Rep. Stafsholt announces Senate candidacy in Wisconsin’s 10th District

Wisconsin Assembly District 29 Representative Rob Stafsholt announced his candidacy for state Senate in Wisconsin’s 10th District in Osceola Nov. 20. His announcement was made at Core Products surrounded by friends and colleagues vowing to represent the people of the 10th District in Madison.

“It’s an honor to be here today with all of you and announce that I am running for the state Senate,” he said. “We need to make sure that our voices, and our values from this part of the state are not ignored in Madison. While I’m proud of the number of accomplishments that Wisconsin Republicans

How to ‘talk turkey’ about politics at Thanksgiving dinner Helpful advice for civil conversation

Thanksgiving is all about just that: giving thanks. During such a divisive climate in the United States, however, the dreaded talk about politics is bound to come up at some Thanksgiving dinner tables. In order to ease the tension, Kim Gearin and Lisa Erickson of Better Angels have some advice to depolarize those conversations during the holiday.

Better Angels is an organization created after the 2016 election

with the intention of bringing people together with conflicting political viewpoints and focusing on civil conversation. By focusing on commonalities, and not on changing minds, people soon realize that they are not all enemies.

Despite leaning in different directions of the political spectrum, Gearin and Erickson are able to bring those ideas to table and even argue that maybe they don’t belong there in the first place.

“I would suggest that the dinner table is not the best time and place for political conversation,” says Gearin. “You might decide ahead of

time to not have a political conversation over Thanksgiving dinner, and instead talk about gratitude and family.

That isn’t to say you can’t have political conversations about pressing issues when you’re all together, but maybe not during mealtime, in part because other people are captive in your conversation.”

While talking ahead of time to avoid political talk may work for some circumstances, Erickson argues that being stuck at the table during those conversations might be the reason they emerge during the holiday.

Osceola PTA funds record number of grants

The Osceola PTA presented the School Board of Osceola a check for $11,191.91 to fund teacher grant requests and student needs. This is the largest gift the PTA has donated to the district. “We received over $15,000 in grant and funding requests.

We were able to fund almost all of the requests this year. We are so thankful for the support of the School Board and leadership of the district. It also would not be possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers and community support,� stated Wendy Rider, PTA President.The PTA is continuing to look for support and volunteers for its largest event, the Spring Carnival, scheduled for March 29, 2020. Our winters can be long and dark and the project will transform downtown into a magical wonderland with twinkly lights in the trees that line the streets. The lights will bring holiday cheer and draw shoppers and patrons to the downtown district in the evenings throughout the entire year.

As a collaborative project, it will take some expense upfront—an expense that comes to an estimated $5000 if we light 15 trees around town. The installation will be done by volunteers estimated at 75 hours of manpower. We need our community to help support the “Lumi-

nate Downtown� project.

Our merchants will be helping to fund some but we can’t rely on them for the entire budget. We want to let the general community know that if it’s something everyone will enjoy and everybody helps some, it doesn’t always have to be on the shoulders of our small business owners or any one organization. As long as we can get a good base, we will light as many trees as we receive funding for this year. We expect the new LED lights will last for at least three to five years and will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

These are the good old days

A

Happy Thanksgiving to you. I hope you get to enjoy the company of friends and family over a meal and drama free conversation.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, beautiful in its simplicity and, in my opinion, an essential exercise for everyone to experience. Finding something to be grateful for is good for our mental health and family relationships.

Even though 53% of those surveyed dreaded Thanksgiving dinner because politics might come up, a great meal with famand friends is worth it. And, Publisher ily let’s be honest, we can hear that embarrassing story about your Tom Stangl childhood at least one time a year, right?

Whenever we get the first few hard freezes, my mind travels back to the Thanksgivings of my childhood. As early as I can remember, I always looked forward to Thanksgiving.

I was the fifth of six children in my family, so when I was 10, I had two siblings away from home.

I noticed that my parents would get excited to have their entire family home again. I was glad to see my siblings, mainly because it pleased my parents.

We never travelled to extended family gatherings for Thanksgiving, so the weekend was a great time to catch up with cousins as well who were home for the same reason. Like many families, we would play pickup games of football or cards to give us more stories for future gatherings. The more embarrassing, the better.

When I left home, I was anxious to come home to be around family and recapture the feeling of being a child again. When you are away from home, there’s nothing quite like a short visit to help reconnect. And in some cases, a long weekend is plenty of time. What’s the saying about fish and relatives smelling after three days?

When I married and had children, I longed to have my own family Thanksgiving. With another family involved, I had a whole new group to meet and learn the embarrassing stories. You can never truly know too many embarrassing stories about family.

After the death of my parents, Thanksgiving became about my wife and children. We have been gathering for years and as our family has expanded with a marriage and grandchildren, each celebration brings another reason to be grateful.

Being on the other side of the child-parent dynamic, I can understand why my parents looked forward to having their children all together. I think we all want to recapture something from the past.

I believe we want to look back because it’s easier to recall the past since the past is a known quantity. The future is unknown and we are unsure, but the past can be comforting, even if we change the way we remember events.

There’s nothing wrong with this thinking, as long as we recognize it for what it is and don’t make a habit out of living every day this way.

And, as Carly Simon sang in her 1971 hit song “Anticipation,” we should, at least for a few hours on Thanksgiving, “stay right here ‘cause these are the good old days.”

Enjoy the day. Be thankful, be kind and don’t be the person that eats the last dinner roll. No one likes that guy, even on Thanksgiving.

ometimes, I think that certain ailments are like a “hard reset” of sorts for the human body. It always seems that stressful situations build up causing my brain to “reboot” in the form of a migraine. When I do get one, they’re bad - really bad. So bad, in fact, that I’m incapable of doing anything.

You may never guess by meeting me, but I have anxious tendencies and near-constant levels of worry that can sometimes manifest themselves in the physical. I wouldn’t consider myself a chronic migraine sufferer, but I can pretty much guarantee one every couple of months at the least, and they are almost always stress caused.

Lo and behold, a little over a month into the job, I start feeling a bit “off” for a few days. This is what’s known as the Prodrome phase. Symptoms and length of time can vary from person to person, but it typically lasts a few hours to a few days and includes fun symptoms like irritability, depression, fatigue, muscle stiffness, inability to focus, etc.

When you’re in the Prodrome phase, you never really realize it.

You just wonder to yourself, “Why am I feeling this way?” I typically feel it for several days, but it’s the next phase that lets me know I was in the first phase all that time.

That is the Aura phase.

All of the sudden, something in my brain goes, “click!” and I feel bizarre. The next, and most undeniable symptom is seeing auras, or partial blindness. In this case, I was at a store talking with the clerk when I felt that “click!” Then I could only see half of the clerk’s face while speaking with her. That moment doesn’t last long, so it means it’s time to get somewhere quick before the next phase kicks

in That is the Headache phase.

This is the moment where I am out of commission. It’s always about four or five hours, but the severity ranges from “terrible headache” to “this is it – I’m going to die.” So, all I can do is curl up and lay there until it’s over. Usually I try to fall asleep, but it can be severe enough that an elephant tranquilizer couldn’t put me out.

Excedrin, an ice pack, darkness and silence are the next few hours of my life, until the next phase comes along.

That is the Postdrome phase For one or two days after the headache is done, I always feel pretty cruddy, which is where I’m at as I type this. There is always a residual headache that I can feel when I blow my nose, cough or exert any kind of pressure to my head. There is a general malaise and difficulty concentrating coupled with neck and back stiffness.

It’s not fun, but at least you know you’re almost out of the woods.

How do we keep our democracy healthy?

R

epresentative democracy is based on a simple premise.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that ordinary citizens can judge complex public policy and political issues â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or at least grasp them well enough to decide who should be dealing with them.

But the significance of that premise isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t simple at all. It means our countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Columnist that future depends on the quality Lee Hamilton of democratic participation by its citizens. So, in an era when our democracy appears to be under great stress, what must we do to keep it healthy? Here are some steps I think we need to take.

First, we have to protect our elections. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear that malign actors want to hack them or at least influence them. In the past we tended to assume that our elections were fair and accurate, but we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take that for granted any

more. This also means ensuring the independence of the judicial branch, which is critical to protecting the integrity of elections, and of the media and sources of fair, unbiased information.

Second, we need to expand our democracy in appropriate ways and fight efforts to restrict the vote. Plenty of politicians want to handicap or exclude voters they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like, and this sort of manipulation of our system is as big a threat to its integrity as outsidersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attempts to hack it.

Third, keeping moneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role in elections within bounds is crucial.

Money will always have a place in elections, but we need to keep it from disproportionately affecting voting outcomes.

Organizations that urge their members to vote play an important role, too. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re â&#x20AC;&#x153;special interests,â&#x20AC;? of course, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what it means to live in a pluralistic society. The more different groups are active, the more diversity you get in office and the better the representation for the entire population.

Individual participation also

matters, which is why civic education is vital. We need always to be mindful about how we teach and encourage people to participate â&#x20AC;&#x201D; through efforts to educate and register voters, citizen-led advocacy, and the like.

When Lincoln wondered at Gettysburg whether a â&#x20AC;&#x153;nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure,â&#x20AC;? it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just a rhetorical question. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an undecided one, and each generation has to answer it. Just because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come through the challenges of days past doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re destined to now. We need to pay attention and do our part to keep our democracy healthy.

all looked a lot like feathers. There was a stiff wind blowing and I had no idea when the feather had parted ways with my hat.

Just then, I met a young pair of Germans heading up the hill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do you speak English?â&#x20AC;? I asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes!â&#x20AC;? they told me (because all Germans do, it seems). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lost a feather. You havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen it, have you?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;A feather?â&#x20AC;? the young man repeated.

It struck me that this was the stupidest question Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d ever asked anyone, and I was filled with relief that I would never see these two people again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Actually, yes,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I saw one near the donkeys.â&#x20AC;?

I knew exactly where the donkeys were. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right by the donkeys?â&#x20AC;? I asked, rather incredulous. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes, I saw it when I stopped to take a photo.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thank you so much!â&#x20AC;? And I raced back down the hill, back to the donkeys. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It pays to ask for help!â&#x20AC;? I told myself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth asking stupid questions!â&#x20AC;? I added in my little sermon to myself.

Except there was no feather.

I searched and searched and could not find it anywhere. Even the donkeys lost interest in the project. I was there so long the Germans came down the hill again and found me.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Did you find the feather?â&#x20AC;? the young man asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, no I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t,â&#x20AC;? I confessed. He took me to where he had seen it.

There was no feather. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ah well. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t waste any more time on this!â&#x20AC;? I told the considerate German couple. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, good luck!â&#x20AC;? they said as they headed down the hill.

Since I still hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t made it to the top of the mountain, I kept climbing. I went all the way to the top, to the place I had looked at the Mediterranean the night before.

And there was my feather, lying no more than a foot from where I had sat. I held that feather in my hand, amazed.

Because, you see, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really think I was going to find that feather. I thought the whole idea was crazy from the start. But once I shared the idea with that nice German couple, the possibility of finding it seemed more real, more attainable. Sometimes we just need someone else believing in our ideas to make those ideasâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;even the crazy onesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;seem possible.

It was only because they believed I could find the feather that I did.

THE POSTSCRIPT The lost feather

I

lost a feather the other day and I understand this does not qualify as news.

But I want to sayâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for the recordâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;that this was a really nice feather. I paid good money for it and pinned it to my favorite blue hat. I wore that hat out for a walk, one evening, when it was chilly.

This was the last night that my husband, Peter, and I were in Frigiliana, a little Columnist town in the south of Spain. I walked Carrie Classon to the top of the very steep hill where, four hundred years ago, a Moorish castle stood, guarding the town from invaders. The invaders eventually made it there anyway and the castle was knocked to the ground. Only the amazing view over the Mediterranean remains.

And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where I went walking when I lost my feather.

There was no hope of finding it that night. The sun was already down. So, the next morning I headed out, looking for my feather.

When I got to the foot of the hill (a small mountain, really) I realized what a foolish idea this was.

I recognize that this issue is a complicated one.

While this legislation would not have solved all of Northwest Wisconsin’s healthcare issues, it would have been one step in a series of long-term solutions. In a time of divided government, apparently even small steps forward are too much to ask of our Governor.

I will be pushing my Assembly colleagues who voted for this bill, both Republicans and Democrats, to seek an override of the Governor’s veto.

In the past, I have called for bipartisan efforts to address our healthcare issues. While the Governor’s calls for similar bipartisanship ring hollow, I am confident that our Assembly body can rise above these partisan games and come together for the good of our state.

This reduced hour requirement would have been especially helpful to the healthcare providers in my district, which borders Minnesota. CNAs working in Minnesota only need 75 hours for CNA certification, while certification in Wisconsin requires an additional 45 hours. This additional training limits efforts to recruit CNAs to our area. The healthcare professionals in my district all talk about the shortage of CNAs and the difficulty of recruiting CNAs. This legislation would remove this barrier of entry for Minnesota CNAs that want to come and work in Wisconsin, and it would incentive Wisconsin residents interested in becoming CNAs to stay in the state.

Christmas is right around the corner! You may be thinking, “How dare you bring up Christmas before Thanksgiving!” Or maybe you already have your Christmas tree up and decorated as you read this sitting next to your lit fireplace sipping a Pumpkin Spice coffee. Whether you like it or not, Christmas is on the minds of many already…and so is Thanksgiving. These two holidays need not compete. They both publish great realities.

Both are opportunities to see the goodness of God. Thanksgiving is a great primer for the Christmas celebration.

Personally, I think of Thanksgiving as a true blessing to have as a holiday that leads us into the Christmas season. Thanksgiving, as the name suggests, is a day in which we give thanks. It’s appropriate to give thanks for many things, such as our families, our friends, our jobs, our home, and many other blessings. It’s also a time to give thanks to many people, such as our spouse, our children, our parents, and many others. You don’t need any particular affiliation in order to give thanks for these many blessings. However, there is one source that requires that we give thanks, and he is God. Jesus is the greatest gift

the Father has given us. He sends all of us sun, rain, snow, and various forms of his grace. Yet, Jesus alone is the one gift that he requires we accept. You can’t stop the sun from shining and you can’t make it rain, but you can choose to receive the ultimate gift of eternal life by believing that Jesus is God and that he died for your sins and rose from the grave.

Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is a gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” There are several significant elements in this verse that are cause for giving thanks to God. One, grace is God giving us his favor despite our sinful nature that deems us unworthy of his presence.

His grace is him offering us salvation through Jesus even though we do not deserve it. Much like giving your children Christmas presents even when they have been naughty. You do it because you love them, and so it is with God. His love for us compels him to grace. His love compels him to offer us his greatest gift, his perfect Son, Jesus.

Two, faith is our response to his grace. When we believe that our sinful nature disallows us to spend eternity in the presence of a perfect holy God, and that God has bridged that gap with the perfection of Jesus as our substitute, that is a response in faith and from faith.

Three, this is not your own doing. According to

this text in Ephesians 2:8, both grace and faith are a gift from God, and for both we appropriately give him thanks. Just a few verses earlier, in Ephesians 2:1, we are told that we are spiritually dead in our sins. How does a dead person choose to live? They don’t…they can’t.

This is why we need the perfection of Jesus Christ as a gift that we are unable to achieve ourselves. We cannot work hard enough or do enough good to make ourselves right with God. If we could and we did, then we would have the right to boast in our own work of salvation. Yet, God being the only provider of salvation through Jesus makes it so that none us may boast, but that he gets the glory and we receive the joy.

Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of this great gift, Jesus.

Thanksgiving is a time to prepare our hearts and minds with thankfulness for this gift. So, during your Thanksgiving meal this year, take time to thank God for all the many blessings that he has provided for you. But don’t forget to thank God for the ultimate blessings and the ultimate gift of eternal life in Jesus.

Dresser faces five-year sewer billing confusion

The Village of Dresser discussed issues with the quarterly sewer flow that involves a billing complication with the Village of Osceola at their Nov. 4 meeting. For several years, the Village of Dresser was being under billed due to miscalculated wastewater flow into Osceola’s treatment facility.

According to village attorney Tim Laux, an operator in the Osceola wastewater treatment plant was taking readings in the wrong location from 2014 to

2016, causing an estimated $60,000 to be under billed, and is now owed to the Village of Osceola.

“Where are we going to get $60,000 dollars?” asked trustee, Grace Bjorklund. “We don’t have $60,000 this year, next year, or the year after that.”

During his presentation on the matter, Laux indicated that this error was discovered in 2016 and that it was “their employee’s fault” with “no error on the Dresser side.” Because of this, the billing proposal made

by Osceola was met with some opposition by trustee, Karen Andrie.

“It was their fault,” she said, “and then to ask us for $60,000, and $30,000 a year is the lowest they’ll go?” To clarify the situation, President Bryan Raddatz stated, “That was what they proposed.

We can counter.”

The discussion for the rest of the matter focused on what that counter offer might look like. Proposals from $10,000 for six years, to $20,000 for three years were floated before deciding that getting a confirmed opinion from Laux was necessary before moving forward with any action.

Rich also loved the outdoors. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. He spent a lot of time hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons. There are many stories to be told. But you never asked him where his “Honey Holes” were.

Richard is survived by his children: Darren (Judith) Johnson, Denae (Chad) Tolzman and Jason Johnson as well as his 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers Dan (Mel) Johnson and Roger Johnson.

Services will be held Nov. 21 at North Valley Church, Centuria. Visitation is at 4 p.m. Service begins at 5 p.m. Dinner served after the service.

Larry Robert Wanous of Sisseton, S.D., formerly of Osceola, died Nov. 13, 2019, in Sisseton. He was 82.

He was born June 12, 1937, in Britton, S.D. to Robert and Menota (Denson) Wanous. He grew up on a farm and graduated from Kidder High School. He joined the Navy in June of 1955 and served until May of 1958.

He lived in Osceola where he managed Ringers Inn bar and dance hall, was the Chief of Police, managed PY’s Bar, and worked for Greene Implement. He returned to Sisseton in 1973.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle; children, Shane Wanous and Sherrie Hilleson; stepchildren, Julie Kuehn and Kristi (Mike) Tchida; three sisters, Juanita (Jack) Rhode, Judy (Bob) Sundling, Jane (Dick) Sorenson; brother, Rob (Jeanne) Wanous; seven grandchildren, Justin and Matthew Hilleson, Audrey Wanous, Alex (Jen) and Todd Suurmeyer, Mackenzie and Kayden Tchida; one great-granddaughter, Josephine Suurmeyer; mother-in-law, Ruby Benting and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Nov. 18 at Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the matter with marijuana?

For some people, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dangerous If Wisconsin were to legalize cannabis, teenagers, pregnant women and people with a family history of serious mental illness should avoid it, doctors warn.

As Wisconsin and other states eye possible legalization of marijuana for medical or recreational use, many effects of using cannabis are still not fully understood.

But one thing is certain: Scientists advise against use by young people over concerns of negatively impacting their brain development. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Children and adolescents are really the place we have to look the most,â&#x20AC;? said Dr. Angela Janis, director of psychiatry for the University of Wisconsin-Madisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University Health Services.

Until people reach their mid-20s, their brains are still developing. Janis warns that adolescents who use heavily may face reduced attention spans, memory and concentration â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and increased chance of dependence.

Janis should know: Not only is she a psychiatrist, but she is also the medical director for the Minnesota-based medicinal cannabis firm, LeafLine Labs.

The U.S. Surgeon General earlier this year specifically warned young people and pregnant women against using cannabis.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has proposed legalizing it for medical use in Wisconsin.

The harm of marijuana use among adolescents and young adults is one reason Smart Approaches to Marijuana opposes legalization, said Colton Grace, a spokesman for the group, which supports a â&#x20AC;&#x153;health-first approach to marijuana policy.â&#x20AC;? States including Colorado where recre-

ational marijuana is legal, have begun grappling with the problem of young people consuming ever more-potent cannabis in edible and other forms.

Yet, the latest research finds that youth marijuana use â&#x20AC;&#x153;may actually decline after legalization for recreational purposes,â&#x20AC;? according to a study published in September in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics.

It based the findings on 1.4 million responses to youth behavior surveys.

The result, researchers wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;is consistent with (earlier) findings and with the argument that it is more difficult for teenagers to obtain marijuana as drug dealers are replaced by licensed dispensaries that require proof of age.â&#x20AC;?

In his opposition to full legalization, Grace also points to research that early cannabis use can cause irreversible damage to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s IQ. And an analysis of several studies has raised concerns about a linkage between cannabis use and mental illness.

A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2017 report found that â&#x20AC;&#x153;cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia, other psychoses, and social anxiety disorders, and to a lesser extent depression.â&#x20AC;?

Ziva Cooper, a member of the committee that wrote the report, said in a series of tweets that the committee â&#x20AC;&#x153;did NOT conclude that cannabis causes schizophrenia.â&#x20AC;?

Instead, the committee only found â&#x20AC;&#x153;an #association between cannabis use and schizophrenia.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Borderline psychoticâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Lena Stojiljkovic, a 21-year-old UW-Madison music education student, knows first-hand the risk of consuming cannabis.

In the fall of 2016, she was hospitalized for a psychotic break and diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. She said her

doctors pointed towards her cannabis use.

She began smoking cannabis habitually in her senior year of high school. One week she used marijuana three times and became delusional. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought my friend was communicating to me in different ways that werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t normal and I would try convincing my mom she wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t awake, that she was sleeping,â&#x20AC;?

Stojiljkovic said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it was out of the norm, though. I thought it was just the effect of weed at the time.â&#x20AC;?

However, she started smoking marijuana more frequently when she came to college and realized something much more serious was happening. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was smoking weed three, four times a day, every day, so that by the time November came, I was completely delusional,â&#x20AC;? Stojiljkovic said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was borderline psychotic, as all the doctors told me.â&#x20AC;?

Stojiljkovic supports legalization because she believes regulation could make cannabis use safer.

But she cautions against ignoring the possible risks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the big point is that people need to understand that it has its benefits, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also that whole psychiatric side where it is linked to psychosis. I know that personally because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happened to me multiple times, and the biggest thing is that people need to understand that that exists, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bigger issue than what we know,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Janis acknowledged there is a strong association to psychotic disorders, but the â&#x20AC;&#x153;exact association we do not know.â&#x20AC;?

Early use of cannabis, particularly among 14- to 16-year-olds, will double or triple the chance of a psychotic disorder, Janis said. She especially cautions young heavy users who have relatives with certain mental health problems.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Family history,â&#x20AC;? she said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;is still the number one risk factor of schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.â&#x20AC;?

Vaping, poison calls spike Cooper, research director of the University of California-Los Angeles Cannabis Research Initiative, acknowledged there is concern about consuming cannabis through e-cigarettes, known as vaping.

As of Nov. 13, there were 2,172 reports of severe vaping-related lung damage, including 42 deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Earlier this month, the agency said it had identified a possible culprit.

It found an additive, vitamin E acetate, in lung fluid samples from victims, who had obtained the vaping cartridges off the street, or from other informal sources.

Hunting deer with rifles doesn’t increase gun violence MUNCIE, Indiana – It’s deer-hunting season in the Midwest, but there is no evidence that the increased use of rifles causes more violent crimes, says a Ball State University researcher.

Paul Niekamp, a Ball State economics professor, has analyzed daily crime data with statistics from deer hunting seasons spanning 20 years and 21 states for his study, “Good Bang for the Buck: Effects of Rural Gun Use on Crime.”

“The results of this paper provide strong evidence that enormous increases in recreational long gun prevalence are not associated with any increase in violent crime,” he said. “In the least populous areas, where long gun prevalence increased 530%, estimates suggest that male violent crime actually decreased.”

Niekamp’s study provides the first estimates of the effect of rural recreational gun use on

crime. Each year, more than 10 million Americans, comprising 18% of all American gun owners, use firearms to hunt deer during restricted dates.

“The enormous changes in firearm use caused by hunting regulations are unparalleled by any other policy in existence,” he said. “There are no other policies that induce 600,000 Wisconsin males or 530,000 Michigan males to systematically and temporarily carry and use firearms.”

The study found that that there are approximately 12% fewer violent crime incidents on the first two days of firearm season for the state agencies in charge of less than 1,000 individuals.

Corresponding estimates for agencies covering populations between 1,000 and 50,000 indicate that long gun prevalence is 50%-125% higher, while all estimated effects on violent crime incidents consistently

hover around zero.

Estimated effects on long gun prevalence disappear for agencies covering more than 50,000 individuals, which aligns with lower hunting participation in urban areas, the study also found.

He cites several reasons deer hunting does not lead to an increase in violent crimes, including: Hunting is a time-consuming activity that is inherently incapacitating, which may decrease crime. Various sources of deer hunter data suggest that hunters spend upwards of six hours per day in the field, with additional time spent processing harvested deer. Males may be too preoccupied to use their guns nefarious purposes.

Hunters may face more regulation than other gun owners. These regulations may improve firearm etiquette and discourage high-risk individuals from hunting.

The Balsam Fir, a native of Wisconsin, is a truly superb Christmas tree. It has short, ¾”-1½”, flat needles, with a rounded tip. The needles are singly attached and form a very soft feather-like -like spray of foliage. It’s lovely green color and it’s fragrant, fresh-cut cut aroma make it one of the most desirable trees on the market. et. It’s cones are about 3 inches long and ripen in the late summer/ early fall. They fall apart while still on the tree, so o you rarely see cones on the ground although you may ay see partial remains of the cones on the tree.

Spruce

Spruces are mostly found in cold climates. Needles are short, ½”-1” long, stiff and sharp. The needles protrude from all sides of the twigs. The strong branches are excellent for holding ornaments.

The Spruce is especially attractive when it’s carefully cultured to an appealing density and shape.

White spruce is a valuable, native Wisconsin Tree. Because of the long fiber of the wood it is highly prized for pulp. It grows best on heavier soils and needs more moisture than pines. It’s blue-green foliage is very attractive and makes a good Christmas tree. The Black Hills Spruce is a variety of White Spruce which has darker blue-green colored needles.

Eastern White pine The White Pine is the tree that made Wisconsin famous in the old logging days and is a native of Wisconsin. The soft long needles that have blue-green color with just a hint of white make this tree a favorite of pine buyers. The slender and flexible needles are 2”-5” long, in bundles of five. The boughs weep gracefully when hung with ornaments. Years of meticulous shearing create a beautiful, dense, conical shaped tree that stands straight and retains its needles throughout the Christmas season.

Scotch pine

The Scotch Pine is a bushy, full tree with 1½”-3” long needles that are stiff, flattened, twisted and spreading. The needles have a green to blue-green color and grow in bundles of two. The Scotch Pine was imported from Europe to be grown as Christmas trees and has many varieties. Thesee include: Austrian Hills, Belgium, East Anglica, French, Riga, Scottish Highland, and many more.

You also may find that growers have other varieties of trees, which may include Canaan fir, Concolor (white) fir, Serbian spruce and Meyers spruce. These varieties are not very common, but you could inquire about them.

eer season, pheasant season, duck season and now ice fishing is knocking on the door. But how safe is the ice and how can you know what’s safe and what’s unsafe. To get all the answers, techniques and methods of checking ice I had to contact the Fish Whisperer, Jon McCorkle and here is 70 years of expertise talking!

“One f the ways we used to check if the ice was thick enough to walk on when we were kids was to jump on it. With age came more wisdom. We learned to throw rocks down onto ice to see if they would break through Wild River the ice. If that succeeded we sent out the smallest guy. Next we would send Trails out the biggest guy. We send out the biggest and tallest guy, hoping if he breaks through more of him will be sticking out of the water and we can also see how deep the water is.”

“Eventually the big tall guy figured out that it’s a good idea to use an ice chisel to test the ice ahead of him. This system seems to work pretty well, but we can’t seem to get him to test the strength of the ice by jumping on it after he breaks through a couple times.

Survey data show that rural Americans own different guns for different reasons than the population average.

Although rural Americans are twice as likely as urban Americans to own a firearm, they are more likely to own long guns used for hunting, protection from animals, and sporting use.

“Another reason that hunters may be a low-risk sample is that patient individuals may select into deer hunting,” Niekamp said. “Deer hunting is often characterized as an activity in which an individual sits in a

tree stand for hours on end, waiting for a deer to walk by. It is possible that only patient individuals are willing to participate in this gun-related recreational activity.”

The study also found that alcohol-related arrests of juvenile males fall by 22% and narcotic offenses fall by 15% at the start of hunting season, suggesting that firearm hunting may have positive effects on behavior.

In rural areas, additional recreational opportunities like hunting may assist in keeping juveniles out of trouble, the study found.

It’s getting harder to find good ice testers anymore. I try to introduce a big tall guy to early ice fishing every year or so. Ya got to keep the sport alive don’t ya know.

Sometimes I can talk him making duck drives but they’ll complain about not being able you keep their powder dry. It’s really hard to keep an early ice fishing partner.

trucks to be driving all over the lake. Where is the adventure in that? I’m really going to have to find some younger big tall guys that have never experienced the adventure of first ice,” said Jon. “You haven’t lived until you get out there on the first ice that is crystal clear and you can actually see the fish swimming under your feet and hopefully not with you. If you do actually hook into a fish it’s like looking over a cliff when you

first see the fish. It’s the sensation like when someone sneaks up behind you and gives you a shove when you’re looking over a cliff. It scares you! Hopefully the fish is coming to you and not the other way around”.

Much needed crunch!

A

fter Thanksgiving, I’m ready for crunchy food after an abundance of soft, mushy food.

Let me explain. First, Thanksgiving is a much-anticipated meal. Who doesn’t love mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, stuffing, corn soufflé, green bean casserole, and warm baked rolls? They all make my mouth water. Besides the fact that each of these is delicious, they’re all missing something else—anything crunchy.

I love crunchy food. Crunchy Wild Chow tortilla chips, raw carrots, and a salad loaded with crunchy cabbage Lisa Erickson and croutons make my mouth happy. After eating Thanksgiving leftovers, I’m ready for a full-on mouth workout that my ears can hear. A crunchy salad activates all my senses. I can hear it, feel it, taste it, and smell it. Maybe that’s part of the reason people like chips so much?

This salad is extra crunchy. It has lots of cabbage, carrots, and crunchy peanuts. Plus, it’s super healthy after a week of indulgent eating. Skip the crunchy chips and have a salad without any regrets!

Crunchy Thai Salad 2 cups cabbage, chopped 1 carrot, chopped, 2 cups kale, chopped 1 cup broccoli, chopped ½ red pepper, chopped 2 scallions, sliced thin, green parts only ½ cup roasted peanuts Dressing: ¼ cup spicy Thai red chili sauce ¼ cup rice vinegar 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. sea same oil In a small bowl, mix the spicy Thai red chili sauce with the rice vinegar, sugar and sesame oil.

Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, carrot, kale, broccoli, and the red pepper. Pour the dressing over the top of the salad and toss to combine.

Plate and top with the scallions and peanuts. Serve immediately.

CANDIDATE: Stafsholt runs for state Senate seat FROM PAGE 1

Following Stafsholt’s initial announcement, Link responded to some of his remarks on her candidacy.

“Rep. Stafsholt points to my not being part of the club in Madison,” she said in a press release.

“I’m not a political insider, that’s true. I’m proud of my local involvement and experience building a business. That real world experience will be invaluable going toe to toe with Sen. Schachtner.

I’m ready to be an effective leader for western Wisconsin, a region growing and with great opportunities, but often forgotten in Madison.”

Both candidates will challenge Sen. Patty Schachtner who Stafsholt claims has changed during her time in Madison after her election in 2018.

“Madison changes people, and I’m sorry to say that our current senator is one of those people.

Madison changed our

current senator into a rubber stamp vote for the liberal Dems and that, my friends, is another reason why I’m running.

I know where I came from, and I’m proud to be from this area. There is no way that Madison will change me.”

Stafsholt continued to voice his plans to challenge the policies of current Gov. Tony Evers drawing comparisons to former Gov. Scott Walker and claiming that Evers is “out of touch” with areas of Wisconsin outside of Madison.

“This past winter, newly elected Governor Evers introduced a budget that flies in the face of our vision of how to move this state forward,” he said. “Governor Walker and I worked together to protect taxpayers to create a climate where small-business owners, like myself, could expand or start a new business.

We began to cement important reforms into place to make this state better, but Governor

Evers is trying to roll all of this back.”

Claiming that Sen. Schachtner “stood by and watched” the reforms made by Evers “without saying a word,” Stafsholt ensured that he would do the opposite and that he is willing to work with the Democrats in Madison, saying, “I’m happy to cross party lines and work with my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to come to compromise for the good of the state.

Stafsholt concluded his announcement by thanking those attending including Rep. Gae Magnafici and President of Core Products International, Phillip Mattison, before turning his attention to his supporters one last time.

“I will work tirelessly over the next year to win your trust, your support and your vote,” he said.

“This campaign isn’t about ‘me’; it’s about ‘we.’

You are all my bosses, and I will never forget who I work for.”

The DNR released data Tuesday that shows the department had sold 538,643 licenses as of Sunday. That compares with 539,137 licenses as of the same date in 2018, a difference of 494 licenses.

The department has sold 1,352 fewer licenses that allow patrons to kill deer with firearms. As of Sunday, the department had sold 313,293 such licenses compared with 314,645 as of the same date last year.

to the county in January 2019. Boland explained that the “transition is nearly complete,” while still upholding the mission of lower recidivism rates and upholding current policies.

Since May, Boland has attempted to switch the mode of decision making in the CJCC from emotional decision-making, which “leads to a lot of bias,” to evidence-based decision making.

Boland defines the main reason for this change as ensuring offenders may be treated rather than incarcerated; the latter often promotes future offences.

According to Boland, the United States holds 5 percent of the world’s population and 25 percent of the world’s prisoners: “That number is too high and we can do better,” she says.

Treatment Court Program Probably the strictest program, Boland states that Treatment Court’s purpose is “to improve the safety of our citizens and reduce the destructive cycle of substance use and mental health disorders.”

Requirements for this program include: must be residents of Polk County, must be at least 17 years old, must have a substance use disorder, must be at medium or high risk on the COMPAS assessment, must have a qualifying legal charge, may not have participated in a Treatment or Drug Court in the past three years, may not be working as an informant for law enforcement, may not currently or prior have a felony sexual offense and may not be a violent offender.

During this program, participants are susceptible to two to three drug tests each week, 60 hours of community service, therapy and weekly meetings with parole officers among other requirements.

First Time Offender Program This program targets those offenders who are “typically law-abiding citizens,” and have “made a mistake,” according to Boland.

With this audience in mind, the First Time Offender Program aims to provide an opportunity for participants to stay out of the justice system

and have committed non-violent misdemeanors or engaged in low level felony behavior, with no prior criminal record.

Participants who complete a two hour class, pay a $200 fee and remain crime free for six months will not receive formal charges.

Treatment Alternative Diversion Program, TAD The TAD Program helps individuals with substance use issues and non-violent felony level behavior, aiding those people in the middle.

Eligibility depends on Polk County residence, an age of at least 17, are at low risk on the COMPAS assessment, agree to a substance use diagnosis and have not committed violent offences.

These participants work with a case manager to develop an individualized case plan to “address needs and put an end to criminal behavior,” says Boland. Taking six to twelve months to complete, participants who are successful do not receive formal charges.

Community Service Program The Community Service Program is offered to individuals as part of a restorative justice process. Boland is delighted that the CJCC has returned to the county because in this program, “it is great to work within our communities, alongside business and community members.”

To date, 718 hours of community service have been completed since May, equating to $7000 worth of labor.

Success Currently, the CJCC has an 80 percent success rate, with only a $130,000 annual cost to tax payers. While many of the supervisors gasped at this number during November’s meeting, Boland went on to showcase the big picture: $75,500 is covered by a grant and $54,500 is paid by tax payers.

In the grand scheme of things, if those participants were instead incarcerated annually, the cost to tax payers would be $528,000. So Boland clarifies that $56,000 annually to promote a safer county and lower recidivism rates is a significantly low cost to the dangerous alternative.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve experienced conversations where people seem to feel like itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s their opportunity to say something. Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a safer environment than at the workplace, or out with friends, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, and it usually ends up getting a little heated.â&#x20AC;?

Sometimes conversations like this are unavoidable and do get â&#x20AC;&#x153;heatedâ&#x20AC;? according to Erickson. In the event that the issues come up during Thanksgiving, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no way out, Gearing and Erickson have ways to ensure that a civil discussion can be had despite conflicting

ideas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you were to talk about politics, it should be more about listening and giving people opportunities to express their concerns and then validating those concerns,â&#x20AC;? says Gearin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about understanding.

By disagreeing with somebody right out of the gate, you create this environment of animosity toward one another where you could instead really listen, say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;thank you for sharingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and then move on to a better topic.â&#x20AC;?

To understand is to

listen to someone despite differing opinions. In order to do that properly, that person has to join a conversation without projecting their beliefs, according to Erickson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One way to approach difficult political conversations right now is not to enter with the intention of persuading someone to believe as you do,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the principles of Better Angels. We have to enter these conversations seriously wanting to know what people think and why. You might find that you may not have common ground on policy, but you might have common ground on the future.â&#x20AC;?

In the event that those conversations do become hostile, there are ways to recognize it and to douse the tension when the problem arises. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If someone is escalat-

ing the situation by raising their voice, or using â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;gotchaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; language, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not part of a conversation aimed at understanding each other,â&#x20AC;? says Gearin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in a conversation with someone who is getting agitated, loud, and angry itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay to say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be a part of this conversation anymoreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and to remove yourself.â&#x20AC;?

This method might work to deescalate a political conversation when involved in one, but there are also those caught in the crossfire of these conversations who can take control of the situation to turn the holiday back to friends and family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just an observer, which is nine times out of ten, you can actually and interrupt and redirect, saying something like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Maybe this conversation should be finished later.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Then,

maybe you can set up a time that the conversation can be continued away from the dinner table.â&#x20AC;?

For the more than 50 percent of Americans surveyed who dread the thought of Thanksgiving politics, Better Angels has plenty of advice, including a document titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;For Thanksgiving Conversationsâ&#x20AC;? that can be found on better-angels.org. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No political conversation and no party is more important than family ties,â&#x20AC;? says Gearin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It might take being assertive and stepping in and redirect the conversation, or it might mean talking respectfully about the issues if they come up, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to remember that this is a time to be with friends, and family, and to be thankful for everything we have.â&#x20AC;?

CANNABIS: Marijuana can be harmful when misused; it can be addictive and dangerous for some users FROM PAGE 9

using cannabis will lead to the use of â&#x20AC;&#x153;harderâ&#x20AC;? drugs. Dr. David Nathan, the founder of pro-cannabis Doctors for Cannabis Regulation, does not believe there is â&#x20AC;&#x153;such a thing as a gateway drug.â&#x20AC;?

The National Institute on Drug Abuseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research report on cannabis indicates â&#x20AC;&#x153;that marijuana use is likely to precede use of other licit and illicit substances,â&#x20AC;? but the majority of people using cannabis â&#x20AC;&#x153;do not go on to use other, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;harderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; substances.â&#x20AC;?

Grace points out that users can become addicted to cannabis itself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Marijuana is an addictive substance that can produce withdrawal and dependence, and the studies that show that are based on very low potency THC marijuana that is not representative of the higher potency stuff youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing on the market today,â&#x20AC;? Grace said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really know what, if any, ill effects the marijuana sold on the market today could be having on people.â&#x20AC;?

The CDC said people addicted to marijuana are three times more likely to become addicted to heroin. However, other drugs carry much higher risks, with cocaine addicts 15 times more likely and prescription opioid addicts 40 times more likely to become addicted to heroin.

Some research shows that cannabis may actually be an alternative drug for pain that can reduce use of prescription and illicit drugs. One advantage of marijuana is it does not suppress the respiratory system so it is not associated with fatal overdoses.

The Cannabis Question is a series exploring questions about proposals to legalize marijuana in Wisconsin.

Some studies show a correlation between medical cannabis legalization and reduced prescription drug abuse. A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the presence of medical marijuana laws was â&#x20AC;&#x153;associated with significantly lower state-level opioid overdose mortality.â&#x20AC;?

Other studies point in the opposite direction. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cannabis use appears to increase rather than decrease the risk of developing nonmedical prescription opioid use and opioid use disorder,â&#x20AC;? according to the 2017 study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry.

For Pewaukee resident Cari, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic disc disease, taking cannabis has allowed her to stop using gabapentin, a popular pain medication that is being seen more frequently in drug overdoses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just makes my quality of life better. I have minimal pain now,â&#x20AC;? said Cari, who asked that her last name not be used because cannabis use is illegal in Wisconsin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just more functional.

Being able to do more things and not have to live in that constant state of pain, which can be kind of debilitating.â&#x20AC;?

Driving while drugged Impaired driving is one of the major public health concerns of legalizing cannabis, yet remains one of the most difficult to measure. Cannabis use does double the chance of getting into a crash,

but, Janis said, it does not impact a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to drive nearly as much as alcohol. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no good test to assess objectively whether somebody who has recently consumed cannabis is impaired because of that,â&#x20AC;? Nathan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no good correlation between the measure and level of impairment.â&#x20AC;?

Some drivers suspected of having consumed cannabis may take a blood test to detect whether it is in their system. However, cannabis consumed up to 28 days earlier will still be detected â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even long after the intoxicating effects have worn off.

Some people mistakenly believe cannabis causes no driving impairment. In a 2017 survey, one-third of the students surveyed believed it was legal to drive under the influence of marijuana.

Even 27 percent of parents believed it was legal.

Data on car crashes in Colorado after legalization showed that the number of fatal crashes involving people who had cannabinoids in their bloodstream did increase. But the authors of that 2018 study warned against any historical comparison of crash rates because the state has heightened drug testing since legalization. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what that (increase) means,â&#x20AC;?

Janis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Does that mean more people in Colorado are using and they happen to have it in their system, or are more people with active, intoxicated THC being involved in the accidents?â&#x20AC;?

No ‘immediate’ plans for gun special session MADISON, Wis. (AP) — It doesn’t look like Gov. Tony Evers is going to call another special legislative session on gun control anytime soon.

Evers told reporters at a news conference Monday that he has no immediate plans to call another special session but he’s keeping the option open for the future.

Evers in October called a special session to pass universal background checks and a red-flag law that would allow family members and police to ask

judges to seize firearms from people who might pose a threat.

Republicans who control the Legislature all but ignored the governor.

Earlier this month they gaveled into the special session and immediately gaveled out seconds later. Evers said Monday he’s disappointed in Republicans’ lack of interest in gun control.

A student at Saugus High School in California on Thursday killed two classmates and wounded three more before killing himself.
