A new kiosk outside the St. Croix ArtBarn is one of the first signs of a recent $20,000 donation to the arts center from Marie Schillberg and her late husband, John Schillberg. ArtBarn board members celebrated the gift last week with Mrs. Schillberg and Sharon Dole, the daughter of Mr. Schillberg’s first wife, Martha. Dole recounted the story of how the ArtBarn was born, illuminating the legacy of the Schillberg family and the former dairy barn. “I was at the very beginning,” Dole recalled. SEE ARTBARN, PAGE 16

Author traces natural history of North Branch Popular regional author Sue Leaf will be featured at the Third Annual Books & Biscotti event in Osceola on Thursday, October 26. Leaf will be talking about her book “Potato City: Nature, History and Community in the Age of Sprawl,” in which she traces the natural history of North Branch, Minn. and how it has been altered by farming and urban sprawl. Her presentation includes then-and-now photos of the area. Leaf is a naturalist and biologist whose personal experiences living in a Midwestern farming community have shaped

The Polk County Board last Tuesday affirmed the county as sponsor and managing coordinator of the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail. The Osceola Royalty celebrated autumn last weekend with visitors to the Dresser depot, who arrived via the Osceola St. Croix Valley Railway’s Pumpkin Express. The ladies volunteered as “royal face painters,” meeting families from Osceola and surrounding communities.
