No car on campus: how to live it up without four wheels ANDREW MANAGING LINNABARY EDITOR @linnabary

Living on campus without a car? If you’re not willing to shell out money for an Uber, there are some on-campus and nearby options available to keep you entertained. In the basement of the Rhatigan Student Center is Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes, offering bowling, billiards and video games. Each game of bowling is $2.75 with a Shocker ID card ($3.75 without). Shoe rentals are $2 apiece. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to midnight Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Any student enrolled at WSU has access to the Heskett Center, a fitness facility offering basketball courts, weight lifting equipment, an indoor track, a climbing wall, an aquatic center, tennis courts, and more. Entry is granted by presenting a current Shocker ID card. For students with a more artistic sensibility, the Ulrich Museum of Art, located on the southwest corner of campus, has free admission. Visitors can explore 20th and 21st-century art. The galleries are open Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Outdoor Sculpture Collection is always open. Students who are 21 or older have a couple options for getting a drink near campus. The Fieldhouse, located off 17th right across from campus, is a sports bar with a good number of TVs and a pool table. The bar also does trivia

night on Thursdays, starting at 7:30. For students who’d rather frequent a more secluded establishment, there is Kirby’s, tucked in to the side of the laundromat on 17th and just down the road from the Fieldhouse. I think this quote from a foursquare.com review of Kirby’s best sums up the atmosphere: “A night at Kirby’s is like a party in your closet, but with MOAR BEER.” For students with a bike or who don’t mind walking a couple miles, there are some additional entertainment options. Anyone looking for a thrill can go to Xtreme Racing and Entertainment, a high-speed indoor go-kart track located at 21st and Woodlawn. The karts can reach speeds of up to 45 mph. Riders must sign waivers and wear helmets during the race, so you know it’s the real deal. After each race, stats are given to each racer, including their best and worst lap time. At $20 for a race, it’s a bit pricey, but is definitely a good way to get your blood f lowing. Xtreme Racing and Entertainment is open Sunday through Thursday 11 to 11 and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight. Students who enjoy hookah can go to Lava Hookah Lounge, also located at 21st and Woodlawn, across from Spangles. Patrons must be 18 to enter. The hookah bar also serves drinks to guests 21 and older. Lava has both sofas and chairs to sit on while enjoying your hookah. Lava is open from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday.

Where to shop without making your wallet say ‘stop’ ANDREW MANAGING LINNABARY EDITOR @linnabary

With a Shocker ID card, Wichita State students have access to a number of activities on-campus, such as Shocker athletics and other campus events, the Heskett Center and Shocker Dollars (the currency used for meal plans). But that ID can snag you some pretty cool deals off campus as well. The following are a number of businesses that offer some student discounts. In addition, it’s a good idea to ask any place you’re shopping or eating at if they offer a student discount — it’s surprising how many offer 5 percent or more off. Just be sure to have your ID handy. For fast food, Subway, Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s and Burger King offer 10 percent off your total purchase when you present your ID. At Qdoba, bring five bucks and your ID and you’ll have enough

for one of their $5 student burrito meals. If Qdoba’s not your style, Chipotle offers students a free drink with purchase when you show your ID. If you need to use a printer or copier or send a package, FedEx Office offers 30 percent off on documents and 20 percent off on shipping services. In addition to stores that honor student IDs, there are also many businesses that offer student discounts. You just need to verify your student status via your WSU email. Students can get a special college rate for the New York Times online, at just 99 cents for the first four weeks and 50 percent off the normal subscription rate after that. Students can also get a discounted subscription to The Wall Street Journal. Whether you choose print or online, you’ll receive more than 75 percent off regular rates. If you’re an online shopper, be sure to take advantage of

Amazon’s student membership. Students can get sign up for Amazon Prime at a reduced rate using a WSU email. Prime benefits include two-day shipping, instant streaming of video and music and free release-date delivery on video games, DVDs, books and more. Adobe offers discounted software for students, including Acrobat and Creative Suite. Norton protection software offers up to 50 percent off for PCs and Macs. If you’re looking to save some money on music streaming, Apple Music offers students a 50 percent discount, bringing the rate down to $4.99 a month. Spotify offers a 10 percent discount for students, bringing their premium plan down to $4.99 a month as well. These deals are only some of the available student discounts. Whether in store or online, be sure ask wherever you’re shopping if the store offers a student discount — there’s a good chance they do.
