“Strange sculpture and other odd things.” It’s the tagline for art made at Sleeping Dragon Studios, where David DeMattia designs and crafts works of metal, clay and what-

ever else might inspire him.

The St. Croix Falls artist has a new show at the Watershed Café, featuring flying skulls, bats and dragons appropriate to the season, with a few dragonflies, moose and luminaries on hand for those interested in something a bit lighter.

On a Thursday evening in late October, a crew of plainclothes teenagers found their places on Osceola’s auditorium stage. Playful orchestra music drifted in through a speaker system and the students came to attention, singing and dancing their way across stage.

With opening night drawing near, the high school drama club was rapt with preparation for the two-weekend run of “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical stage comedy they’ve been working on since the start of the school year.

“We held auditions for the play on the second day of school,” said Kevin Carlson, an OHS English teacher who has directed the drama club for about 30 years.

Holing up on a Saturday afternoon to parse a government budget might not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but a lack of motivation to inspect page upon page of spreadsheet data doesn’t mean citizens aren’t interested in what happens to tax dollars.

Enter the citizens’ budget guide. The report breaks down lists of figures into graphs, charts and infographics, making the numbers meaningful to the average citizen. For those who’d like to keep tabs on local government spending, it’s a

solid starting point.

In late September, the Association of Government Accountants awarded Polk County a certificate of excellence for its 2015 “Citizen’s

Guide to the Polk County Budget.”

Osceola man dies in auto crash

A young Osceola man died Saturday evening while riding with a driver police believe was intoxicated.

According to a press release from the St. Croix C County Sheriff’s Office, Jord don Cloutier, 24, was riding with Bailey Martin, 25, New w R Richmond, in a 2005 Dodge D Durango shortly before 7 p p.m., Oct. 24.

They were eastbound on H Highway 64 in Somerset T Township when Martin llost control of the SUV and d drove into the ditch, rolling tthe vehicle.

There is a legal phrase: “Time is of the essence”, which means there is no fooling around with dates in a contract. If your youngster accidentally gets a tooth knocked out and you’d like to give the dentist half a chance to successfully replant it, “time is of the essence.”

Take the typical case where a child gets his front tooth knocked out in a hockey game. He skates over and hands it to his parents and Ànishes the game. Later on probably the next day - they’ll go see a dentist. Too late, my friends. No chance for saving that tooth.

The proper reaction

would be to take Johnnie, skates and all, immediately to the dentist. This is an emergency. A tooth replaced within 30 minutes has a 90% chance of being saved, but in two hours the success rate drops considerably.

To improve the chances of a successful replantation of a knocked-out tooth, rinse it in tap water (don’t scrub it), replace it in its socket and have the patient hold it in place with his or her tongue on the way to the dentist.

Jeffrey is a five month old soft brown Tabby with a soft coat and personality. He is a gentle young fellow who appreciates the same. He plays hard with the rest of them, chasing, tumbling, skittering across the floor. But when it is time for a cuddle, Jeffrey is all about quiet time. Jeffrey came to the shelter with his brother, Ed, both strays. Ed has already found his forever home. Jeffrey is ready to take the next step and transfer his love and devotion to an adoptive family.

A few weeks back, we mentioned a little kitty that was left on our doorstep with a hand written note, asking to be taken care of. Well, that short hair Classic Tabby with mittens became Omar. He came with a nasal virus and spent the next two weeks in a foster home. Omar was added to our adoptable pet list on our web site and was adopted immediately. This happy ending is exactly what we wanted for him. Our adoptable cats remain available until they are adopted.

In addition to Ed and Omar, Torbie coat amber, orange tabby Jeremy and tortie with mittens, Pumpkin, found new homes. Still waiting is Phyllis, the plump white and grey, loving and playful girl from last week’s column. Olive, seal point Siamese mix and Sonya, short hair blue grey and white. These two were abandoned in a rental home without food or water. They are now spayed and ready to leave that chapter behind.

Bernadette is a declawed, long hair who loves to play with other cats. Bruce, black and white, and Doyle, orange tTabby, are playful full grown young cats. Inky and Allie are young females, black and black and white. Petunia is a sweet, mostly black Tortie with a medium coat, cute as can be. Orange tabby Skeeter has also returned from foster care and is hoping to meet his new family this week.

The scary stuff begins Sunday

H

appy Halloween to you all. With the holiday falling on Saturday night, I imagine it will be quite a sight. Remember, moderation is the best policy and your children will notice if too much candy goes missing, no matter how you try to frame the discussion that it is “for their own good.”

Remember to turn your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Halloween because Standard Time returns, bringing the scary cover of darkness.

We will continue losing chunks of daylight through Dec. 22, the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. The long, slow crawl back to more daylight begins on Dec. 23.

Publisher I believe that the whole Standard Time – Daylight Saving Time Tom Stangl changes need to come to an end.

The rationale behind the change is outdated, and I believe the adjustment to the time change is unhealthy for all involved.

I usually rant about this topic twice a year, so I apologize in advance.

In doing some research for the column, I learned that Daylight Saving Time was implemented during World War I, primarily to save fuel by reducing the need to use artificial lighting. Although some states and communities observed daylight saving time between the wars, it was not observed nationally again until World War II. I understand saving energy in times of national emergency. I do. But it doesn’t always turn out that way.

In 1973, during the Arab Oil Embargo, year-round daylight time was tried. It was repealed then next year. One reason it was repealed was because of an increased number of school bus accidents in the morning.

Accidents usually rise when the clocks are moved.

Some observers attribute the huge spike in accidents on the first Monday of DST to the sudden change in the amount of light during driving times. Others attribute the accidents to groggy drivers who are still adjusting to new sleeping patterns.

Some people claim that they would miss the late evening light, a presumably similar number of people love the morning light. And projects, postponed during the sun filled summer, will be tackled with new vigor when the sun sets an hour earlier each day.

Congress appears to have felt we were not having enough of a difficult time so in 2007 they passed a law starting Daylight Savings time three weeks earlier and ending it one week later. This cost US companies billions to reset automated equipment, put us further out of sync with Asia and Africa time-wise, inconvenienced most of the country, all in the name of unproven studies that claim we save energy.

It also forever changed Halloween, making a generation of children trick or treat in the daylight.

Again, I understand safety, but part of the fun of Halloween is running around in the dark and getting candy.

So, enjoy your last few days of Daylight Saving Time. Savor the extra hour of sleep that you have been trying to catch for nearly half a year and get ready for the darkness.

We are losing daylight in chunks until the first day of Winter on Dec. 22. We won’t start climbing back out of the abyss until Dec. 23, and it will be just a few seconds at a time.

Unfortunately, no clock can make that time pass more quickly.

Shifting gears

T

he young legislator made it clear where he stood --- the public needs to know who and which groups are financing Wisconsin elections.

“Wisconsin voters have a right to know the source of all the money being poured into the state from Washington DC and beyond,” he wrote in a press release timed Matt Pommer for the introduction of a bill to accomplish that goal.

“Our proposal would require any political group that spends money in Wisconsin to disclose where their money comes from,” the press release continued. The press release was dated March 9, 1997.

The legislator was Rep. Scott Walker. He would later win three elections for governor and try to become the Republican nominee for the president of the United States.

Walker would shift policy positions on several issues during the 71 days he was an official candidate to head the national Republican ticket. Perhaps most notable were on immigration and ethanol---hot topics in nearby Iowa.

Now the governor is supporting changes in campaign finance law and who will be in charge of election operations in Wisconsin. Under Republican legislation a commission dominated by politicians would replace the panel of six retired judges who compose the Government Accountability Board (GAB). The governor would get to appoint the executive director of the commission. The Republican-controlled State Senate would get to confirm Walker’s choice.

The changes would occur by mid2016 --- just in time for the fall elections.

Equally important is the Republican legislation racing toward legislative approval that open the financial spigots for campaign contributions. Unlimited money could be raised by so-called independent issue groups. As long as they don’t specifify for whom to vote, there is no disclosure of the sources of their funds.

Importantly the issue groups could consult and apparently coordinate activities with candidates themselves during the political campaigns. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said a goal was to “protect a free and vigorous debate” by shielding issue advocacy

groups from any state regulation.

Jay Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin, said allowing the coordination and the unlimited and undisclosed campaign money brings about “almost the complete deregulation of campaign finance in Wisconsin.

The bill follows the line of reasoning of the State Supreme Court decision as it ended the John Doe investigation into ties between Walker’s gubernatorial campaign and conservative groups.

Gerald Nichol, a former Republican district attorney who is chair of the GAB, has sharply assailed the reasoning of the State Supreme Court decision in the John Doe case. He suggested two of the four majority decision judges should have recused themselves.

“You get off the case and that protects the system. It gives it integrity, and right now I think the Supreme Court has a problem with their integrity,” Nichol has said. He adds the John Doe ruling was a “very poorly written decision.”

The door may not be fully shut on the case. There is speculation it may face review in the federal courts because it exceeds campaign finance decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jarchow and Republicans Vote for Unlimited and Secret Corruption Three bills designed to severely limit the ability to investigate political corruption, dissolve the Government Accountability Board, and dismantle many of the current campaign finance laws are rapidly making their way through the Republican-controlled legislature.

A bill that was just passed in both houses and signed by Governor Walker bars investigators from using the “John Doe” law on politicians or public officials suspected of bribery, corruption, or other political misconduct. The John Doe law is a powerful tool used to conduct criminal investigations without the knowledge of the suspect, and was used to convict four Walker

aides and investigate the governor for illegal coordination with conservative groups during the 2012 recall election.

In addition, the Assembly voted to dissolve the nonpartisan Government Accountability Board, replacing it with two boards filled with equal numbers of Democratic and Republican appointees. This change will set our elections and ethics boards up for conflicts of interest on both sides and for continuous gridlock and inaction.

The last, and perhaps most consequential bill is a campaign finance bill that vastly expands the power of wealthy donors and weakens disclosure laws. The bill, just passed in the Assembly, doubles the amount of money a donor can give directly to a candidate, and more importantly allows individuals to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections without disclosing their iden-

tity. Corporations and other entities would be able to donate unlimited amounts directly to political parties and legislative campaign committees as well.

Representative Jarchow voted for all three of these bills. State Senator Harsdorf voted for the John Doe restrictions.

Governor Walker is expected to sign the two remaining bills should they reach his desk, which is likely. The votes for all of these bills was split on party lines, with all nearly all Republicans voting in favor and all Democrats either voting against or recusing.

Honest and representative government is a Wisconsin tradition, and a value that is shared by everyone across the political spectrum. So my question to voters is this: Should we be willing to sacrifice our collective belief in open, clean govSEE LETTERS, PAGE 13

Ever since the Polk County fair – no, really even before that – everything has felt discombobulated. I’m a caregiver of a caregiver.

My mom has been taking care of my grampa for at least two full years now. He’d never admit how much help she’s had to provide to him until about three months ago. Two years ago, Grampa had a stroke and, typical of his generation, didn’t say anything for a day or two figuring it would all work out on its own.

His eyesight was affected, along with his balance.

Since he lived alone and across the driveway from me, I’d get a text from Mom to go check on Grampa to see if he was o.k., since he wasn’t answering his cell phone.

It became my worst fear to be the one that would find him dead someday.

For the first part of my mom’s caregiving time, Grampa insisted that he was fine and could handle his daily affairs. Mom would do his grocery shopping, write out his checks for his bills and do the needed heavier housekeeping.

Very slowly, things worsened. Eventually, she had to sign the checks, fix small dishes he could microwave for his meals because cooking on the gas stove was too dangerous, sign him up for Meals On Wheels so he had at least one completely balanced meal, and make sure his household was clean, organized and set up for someone who’s blind.

As a result of the drugs used to ameliorate his stroke symptoms, Grampa got diabetes. And, since his eyesight was poor, Mom did all the blood sugar testing.

What a relief it was when it went from twice a day to only once! She took him to every doctor appointment – which seemed to be more and more frequent as his health deteriorated.

Because of his lack of eyesight, he’d call Mom on speed dial in case of emergency. He never learned to feel for the “9” button and hold it down. Nor would he push the button on his “necklace” – the thingamajig that would call 911 if he clicked the button when he fell.

The first bad fall (there had been several prior that caused big bruises and scrapes), he cut his head open.

mad! He had to go to the ER to get checked out for concussion and it had to be by ambulance.

Then it happened. I got a frantic call from Mom that Grampa had fallen in the bathroom, she’d already called 911 and could I get over there to see if I could clear the way for the ambulance and help in any way. My fiancé and I ran over as fast as my short, middle-aged legs would carry me. Being ever the gentleman, my beloved looked in on Grampa first and found him laid out on the floor, legs splayed out – one at a very awkward angle. My EMT brother showed up next and helped make him comfortable while we waited for transport.

One hip broken, it began the spiral: A hospital stay, rehabilitation at an eldercare facility, and then pneumonia and near-death, back to rehab and physical therapy. Therapy that could never quite do enough to get him back on his feet and functioning. He kept insisting on going home. Finally, a social worker at the facility helped him realize that, while he was doing better, he wasn’t walking or toileting independently.

Until he could do that, he couldn’t be alone. He needed to be in a care facility that had 24/7, on call folks.

So he agreed – as long as when he got better, he could move back home.

Correction The Oct. 21 report on the St. Croix Falls City Council meeting asserted that the library had requested a temporary beer and wine license for a fundraiser hosted by the Polk County Dems. In fact, the Polk County Dems requested the license for a fundraising event to be held at the library. The library does not have affiliation with any political party. At the meeting, library director Sarah Adams, depicted in a photo with an inaccurate caption, was speaking to the policy implications of the request, namely that current library meeting room policy does not allow alcohol in the meeting rooms, and prohibits fundraising by any group except city departments or the Friends of the Library.

The frenzy of children running door to door on Halloween night can feel a bit overwhelming to the guardian of a young child who is learning the ropes of soliciting candy door to door. A brief autobiography of the Valley underground Part I—Introduction “Underground life,” or sub terra vita, like any homespun tale, starts the legend at home. The story possesses many highs, some lows, successes and failures, and far too many of the latter to leave out. Amid uncountable laughs, and some of the bitter sadness, the creative biography (not a history) of the Valley’s underground takes the good and bad parts, to resolve lessons and to live well with courage earned through experience.

As with saga, the story serves its Columnist own end, as a piece of the puzzle, of “what happened here, and why?”

Tim Krenz The underground in the St. Croix Valley carries parts of the past, some Sub Terra Vita of them ruins and lore, in many harmless stories of childhood adventure with some harsher stories of adults from different eras. It all happens among hidden relics, from youthful playgrounds to the playing fields of the ageless and aged.

Some of the story may occur on the literal surface plane of the world, the street-level and farm-field, or forested-, hill views. It all, on the other hand, relates to sub terra, below the viewpoint of the average living world.

Some underground locations only remain in memory, for some tunnels, cellars, alleyways, holes, crevices, crags, caves, etc., no location can exist except in the telling of these stories of Valley living. One rule,

though, must remain: names, proper and placed in perfect remembrance otherwise, must remain runic and undecipherable to the code.

A final requirement of the underground: That the simple, good story does always end well, whether or not guilty of good cheer, fellowship and camaraderie.

And if it ends in something less than completely happy, the stories might carry something we can learn.

The spirit of the story, the intent of this brief, creative-biography, finds the triumph that derives of sharing good meaning, for the alive and the awake.

Hopefully, these tales can show themselves as the things worth telling. The acts of life lived in our Valley that make it more interesting than we realized.

Hopefully, readers will judge this sub-series of chronicles worthwhile reading and recalling, someday much later.

And where does one begin this story of the underground in our Valley? Properly, it must begin at the start … at the house where I grew up, by the railroad tracks, in our St. Croix Valley town of Osceola.

From very young, to now, in several different houses, many different communities and after traveling a fair stretch of America, I find my life and my experiences in many ways have connected to things and structures below the ground-eye level. I find a theme of sorts, and much of that theme sub terra.

Unlike Dostoevsky’s “Notes from Underground,” my living in the theme might seem mundane, but with interesting highlights. Still, it all goes back to the house where I grew up on Third Avenue, in Osceola, many decades ago. …

As a result of my job, I have a lot of resources I can give my mom to help. But I’ve noticed a few things that don’t always get covered in those materials -things the experts never talk about -- even at Caregiver conferences: How people don’t talk to their kids about exactly what they want their kids to do for them, when they can’t be alone anymore. How angry you get with your elderly loved one when they seem to live in a world of denial about their own abilities and insist you do exactly what they want, ignoring your instinct to get more help. And how anxious you feel because you haven’t got a social life anymore, because you can’t be a part of civic organizations and volunteering or go on a vacation longer than a couple of days -- your schedule changes on a dime and no one can rely on you. How, sometimes, someone else has to show you that you’re wrecking your own health trying to do everything you think your parent expects of you. How relieved you feel when the professional folks take over because it’s beyond your skill base (how do professional caregivers do it for THEIR loved ones?!?). How utterly exhausting it is to wait for the inevitable.

Being a caregiver for someone you love is tough.

Most people want to do the right thing for their parents and will take on more and more, so their parents can be as independent as possible. Because they love their parents and want the best for them, or because they’d would want the same for themselves someday.

Lots of reasons. But not enough caregivers reach out for help. And there’s a whole network of help in Polk County. Help for not only your parent, but for you – the caregiver.

If I were to recommend one thing, though, it would be this: Talk about how you want your end of life transition to happen with whomever it is you will be relying on to care for you. Go through the “What if’s” and have a really in depth conversation about what you expect when you can no longer do for yourself. And there will be a time when you can no longer care for yourself. Be willing to hear that the loved one you pick to care for you isn’t at all prepared to take on such a huge responsibility and have a Plan B (and Plan C).

Stop pushing off the topic till later and be realistic, so your caregiver doesn’t suffer. What does a peaceful transition look like to you? How will everyone know you died well?

If you’re a family caregiver, there are resources available. In Polk County call the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 715-485-8449 for support groups, DayFriends at 715-485-8762 for respite day care and Interfaith Caregivers for in-home respite volunteers.

On a completely different topic, Interfaith Caregivers is moving into a larger space! You may recall us rolling out a statistic put out by the National Center on Aging: In Polk County, we will move from 14 percent elderly population to 27 percent or more in less than 20 years! That means that service providers for the elderly need to begin to plan for a very busy future involving more people to help.

WEEKLY MEDITATION Dead? Or Alive?

If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 1 John 3:14 There’s a bunch of dead people around. Zombies are fictional characters that are ‘dead’ people walking around as though alive. If a Zombie touches you, you may become one yourself. The real danger with Zombies though is that they look human until it’s too late.

Although Zombies

themselves are fictional, they often show up at church. “Christian Zombies” are people who, by all outward appearances have Christ in their lives. They do all the ‘right’ things Christians do. They go to church.

They may teach Sunday School or hold a home Bible Study. They may even be pastors of thriving organizations...er…uh… ministries. The problem is, Christian Zombies have no real life.

They have no blood flowing through their veins. Their eyes stare straight ahead and fail to focus on what’s around them. As a result they are unwilling or unable to see the needs of peo-

ple. They spend so much time worrying about this rule or that rule they miss the story of grace.

They spend so much time seeing what’s wrong in the world they fail to see what’s right. They label people according to their faults and sins and miss the fact that for all their bruises, everyone is created in God’s image.

These Zombies have the appearances of life but lack the life-giving flow of blood, the blood of Jesus. The Spirit of God has never been allowed to flow freely through their veins. Unfortunately, like the fictional Zombies, they can infect those around them with the same poison.

Ellen Diane Schiefelbein of Cottage Grove, Minn., died Sept. 29, 2015. She was 74.

She was born in Spencer, Iowa, to farming parents, L Louisa and Dale Kelley.

S Some of her favorite childh hood memories were spent w with her grandparents in L Lake Okoboji, Iowa. She lloved Spirit Lake, the beauttiful surrounding orchards a and the quiet, peaceful ttime spent fishing with her g grandpa, Lester Kelley and g grandmother, Della.

When she was 14 she m moved to Osceola where sshe later met and married h her husband of 56 years, Aaron. Aaron and Diane raised their four children in Cottage Grove. When her youngest child was in kindergarten she became a cosmetologist and sold Avon. She was an avid reader and enjoyed music and art, nature, flowers, plays, films and collecting pottery.

She is survived by her husband, Aaron; children, Joann (David) Binder, Lisa Schiefelbein, Stevan (Tina) Schiefelbein and Nick (Brenda) Schiefelbein; grandchildren, Nathan, Joanna, Abby and Christina Schiefelbein, Katie Binder and Gerrit and Dina VanderWaal; siblings and in-laws, Dan Kelley, Mary and Phil Qualle, Dawn Kelley, Linda Natzel, Gloria and Gordon Lutz and Bud Kelley (deceased); many nieces and nephews.

A small private service for immediate family will be held on the beautiful banks of the St. Croix River, a place she cherished.

Lyman L. Samo of St. Croix Falls died Oct. 19, 2015, at Good Samaritan Center. He was 92.

Lyman was born Nov. 17, 1923 in Reinbeck, Iowa to W William and Bertha Samo.

H He graduated from Reinb beck High School in 1941.

H He served in the Army Air F Force during World War III and was honorably disc charged as a SGT in 1945.

O On Nov. 17, 1946, he married h his wife Beulah at Ames, IIowa. He graduated from D Drake University with a M Master’s degree in Psycholo ogy. Lyman was Director o of Mental Health Services ffor the State of Illinois and llater was an Education Psychologist at the Southern Illinois University Medical School. In his free time he enjoyed reading, studying, was active in AA, helping many friends and was on the board of directors at Butterfly House.

Lyman was preceded in death by his parents, wife Beulah in 2010 and sister Christina.

He is survived by his daughter Paula (Dan) Kramer of North Branch, grandchildren Elizabeth (Sean) Weitner of Stoughton, Wis., Eric (Kelly Billstrom) Kramer of North Branch, six great-grandchildren, nieces Janice (Ed) Nichols, Linda (Mike) Fagen and Nancy Barron.

Jordan M. Cloutier of Osceola died Oct. 24, 2015, as the result of an automobile accident. He was 24.

Jordan was born Dec. 27, 1990, in New Richmond to B Brian and Lori Cloutier.

He graduated from Osceolla High School in 2009.

At the time of his death he w was a carpenter with Wittsstock Builders in Somerset.

In his free time Jordan e enjoyed hunting, fishing, ssnowboarding, dirt bikes a and remodeling houses.

Jordan is survived by his sson Keegan, parents Brian a and Lori Cloutier, brother T Tyler, sister Alexa, mother o of his son Margaret Germ main, grandparents Arlen and Jannis Rud, John and Betty Cloutier, numerous other relatives and an abundance of friends.

Bust nets 180 marijuana plants Members of the St. Croix Valley Drug Task Force on Thursday searched the William Jos sephs property, 7 728 90th Ave. in A Amery, looking for A Albert Allman.

According to the Allman probable cause rep port, a total of 180 m marijuana plants a and over 1,800 g grams of marijjuana were seized d during the search.

Members of the ttask force and ofJosephs ficers from the Polk County Sheriff’s office went to the Josephs property after learning that Allman was living inside of a camper on the property and allegedly involved in the manufacturing and distribution of marijuana.

Officers located William Josephs, 58, and Albert Allman, 46, inside a garage on the property. Officers observed numerous large marijuana plants hanging from the ceiling of the garage and a plastic bin containing suspected marijuana buds.

Allman was carrying a scissors in his hand that was believed to be used to trim marijuana from marijuana plants and had suspected marijuana flakes on his clothing.

Josephs told the officers that the plants were Allman’s property.

After obtaining a search warrant for the residence, the outbuildings and the property surrounding the residence, the officers began their search.

Located inside the house were items consistent with the use and potential distribution of marijuana.

A small camper located to the northwest of the house contained numerous items related to the use and distribution of marijuana.

A total of 100 marijuana plants were removed from the rafters of the garage. Officers located another 80 plants drying in the rafters of a small chicken coop.

A marijuana grow operation that had been cultivated was located to the east of the house.

Several large marijuana stalks were recovered, some with buds and some with leaves.

Josephs told the officers that Allman had been living in the camper for the last week, adding that Allman brought the marijuana to the property four days ago. Josephs added that Allman was cutting the marijuana buds and placing them in a bucket in the garage. Josephs denied selling marijuana and denied any knowledge of a marijuana grow operation.

He did admit to personal use of marijuana inside his residence.

168 grams were removed from the camper. A sample from one of the bags tested positive for THC. Inside the garage, the officers found two baggies containing 110 grams each of marijuana, as well two boxes containing suspected marijuana weighing 666 grams and 722 grams respectively. Three baggies/containers containing marijuana were found in the home, weighing a total of 36 grams.

Samples from the marijuana in the garage and burnt residue from a pipe located in the garage all tested positive for THC. Also located in the search of the Josephs residence were numerous firearms including a .22 caliber revolver, Remington rifle, Remington shotgun, Savage bolt action rifle and Ruger .22 caliber pistol. A criminal history check on Josephs showed he was convicted of a felony in 1981 and cannot legally possess firearms.

Allman was arrested and charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place, manufacturing marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the probable cause report, the officer was told that the pair had left the bar on foot south bound towards the gas station. Several people pumping gas pointed out the two men walking quickly away from the bar.

The officer got the two men to stop, noting that both men appeared very intoxicated.

The officer identified one of the men as Melvin Ott. The other man said he was walking Ott home. Both parties denied any knowledge of a disturbance at the bar. After asking questions, Ott asked if he was being detained. After the officer told him that he was until the investigation was concluded, Ott shouted, “fine, handcuff me” and turned around, extending his arms. The officer knew that Ott was experienced at fighting and appeared agitated, so the officer handcuffed him.

The other person told the officer that he did not want to talk without a lawyer. The officer placed the man under arrest. Both men were taken to the car.

Patrons outside the bar told the officer that Ott had been belligerent, threatening other patrons. Several patrons said that Ott was the instigator and the other man was trying to get him home. The officer interviewed a patron who was allegedly threatened by Ott. Ott told the woman that he was going to burn her house down and have intercourse with her twice.

The woman did not want to press charges, and another patron corroborated the story. Ott went to another woman, but was confronted by her boyfriend and told to leave.

The officer released one of the men to a sober party at the scene and transported Ott to the Polk County Jail after he refused a preliminary breath test (PBT).

About the crime stories

The crime stories on this page are based on the Probable Cause reports from different law enforcement agencies.

Probable Cause Reports (PCs) are simply a report stating the “Probable Cause” that the arresting officer had at the time of arrest. During Xcel Energy’s drawdown of the St. Croix Falls flowage, adventurous hikers have been able to explore terrain covered in water since the dam was built in 1907. Upwards of 45 students are involved in the production, reported Carlson, and they’re almost off book. Music director Vickie Donahue works with the students on songs.

An adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s “Princess and the Pea,” the original musical opened off-Broadway in 1959. It moved to Broadway in short order, where it won a Tony Award for best musical and has inspired, over decades, three television adaptations. “‘Once Upon a Mattress’ was the vehicle that got Carol Burnett her start,” said Carlson of the actress who first brought the play’s heroine, Winnifred, to life.

Burnett went on to star in her own television variety show, which ran from 1967 to 1978. In a 2005 TV adaptation of the musical, she played the story’s villain, Queen Aggravain.

As the musical’s title implies, the script tells the tale of the “Princess and the Pea” while poking fun at fairy tale tropes. This might be what has given the musical its longstanding popularity. More than a half-century after it made its debut, Carlson says “Once Upon a Mattress” is dependably popular with audiences young and old, and with

the high school players.

“We did this play 13 years ago,” recalled Carlson, who was a member of the drama club as an OHS student, and went on to minor in theatre in college. “It was supposed to be the musical on the auditorium stage, but construction was delayed and we ended up having it in the elementary school cafeteria. It’s a fun play and I wanted to do it on this stage.”

House manager Hallie Schwarztrauber says the play is what first got her interested in drama club, when she was a student at Osceola Elementary.

“It was the last play performed at the elementary school,” she says, echoing Carlson’s timeline. “So students got to see it there, and it got me interested in drama club.”

Schwarztrauber participated in drama club all four years at OHS. Now, 22 and a student at UW - River Falls, she says she jumped at the chance to get involved again when the position for house manager became available. “Once Upon a Mattress” will be her second undertaking in the role and, if all goes as expected, it will end happily ever after.

“Once Upon a Mattress” plays Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14, 7 p.m. at the OHS Auditorium.

Matinees will be held Nov. 8 and 15 at 4 p.m.

OHS program prepares students for engineering careers

Leading up to his second year as a tech. ed. teacher at Osceola High, Ron Dorn returned to school this summer.

One of 800 teachers from across the country to complete core training in Project Lead The Way (PLTW) at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), Dorn attended class weekdays during an intense two week training.

On weekends, he returned home to Grantsburg.

“I put 50,000 miles on my car last year,” he offered with a smile.

PLTW is a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based track that aims to “prepare students for the global economy through world-class curriculum, high quality professional development and an engaged network of educators, students and professionals.”

The program offers students one engineering-based class per year, starting with core classes Principles of Engi-

neering (POE) and Introduction to Engineering Design (IED). Schools can then choose specialization courses like Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), a class Dorn also teaches.

Completion of the coursework can potentially result in college credit for students who successfully complete the program. Of 34 students who participated in PLTW last year, Dorn estimated that 6 to 8 of those went on to receive college credit.

“We get the students who really want to be here,” Dorn said of the success of the program.

“They have good attitudes and [produce] good quality work.”

This is Dorn’s second summer at MSOE. Participation in PLTW requires teachers to receive instruction in the program’s foundation training and any of the specialization courses offered at the participating high school. In addition to the PLTW courses, Dorn also teaches more traditional tech ed classes like Metals and Automotive.

Despite the differences in engineering and practical coursework, Dorn says he sees a good number of his traditional tech ed students interested in PLTW. “Principles of Engineering is a lot of physics and math,” he said, noting the class was rigor-

ous enough to eliminate students who weren’t serious about the challenging coursework.

If all of this studying sounds like too much work over a summer break, don’t feel too bad for Mr. Dorn.

“We did get to go to a Brewers’ game,” he said.

For instance, a short list clarifies what might be included under broad terms such as “fixed charges” (insurance premiums) and “capital outlay” (buying a road grader for the highway department).

The guide also gives glimpses into what the county does for its cit-

izens, serving some 27,000 meals to elderly or disabled residents protecting the rights of victims and witnesses.

The budget overview is the result of a lot of legwork, much of it done by the county’s administration department.

“We take a look at the budget information and get ideas of performance measures from different departments,” said Polk County Administrator Dana Frey. “Then we have some discussions about what to include,

and write the guide. … It’s a lot of time, but I think it’s time well spent. The more people who understand budgeting and county finances, the better. All government financing, really.

It’s their money after all.”

But making the information interesting and comprehensive is a design challenge that requires its own research.

An infographic included in the 2015 guide, for instance, depicts where a hypothetical tax dollar

goes. It was inspired, said Frey, by another chart – one that broke down spending for an English five-pound note.

“Budgets are complicated and boring,” he said. “But they’re important, so you want something that’s easy for people to look at and understand.”

Taking care of business: Chieftains defeat Altoona

The Osceola Chieftain football team came into the first round of the WIAA tournament as heavy favorites over the Altoona Railroaders. After all, the Chieftains were the 1-seed and the ‘Rails’ were the 8-seed. With Osceola playing on their home turf in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Robert W. Vesperman athletic complex, what could go wrong?

Well, it could be the weather which could cause the favorites to turn the ball over or it could be the age-old sports killer: overconfidence. The Chieftains did not turn the ball over and deemed Altoona as the worthy challengers that they were and then executed as a conference champion should. Osceola was outstanding on offense, very effective on defense and special teams did their part as well.

The Rails took the opening kickoff and behind the deft running by senior Trent Peterson moved the ball 26 yards before the Chieftains defense caused a turnover, the first of two for Altoona.

The first Osceola drive of the night set the ttone for the evening. Ethan Ellingsworth rran for five yards, then Tanner Johnson for 110, Ellingsworth for 27, Teddy Gildersleeve ffor 18 and then quarterback Tucker Hazzzard, behind a great push from the offenssive line, hit pay dirt on a QB sneak from a yard out.

“The offensive line does a terrific job at b blocking and opening up the holes to run tthrough,” Ellingsworth said. “We wouldn’t b be where we are right now if it wasn’t for tthem.”

The Chieftains showed their diverse offfensive potential the next time they had the b ball. This time it was a 10-yard run by Gilde ersleeve followed by a 50-yard TD pass from H Hazzard to Joe McKelvey. Midway through tthe opening quarter it was already 14-0 for tthe Chieftains.

As effective as the Chieftains were in tthe first quarter, the second quarter was p perhaps even more entertaining. Hazzard c capped a 13-play, 64-yard drive with his seco ond rushing touchdown of the night. Hazzzard dented the end zone on a quarterback d draw from two yards out to make it 21-0.

H Hazzard made it 27-0 less than six minutes llater on a 10-yard scramble around the left side.

Soccer season ends for OHS

It was apparent early in the season that the Osceola Chieftain soccer team was in rebuilding mode. The Chieftains lost 13 seniors from the 2014 team and had only one senior, Jacob Lauridsen, to build around in 2015.

To compound the degree of difficulty, Osceola also had a new coach, Nathan Anderson. Anderson was not only a new coach for the team but was new to the school district so he had to spend much of his time getting acclimated, not to mention learning what his team had to offer.

Although the Chieftains did lose most of their games this year, their goal of beginning the rebuilding process was achieved.

“We started the year very young,” Anderson said. “We only have one senior and aimed for improvement as our main objective.

“In the beginning teams were able to score at will on us. They decided to score, and we offered very little resistance. By the end of the year, we were making teams work to score and making a few goals for ourselves. We have learned how to defend as a team and shut down space to not allow time on the ball.”

Osceola closed out the 2015 season with a loss at Rice Lake against a very talented Warrior squad. The first time the Chieftains played Rice Lake early in the season the Warriors had a 10goal advantage by halftime.

This time Rice Lake gained the expected win but the final score was 8-0 in a game that went the full 90 minutes.

“We only have one senior this year, Jacob Lauridsen,” Anderson said.

“He was one of our captains and I could not have asked for a better one.

The Osceola Chieftain volleyball team was able to earn a 3-seed for the WIAA tournament and hosted the 6-seed Ellsworth as a reward. Osceola lived up to the higher seed by dispatching the Panthers in three straight games. After finishing off Ellsworth the Chieftains went to Prescott, winners of the Middle Border Conference, and were seeded number two.

Osceola won the first game at Prescott but the Cardinals bounced back, winning the last three games to advance to the Regional championship.

Prescott lost to Altoona in the Regional final three games to two.

Osceola fell behind Ellsworth in the first game and four times trailed by three points before evening the score at 10. Ellsworth once again pulled to a three point lead at 18-15 before the Chieftains pulled even with three straight points. Osceola faced game point trailing 2423 but won the last three points to win the first game 26-24.

The second and third games were not as close as the Chieftains pulled out to early leads and eventually won game two 25-20 and game three by the same score.

early lead at Prescott with a hard-fought 2725 win in game one.

Prescott rebounded to win the next three games 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19.

“The girls played hard even through rough officiating,” Osceola coach Holly Johnson said. “I was proud of them.”

Osceola ended their season with a 5-2 conference record which was good for a second place tie behind only Prescott.

Osceola will lose one important member, Emily Carlson, from the 2015 team.

Cancer therapy and coping with hair loss A breast cancer diagnosis can catch a person off guard and drum up all types of feelings. Many people diagnosed with cancer become anxious about treatment and any potential side effects it may produce.

Hair loss is one side effect widely associated with cancer treatment, though not all cancer patients will lose their hair. Chieftain runners end season at Sectionals

The Osceola Chieftain cross country team pointed toward the Middle Border conference and Sectional meets where they wanted to be at their best. Osceola ran well at both meets but this year, for the first time since 1997, the Chieftains will not have a runner at the State meet. In order to qualify for State you either have to be one of the top two teams at Sectionals or one of the top five individuals not on a qualifying team.

The Osceola girls placed fifth overall with Ashland and Northwestern claiming the top two spots respectively. The Chieftain boys finished eighth with Northwestern placing first and Rice Lake second.

“We had a tremendous season,” Osceola coach Rachael Robinson said.

“Both teams improved as a whole and as individuals. When we look to the future and the talent we have coming back I am very excited about what both teams may be able to accomplish. Both teams will be a force to be reckoned with. The boys return all seven

School Board Proceedings The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education for the School District of Osceola was held in the district office on September 23, 2015. The meeting was called to order by President Timm Johnson at 6:00 P.M. with the following in attendance: Rosanne Anderson, Craig Brunclik, Pete Kammerud, Keri Uzpen, CNS Director Bernadette Strobach, Superintendent Mark Luebker and Business Manager Jenny Frank.

A Keri Uzpen/Pete Kammerud motion was made to adopt the agenda. Motion carried.

A Craig Brunclik/Rosanne Anderson motion was made to approve the minutes of the Regular meeting held on September 2, 2015. Motion carried.

A Keri Uzpen/Pete Kammerud motion was made to approve payment of bills with checks numbered 93084 through 93100 and 166098 through 166253 for a total of $1,443,592.00. Motion carried.

Mr. Luebker reported on the Policy Committee meeting held prior to this board meeting. Policies discussed were about Program Accountability, Educational Options, Course Options, Graduation requirements, Home-based, Tribal and Private Schooling, Food Service to include smart snacks and negative balances and a Guideline update on Pediculosis was suggested to meet the current standards.

The first reading of these policies will be at the October 14th board meeting.

Mr. Brunclik reported on Annual Meeting which was held on September 14th and noted good discussions from the public and a request for reviewing the processes of the rotation of the textbooks. He also noted that Mrs. Frank and Mr. Luebker did a great job of preparing the data and presentation for the meeting.

Mr. Luebker reported on the initial Strategic Planning Committee held on September 21. It was a great kickoff with good attendance. Introductory analysis of topics and concepts were worked on. The basic outline of a future survey to the public will be put together and how the survey will be distributed will be determined by the Strategic Planning group.

There is only one team that wins their last volleyball game of the year and that is the State champion team. The St. Croix Falls Saints will not be that team this year but they did advance to the second round of WIAA tournament play before losing to Colfax. The Saints got to the second round by defeating Glenwood City in their opening match-up in three straight games by scores of 25-7, 25-12 and 25-9.

“The girls had a good time playing Glenwood City,” St. Croix coach Alyssa Notermann said. “We didn’t have the long rallies that can make the game exciting but we were able to run our fast offense.”

The Saints could not keep the momentum going from the win against Glenwood City when the 3-seed Colfax visited the second seeded Saints. Colfax turned the tables on the Saints by winning in three straight games by scores of 2518, 25-16 and 25-12.

Mr. Brunclik reported on the Municipal meeting held on September 22. A small group gathered to listen to growth changes and upcoming challenges being faced within the school and surrounding areas. They also touched on how the bridge in Stillwater will impact this entire area. A rather large business is interested in the Osceola Business Park as a possible sight which could be a positive impact for the immediate area. Job retention within Osceola was reported as good. Good information was provided to all who attended.

The board recognized Susan Richter as a 5.5 hour Certified Aide at OES. The board recognized Christopher Rehberg as a 5.5 hour Certified Aide at OMS. A Keri Uzpen/Craig Brunclik motion was made to approve the request of Marcia Dressel to resign as Drama Rama instructor. Motion carried.

A Rosanne Anderson/Pete Kammerud motion was made to approve the presented Non-reimbursable Breakfast Meal Price increase in price from $1.50 to $1.75 to meet the requirements of the state. This is for the staff and guest cost of Breakfast and is does not impact student prices. Motion approved.

Mrs. Frank presented a recap for the board on the Energy Exemption Phase II Addendum items that it will be presented for approval at the October 14th board meeting.

A Pete Kammerud/Craig Brunclik motion was made to approve the Waiver of Premium for health insurance as a benefit in relationship to long term disability benefits. This is also part of the employee handbook for administrative clarification. Motion carried.

Mr. Luebker and Mrs. Frank provided answers to the questions that the Board had on the Handbook updates being proposed for approval. A Rosanne Anderson/Keri Uzpen motion to accept the changes to the 2015-2016 Handbook as presented. Motion approved.

Mrs. Frank provided a preview of the pupil count which is going on right now. On the 3rd Friday of September, the total student count was 1723 which is down from January 2015 by about 50. Within that total, 135 students are open enrolled into Osceola from other districts and 32 students enrolled in from Franconia. The final count will be reported in October to the Board.

The next Regular School Board Meeting date was suggested to be October 14 2015 at 6:00 P.M. A Keri Uzpen/Rosanne Anderson motion was made to adjourn. Motion carried.

Durand bounces Saints from WIAA playoffs

When the St. Croix Falls Saints traveled to Durand to play a non-conference game on Sept. 18 they found out just how potent the Panthers can be. Durand came away with a 40-14 decision.

Turn the calendar ahead five weeks and Grant Belisle’s Saints found out that things weren’t much different as the same two teams squared off in the first round of WIAA playoff football action. Once again the Panthers defended their turf and came away with a convincing 40-8 win.

The loss ends the season for St. Croix with an overall record of 5-5 (4-2 in the North Lakeland conference). Durand advances to level-2 play this Friday when they challenge Stanley-Boyd.

“Obviously, we would have liked to advance further in the playoffs, but unfortunately, like

217 other playoff teams, we end our season with a loss,” Belisle said.

“Congratulations goes to Durand. They have an athletic, talented team.

However, I can’t express how proud our coaching staff is of our team. All season long, these kids played with effort, grit, and determination. They each made significant sacrifices to make this team a ‘TEAM’. These young men have grown into a close knit group of friends and are an extremely enjoyable group to be around. They have epitomized the ‘big picture’ of what I feel athletics is all about. I feel fortunate to have been a part of it.”

St. Croix ends season with several personal bests

It is the race that a coach works their athletes toward all season long. St. Croix Falls Saints cross country coach Jennifer Clemins steered her team to be at their best for the WIAA Sectional meet in Boyceville. The Saints were at their best.

“If ever there was a time to run a person best time, it was at this meet,” Clemins said.

“All but three of our varsity runners crossed the finish line with a PR (personal record) to round out their season.”

The St. Croix girls finished in fourth place as a team out of the 20 schools entered. The top two teams at the meet, Colfax and Glenwood City, qualified for the State meet as

a team. The boys placed 12th with McDonell Central and Colfax qualifying for State having finished first and second respectively.

Besides the team qualifiers, the top five runners not on a qualifying team make it to State as individuals. St. Croix’s Sophie Klein missed the cut-off by one runner.

“Sophie Klein just missed out on advancing as an individual qualifier by one place,” Clemins remarked. “It was a bittersweet moment. returning starters,” Notermann said. “Our jv (junior varsity) had their best season yet, so I expect you’ll be seeing good things from us in the future.”

When asked to evaluate their recently completed season the team came up with a statement that summarized their feelings.

“Our season was like a marathon,” they said. “Even though we came up a little short it was still one heck of a race.”

As wild as these birds were and as nice as the cover was it was all managed habitat and the pheasants were released. I was Donnie’s and Peter’s guest at Forest Ridge Hunt Club near Glenwood City. I have been a guest a few other times at hunt clubs and this was a good one to say the least. Wild birds, great cover, varied habitat was all done as if you were romping through the wilds of Kansas or the Dakotas.

Owned by Larry and Debbie McNamara, Forest Ridge offers an alternative to the hunter with a good dog and not enough time to get out to hunt public land or if they don’t own private land. “The guys who hunt here on our 400 acre property are great guys who love to get out with their dogs. They don’t have a lot of time to chase wild birds so they come here for the kind of hunt they want. Some can’t afford the time or money to hunt out of state. They would rather take a short drive here and hunt birds here that are as wild and hard to hunt like the birds they hunt out of state.”

I agreed with the McNamaras’ assessment of the property. “Plus a lot of guys bring young dogs here to train them. They can have birds set out in more open cover so the young dog will have an easier time finding and flushing the birds. Caught between trees and an onrushing dog the bird broke out of pines but drops with a nice shot. A little later working in thick grassy cover I noticed the dogs getting hot once again. inspiration to continue to work and help his team improve for the 2016 season.

“I plan on continuing to run throughout the winter and then competing in track in the spring,” Richison said. “We have an amazing team with all our varsity runners returning (next year).”

Ryan Rogers moved up to the second spot for Osceola and placed 24th overall. Rogers, like Richison, is a sophomore. Junior Evan Wright (45th) and classmate Caleb Williams (51st) were the next two Chieftains to finish.

Freshman Justin Vorndran (56th) ran in the fifth spot for Osceola to complete the scoring.

The girls were led by Cloe Lindh (21st) and Madison Roemhild (22nd) who finished in a near dead heat with both runners timed in 21:45 for the 5,000 meters. Mickey Gearin (33rd) and Lindsey Gearin (34th) finished within three seconds of each other.

Becky Ringlien (36th) was the fifth Chieftain to finish.

It was the last race for senior Mick-

ey Gearin who leaves behind nothing but good memories.

“I felt so honored to have been able to run with my teammates and coaches these past four years,” Gearin said.

“I’ll never forget what it feels like to toe the starting line with the full support of my team. My favorite memories are from practice, working hard every day and having fun doing it. I am really going to miss the team next year.”

Although the season was highly successful it is difficult to face the reality of it being completed.

“Coming to the end of a season is always bitter sweet,” Robinson said. “In one sense you look to the future and revel in the individuals returning to your team but it is also very hard to say goodbye to the seniors in your group.

“McKenzie (Gearin), Emma (Dressel), Laurel (Wright), Savannah (Rivard), Noah (Richter), and Hunter (Kautz) are great individuals who lead this team with a hard work ethic, inspiration, and a love for the sport and their teammates. They will be missed and not easily replaced.”

Travis Bauer was a thorn in Saints’ side throughout the game. He carried 15 times for 120 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

His first touchdown came midway through the second quarter on a 56 yard run pushing the Panther lead to 18-0. His second came halfway through the third quarter on a run from six yards out making the Durand advantage 26-0.

St. Croix got on the board late in the game when Alex Johnson dented the end zone from 13 yards out. Johnson followed up his scoring run by crossing the goal line on a two-point conversion.

Chris Swanson was the leading St. Croix ball carrier netting 56 yards on 15 carries. Tyler Henk chipped in 47 yards in eight attempts.

“I want to thank this years’ seniors for making the commitment and providing a memorable season for all,” Belisle said. “Five of the nine seniors, Dalton Langer, Chris Swanson, Jake Johnson, John Petherbridge and Hunter Hansen, have played football all four years of high school and we are thankful for their commitment.

“But four others, Trevon Gearhart, Wyatt Bergmann, Dalton Kloos and Austin Straka, decided to join us after some time away from the game. We’re very fortunate and grateful they decided to play again as all nine of these young men were an integral part of our season and success. I only hope they were able to take away the kind of experience we as coaches hope to provide. They will all be missed next year.”

Klein had qualified for State her previous three seasons and was all-conference and team MVP each of her four years in high school.

“Not making it to State is a disappointment but I have a lot to be thankful for, like great coaches, friends and family,” Klein said. “I am looking forward to a great hockey season and most of all track.”

Sophie Klein’s sister Anna also was on the brink of State as she finished just behind her sister.

“Anna should be very happy with how her first high school cross country season panned out,” Clemins said. “She was our solid second runner for the girls team this year.”

Madalyn Bollig was the third runner for St. Croix and finished 16th overall.

“Madalyn Bollig’s senior year of cross country ended as well,” Clemins said. “She ran her best race of the season with a 21:59. Madalyn is proud of her accomplishments, checking off all of her goals: all-conference honors and a trip to State (in 2014). She plans on continuing her cross country career at the collegiate level at St. Mary’s University in Winona.”

Brandy Eisen and Grace Klein completed the varsity scoring for SCF finishing in 48th and 50th places respectively. Madison Eighmy finished as St. Croix’s sixth runner.

“Also to be commended are Brandy Eisen, Grace Klein and Maddy Eighmy on cutting almost a full minute off their previous fastest times.” Clemins said.

The boys were led by a solid performance by Matt LaMirande who finished 29th overall.

Noah Berg (58th) was the second St. Croix runner to cross the finish line.

Keith Murphy placed 70th, Josey Wilson 71st and Sam Butler 99th to complete the scoring for the boys team.

“Our offensive line did a great job opening up holes for the run game and providing time for the passing game,” Hazzard said.

“Our skill players would not be able to accomplish anything without the linemen up front.”

Lightning struck one last time before intermission which put the game effectively out of reach for Altoona. Gildersleeve took a quick Hazzard aerial at the line of scrimmage and weaved his way 77 yards for a touchdown and a 34-0 halftime lead.

“The second I got the ball from Tucker (Hazzard) it took some quick thinking,” Gildersleeve said. “My teammates were blocking down field giving me the opportunity to make a cut to the open green for a touchdown.”

Tevin Foss capped the Chieftain scoring with a four-yard blast for a TD midway through the third quarter.

Osceola unofficially outgained Altoona with 400 total yards to the Rails’ 149. Tanner Johnson led the balanced Chieftain rushing attack with 86 yards

on 10 carries. Gildersleeve contributed 61 on 7 attempts with Ellingsworth adding 48 on five carries. Hazzard completed four of six pass attempts for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

With the win the Chieftains will host Northwestern on Oct. 30. Northwestern defeated Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau 25-12 in their first round game.

Northwestern will be a familiar foe as Osceola defeated the Tigers 48-0 the second game of the year. Once again the Chieftains will need to focus on the game and not let the past enter into their thinking.

“The score doesn’t mean anything from the preseason game,” Ellingsworth cautioned.

“They have their tough running back Nate Pearson back (from an injury). I think that it will be a good fight against the Tigers.

We just have to show up and execute.”

Hazzard agreed that Northwestern will be a challenge.

“We can’t overlook any team we face,” he said. “We have to prepare like we are playing the best every week.”

He will be missed next year but he should be proud of the example he has given for future captains on the team.”

Lauridsen knew that he had to help the younger players along this year.

“Being the only senior on the team this year I had to really step up and try and be as best of a leader for the team as I could be,”

Lauridsen said. “We had a rough season but we played every game with heart and really came together as a team.”

Assuming that the young Chieftains work hard before the next season you can expect an improved squad from the start of the year.

“Now that we have the foundations on how to defend, we should be able to focus on offense,” Anderson said. “I hope to concede less and score more goals as well has improve our win-loss ratio.”

“She will definitely be missed,” Johnson said. “She is the type of player any coach would love to have. She comes to each practice ready to work hard and never complains.

She is a big asset in the front row. Her blocks will be missed as well as her consistency hitting and making balls stay in play.”

Carlson not only was a key contributor on the court but helped to mold the team with her interaction off the court.

“The loss (at Prescott) was definitely hard but looking back, I have had such an amazing

high school volleyball career and I am fortunate for that,” Carlson said. “Being the only senior was a cool experience. I was able to be a leader on the team and got extremely close with all of my teammates.”

With so many pieces of the 2015 team in place for next year, Johnson couldn’t help but think about next year.

“Overall I’m excited to have so many players returning and can only hope we improve more and get ready to compete again next season,” Johnson said.

“If you add up food, lodging, gas and other expenses you would have on a out-of-state hunt the bird fee here at Forest Ridge is probably cheaper and less time consuming than the Dakotas,” added McNamara.

I know my dogs couldn’t tell the difference between wild birds and game farm birds at Forest Ridge. After they were cooked and on the plate I couldn’t tell the difference either.

Candy bars with nuts come full circle on Halloween

H

alloween is definitely a kid’s holiday. Back in the late 70s and early 80s trick-or-treating was just as fun as it is now. My mother would serve dinner at 4:30, which we ate standing up, because we were still working on our costumes. She picked our favorite meals like pizza, sloppy joes or my favorite, pigs in a blanket. That way she knew we would want to eat and not end up with a stomachache from eating too much candy on an empty stomach.

We would grab our pillowcases and run from house to house amassing a year-long supply of candy. We would Wild Chow dump our heavy pillowcases on the living room floor and sort, trade, and Lisa Erickson share our candy. Our parents would ask for candy bars with nuts and coconut (Snickers and Almond Joy). My favorites were Reese’s Peanutbutter cups, Sweet-Tarts, and Bottle Caps. My sister’s were Whatchamacallits and Big Daddy bubble gum. The next day, we would bring the candy we didn’t like to school and trade it for candy we did like, and an extra lunch ticket or two.

My own kids pretty much did the same thing, except sell their candy for lunch tickets. They would use their pillowcase, come home and dump their candy on the floor and I got the candy bars with nuts.

In addition to the candy, my husband and I enjoyed walking the neighborhoods, watching the kids run around, seeing their costumes and admiring the decorations, while sipping hot cocoa from a Thermos. It was a happy time.

This year I won’t be able to watch my kids create silly or scary costumes or fix a special meal they can eat standing up while getting ready. The worst part: I won’t be getting candy bars with nuts that my kids don’t like. They have out grown Halloween. It will be a weird night. I’m sure our two high school boys will find something to do and my husband and I will be free on Halloween for the first time in 24 years.

To make the transition easy we will still cook pigs in blankets. I think this year I will have to buy my own bag of candy bars with nuts and hand them out to the kids who ring our doorbell. That way, if there are any leftovers, I can indulge.

Come to think of it, all my kids now love candy bars with nuts. I better buy a couple bags. Happy Halloween!

Thaw rolls the morning you plan to use by placing them in the refrigerator (8 hours). Use two thawed dinner rolls per hot dog. With your hands press each one flat, side by side and place a hotdog across them both. Roll the dinner rolls around the hotdog and pinch the seams together. Leaving the ends of the hotdogs peeking out. Place seam side down on greased baking sheet. Repeat with all hot dogs for a total of 8.

The optimal temperature for the rolls to rise is 8090 degrees F. I turn my oven on for 3-5 minutes and then turn it off and let the hotdog-wrapped rolls rise for 20-30 minutes until puffy, about double in size, in the warm oven. Remove from oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake hotdog rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Serve with ketchup and mustard.

legations outside of the John Doe process, they say.

“You don’t have a cop bringing in the case on a platter to you,” said Ray Dall’Osto, a Milwaukee defense attorney who described himself as leaning Democratic.

“There’s going to be a tendency that these DAs are focused on immediate issues, like crimes of violence. The DAs are going to have to be more creative.”

Wisconsin is the only state with John Doe proceedings. They’re similar to grand jury proceedings.

Prosecutors can present evidence in secret and compel witnesses to testify in secret before a judge.

Unlike a grand jury proceeding, where a prosecutor controls what he wants the jury to hear before the panel decides whether enough evidence exists to indict, John Does are more like depositions, with the judge ultimately deciding whether a crime has been committed.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, a Democrat, has used the John Doe process at least twice against Republican Gov. Scott Walker. One probe focused on whether his aides engaged in illegal campaigning when he was Milwaukee County executive. The other looked into whether Walker’s 2012 guberna-

torial recall campaign illegally coordinated with outside conservative groups.

The first probe netted six convictions. The conservative-leaning state Supreme Court halted the other investigation this summer. The court found candidates can coordinate with outside groups on issue advocacy, political jargon for ads that laud or criticize a candidate’s position on an issue but don’t expressly ask voters to elect or defeat him, saying those communications amount to free speech.

The coordination probe left Republican lawmakers furious.

They branded the investigation a political witch hunt and introduced a bill that bars prosecutors from using John Does to look into political misconduct, saying they want to protect people from long-running, politically motivated investigations. Prosecutors could still use John Does to investigate a broad swath of major crimes, such as high-level drug dealing, homicides and racketeering, but political misconduct would be off-limits.

Walker signed the bill into law Friday.

Democrats contend the move will strip prosecutors of a crucial tool they need to combat corruption and render politicians practically untouchable.

of other methods to go after misconduct. They can pursue a case in the traditional way, with detectives coaxing witnesses to cooperate voluntarily, cross-checking their stories, gathering documents, executing search warrants and issuing subpoenas. They also could turn to grand juries.

But those tactics have drawbacks.

Most prosecutors are overwhelmed with street crime and don’t have the expertise to tackle complicated, wide-ranging political misconduct cases outside of a John Doe fact-finding probe, Dall’Osto, the defense attorney, said.

Without the John Doe’s secrecy, detectives’ work can become public much more easily. Prosecutors can ask a judge to seal a case record, but even approaching someone for an interview could prompt a witness to warn others to keep quiet or destroy evidence, said La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke.

“If you’re investigating the local town board for using public equipment to pave their driveway or something, you want to talk to the local contractors. They’ll tell everyone else the investigator was here and everyone will stop talking,” said Gruenke, a Democrat who has never been involved in a John Doe. The grand jury process offers district attorneys secrecy and the ability to compel testimony, but that process is almost never used in Wisconsin, where district attorneys can charge people on their own.

State grand juries will be cumbersome — they require 17 people — and bringing one into court day after day requires space and is expensive, said University of Wisconsin-Madison law professor David Schultz.

Still, other states have been able to pursue political corruption cases without the John Doe process. Wisconsin prosecutors still have considerable powers and there are more statutes on the books that can be broken now than ever before, said Donald Downs, a UW-Madison political science professor and an expert on criminal law and politics.

As for the idea that a more public investigation could lead witnesses to coordinate their stories, Downs noted that witnesses who collude can always be charged with obstruction.

“I don’t mind making that process a little more subject to public scrutiny than it was,” Downs said.

“It’s not going to be like, `oh, my God, it’s so much easier to commit political misconduct.”

“I started with that, then I moved to metal,” he said. “I’m a three-dimensional guy – the metal challenges that.”

But the work is also inspired by his boyhood love of puppets and marionettes.

“Then I went to Disneyland and saw animatronics. It blew my mind.”

Skills acquired as an adult have enabled DeMattia to build a ninefoot tall talking Christmas tree, displayed at a mall, and a moving eyeball on a stalk, Dr. Oculus.

Leaving California to skip around the country, DeMattia studied theater in Wichita and engineering in Texas before moving to Minnesota in 1996 for his then-employer, EcoLab. “By 2003 I’d had enough of the corporate life and decided to launch out on my own,” he said, “doing what I love: art, robotics, that kind of thing.”

He’d been living in Lindstrom when he met his now-wife, Jane Meinz, and moved to St. Croix Falls in 2010.

The work at the Watershed is for sale, marking the first time the café has worked with a professional artist to provide an exhibition venue.

For the rest of October, DeMattia will show his spookier work. In November, he’ll rotate other pieces in, likely some retro robots cut from steel.

“They all start with an illustration,” he said, “I draw them up in Illustrator, then cut them with a CNC (computer numerical control) plasma cutter.”

He draws and cuts individual pieces, then welds them together in different poses. DeMattia, who does a lot of what he calls ‘garden art’ said he’s trying to bring more variety to that genre, but is also moving more toward exhibitions.

“I do sell a lot of dragonflies (for gardens), but at shows there’s a place for my more distinct pieces.”

He does 20 to 30 art exhibitions a year, and has two shows coming up in Madison in November.

But he leaves room for inspiration, and says he’s moving back toward clay.

“Now I’ve wired up the kiln again,” he said.

“I miss the sculptural form.”

DeMattia plans to have a rotating display of work at the Watershed Café through December.

“If I come up with something really good, I’ll come right down here and add it to the show.”

If all goes well, the café will host regular shows with work by local artists.

“We want to promote the art community,” said Allana Anderson, a front end manager at the café who will be coordinating the art shows. “It’s our first hurrah, and we’re seeing if we can make it a go as a regular showing.”

There will be an opening for the show Oct. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.
