‘Please use this song’ zings pop music

Perhaps in ways he doesn’t acknowledge, Jon Lajoie speaks undisputable truth.

Much like I did with countless shows before it, I binge-watched “The Vampire Diaries� on Netflix.

Even though I find it a satisfying series in spite of its blatant melodrama, a particular aspect continues to irk me — every single episode ends with the same song.

At least, that’s what they all sound like to me with identical riffs, interchangeable lead singers and rehashed lyrics. The list just goes on and on.

Then, I noticed that song played in some commercials, as well. In their attempts to inspire awe with their product, advertising agencies pick agreeable, Nickelback-esque pop rock ballads with a familiar sound.

They’re pleasurable enough to accompany the commercial itself, yet they will fail to drive target audiences to conduct a thorough Google search, as their desperation to learn the name of the artist — whose track just reached millions of people through the promotion of the latest, hippest toilet paper brand — intensifies with every second their browser takes to load.

That’s where Lajoie’s latest single comes into play. Above all, he The Sunflower is published by student-employees on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, the paper is printed once weekly on Wednesday, with exceptions for holidays and finals.

The Sunflower (published for use by WSU students, faculty and staff) is private property and unlawful removal or use of papers is prosecutable. One copy may be taken for free. Additional copies must be purchased for $1 each. The Sunflower is also partially funded by the Student Government Association.

understands the nature of these recyclable songs and parodies them with the slickness a bona fide comedian, rapper, composer, actor, singer and YouTube celebrity must possess. “Please Use this Song� addresses the faults with our modern-day music business and depicts aspiring musicians as starving artists who rely on commercial contracts in order to get their big break.

It’s a widely reported notion; everyone knows what’s going on with the industry nowadays.

Nevertheless, the tune benefits from Lajoie’s execution and precise jokes.

This tune satirizes the misconceived notion of versatility that songs featured in advertisements and film previews often entail.

Therefore, it lists all the possibilities this song could have if it were picked for a commercial. The military, fast food restaurants and four different kinds of insurance (including cat insurance and insurance insurance) stand out among the numerous targets of Lajoie’s four-minute long musical jest.

While the skillful French-Canadian performer has recorded a wide variety of instant hits — “Very Super Famous� ranks as my personal favorite, but to each their own — he has matured as a songwriter since his “Everyday Normal Guy� days, thus “Please Use this Song� is arguably his finest work to date.

The music video also provides one with a few extra laughs.

‘The Maze Runner’ mostly finds its way I would consider adding another star to the score if it was called COLUMN BY “The Maize ALEX PERRY Runner,” and the movie was about a gargantuan corn maize.

Unfortunately, that’s not the movie we got. However, it turns out “The Maze Runner” (based on the 2007 novel of the same name) is a totally decent addition to the “Teens Taking on Dystopian Worlds” genre with a slightly more unique premise than its peers.

Our generic white male chosen one this time around is Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), who wakes up without any memories in the Glade, a mostly tranquil, walled-in oasis surrounded on all sides by a colossal maze that closes up and shifts around every night.

The Glade is populated by a couple dozen young men, most of whom have taken on commu-

nal labor roles while a handful of them run through the maze each day trying to map it out. Basically, it’s a more peaceful “Lord of the Flies” situation but with a mysterious, dangerous maze instead of the ocean.

While Thomas is indeed a fairly generic protagonist, O’Brien’s performance makes the character tolerable, at least. He probably won’t win any awards for it, but he does a good job of making incredibly bewildered facial expressions at the beginning, and he’s generally inoffensive, like the rest of the cast.

What makes “The Maze Runner” a little more interesting than some of these stories is the ambiguous nature of the threat the characters face. In this genre, the villain is usually a well-defined authority figure, like President Snow in “The Hunger Games.”

Here, the maze, its heretofore unseen horrors and those pulling the strings aren’t fully divulged until a somewhat clumsy exposition dump at the end.

Even then, the ending raises more questions than it answers because, of course, there are two more books in the series.

That kind of vague storytelling is by no means original, but having an amnesiac protagonist puts him on a level playing field with the audience, and it makes those scenes where someone sits him down and explains things to him feel less contrived. The

A dark novel adaptation starring Ben Affleck, the plot (as the title implies) concerns the mysterious disappearance of a woman. That premise might justifiably turn people away, but reviews so far have been excellent.

amnesia angle is usually contrived in and of itself, but it works alright here.

As one would hope, “The Maze Runner” is at its best when it takes place in the maze itself.

The visual design of the maze is appropriately dystopian and oppressive, and that there’s no upper limit to what kind of obstacles are in it makes those parts of the film decently tense.

I wouldn’t say you should run to the theater (I’m sorry) to see “The Maze Runner,” but if you like this genre or the book itself, it’s worth a shot. It’s definitely better than the recent adaptations of “The Giver” and “Ender’s Game,” but still in a tier below “The Hunger Games.”

It’s a prequel to “The Conjuring,” so if you liked that, then you might like this. Horror fans don’t need a recommendation, anyway.

WSU Jazz Arts Ensemble impresses

Miller Concert Hall inside of the Duerksen Fine Arts Center wasn’t near half-full last night, but Wichita State’s Jazz Arts Ensemble came to play.

A few bands of four to five performers each played before the entire ensemble took the stage.

Thor and the Freshmen Four, Jazzheads and the Luke Young Quartet played a variety of jazzy tunes from some smooth blues to some up-tempo melodies.

Thor and the Freshman Four, named after drummer Thorton Bonner, and the other four freshmen performers that joined him were nervous about their first performance, as director Geoffrey Deibel pointed out.

That didn’t stop a freshman on the clarinet from ending their performance with a little improvisational ditty.

After the intermission, the Jazz Arts Ensemble took the stage lead by Deibel.

is happy with the direction the jazz program is going.

“There’s been a lot of change in the program over the past years,” Taylor said. “It’s cool to come back and see people that were professors and are now friends conduct my former classmates. Geoff Deibel has been great. He’s smart. He’s forward-thinking. It’s cool to see what they’re doing now.”

The ensemble’s second song, “Chickenfeed,” was highlighted by some great play on the xylophone.

“Chickenfeed” was followed by the song “Honeybee” which featured Ian Sentry on the drumset, a new drummer this year.

Next, the ensemble played the “ABC Blues,” a song originally by Bob Brookmeyer.

The “ABC Blues” featured multiple solo performances from the saxophone to drums to piano and some trumpets.

The song was stolen by the lone female member of the ensemble, Janelle Garden.

Emotional death row experience for McCarty meet Pamela Willis, a person of similar background to McCarty.

In December of 1982, Willis was murdered. McCarty was eventually charged for the crime because he failed to provide police with the name of the real killer — a name he did not have.

“A [district attorney] representative told me that if I didn’t tell, they would replace [the killer] with me in court...and they did,” McCarty said to the audience Wednesday.

McCarty said at first he was comforted by the idea of the United States justice system. He was certain the system would prove him innocent.

“I really believed I’d be OK,” McCarty said. “Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong.”

said. “We got up every day, read and studied.”

McCarty’s case was brought up in a second trial, but to no avail as the same false evidence was reintroduced. He remained hopeful through those early years, he said.

McCarty said that out of the 25 other inmates he went to death row with in 1986, only he and one other survived. McCarty’s own best friend and cellmate fell to the state of Oklahoma.

“I loved him, he was my friend,” McCarty said. “It killed me that day — his family disowned him, they let me walk down with him before they put him in the death cell.

“As I put my arms around him and said goodbye, I knew I was done.”

Soon after, McCarty began comprising his last will and testament — something death row inmates are encouraged to do as soon as they arrive.

Hope sparked in McCarty again when he received a letter from his mother while working on his will.

The letter contained a newspaper clipping claiming the police crime lab in Oklahoma City was under investigation.

The FBI examined McCarty’s

and several other cases that came from the same department and found tampered evidence.

In May 2007, Judge Twyla Mason Gray ordered McCarty released.

McCarty said the happiest time was walking out after two decades.

“It was profound and deeply moving ... but it didn’t mean what it was supposed to mean,” McCarty said. “There was nothing to celebrate. I never have celebrated.”

McCarty said his suffering was nothing compared to that of Willis’ family.

McCarty was approached by the organization that helped prove him innocent, the Innocence Project, and they convinced him to begin telling his story and speaking out against the death penalty.

He said the death penalty is vastly more expensive than life without parole. McCarty also addressed the idea of the death penalty being a deterrent to crime.

“The ‘we kill people to teach people killing is wrong’ is nonsense,” McCarty said. “It’s not a deterrent to crime.

“Look at Texas: they’ll kill you lickidly split. More come in the front door as to replace the ones that go out the back door.”

Your breath is heavy in COLUMN BY your right JESSE MCCULLOUGH ear. You’re weightless. But you’re wearing a suit, which is good, because you’re drifting through space.

You see the blackened, ripped scraps of your shuttle falling back to Earth as you f loat away.

You’ll drift for eternity without touching a thing.

Your problem? Too much negative space — not enough stuff. Trees, rocks and dirt would be my first picks.

You’ll die of boredom long

before you suffocate.

In design, negative space — white space — is the stuff between stuff. It’s the area between and around objects.

White space isn’t what’s there.

It’s what’s missing.

Last year I worked as lead designer for the Sunf lower. I designed about 95 front pages.

I arranged photos and stories to snuggle up like sardines in a can. It was my biggest rookie mistake — no negative space.

Then again, we paid for color pages — and dammit, we got our money’s worth.

I’ve since learned my lesson.

Now, I’m writing a cumbersome textbook about design.

I don’t have much written

yet, though. Actually, I’ve only written the first three sentences. Here they are: “Becoming a designer is a two-step process. First, you understand what should be included. Then, some time later, you understand what should be removed.”

Maybe the remainder of the book can just be blank pages.

Now, let’s do a quick exercise.

Think about that quiet part in the middle of the song “Shout” by Otis Day and the Knights — also known as “the best song at that wedding.”

It’s the part where everything gets “a little bit softer now” and everyone crouches. That’s white space, in a song. I know, right?

Now, just for one minute, stop where you are and sing that part of “Shout.” But instead of singing “a little bit softer now,” sing “a little bit whiter now” to help you remember white space.

Once you’re crouched low and whisper-singing, slowly stand up. Sing louder and louder until you’ve reached a near-yodel holler. Try to get others to join in — this is what campus involvement is all about, people.

Now you’ll never forget what white space is.

It’s the cream in your coffee and the hole in your donut.

It’s the grassy clearing in the woods behind my house.

Newman Center offers food for the soul each Thursday

The Newman Center provides $1 home-cooked meals every Thursday after mass.

The meals begin around 12:15 p.m. and are followed by a 30-minute apologetics class.

“It’s a good way to get everybody together and share a meal,” said Shea Allen, office manager at the Newman Center, located on the south end of campus.

The tradition that has carried on for years has recently grown in popularity, and it has seen more than 100 people in a day.

David Witherow, who works in the Newman Center, said the meals are always new and fantastic.

“Any home-cooked meal is my favorite home-cooked meal,”

Witherow said.

Witherow said the shepherd’s pie is incredible, especially the mashed potatoes, and is the meal he said he remembers most.

Diane Rice prepares the $1 lunches. Allen said Rice is always imaginative with what she comes up with.

The weekly tradition has made a way for students to visit and catch up. Junior Sarah Doolittle described the lunches as “good food, good fellowship.”

Doolittle said everything Rice makes is delicious, and the meals never disappoint. The food is made with a smile, and it’s only a dollar, which students can afford, she said.

The area in the basement of the Newman Center is said to be packed on Thursdays. The lunch includes general announcements of events happening in the center and on campus.

Junior John Wernert said he

attends regularly and the food is actually good food that is moderately healthy and affordable.

Some desserts on the menu include: lemon cake, pudding, sundaes and cookies.

The dollar lunches start at the beginning of each semester and continue as long as classes are in session.

After the dollar lunch, students can attend “Apologetics to Go.” Wernert said the class always has an interesting topic.

Wernert said the class has recently covered topics like Harry Potter, Batman and ISIS. The Apologetics class takes everyday issues and shows how they relate to the Catholic faith.

Everyone is invited to attend the dollar lunches.

“It’s good for everybody,” Doolittle said.
