated its 30th anniversary last week. I neglected to do a Throwback Thursday last week simply because I was enjoying Rubblebucket’s Save Charlie EP too much. Sinful? Perhaps.

When I heard “Powerslave,� the first album I ever owned, for the first time in my life, I decided no other album would ever generate energy within me so effectively.

I’ve listened to quite a few great albums over the years (many of which are even better than “Powerslave�) but all have failed to electrify me the same way.

Megadeth, Helloween, Anthrax — they’ve all crafted magnificent metal classics, and they’ve all fallen short of matching Maiden’s vigor.

I was around 13 when “Aces High,� the first song in the album, played in my Discman. Back then, I could have barely told my history teacher who fought in World War II, let alone realize that the song’s lyrics narrate an aerial battle.

Yet, I felt it.

The rush of jumping into an aircraft and subsequently drifting through clouds filled my entire body. I sensed action, danger and The Sunflower is published by student-employees on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, the paper is printed once weekly on Wednesday, with exceptions for holidays and finals.

The Sunflower (published for use by WSU students, faculty and staff) is private property and unlawful removal or use of papers is prosecutable. One copy may be taken for free. Additional copies must be purchased for $1 each. The Sunflower is also partially funded by the Student Government Association.

Eight years later, my friends and I found ourselves at a metal bar in Peru on New Year’s Eve. A relatively quiet night considering the occasion, the owners limited themselves to playing the cheesiest, most abhorrent glam rock ever composed. The bartender, who takes requests from acquaintances and regulars, frowned as I approached him. As it turns out, he wasn’t particularly fond of our little clique. “Hey, can you play ‘2 Minutes to Midnight’ next?� I asked. The second track on the aforementioned album remains a fan favorite — I’ve heard of instances in which a select group of individuals attempts to boo Maiden off the stage if they refuse to play it. They never succeed. “How original,� he replied. The

I concluded that “2 Minutes to Midnight� allows people to bring out one’s true self, however briefly, as a form of release. “Losfer Words (Big ‘Orra)� serves as the album’s trademark instrumental. Though Maiden features marvelous, talented musicians such as bassist Steve Harris and guitarist Dave Murray, their music benefits a great deal from Bruce Dickinson’s vocal range. While this piece doesn’t shine, it remains a solid effort.

I recalled hearing “Flash of the Blade� in Argento’s “Phenomena,� a horror film about a telepath who communicates with bugs and investigates gruesome murders at a boarding school in Switzerland while fighting deformed psychopathic children;

by Motley Crue’s “Girls, Girls, Girls,� among other abominations.

I have consequently reimagined the night — what if the bartender had played the song? Several times I asked myself whether the other patrons would have controlled themselves. I could picture them pounding on the table with manic rage, shortly before standing up on the tables,

the song plays as she runs away from the killer. It fits perfectly within the film because it triggers a sense of paranoia and anxiety within the listener — the opening alone startled me once. “The Duelists,� “Back to the Village� and the title track are all underrated, mostly-forgotten Maiden tunes that sport the unmistakable Maiden sound.

No spy fun to be had in ‘The November Man’ When you star in a few James Bond movies, you can probably afford to rest REVIEW BY on your laurels ALEX PERRY a little bit.

Of course, some of those actors (Sean Connery) move on to long, successful careers, while others (Roger Moore) just sleep on piles of cash after their turn is over.

If “The November Man” is any indication, Pierce Brosnan probably should’ve chosen the latter option.

The idea, obviously, was to bring a former 007 (and a fine actor in his own right) back for one last ride on the spy train, and why not?

“GoldenEye” was pretty good, so an off-brand, low-rent spy thriller with a much older version of the guy from that movie should be okay too, right?

Honestly, while “The November Man” gets kind of despicable over time (more on that later), it’s an alright time for the first half or so.

Retired spy Peter Devereaux (Brosnan) is brought back into the game, and he has to evade the CIA and some evil Russians (of course) while protecting a woman with precious information sought by both parties (Olga Kurylenko).

Set that story in sleazy Serbian

back-alleys and sprinkle in some political conspiracies and you’ve got something that, on paper, should at least be entertaining.

For a while, it totally is entertaining, if nothing special.

The first half moves at a blistering pace with little downtime, and even though the action isn’t noteworthy, it’s acceptable.

The problems come later on, when the film has to stop for a little while to sort its story out in the clumsiest way imaginable.

It arrives at its obvious plot twists with nothing resembling grace, and Brosnan’s character, framed as a hero the whole time, reveals himself to be extremely unlikable.

Specifically, they make it hard to root for Brosnan when he mutilates an innocent woman to prove some ill-defined point about intimate relationships to his former spy partner.

If this scene had been used to antagonize that character, it would have still been disturbing, but effective, I guess.

However, it’s immediately swept under the rug, and he’s still presented in a sympathetic light afterward.

Actually, it probably still would’ve been gross in a different context, because the film later actually does use a brief, unnecessary depiction of sexual assault to emphasize the villainy of a

different character.

It’s referenced in passing several times throughout the film, but for some reason, they felt the need to actually show it to us to make sure we got the point.

This might sound like an overreaction to what is basically 45 seconds of screen time, but it

stuck out in a bad way.

Even without the more nasty parts of the story, “The November Man” is about as bland and forgettable as it gets.

The plot is uninteresting and makes little sense in spots, none of the performances are worth noting and the action scenes

don’t set it apart from anything else.

It’s hard to feel one way or another about it for a while, but once it gets distasteful, it’s pretty easy to actively dislike it.

If you like inspirational movies about animals, then go ahead and see this, by all means. Otherwise, you probably won’t miss much.

‘No Good Deed’ SKIP IT Idris Elba’s presence is anything is appealing, but that might not be true when he’s playing a violent home invader. It might be an effective thriller, but it seems like it could get gross pretty easily.

This recipe for spaghetti is super easy, with only three ingredients.

Spaghetti was something I grew up eating.

Every Tuesday used to be spaghetti

night in my house.

I can’t share my family recipe unless I want to deal with my grandma, but this recipe is affordable, quick and delicious.

Personally, I always season my meat with garlic and onion powder to add an extra dimension of flavor. If the sauce isn’t meaty enough, chopped polish kielbasa goes great with this sauce.

What you’ll need: • 1 package of thin spaghetti noodles

• 1 jar of Prego Traditional Sauce • 1 lb. of ground beef Cooking Directions: 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add spaghetti noodles and cook until tender.

2. Heat a skillet to mediumhigh temperature and cook ground beef until it’s completely brown.

3. Drain the noodles using a strainer and place in bowl. Add a bit of olive oil to prevent the noodles from becoming sticky.

4. Use a strainer to drain ground beef and rinse with warm water.

5. Combine sauce and ground beef in a saucepan and let cook until the desired temperature is reached.

Robert Frost is a damn good poet. He shares thoughts so COLUMN BY clearly and JESSE MCCULLOUGH beautifully that you can’t help but think, “I could have written that.” He hits the nail right on the head — with the hammer. He’s the hammer. This paragraph is an example of something Robert Frost would never write.

Here’s something he did write: “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both — and be one traveler, long I stood — and looked down one as far as I could, to where it bent in the undergrowth. Then took the other, as just as fair — and having perhaps the better claim, because it was grassy and wanted wear.”

My mom, and Elliott School teacher, Madeline McCullough, arms herself with the term “digital native.” The words crouch on the tip of her tongue, ready to pounce at the first sight of unfamiliarity with anything digital.

“You’re a digital native, Jess.

You were born into this. You understand it. I need you to come over and fix it for me,” — something she often says — where “it” can be anything from troubleshooting computer issues to finding her TV remote.

I’m happy to do it, because

she’s my mom. But it irritates me at the same time. I hate that mindset: the easy-to-quit mindset. Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean you can’t understand it.

I’m also not a fan of the term “digital native.” It suggests that I was born knowing how technology works. Sorry mom, I have to figure it out, snip-bysnip, just like everyone else.

My roommate recently moved out, and I decided I want a larger TV in my living room.

There’s a reason people buy TVs. You buy it, take it home, plug it in and you’re done.

That sounds boring to me.

I’ve gone against the grain my

entire life. When I was 13, I secretly hooked up cable in my bedroom. I’ve been a vegetarian, living in Kansas, for 10 years.

I’ve built my own computer by hand, fixed my own washing machine and painted my own bathroom. So I’m not about to take the easy way out and just buy a TV. I did the research and bought a 3D-capable, eco-friendly HD projector. I also bought a Bluetooth-enabled surround sound system, a ceiling mount for the projector, 3D glasses, HMDI and audio cables and converters to plug HDMI cables into my laptop and tablet.

Friday fun: Casino night preview

‘Sodbuster’ stands out on campus

When he heard about the sculpture, freshman August Fielding denoted interest, albeit slight confusion.

“Wait, which one?” he said.

Although situated southeast of the Rhatigan Student Center, and in spite of its considerable size, several students fail to notice it right away — Luis Jimenez, Jr.’s “Sodbuster: San Isidro” stands tall on campus since it was purchased with SGA funds in

1984, and sports a colored fiberglass and acrylic-urethane finish.

As soon as he laid eyes on it for the first time, Fielding was quick to offer his analysis on the sculpture and the meaning thereof. “[I see] a hard-working man pushing through struggles to try to reach his life goals,” he said.

“Bulls represent his support system in life — his friends and family — because they help him pull the plow.”

Alumnus Tyler Miller became familiar with the sculptures

throughout his years at WSU. Despite forgetting some, “Sodbuster: San Isidro” remains within his memory.

“Upon first look, the guy on the ox seems pissed off as heck,” he said. “Holy crap, the muscles on the ox — thing looks like some kind of boss battle from God of War.” Jana Durfee, the interim museum curator at the Ulrich Museum of Art, subsequently addressed the true metaphor within the sculpture, aside from explaining its origins.

‘Sodbuster’ is a heroic and

contemporary sculpture dedicated to the farmer, who is associated in the title with the name of the Catholic patron saint of farmers, San Isidro,” she said.

“Potshards and corn kernels being upturned by the plow relate to Jimenez’s experiences in Hondo, N.M. The man behind the plow is a portrait of a Hondo woodchopper whom Jimenez had befriended.”

Around 8 p.m., the sun sets down. Not a soul walks around campus.

Only cicadas are heard. He keeps on plowing.

Every year, the Student Activities Council brings casino-style fun to Wichita State students, staff and the general public.

BayLee Hoskinson, chair of Shockers After Dark, has worked diligently planning this year’s event. It will be Friday at 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Casino night will be at Shocker Sport Grill and Lanes in the basement of the Rhatigan Student Center.

Attendees can participate in various casino games while engaging with other students, staff and community members. The games will include Craps, Poker, roulette, slots and other casino games.

Prizes will also be available for winners. Prizes will include items such beats headphones and a graphing calculator.

“We will have tons of Casino night games and fun,” Hoskinson said.

“People should come because it will be a lot of fun and there are some great prizes.”

Rowling succeeds again J.K Rowling has impressed me yet again.

Her latest book, “The Silkworm,” REVIEW BY was released TJ RIGG over the summer. The book is a sequel to her 2013 novel, “The Cuckoo’s Calling,” which was released under Rowling’s pen name, Robert Galbraith.

“The Silkworm” follows protagonist Cormoran Strike (who is usually referred to by his surname only), after the events of the previous book.

Strike is still working as a private investigator, and has gained fame after solving a murder in “The Cuckoo’s Calling.” His clients include people who just want to know how he solved the murder of the previous story, and he appears annoyed with his current situation.

At the start of the novel, Leonora Quine, whose husband, Owen, has been missing for several weeks, approaches Strike. Quine hires Strike to investigate her husband’s disappearance. Strike and Quine both suspect that Owen’s disappearance has something to do with the leaking of his latest manuscript, “Bombyx Mori,” which features fictional ver-

sions of people in Owen’s life, who are portrayed in his book in a negative light.

Strike begins his investigation into Quine’s disappearance, starting with interrogations of the people who are featured in Quine’s book.

Eventually, Strike stumbles upon Owen Quine’s dead body and finds that he was brutally murdered in the same way the protagonist of “Bombyx Mori” was killed. While the police investigate the murder, Strike starts an investigation of his own, thinking the police’s suspicions to be wrong.

Rowling’s trademark writing style helps keep the reader guessing as Strike completes his investigation. A series of suspects crop up, each seeming just as likely to have murdered Owen Quine.

As with the previous book, the murderer is not revealed until the final act of the book, where Strike casually confronts the killer once he’s figured everything out.

In addition to seeing growth with Strike, another highlight of the book is the character development of Strike’s secretary, Robin. Previously, Robin was seen merely as Strike’s assistant.

In “Silkworm” however, Robin’s fiancé Matthew is

finally introduced to not only readers, but also to Strike. In addition, Strike begins to help Robin achieve her dream of being a detective by starting to train her and let her participate in his investigation. It was great to see Robin get some major character development during the story; I hope to see more of it in future Strike novels.

All in all, Rowling succeeded in writing this book. It is definitely a page-turner just like all of her previous works.

If you’re a lover of crime novels, “The Silkworm” is the book for you. It will keep you guessing throughout, and only when the killer is finally unmasked will you be able to stop reading.

Rowling has said she plans to release more books about Strike in the years to come. She’s gone as far to say that she might write more books about Strike than she did about Harry Potter.

Hopefully she stays true to her word. The story of Strike is a compelling one and one that deserves a full series.

Music group Twin Cities rocks out

Twin Cities performed Saturday at ICT Fest, a concert featuring local bands. Spearheaded by Stoldt, the group released on Sept.

1 their new album “The Things You Say You Just Went Through” completely free of charge. As they wrapped their latest concert at the ICT Fest, Twin Cities spoke about some of their goals as a band, as well as their personal motivations.

“I enjoy playing here because it’s a big pool of Wichita musicians,” Erickson said. “There’s not as many people as there would be at a big music festival, but it’s nice to be at a place where you can just listen to music.”

While they maintain their priorities outside of the Wichita independent music scene, Erickson, Stoldt and guitarist Michael Engdahl devote a fair amount of time to Twin Cities.

Nevertheless, they insist that their content will remain free for as long as they can keep it that way.

“We just enjoy making albums right now,” Stoldt said. “It’s a lot of fun to write songs with a thematic

message. A lot of our songs are about feeling down and the idea that even if you’re feeling terrible, there’s other people who have also been there.”

Erickson, who plays drums, explained that the inspiration he draws from bands like Shylac and Vitrius fuels his performances.

“It’s cathartic, playing drums for Twin Cities. I just want other people to have that same cathartic experience — it can be a release for other people,” he said.

Engdahl noted the dissimilari-

ties between Twin Cities and his usual projects, but he said playing at the ICT Fest is a completely different experience.
