Election Commission calls Shocker players, coaches off SGA special election meet President Trump BY MATTHEW KELLY
The Election Commission created last month by the Student Government Association has called off the special election it was appointed to oversee. An SGA press release cited a lack of candidate interest as the commissionâs reason for the cancellation. âWe are sad to report that due to no declaration of candidacy applications or withdraw of applications, the Election Commission has decided to deem this election ineligible to carry out,â the release stated. SGA called the special election to fill the freshman and underserved
populaces senator positions introduced this session. The underserved populaces senator position was created to serve minority students, first-generation students, and low-income students. According to Chief Elections Commissioner Michael Brown, just one candidate filed for each position. Brown said that, because holding an election would cost money, the commission decided the two applicants should be appointed to the Student Senate. The Election Commission, comprised of six members, will be responsible for creating guidelines for the SGA general election in the spring.

Wichita State menâs basketball players and coaches met President Donald Trump Wednesday, according to reports from the universityâs athletic department. The team arrived to Washington D.C. Wednesday ahead of their game Friday in Annapolis, Maryland. Former Wichita businessman Mike Pompeo, now secretary of state, provided the team an exclusive tour of the White House, Paul Suellentrop of the athletic department reported. Trump reportedly asked
the team their record, who the teamâs top player is, and if Gregg Marshall is a good coach. The team reportedly posed for a pictured with the President. That image has not yet surfaced. Since taking office, President Trump has had some difficulty getting championship sports teams to visit the White House. Villanova, who won the NCAA Tournament last year, reportedly wasnât invited for a White House visit. Villanova accepted President Barack Obamaâs invitation after winning the 2016 title. North Carolina declined the invitation after winning the title in 2017.

WSU expands in-state tuition offering to more cities BY ANDREW LINNABARY
Wichita State has expanded the cities it offers in-state tuition to, following approval by the Kansas Board of Regents Wednesday. Beginning in fall 2019, students from the following city areas can receive in-state tuition to attend WSU, according to a news release: Denver, Colorado; St. Joseph, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri and Illinois; Stillwater, Oklahoma; Austin, Texas; Houston, Texas; Killeen-Temple, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; and Waco, Texas. WSU calls it the âShocker City initiative.â The initiative began in 2016 for students living in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Kansas City. WSU says students in the program âsave about $9,200 each year.â The Regents also approved students from Missouri â outside the metropolitan areas of Kansas City, St. Joseph, and St. Louis â to be a part of the âShocker Select initiative,â an existing program through which students in certain communities from Oklahoma and Texas pay a tuition rate that is 150 percent of instate tuition. Students in the Shocker Select program save about â$5,800 each year,â according to WSU.
