unning a successful pumpkin patch can be a lot of work, but Becky Walters still manages to treat everyone who walks through the door just like family. Located about 30 minutes northeast of Wichita, Walters’ Pumpkin Patch serves about 30,000 people during their seven-week season. Becky Walter and her husband, Carroll, single-handedly grew the business to what it is today. With more than 63 activities to choose from, there aren’t many dull moments at the self-proclaimed Wichita area’s favorite pumpkin patch and corn maze. It all started in the late ’80s when Becky Watlers began growing pumpkins as a hobby on their 1,700-acre farm. “I’m no good with cattle or horses,” she said. “Four-legged animals scare me to death, and I couldn’t drive a tractor. So, growing pumpkins became my niche on the family farm. The first year we grew them, I made $583, which was twice as much as Carroll would have made on the milo that would have been planted on that same field.” Becky said at first, Carroll’s friends teased him for growing pumpkins on his farm. But now the Walters have 50 employees

during the season and 73 acres of fun for all ages. “It has just evolved,” Becky said. “We’ve just added on as we’ve grown. I was always the dreamer. I would think of new things that I wanted to add, and it was [Carroll’s] job to do it. Over the years, though, he’s become the dreamer, too. It’s been quite an escapade.” The Walters have thought of many award-winning ideas, including a pumpkin cannon, a zipline, paddle boats, jumping pillows and even a human gerbil wheel. However, even with those

extras, Becky said her favorite part is still going back to the field where it all started. “I guess my favorite thing is still growing the pumpkins,” Becky said. “I just love walking through the field. I love the people, love the school kids and all the things that go with it. But there’s still something about me, that farmer mentality, down in the dirt, I love it.” Customers come from near and far to pick their yearly pumpkins.

Creepy treats On Halloween, treats should be creepy. There are infinite ways of making your treats Halloween special. These include putting fake spiders on cookies, making mummy cupcakes and making a ghost out of bananas and cheerios. One creepy treat is to make standard chocolate chip cookies but when they come hot out of the oven, use a toothpick to draw out the melted chocolate pieces on top, creating spindly “legs” of chocolate across the

Costumes Costumes are required at Halloween parties. Period. If you haven’t bought your costume yet, visit Spirit Halloween at 2121 N. Rock Road and 4600 W. Kellogg, located in Towne West or Halloween Express at 11333 E. Kellogg, to find the perfect costume. Homemade costumes work great, too. Cardboad boxes, sheets or towels, tulle and wire hangers are useful pieces to create a frame for your costume. Search the Internet for ways to turn your closet into a costume.
