Power calling with a punch The 100 Women/100 Bookshelves campaign for the new Discovery Center Library got some added punch when their new mascot showed up at a recent call-a-thon. “Rosie” was on hand at the Watershed Café as volunteers worked the phones to spread the word about the bookshelves initiative and urge people to become “One of 100 Women” for the Discovery Center. The Watershed Café hosted the event, which quickly turned into an informational and financial success. An additional $12,000 was raised in a very short period of time and immediately soared to $24,000, thanks to a matching Challenge Grant which is in effect through the end of the year. A confirmed “YES” on the phones sparked cheers from the pool of callers and lots of fist bumping from “Rosie”. Library Director Kelly McBride kicked off the 100 Women/100 Bookshelves campaign during the month of December with a “Rosie” theme. Her reasoning: “Rosie the Riviter” was a popular rallying cry for women to work for the cause during WWII, and the theme continues to serve as an emblem

of women who step up and pitch in. “Through the years it has been the women in our community who consistently paved the way for creating and sustaining a quality library,” said McBride. “We’re counting on 100 strong, visionary women to step forward once again for the Discovery Center Library.” The results of the call-a-thon bring the total to 43 who have already stepped up, with more coming in each day. A $1,000 gift – which can be spread over two years – puts the donor’s name, or the name of a loved one, on a bookshelf in the new library. The Osceola village board came to an unofficial consensus on Thursday to abstain from appointing anyone to the seat left open by Rod Turner’s Dec. 12 resignation, instead opting to leave the question to voters in the Spring Election. Two board members, Bob Schmidt and Van Burch, expressed interest in choosing a nominee from the roster of candidates who had recently

expressed interest in filling Carol Otto’s seat. “I feel comfortable choosing from this list,” said Schmidt. “I like all the candidates we interviewed,” said Burch. “Now that we have the candidates, in my opinion we could choose one. … I had planned on (making a nomination) tonight.” But trustees Deb Rose, Roger Kumlien and Stephen Bjork argued for waiting until the election.
