Lackluster singles from fallout boys At the height of their popularity, Fall Out Boy decided to split up, or “went on hiatus,� as they call it in the music industry. Those of us who appreciated their genuine talent (as well as the ease with which they differentiated themselves from allegedly similar bands) lamented the momentary break-up.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t the same anymore. I had lost faith in the group. Besides, it’s not as if the members of Fall Out Boy had spent three decades apart or longer — it felt as if they had announced their disintegration mere days earlier.

I did not have the slightest intention of listening, let alone buying Fall Out Boys’ comeback album “God Save Rock and Roll.�

Therefore, when I finally decided to give “Centuries� — one of their latest singles — a try, I didn’t know what to expect. What if they had actually improved upon their once agreeable sound?

I hit play.

Every now and then, I whisper the lyrics to “Sugar, We’re Going Down.� Perhaps it’s no display of musical brilliance, but this song has remained in me since the first time I heard it, because it possesses that distinct quality that gives it a certain advantage over the rest of Fall Out Boy’s long list of hits. “Centuries� doesn’t have that. In fact, it has the opposite effect on me. I would hesitate to deem it a

forgettable song, because it’s not one I fail to remember. It makes me want to forget I ever heard it to begin with, as it bores me to maddening degrees. It worries me that radio station managers allow their DJs to play this song, given the chances that drivers might fall asleep behind the wheel as they hear it.

With that in mind, I resolved to hear yet another single. I supposed “Immortals,� which serves as part of the “Big Hero 6� movie soundtrack, could alter my perception of the direction the band took

over the last year.

So, here’s some advice, Fall Out Boy: next time you guys want to make a quick buck in order to mitigate the financial losses your so-called hiatus brought upon you, at least give your fans the courtesy of releasing presentable, original sounds that remind them of what you once accomplished, instead of that tired, worn-out cacophony you dare to call “music.�

On the other hand, I’m sure psychiatrists all over the globe will benefit from the band’s sleep-inducing invention.

‘The Judge’ doesn’t give too harsh a sentence “Iron Man” came out in 2008, which means it’s been six years since the COLUMN BY modern ALEX PERRY resurgence of Robert Downey, Jr.’s “lovable jerk” routine began.

While he’s talented enough to make it mostly worthwhile, it’s something that, if taken too far, can be absolutely unbearable.

The first half hour or so of “The Judge” came dangerously close to that point, as he plays a selfish, sleazy and downright unpleasant lawyer who has to go back to his Indiana hometown for his mother’s funeral.

His father is the town’s longtime judge, and their relationship could be generously described as rough.

That’s all put to the test when Downey’s character has to defend his father in court on a murder charge.

The story arcs in the ways you’d expect, and it’s not the best part of the film.

It hits some of the schmaltzy, sentimental notes these movies tend to hit, with tender moments being accompanied by swelling strings and piano notes.

Some of the writing is genuinely nice, and even when it’s not, the quality of the perfor-

mances elevates the whole thing.

Duvall is a terrific actor, one we should really be cherishing as his time with us draws nearer to its inevitable end in the next several years.

His constant clashes with Downey feel like natural human interactions instead of forced Hollywood drama.

Speaking of Downey, he’s giving the same kind of performance we’ve come to expect from him, but “The Judge” puts a bit of a different spin on it.

Like I said, his character is generally unlikable, but in believable ways.

He’s one of those small town Midwestern guys who thinks other rural folks are intellectually beneath him.

He left for the big city as early as possible, and his condescending attitudes (along with his quick wit) have served him well as a lawyer.

At first, it’s difficult to enjoy the movie at times, because it asks us to sympathize with this a-hole, but as it goes on, its message becomes clearer.

Downey’s attitudes have been validated for years, but as soon as he goes back to his hometown, people start rightfully calling him out on them.

He isn’t a remarkably changed man by the end, but it seems like he might have been hum-

Wichita State understands that students need real world experience to be competitive once they

leave college.

In a 2013 survey, the largest number of employed students were not from Kansas State or the University of Kansas. They were from right here at WSU. That is because WSU degree programs frequently push students to have real world opportunities in their fields, whether that be by internships or competitions.

Yesterday, Elliott School of Communication (ESC) students had the opportunity to compete with other students in projects that reflect what they have learned in class.

Any ESC student can compete, but it had to be in teams.

Teams of two or three joined together to compete in two competitions. One to create campaigns for the Humane Society and the other to tell stories they found on campus over the course of 12 hours.

These competitions are in celebration of the ESCs 25th birthday. This is the first year of the contest and there are hopes to continue it next year.

Seven teams competed in the campaign contest where contestants were given a week to create a flyer, brochure, print ad or commercial for the Humane Society. If the teams win, their products could be used for promotion.

Ten teams competed in the feature story contest. They had only 12 hours to finish the contest. Students were required to RSVP to the contest so advisors could section off parts of campus for teams to go find stories. The contest started at 8:30 a.m., with area profession-

als helping students brainstorm ideas for their stories.

Then, in their teams, students had all day to film and record a video or audio piece, take photos and write a story. Students were challenged to find unique, untold stories for the project and to stay in their assigned section.

The project was due by 9 p.m. and had to be uploaded onto a WordPress account.

This is just one example of the opportunities available for students. WSU has a wide range of opportunities students can take advantage of to gain the experience they need to be competitive.

There is a WSU rocket club for space engineers that has won several awards for rocket design and frequently competes in competitions. There is a balloon club also for engineering students that does balloon launches off Wallace Hall. There are many musicals and theatre dramas that student can audition for.

There are many more oppor-

tunities for students on campus — but it is up to the student to get involved.

This is college. It’s up to the student to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.

If you say that the opportunities, clubs and options at WSU are

not available, that is just untrue.

After all, college only happens once. The best choice a student can make is to try. So if you’re a student and you hear about an opportunity, give it a go and do your best — you just might find out something new.

was much more an organist than I was a pianist, although I studied the piano for a long time. That’s what I was going to do, and there wasn’t any other question about it.”

Davis, an associate professor with Wichita State’s School of Music, declares great admiration for her preferred instrument.

In the 35 years she spent in France studying the organ under the tutelage of renowned composers and musicians, she became an international.

The Wichita State School of Performing Arts will open the doors of Wilner Auditorium tonight to perform William Shakespeare’s well-known tragedy, “Julius Caesar,” directed by Bret Jones.

“The language Shakespeare used is obviously very different from what we use today,” said Rian Leigh, who plays Cassius.

“We had to spend time figuring out what it all means and getting used to speaking it.”

“Julius Caesar” shows the audience a snapshot of Rome,

brimming with power and jealous citizens striving to usurp that power.

Caesar is well liked throughout Rome. His citizens adore his strength and leadership, save a few.

Caesar’s leading senators, Cassius and Brutus, become worried that Caesar was gaining too much power.

That power could lead to a dictatorship and loss of freedom in Rome.

“The fun of playing Brutus is getting to explore both sides of his struggle,” senior Robert Thomas said. “It has taken time to work with the language, but we’re all excited to perform.”

A conspiracy is born, focused

on the death of Caesar. The story follows the struggle of Caesar’s friend and senator, Brutus.

Brutus struggled in deciding between protecting his friend and protecting the future of Rome by putting an end to the anticipated rule of Caesar.

“The rehearsal process gets more difficult as you go along,” said Leigh. “We rehearse every night for three hours, but this week we’ve been here longer working.”

The show runs tonight through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are free of charge for students with a WSU student ID.

“I’ve studied this for a long time,” she said. “I’ve got quite a repertoire, a list of pieces that I’ve worked on over the years, and since I have this affinity for France — which is my second country, really, because I do have dual nationality — I lean heavily toward French organ pieces.”

Aside from the organ, Davis also pursues singing, and continues to play the piano, though she does not perform anymore.

“My father was an amateur singer,” she said. “My mother was an amateur violinist, my two sisters and I, we all sang in the car, we were all members of the choir, my parents met in the church choir where I took my first organ lessons, so that’s a natural thing for me to

do. That’s my other instrument, if you will — human voice.”

Davis said she decided to start the Wednesdays in Wiedemann concert series in order for the WSU community to marvel at the immense organ that sits within the hall.

“Now it’s three times a year, so that’s not a whole lot for everybody to hear this magnificent organ in this room, this wonderful hall,” she said.

“Ever since 2007, I’ve had this idea to bring this magnificent organ to everybody on campus and everybody in the community, really.

“This is all recorded, there are CD archives of everything I’ve ever played here. I haven’t listened to everything, but it’s mainly to show off this gem of the university campus, and to bring it to students who live very close by and bring a half-hour free admission concert.”
