ArtBarn celebrates Schillberg bequest

A new kiosk outside the St. Croix ArtBarn is one of the first signs of a recent $20,000 donation to the arts center from Marie Schillberg and her late husband, John Schillberg.

ArtBarn board members celebrated the gift last week with Mrs. Schillberg and Sharon Dole, the daughter of Mr. Schillberg’s first wife, Martha.

Dole recounted the story of how the ArtBarn was born, illuminating the legacy of the Schillberg family and the former dairy barn.

“I was at the very beginning,” Dole recalled.

Polk County renews sponsorship of Stower trail

The Polk County Board last Tuesday affirmed the county as sponsor and managing coordinator of the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail.

By process of elimination, the affirmation seems to indicate that the majority of board members are not interested in Amery’s offer to act as the trail’s sponsor.

Bainbridge left abruptly, without notice, according to documents

Not much more is known about why Polk County’s elected Clerk of Courts, Jobie Bainbridge, gave an immediate and abrupt resignation on September 11.

The Free Press learned of Bainbridge’s resignation on October 2, weeks after a replacement had already been appointed.

After filing an open records request, a copy of Bainbridge’s resignation letter was obtained on October 16. By statute, Bainbridge was given an opportunity to supplement the document with a statement, but she declined to do so.

The letter, addressed to Judges Jeffery Anderson and Daniel Tolan, along with Chief Judge Scott Needham, DCA Don Harper, County Administrator Dana Frey,

and Deputy County Administrator Andrea Jerrick, reads: “After much consideration, please accept this letter as my resignation for the position of Polk County Clerk of Circuit Court as of Monday, September 11, 2017.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me to make as I do love my position but just cannot stay in this position any longer due to several reasons. It has been a pleasure working for all of you and working for Polk County.”

More than 60 Polk County employees didn’t officially learn of Bainbridge’s departure until September 27, when an internal email was sent from Andrea Jerrick. It reads: “Hi everyone, Wanted to let you know that Jobie Bain-

Site prep starts on county highway garage

The Polk County Board adopted an $11,867,432 project budget for the new Highway Department garage on October 17 and authorized spending for the project, prompting the start of new construction.

The county will pay for the project with a mix of its own funds and a loan from Bremer Bank, which offered a competitive interest rate and the option to pay off early.

According to financial advisor Michele Wiberg, paying off early at any rate above 4 percent will result in a savings compared to what the county would have paid in interest if it financed the project with bonds.

The board also awarded a set of bids totaling $2.9 million to start site preparations and acquisition of materials for the new highway garage.

A bill that would have allowed former recreational campgrounds along the Lower St. Croix River to operate as event venues appears to have stalled in the Wisconsin State Legislature.

The bill — Assembly Bill 399 and Senate Bill 309 — stirred controversy upon its introduction to the legislature in June.

As proponents argued that easing strict rules on riverfront properties would promote economic development, critics countered that it would erode protections along the St. Croix River, a national park and federally designated Wild and Scenic River.

Debate over the legislation focused on a Somerset property where landowners had proposed turning a former Chris-

tian campground into a for-profit wedding venue, The Lodge on Croix.

However, a state-level scenic overlay district limits permitted uses on the property’s river frontage, as does a federal scenic easement purchased by the National Park Service. The bill would have eased the state-level restrictions.

The state Assembly held a public hearing for the bill in July and a com-

mittee recommended its passage in August.

Following the bill’s public hearing in the Senate in August, SB 309 lacked enough votes for a committee recommendation, according to Senator Sheila Harsdorf, the bill’s sponsor in the Senate.

“I don’t expect the Senate bill to move,” she told the Sun.

Polk County Board begins budget review

The Polk County Board received a draft 2018 budget proposal last week, signaling the start of the board’s review of next year’s budget.

The proposed budget shows a 5.7 percent increase in both revenue and spending. Although the county tax levy is set to increase by about $243,000, or 1.12 percent, the tax

rate will drop from a shade over 5 percent to just under — 5.13 percent to 4.99.

At the October 17 board meeting, a proposal to reduce funding for the county museum was defeated and board members approved a onetime $15,000 increase to the fair budget for building repairs. Other changes from last year include $10,000 to the highway fund for ATV signage, $8,500 for long-range rifles for law enforcement, $5,000

Randy is a four month old version of the super friendly Orange Tabby you always hear about. We repeatedly hear from people who swear that Orange Tabbies are the friendliest, most easy going cats ever. Randy is true to the hype. He loves to cuddle and sends out a resounding Thank You by way of purring motor.

When not cuddling, Randy likes a bit of climbing, chasing and catnip shenanigans. He is still very much a kitten.

Four of each, dogs and cats, found homes last week. Siamese Tabby kittens Teddy and Mittens, Mitted Blue Grey Chubbs and Tabby Point Sandra all found forever homes. Puppies Vinnie and Gina, Shih Tzu Mix Louie and Poodle Terrier Mix Ollie, also went home.

Four more puppies remain available for adoption. Donnie, Aiden, Dominick and Tony are four brothers, just nine weeks old. Dominick is black with a white chest. He has the stocky build of a Bulldog Mix. His brothers have the markings of a German Shepherd Mix, black and tan with bits of white here and there. This band of brothers are ready to learn puppy manners in their new home.

Our adult dogs are housetrained and anxious to meet you too. Roger is a Shepherd-Heeler mix. He has a black and tan Shepherd coat on a Heeler body. Jake is an Australian Shepherd-Border Collie mix who loves to play fetch. He is a big fella. Jake is a good old boy with some manners already in his resume.

Summer is a dappled Heeler-Pit Bull Terrier Mix. She is super smart

and loves to work for treats to learn new things. Summer is on the large size with a handsome build. She is loving and friendly. Lauren is a smaller Terrier Mix, perhaps Jack Russell Terrier. She has a short white coat with a dark liver spot over one eye and a circle patch around the other. This young girl of six months is learning every day and will blossom in a home that will introduce her to new things.

We have two Poodle Mixes. Marty is a White Poodle Mix. He has long legs and a long tail. Marty would make a great walking partner. Guy is a Senior Lhasa-Poodle Mix. He is 12 years old with pep in his step and a big heart. Guy’s came to the shelter because his owner moved to a nursing home. Guy will be an excellent companion for another Senior.

Adoptable Cats and Kittens are available in all sizes and colors. Sterling is a lanky, Blue Grey adult female. She is young and will fill out with love and attention to become a Stunner. Henry is a soft and quiet kitty, eight months old. He has big bones and promises to become a rather large cat. Black Cats, Kate and Beck, remain at the shelter, for now. Kate is 10 years old and Beck is four months, brother to Randy. Kittens are: Black and White Sneaker, Siamese Tabby Bear, Mitted Grey Tabby Tink and swirling Tabby Enzo.

Many thanks to Cascade Bar and Grill for hosting our Arnell Meat Raffle over the weekend. The afternoon get-together was a huge success.

I’m a lutefisk survivor

F

ull disclosure: I am a very picky eater.

Pickles? Won’t eat ‘em, don’t have their juices spilling on my other food. Olives? Green or black – they’re disgusting. Cabbage? No thanks.

Fish? I suffered through Lent for decades and would rather not have anything to do with anything that comes from the water.

So when my Norwegian boss asked me to attend a lutefisk dinner, you can imagine my reaction.

“I’d be happy to,” I said, after I was reassured by his wife that they served meatballs and mashed potatoes as well.

The Friday before the Sunday dinner, the boss called to make sure I could and would still go to the dinner. “Yes, we’re still on,” I replied.

In the five years since moving from Iowa, I have heard a lot of lutefisk stories. The Norwegian people have met have had a sense of galPublisher Ilows humor about the fish dish that is both funny and disturbing.

Tom Stangl The big day came and my boss was pleasantly surprised to see me when he picked my wife and I up for the dinner.

“You’re sure you are feeling up to this?” he asked, noting that he has made several dates to go eat lutefisk with people only to have them “fall ill” the day of the dinner.

I figured we were all in, and went to the church, where we met a lot of very nice people.

The meal was served family style, and our little group sat with three other people who were soon friends. When it was learned that this was my first time with lutefisk, the good natured ribbing began.

“You can tell your relatives that they can skip the embalming when you die,” one of them said.

The nice ladies began placing the dishes on our table, which we passed, counter clockwise. If it was truly family style, we would be passing both ways at the same time.

Homemade mashed potatoes? Yes, please. Green beans? Yes, thank you. Meatballs in gravy? Lovely, I’ll take a couple servings. Lefse? Sure. Butter and brown sugar on it? I can do that.

What came next had me doing a figurative and literal gut check.

Lutefisk in all of its translucent and gelatinous glory. The fish kept moving after the plate was place in front of me. Time to man up.

There was a small piece that had sloughed off from the remainder, about the size of a deck of cards.

Wait, don’t nutritionists tell us that the serving size should be about the size of a deck of cards? It was perfect.

I spooned the wiggly portion on to my plate and passed it along. Drawn butter for your lutefisk?

Sure. Cream sauce? Why not.

It was tender, but hard to spear, what with all the jiggling. I landed it on my fork and took a bite.

The texture was strange and I quickly decided it was best not to do too much chewing. Bite and swallow, hope for the best and please, Lord let me keep it down…

I am happy to report that I kept it down.

Soon it was all over and time for dessert.

So now I can check that off my list and share in the jokes.

I’m a lutfisk lover

O

kay, okay. Love is probably too strong a word for how I feel about lutfisk.

I certainly look forward to “lutfisk season,” the three months or so when all the Nordic-heritage churches seem to schedule a big event around the preserved fish.

But I manage to survive the remainder of the year without a bite.

I’d certainly never hold it against Editor anyone who honestly doesn’t like Suzanne Lindgren lutfisk. And I get the jokes about the lye-soaked fish being weird, jelly-like and unappetizing. It’s a pretty easy target. But cover the stuff with cream sauce and I’m all in.

Truth be told, I think my affinity for lutfisk is the product of neutral feelings about the dish itself (I’m certainly not offended by the flavor or texture) mixed with a great deal of respect for tradition and clan.

The observant reader has probably noticed that I’m using the Swedish spelling. Lutefisk with an “e” is for the Norwegians, don’t ya know.

I identify strongly with my Swedish heritage (yes, I have a little Norwegian blood too), and food is one of the few links I have to that history.

Taking a bite of lutfisk is also one of very few chances I have to experience something as my ancestors might have, generations ago.

It’s interesting to ponder, as I chew, that the preservation technique was used of necessity. To consider that lutfisk was eaten for the sake of survival, if not pleasure.

According to lore around the origins of lutfisk, a dearth of salt deposits in Scandinavia probably led people to dry the nutrient-rich whitefish to eat during long winters with little daylight. High quality versions might have been reconstituted in water and served with butter. Lower quality grades were tougher and took longer to boil.

Although the history doesn’t seem well documented, some believe the ash of beech or birch — which

would have contained lye — was added to the boiling water to break down the proteins and speed cooking.

My grandparents, second-generation Swedish Americans, never pushed lutefisk on us. In fact, I don’t remember them eating it at all.

That would seem to put them in line with modern Scandinavians, who rarely eat the traditional food.

Per a Smithsonian piece, “Scandinavians’ Strange Holiday Lutefisk Tradition,” far more lutfisk is eaten in the United States.

“Strangely,” writes author Erica Janik, “these children of immigrants celebrate a tradition that connects them to their ancestral home, even as many Scandinavians have moved on.”

I guess our love of lutfisk appears to some as strange as the dish itself.

Consider it food for thought the next time you dig in. Enjoy!

Annual events lures stars to the valley In 1937, Albert E. Brumley wrote a catchy gospel tune titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Turn Your Radio On,â&#x20AC;? which was eventually recorded by dozens of artists and groups including Skeeter Davis in the 1960s and Ray Stevens a decade later.

Like many hit songs, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Turn Your Radio Onâ&#x20AC;? reappeared from time to time, possibly because radio stations loved playing the self-celebrating tune so much.

There was a time when radio stations didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t begin each day until sunrise, and many of those stations in small towns across America began their days with that favorite gospel melody.

While it was recorded numerous times by well-known artists, no one had a bigger hit with the song than Tangi Blevins & the Heavenly Hosts. When Tangi sang the chorus, you knew she meant every word: Turn Your Radio On And listen to the music in the air.

Get in touch with God, Turn Your Radio On. While a lot of folks in the valley were fi xated on the upcoming mayoral election, there were others who had their thoughts focused on another major August

event: The Spring County Fair.

For teenagers like Mary Ann Tinkersley and myself, the fair meant getting our sheep ready for the annual FFA judging, a big milestone for small-town youth.

Most of the excitement, especially among the female population, was reserved for the lineup of pseudo-celebrities who made their way through the county fair circuit each year.

Some fair headliners were bigger than others. No one will ever forget Tim Jones, the Tom Jones impersonator, who caused more than one fainting spell as he sang â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Ladyâ&#x20AC;? in 1977.

If I tried to name the biggest star to grace the stage at the Spring County Fairground before 1998, it most likely would have been a toss-up between 1985â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Boxcar Willie, who catapulted to fame as an overalls-wearing hobo selling records during afternoon Brady Bunch reruns, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mr. Sound Effectsâ&#x20AC;? Wes Harrison in 1983.

But on Tuesday, July 21, 1998, the primary focus of attention shifted from weekend news of the spiritual rededication of Elbert Lee Jones and Marvin Walsh during the Sunday contemporary service at the Lutheran Church to the posters being hung in store windows along the town square.

Who would believe it? In just four weeks, Tangi Blevins, along with all four Heavenly Hosts, would be appearing live on stage at the county fair. This could just be the biggest star to appear at the county fair since Boxcar

Willie. This surely made the 11mile journey to the county fairgrounds worth the effort.

Raymond Cooper, thankful for anything that would temporarily divert the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention away from the recent egg-price scandal, found an old 45 in the record vault left from the previous station owner. Earl Goodman, delivering mail to homes on 3rd street, noticed the tune playing as he walked past each screen door on this warm summer day: Turn Your Radio On And listen to the music in the air.

He thought it was odd, since Raymond Cooper generally gave his daily Federal Reserve Report at 2:45. Whatever the reason, Earl couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the song out of his head the rest of the day.

And to think â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all this happened as Iris Long pasted the headline as she made the fi nal touches to the next morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edition of The Lennox Valley Hometown News.

Just like most big events in the summer of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;98, chatter about Tangi Blevins would wind down in favor of something much bigger.

TO THE EDITOR The Open Cupboard Update The last few months at The Open Cupboard have been busy as always. We distributed school supplies to 62 children including scientific calculators. Thanks to Hiawatha Bank for purchasing 50 back packs and collecting over $600 in donations from their customers to purchase other needed supplies. Also contributing to the school drive collection was Osceola United Methodist Church and local citizens.

The food shelf is fortunate to have healthy, fresh veggies from Dan and Margaret (Common Harvest Farm) each week from June-October.

They bring us boxes of potatoes, onions, squash, peppers, eggplant, and so much more. It is such a wonderful addition to the other food our clients receive.

We are often asked what we need for the food shelf. The first answer is usually paper towels and toilet paper. Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ace Hardware is always ready to donate two or three cases each month to help keep us stocked.

But these items and those on the food shelf sign by St. Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church are always appreciated.

more at home. But thanks to the Postal Carrier food drive in May and the Trollhaugen food swap in October, our shelves get replenished.

Our back pack program continues to grow with 44 families as of this date.

The number of churches involved in providing some of the food items is a big help. Besides what the churches donate, the food shelf purchases much of what is given from Second Harvest Heartland and Aldi. Families also receive a milk coupon each week and once a month a $10 veggie coupon and a coupon for one pound of ground beef.

ave you ever seen the TV show on ABC, “What Would You Do?” with host John Quinones? The premise is similar to the old Candid Camera whereby actors portray people involved in some sort of social conflict. Unsuspecting bystanders are filmed along with the actors who escalate conflict Columnist to provoke a reaction. The goal is to Bernie Desmarais observe what level of conflict is required before one of the non-actors is compelled to intervene. Then, the host steps in to ask this random person why he or she did what they did. Or, why they did nothing at all. Some days I feel like John Quinones and other days I find myself looking for a hidden camera.

I’ve been writing this column for The Sun for over a year now. My intention was to share a perspective with my new community – as a resident, a historic building owner, and most directly as a businessperson with nearly 35 years experience working for and with many blue-chip companies. My column,

as well as my personal style, is to spark dialogue because I am an extrovert – someone energized by interacting with others.

Both my column and my communication style have generated some controversy (OK, conflict) in my four years as an Osceola resident.

In fact, some people have actually come by my studio to call me “arrogant,” a “know-it-all,” and worst of all: a “newcomer” who does not understand how Osceola works.

Ouch!

Municipalities, like corporations, non-profit and or fraternal organizations “work” by following the same basic principles. They: Establish a clear and shared vision or purpose for doing what they do.

Organize tightly or loosely, but with clear roles and responsibilities.

Operate with full transparency as they are all in it together.

Hold leaders as well as members accountable for doing what they say they are going to do.

Of course, the foundation of these four principles is ongoing, direct and respectful communication – especially as it relates to the different perspectives we encounter. We are social creatures with a variety of opinions and personalities who do not think or act alike. Our collec-

tive challenge and key to success is to effectively deal with and resolve . . . CONFLICT. Otherwise, it is logical to conclude we are not as successful as we see ourselves to be.

If you’ve been reading The Sun, you know I formed a new company, LAD Properties, LLC. Our investors wish to redevelop the old hospital site. We view this property currently as a public blight (economic cancer?) for the Village of Osceola.

Our vision / purpose is simple: We want to provide housing for active adults (mostly baby-boomers) who wish to move off the farm or out of the Twin Cities to enjoy what our historic village has to offer. More village residents means more customers for downtown businesses, more patients for OMC, and more much needed tax revenue to support public schools and benefit the community. That’s it!

THE CAPITOL REPORT Law enforcement backs standards for handling body camera videos

Law enforcement officers have lined up in support of a bill laying out standards for handling video from body cameras, saying it would protect privacy while encouraging more departments to use the technology.

But media and free speech advocates worried the bill’s language is too restrictive and called on lawmakers to retool it to make footage more readily available.

Under Rep. Jesse Kremer’s bill, law enforcement would only be able to release body camera footage in case of a death, alleged physical injury, custodial arrest or a search during a temporary questioning.

Additionally, victims and witnesses would also need to sign off on the release of the footage if it occurs in a location “with an expectation of privacy,” including homes and apartments, prior to it being handed over to those who request it.

form the “thin ice” new technological developments have “placed us on” in terms of Fourth Amendment protections.

“The release of virtually every video requested by the media or the public can create a chilling effect for tipsters, victims and the public if there is concern that their face or the inside of their home may be displayed on the evening news,” he said.

Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney said the bill would help law enforcement agencies that currently don’t have any written policies on body cameras, which leaves “many gray areas around how footage that can be highly personal for victims can be treated.”

And Mahoney noted while his county board has signed off on buying body cameras for all his deputies, he said he wouldn’t approve implementation of the technology until protections like those outlined in the bill were in place.

Blue Mound Police Chief Andrew Rose agreed. At his smaller agency, he noted there was some hesitation surrounding the cost of the body cameras and storing the footage.

“Everyone wants body cameras, but the biggest thing is the record retention time, how much storage, the cost,” he said. “This bill helps us define what we need to do and helps us in budgeting and planning.”

While media and free speech representatives said they supported consistent statewide policies on body cameras, they stressed the need for less burdensome procedures surrounding the release of footage.

Freedom of Information Council President Bill Lueders said the wording could jeopardize the public’s right to know about the “actions of police in certain critical situations.”

And he questioned the wisdom of getting permission from all witnesses and victims in the case of a police encounter at something like a college fraternity party, where there could be dozens of people captured in the footage.

Kyle Geissler, Wisconsin Broadcasters Association director of operations and public affairs, agreed, calling that process “cumbersome and inefficient.”

Lueders also argued that it should be possible for someone requesting body camera footage to “make the argument that the video should be released even if you can’t track down every single person.”

Rep. André Jacque, R-De Pere, said he could agree with the idea to “perhaps give additional discretion to law enforcement in terms of what can be released.”

Craig and Pam Brunclik of Osceola are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter Brianna Brunclik to Joel Neidermire, son of David and Gwen Neidermire of East Farmington.

Brianna will graduate in May 2018 with a Physical Therapist Assistant degree. Joel is a 2016 graduate of the Agriculture Power and Equipment Technician program at WITC and currently farms full time.

A Sept. 29, 2018 wedding is planned. The couple plans to reside on and op-

fore freeways, developments and cultivation took over.

Her study captures the importance of uncovering the natural treasures in all communities while they still exist.

Betty Lou Anderson died Oct. 16, 2017. She was born April 24, 1929.

She was preceded in death by her son, Dennis.

She is survived by husband Duane, sons Rick and Randy, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She will be dearly missed and loved.

Dean Gary Buehler died peacefully in his sleep Oct. 16, 2017, at his home in Osceola.

Dean was born Sept. 9, 1964, to loving parents K Karen (Gnan) Inselm mann and the late Gary B Buehler. Dean was bapttized and confirmed at Z Zion Lutheran Church iin Buffalo Lake, Minn.

D Dean spent his childh hood and attended sschool in Buffalo Lake ((Class of ’83) and was rraised in the same h home that his mother g grew up in.

Dean had a beautiful ssinging voice and a deep love of music, especially the music of Wynonna Judd. On multiple occasions, Dean was invited on stage during a Wynonna concert to dance and joke around with the country music star!

Dean was an automobile enthusiast, and was known for helping his friends with their mechanical problems. He also loved to mow lawns and plow driveways for free for those in his neighborhood who needed the help. Everyone who knew Dean saw his goofy, contagious smile and felt his warmth and kindness.

Dean is survived by his mother Karen Inselmann, daughters Jessica Buehler and Alexis Buehler, Granddaughter Carmen Thygeson, his sisters Kelly (Ray) Harrell, Kris (Dan) Shilson, and Greta Buehler, his brothers Greg (Cristin) Buehler and Rob (Jessica) Buehler, Nephews Harper Groves, Luke Shilson, Mike (Brittany) Harrell, Austin Harrell, Colby (Courtney) Nelson, Cameron Nelson, Brennan Nelson, Trevor Evenson-Buehler, Noah Buehler, Bennett Buehler, and Maddox Buehler, Nieces Alyssa Shilson, Stephanie (Russell) Bailey, Trinity Buehler, Angel Veld, and Great-Nieces Cahleah Harrell, Annora Nelson, Brielle Veld, and Bentlie Veld.

Legion helps hurricane victims

American Legion Post 143, St. Croix Falls, recently donated to the Salvation Army in Houston, $200; to the Red Cross in Flroida, $200; to the Red Cross in Puerto Rico, $200, all toward hurricane relief.

The legion and auxiliary also doanted $300 to the Homeless Veterans Shelter in Chippewa Falls.

The Legion encourages all to give aid to their fellow citizens.

Charges of burglary, criminal damage to property, failure to stop at signs and possession of methamphetamine were dropped for a 33-year-old Somerset man last week after a Polk County judge accepted his plea deal.

Randall Arndt pled guilty to felony theft of moveable property and bail jumping, or violating the terms of his bond, in exchange for dismissed charges and dismissed repeat-offender enhancements.

The collection of charges were prompted by a July 6 incident in which Arndt stole a truck from a gas station and led authorities on a high-speed chase, driving through crop fields and wooded areas, according to the criminal complaint. He was eventually caught on foot and allegedly possessed meth-

amphetamine, a violation of the terms of a prior bond agreement.

In taking the plea deal, Arndt gives up his right to a trial. Although the dismissed charges will not be added to his record, Judge Jeffery Anderson will consider them when he sentences Arndt on Nov. 1. Anderson may sentence Arndt to as many as four and a half years in prison and another five years extended supervision, and fine him as much as $20,000.

After failing to negotiate any type of plea deal as of last Monday, October 16, jury selections will begin in the case of 67-year-old Virgil Hansen of Milltown.

The recently re-elected Milltown Village Clerk, firefighter, and former Unity School Bus driver was first charged with seven felonies relating to the alleged sexual abuse and torture of a 13-yearold boy in November of 2015, including repeated sexual assault of a child, child sexual exploitation, enticement, trafficking, solicitation, and abuse.

Hansen is alleged to have committed the illegal acts at his Milltown residence.

Judge Anderson said twice that he hoped to sentence Arndt in a way that prevents future crime. The convict has a long history of criminal charges, with nearly 50 cases filed in Polk and St. Croix counties since 2002. He was first charged with possession of methamphetamine in 2002, although the charge was eventually dismissed.

Sentencing for the theft and bail jumping is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 1.

Assistant District Attorney James Renneke took over the lead prosecution role roughly a month ago. Newly hired Renneke is a former Rusk County District Attorney who has taken the place of former Assistant District Attorney Dan Tolan.

Kemp is confident in Rennekeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience level, and says that along with federal and Supreme-Court work, he brings more than 30 years of prosecution and defense experience to their team.

Renneke submitted several pieces of evidence to the crime lab when he came on board last month, leaving very little time for the defense to review those results, or how that might impact plea negotiations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In light of what that might show, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m kind of up in the air,â&#x20AC;? said Hansenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attorney, Bruce Anderson.

Both sides will now begin the difficult task of screening jurors in the case. Sequestration will be required of those who serve.

The prosecution has identified 19 witnesses.

Barring any last-minute plea negotiations, a fourday jury trial is scheduled to begin November 6.

An Osceola man is free on bond this week after making an initial app pearance on c charges that h he stole more tthan $5,000 w while workiing as an emp ployee at the C Cascade BP Petersen III gas station in Osceola.

Lowell J. Petersen III is alleged to have taken the cash during scheduled shifts in August and September. According to a criminal complaint, deposit discrepancies of several hundred dollars each were reported on eighteen different dates, including a day when money was actually added.

The complaint states that Petersen could be seen on camera separating cash and setting it behind him on several of those dates.

Because the amount of cash alleged missing is more than $5,000, Petersen is charged with class H felony theft from a business setting.

Petersen denied any involvement in the missing cash. He was subsequently arrested and made an initial court appearance on Oct. 13.

Petersen was released on a $5,000 signature bond. He can no longer have contact with the BP station. An initial appearance in scheduled for Oct. 30.

Knife drawn at bar time, one arrested

Clear Lake authorities were called just before 2 a.m. on October 14 for a m man who had a allegedly cut sseveral pattrons with a k knife at Midw way Bar. P o l i c e ffound the Clemmens alleged susCl pect, Cody N. Clemmens, 39 of Clear Lake, sitting in the back of his vehicle near the bar.

Clemmens denied cutting anyone, and surrendered a pocketknife to police.

A victim who had been cut reported that an argument had broken out outside the bar when Clemmens pulled a knife and began threatening people. The victim tried to grab the knife but was cut on his thumb. The group reportedly then fled into the bar and locked Clemmens outside.

Because of his size,

a larger squad car was requested to transport Clemmens to the Polk County Jail.

He was charged with substantial battery and injury by negligent use of a weapon, both class I felonies. He was released on a $2,500 signature bond with conditions not to consume alcohol and avoid contact with the Midway Bar or the victims in the incident.

Clemmens has a prior conviction for Operating While Intoxicated (second offense) from May of this year, in which he lost his driver’s license for 12 months and was ordered to install an Ignition Interlock Device.

About the crime stories The crime stories on this page are based on the probable cause reports from different law enforcement agencies.

Probable cause reports (PCs) are simply a report stating the “probable cause” that the arresting officer had at the time of arrest. Osceola boys cross country team wins Sectional State meet this week

All season long the Osceola Chieftain boys cross country team has been impressive. Coach Rachael Robinson’s boys squad is talented and deep and did not rest on their laurels. Osceola demonstrated how good coaching, talented athletes and just plain hard work can pay huge dividends. The Chieftains went to Hayward last week determined to bring back the Sectional crown. They did just that, and it wasn’t really very close. In the end Osceola placed first with 58 team points, 42 points better than runner-up St. Croix Central. Both Osceola and St. Croix Central will compete in the State meet

in Wisconsin Rapids this Saturday, Oct. 28th.

“The boys team executed perfectly on a very tough and grueling course,” Robinson said.

“They ran with grit, heart, and determination to achieve a goal we have been striving for all season. This group of boys has worked so hard and every single one of them contributes to the team’s success. Now it’s time to execute on the State course.”

Once again the formula for success at the Sectional meet for the Osceola boys squad was balance and depth. The Chieftains placed all seven of their Sectional runners in the top 33 places of the race. In total the Sectional had 99 athletes competing representing 15 schools. The top six runners in the race did not include anyone from

Once the first Chieftain runner Kolten Heimbach crossed the finish line in was a blur of green for the next 37 seconds. Heimbach finished in seventh place with a time of 19:16 on a tough 5,000-meter course. Matt Schultz was one second behind Heimbach and placed eighth.

Blake Slater finished 11th in 19:31 and Ryan Rogers 12th in 19:36. Justin Vorndran completed the Chieftain scoring by finishing 20th in 19:48. Nick Kremer also had an excellent race finishing 25th in 19:53 as did Jacob Hall who finished the race in 20:20 good for 33rd place.

Vorndran knows that the tough competition among teammates on the talented Osceola squad helped to make the entire team better.

“Towards the beginning of our season we saw a lot of competition between our own runners to determine placements on the team, but as we’ve gotten later in the season we’ve started to understand how working together is what really leads to victory,” Vorndran said. “It was a tough course in Hayward, and the competition was fierce, but in the end it was our dynamic as a team that earned us the (first place) plaque. It truly is an honor to be a part of this team.”

Although winning the Sectional meet is a great accomplishment the Osceola season is not yet done. This Saturday the Chieftains will compete against the best teams in the state to see how they match up. The meet will be held in Wisconsin Rapids.

Chieftain football team advances to level two in WIAA playoffs

Some people may tell you that there are too many teams that qualify for the WIAA football playoffs. One of the arguments is that there are too many mismatches between the teams that earn the one-seed and the eight-seed teams that they face. The mismatch theory got a huge hole blown in it last Friday during the first week of playoffs. One of the 1-seeds, Wrightstown, escaped with a 21-20 win. Another, Lodi, came away with a seven point win and that was just in D-4 play.

The Osceola Chieftains opened their season 9-0 and earned the top seed in their area and faced the 8-seeded Nekoosa Papermakers. Osceola was ready for Nekoosa and took control of the game early, scoring the first 35 points of the game. To the Papermakers credit they demonstrated that they too have a quality team and outscored the Chieftains 20-14 after intermission to make the final score 49-20.

“I thought the boys came out and took care of business,” Osceola coach Scott Newton said.

“Nekoosa had some nice skilled athletes on the edge.”

a short punt Osceola set up shop 44 yards from the Papermakers’ end zone. Osceola navigated those 44 yards on seven running plays with Jack Feldt denting the end zone on an 18 yard run.

It was more of the same the next possession for the Chieftains. This time they marched 54 yards over the artificial turf, again in seven rushes.

Brett Carlson went the last yard for the score to make it 13-0.

On Osceola’s third possession they mixed in a few passes to keep Nekoosa off balance but the end result was the same. The Chieftains went 66 yards in nine plays with Feldt finishing the drive from six yards out to make it 20-0.

Osceola upped their lead to 27-0 on a 1-yard Koehler run and then with four seconds left on the first half clock Brett Carlson hit Haakon Carlson with a 4-yard touchdown pass to open up a 35-0 lead. Nekoosa struck back before halftime with their first of three touchdown passes. All three Nekoosa touchdowns came on long passes from quarterback Kyle Olson.

It is too bad that the 2017 cross country season isn’t just a little bit longer for the Osceola Chieftains girls squad. Week by week Osceola showed improvement as their young squad continued to

gain valuable experience.

The Chieftains places third in the tough Middle Border conference race two weeks ago and last week stepped it up another notch. Osceola placed third in the Hayward Sectional and nearly qualified for a State berth as a team.

Osceola opens tournament play with win, loses in round two

The word “best” might be the most important word to summarize the Osceola Chieftain volleyball team in WIAA Regional play. Osceola opened the tournament as the 5-seed and traveled to play the 4-seed, the Somerset Spartans. Osceola had lost to Somerset when the two teams met in Middle Border conference play but this time it was different.

Playing perhaps the best that they played all season long Osceola defeated the Spartans three games to one. Their reward for beating Somerset was to play perhaps the best team in the region, the St. Croix Central Panthers. Although the Chieftains lost they played pretty well in losing to the powerful Panther squad by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 28-26.

Osceola fell behind Somerset 5-2 in the first game but quickly came back and tied the score at nine. The score was also tied at 10 and 17 before the Chieftains took control outscoring the Spartans 8-4 to win the first game.

Somerset broke out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed in game two and won the most lopsided game of the night 25-14. Osceola struck back in the third game. After trailing by two a couple of times in the early stages of the contest the Chieftains tied the score at 11 points each. The score was tied six more times, the last time at 21, before Osceola

scored the last four points to win game-three 25-21.

Osceola took control early in the deciding game and built their lead to nine points at 21-12 before Somerset staged a late rally. The Spartans cut the Osceola lead to 2116 before the Chieftains scored four of the last five points of the game to win 25-17.

Sam Bents led the Osceola offense with 11 kills with Katie Haase and Alyssa Pauley adding 10 each. Bents was a wall at the net recording a game high eight blocks.

Ashton Anderson had 27 digs for Osceola followed

by Joanna Ingram with 22 and Izzy Ulrich with 19. Courtney Miller led the team with 21 assists followed by Hailey Ebert with 15.

Two days after the big win in Somerset the Chieftains got a chance at the 1-seed, the St. Croix Central Panthers.

Although SCC swept Osceola in three games they were all close as the Chieftains played very well again. The cumulative score for the three games was 78-68. With the win the Panthers ran their unbeaten streak to 27.

Keri Kromrey led Osceola with 11 kills against the Panthers. Bents and Haase were tough at the nets with five and four blocks respectively. Miller led the team with 17 digs with Anderson contributing 14. Miller led the team with 15 assists with Ebert getting 11.

When our stay ended and Nancee and Brady Boy headed home I headed east into the heart of the UP’s grouse haven.

Running into other hunters from Pennsylvania, Grand Rapids, Minn., and several others out of state vehicles, I figured I was in the right spot. Michigan manages grouse, working with giant timber companies and private land owners to grow wildlife habitat.

Michigan DNR has what they call their GEMS program, an acronym for Grouse Enhanced Management System that is also managed for grouse and hunters with great walking trails.

We found grouse there, very near the top of their 10 year cycle. But finding them and being able to see them, let alone shoot them in that same thick colorful woods were no easy task. Grouse hunters are somewhat like musky anglers. Actually seeing a grouse is as satisfying as having a musky follow to your boat.

Walking grouse trails

uffed grouse will lead you down many trails; some will take your breath away. This time of year with fall colors aglow on sunny days, the woods are simply a joyful place to wander. Over the years I’ve found that some of those trails I walk are maintained by the Ruffed Grouse Society, timber companies, county foresters or just old logging roads long forgotten that vanish into thickets the farther back you go.

I found myself walking those trails last week in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP) with faithful dogs Teal, Wild River Windy, Chase and young Briar in the Western UP. I was told that grouse Trails numbers there were down due to heavy spring rains. Staying in Bear Jim Bennett Cabin, a VRBO we bought for a song at a trout fest silent auction was nice for my wife Nancee and 9 year old, Brady, with BB gun.

Osceola senior Kyle Braml was not celebrating the win but instead was already looking forward to the next game.

“As a team we played well, but we never settle for what we’ve done until we reach our goal,” Braml said. “We have to have a good week of practice and stay focused for Bloomer this Friday night.”

The next game for Osceola is against the Bloomer Blackhawks with kickoff at 7:00 in Osceola at Robert W. Vesperman athletic complex. Bloomer, a 4-seed, got by Middle Border conference member Ellsworth (5-seed) 14-7 in their opening game of the playoffs. Osceola defeated Ellsworth 6-0 late in the season in an MBC game played in Ellsworth “Our conference opponents are very tough, which prepares us for the playoffs,” Newton said. “We need to continue to focus on our fundamentals and work to get better every night in practice. We play Bloomer Friday night.

They are very big and run multiple offensive formations. It’s going to be a physical game.”

In the meantime Osceola cranked up a very effective ground game and sprinkled in just enough passes to keep the Nekoosa defense from keying on the infantry. Osceola ran the ball 54 times and collected 20 first downs on the ground. Leading the way was Michael Koehler who had 23 carries good for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jack Feldt added 115 yards on nine carries and also hit pay dirt twice. Quarterback Brett Carlson also had a rushing touchdown.

“We were able to run the ball and control both sides of the line of scrimmage,” Newton said.

Osceola also had a special teams touchdown that caught Nekoosa by surprise. After their second touchdown the Papermakers decided to try an on-side kick. After the ball was kicked, the Nekoosa players were waiting for it to go the required 10 yards before they could recover it. Chieftain Eli Tuttle didn’t wait as he scooped up the ball behind the

Soccer eliminated from tournament play

In 2016 the Osceola Chieftain soccer team was able to win a pair of games. Osceola was able to up their win total to four for the 2017 season and it could have been even better but the Chieftains dropped some close games and the Middle Border conference was loaded with a bunch of quality teams. Osceola earned the 6-seed for WIAA tournament play and opened playoffs in Rice Lake against the 3-seeded Warriors.

Rice Lake has not been a god place for Osceola to play in years past but the Chieftains invaded the Warrior’s turf in hopes of pulling off the upset. “(Last) week was spent in preparation for our first playoff game,” Osceola coach Nathan Anderson said. “We ended up the sixth seed and were to play Rice Lake the three seed. The last time we played Rice Lake was two years ago, and we were beaten 10-0. When looking at game film, we thought that if we were to stay between them and our goal, we should be able to limit their opportunities.”

Osceola opened the

game strong defensively and the contest was still scoreless until Rice Lake broke the ice scoring late in the first half, and then the proverbial roof fell in.

“In the 36th minute they scored on a 30-yard rocket to the top corner,” Anderson said. “It felt a little disappointing because my team did exactly what I asked them to, but was still scored on.

Before the end of the first half they added two more from a corner kick and a hand ball in the box.”

Osceola went into halftime trailing 3-0 but still had some fight left. Rice Lake scored a pair of goals to take a 5-0 lead but Gabe Baier spoiled the Warrior’s chance for a shutout when he netted the next goal of the game to make it a 5-1 contest. Gavin Peterson got the assist on the Chieftain goal. Neither team could score from that point on, thus eliminating Osceola from playoff action. Rice Lake then defeated a tough Middle Border conference team, Baldwin-Woodville, by a 1-0 score and will face Amery on Oct. 26th.

we have had our most successful season of the past three years. All of them put their all into every practice and game.

I have had them for the past three years and am saddened to see them go, but I know that they will succeed in anything that they choose to do.”

among the 15 that entered the Sectional race earned a trip to the State meet in Wisconsin Rapids this weekend. Those honors went to St. Croix Central with 62 points and Hayward with 75 points. Osceola was just nine points from the Hayward squad with a team total of 84. The way the team has been progressing it would have been fun to see them at State but they fell just short.

“The girls ran their best team race of the year,” Osceola coach Rachael Robinson said. “Each of them stepped up and made a huge push for a State qualifying spot. They are young and hungry. This was a huge step forward for them and I am so proud of how they progressed over the season.”

Although Osceola did not qualify for State as a team they will have an individual carrying the Chieftain colors in Rapids. Freshman Lauren Ellefson placed second overall in the race of 100 athletes and advanced to the State meet.

“Lauren ran a fearless race,” Robinson said. “She went out and led most of the race. I am so proud of how she has grown as a competitor and athlete in such a short amount of time.”

Ellefson is obviously a talented runner but she gives credit to her teammates for contributing to her success.

“Watching the boys team run at State last year inspired me to do the same,” Ellefson said. “This season has been a dream come true and I am happy to end it at State with the boys (team that also qualified).

The team has become my family. They’re supportive, motivational and have inspired me to push my limits. I am so grateful to have been a part of this team.”

Sophomore Caroline Gearin was close to qualifying for State as an individual but her 11th place finish did not quite make the cut. Freshman Shaylee Feske was the third Chieftain to finish crossing the line in 17th place. Another freshman, Alli Folgelberg was the fourth Osceola finisher and placed 25th overall. Junior Anna Swanson (29th overall) completed the Osceola scoring. Freshman Renee Vorndran (33rd) and sophomore Ari Backlund (43rd) ran in the sixth and seventh spots for the Chieftains respectively.

Ellefson’s experience in the State meet will be invaluable to build upon for Robinson and the Chieftains for next season. The entire team that ran at the Sectional meet will return next season as will a big chunk of a talented junior varsity squad. Osceola also has some good looking runners in the Middle School that will provide more depth for the Chieftains next season.

The boys’ team beat 28 out of 30 teams by the end of the season. Eighth Grader Quinn McDonald has been champion in six of nine meets. He and second Osceola runner Dillon Peterson are planning on competing at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships at UW-Parkside on Nov. 25.

SCF CC season ends in Boyceville

When and where: Oct. 21st, Sectional meet at Boyceville.

Results: The St. Croix Falls boys placed 15th out of 18 teams in the Sectionals at Boyceville. McDonell Central placed first and Augusta placed second with both teams advancing to State.

Highlight: Sophomore Trevor LaMirande placed sixth overall and missed qualifying for the State meet by one place.

LaMirande covered the 5,000-meter course in 18:07.

The girls placed seventh as a team out of 14 schools.

Glenwood City and Cameron placed first and second respectively as a team and qualified for the State meet in Wisconsin Rapids this Saturday.

Highlight: Junior Anna Klein was the top finisher for the Saints placing 10th overall. Klein had a time of 22:12 for the 5,000-meter race.

What this means: St. Croix Falls was unable to advance any runners to the State meet so their season came to an end at the Sectional meet.

St. Croix volleyball bumped from Regional in second round When and where: Oct. 17, at St. Croix Falls against Spooner Results: St. Croix Falls defeated Spooner in the first round of WIAA Regional play in three straight games. Scores of the games were 25-7, 25-13 and 25-14.

What this means: St. Croix Falls advanced to the second round of Regional play and hosted Webster.

When and where: October 19, at St. Croix Falls against Webster Results: The Webster Tigers upset the St. Croix Falls Saints by winning the match three games to one. Webster won the first two games by scores of 25-21 and 25-12. St. Croix Falls won game three 25-19 but Webster won game four 25-13 to win the match.

What this means: St. Croix Falls is eliminated from the WIAA playoffs. Webster advanced to the next round with their win over the Saints but lost to Colfax in four games.

When and where: October 20 at Grantsburg Result: Grantsburg 44, St. Croix Falls 0 St. Croix Falls earned an 8-seed in the WIAA football playoffs and got matched up against the 1-seed, the Grantsburg Pirates. Grantsburg demonstrated how they earned the top seed in the area with a convincing win. Grantsburg upped its overall record to 10-0 while the Saints finished at 4-6.

What this means: With the loss St. Croix Falls is eliminated from the playoffs. Grantsburg will host the 4-seed, Durand, this Friday.

And if the plug didn’t pass the test, the play would not go on.”

It passed.

“That first play was wonderful,” Dole said.

“It was an all-male cast.

They were sitting on stools reading the play. It was very, very exciting to be sitting in the audience, and it was happening.”

Dole has enjoyed watching the ArtBarn evolve since 1994.

“We’ve come a long way,” she said. “I’m really proud of it. I like the life the Barn has given to us. … The thing that’s so wonderful about it is it’s intergenerational and it involves art, it involves community, it involves drama, it involves fun things. … At one time there was even some poetry and some story writing. There’s room for that. And there are probably some surprises yet to be had.”

Polk County has its say in DNR’s Recreation Opportunities Analysis

Nearly 1,400 Wisconsinites responded to a recreational opportunities survey for the ‘Great Northwest Region’ of the state. According to a 19page draft analysis of that data released by the DNR earlier this month, nearly 20 percent of the respondents were from Polk County.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) solicited public input online and through the mail from August 3 to September 8, and also held several public meetings throughout the region to gather input.

The DNR’s Great Northwest Region comprises Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer and Washburn counties— more than 40 percent of which is in public ownership, the most of any region of the state, according to the analysis.

Still, more than 80 percent of respondents believed that more recreation opportunities were needed in the area, with the top three needs being trail related.

BENNETT: Spotting grouse no easy task, but exciting FROM PAGE 14

Getting a shot or actually bagging a bird is like landing a big fish this time of year.

It didn’t take long to figure out that many grouse put on frequent flyer miles this time of year to survive. I had to figure something out. I was spotting birds flying and walking over roads while driving from one good looking grouse spot to another but not on the trails where I was walking 5-7 miles a day. Then I put the pieces of the puzzle togeth-

er, the light went on telling me to get a little ways off the trails.

That was when I started to find more birds and actually got some good shots, no make that two good shots at a grouse before the first bird fell and Chase found it. Admiring the bird in my hand I was awestruck by its colors. I had never seen a grouse in this color phase.

I’ve taken many grey, brown , reddish and split phase grouse but this one seemed to be brown except for its brilliant rust colored ruff around its neck , hence the name

ruffed grouse.

After doing my research I found it was called an intermediate phase ruffed grouse. Most ruffs on a grouse are black colored that they show off during mating season or to stake out territory to attract females. This rarest grouse’s rust colored ruff with green tinges thrown in was in a word, amazing!

The horror of no homemade Halloween treats

N

ot having a plan for homemade Halloween treats is scarier than ghosts and goblins roaming around in the night.

Many people tell me Halloween is their favorite holiday. They love having neighborhood kids come to their door wearing fun costumes. Some parents tell me they have just as much fun as their kids do dressing up and going out trick and treating.

Half the fun of Halloween is planning out fun costumes and what kind of treats to hand out or kids think about what kinds of Wild Chow the treats they hope to get.

A few years ago I spent some time Lisa Erickson researching Halloween and what the traditions were before the advent of commercialized candy.

I was surprised to find that current television shows, like “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” had Halloween themed episodes in the 1940s. It was these kinds of shows that created a national interest in kids dressing up in costumes and going house to house trick or treating.

I’m sure people originally made homemade treats or candy and I’m convinced everyone knew each other, too.

I can imagine families making treats together that they were proud to hand out.

Today it’s much easier to buy a bag of candy than trying to make treats for 50 to 100 kids that may come to your door. Plus, as a parent, safety is a top priority and we no longer encourage our kids to accept homemade treats from strangers.

Even when I was young—which, in my mind, wasn’t that long ago, I would receive a handmade treat for Halloween from an older couple, Emma and Harold, who lived at the end of our block. They didn’t care that some parents wouldn’t allow their kids to eat her very special treats.

All the neighborhood kids would go to her house first before she ran out.

Most years she would hand out giant colored popcorn balls, but some years she made giant buttery peanut butter cookies that were chewy and crunchy at the same time.

They were perfect. Most of us would eat them while we were trick or treating. If the treat did make it home, they would be confiscated by our overly protective parents.

When we lived in town, I would make both a homemade treat and have store bought candy. I would let kids choose or take one of each. Interestingly enough, when I offered parents a treat—they ALWAYS took the homemade treat!

1 cup shortening 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup packed dark brown sugar 3 eggs 3 cups flour 2 tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. salt Preheat oven to 375°. In a large bowl, cream shortening, peanut butter and sugars until light and fluffy with a hand mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Roll into 4 in. balls. Place 6 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Flatten with a fork or meat mallet or with the bottom of an of a fashioned glass to create a pretty pattern on the cookie. Bake 10-15 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool.

Then board members voted 12 to 3 to partner with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as the trail’s sponsor (see sidebar for roll call vote).

The resolution renews the partnership between the county and DNR, setting in motion a planning process. That process includes public participation and a chance to comment on the draft plan.

Results of a draft analysis of a recent DNR survey indicate a desire for more hiking and bicycling trails in northwest Wisconsin (see related article in this issue, “Polk County has its say in DNR’s Recreation Opportunities Analysis”). However, the DNR noted that the survey used an “opt in” method that does necessarily represent the views of the average resident or range of local perspectives. The opportunity that was most frequently selected as needed in the Great Northwest Region was more trails for hiking, walking, or running, which was selected by more than onethird of respondents.”

Quality of the trail was selected by 72 percent of respondents as a factor that determines their favorite place to visit.

The most popular parks were Interstate Park and Copper Falls State Park, with Gandy Dancer Trail and Amnicon Falls State Park garnering nearly as much interest, according to the survey.

Survey respondents also provided valuable input for ATV/UTV enthusiasts.

“A growing demand for riding opportunities that has resulted in an increasing number of towns allowing ATV/UTVs on local roads by desig nating them as routes,” the analysis states.

“Most ATV/UTV riders prefer trails or routes that are winding and narrower rather than straight and wide. However, local roads (even if they are straight and wide) that provide a connection from one

Job Description: Receive orders, enter into IQMS, negotiate ship dates with customers following interaction with Scheduling, data entry, answer phone and responsible for managing customer survey program. The contest is based 70 percent on forage quality analysis and 30 percent on the judgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s score, providing an overall ranking score. There were 15 top notch entries in the Dairy Hay division and over 1,000 total entries in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contest, which is twice as many as last year.

Donald and Nancy Hasselquist of Osceola farm 160 acres and raise dairy replacement heifers.

Their goal is to meet most of the growing heifersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs with a high-quality alfalfa hay while balancing the ration to keep grain energy content at a minimum.

The couple sent a sample of their 2016 seeded CROPLAN brand HarvXtra Alfalfa to the World Forage Analysis Superbowl and won the grand champion title.

A good portion of the Hasselquistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; acres are on highly erodible soils (HEL), making alfalfa a smart option.

The Hasselquists plan to rotate these HEL acres to HarvXtra Alfalfa and keep it in rotation longer, whereas their flat acres of alfalfa are aggressively cut.
