Open Flame Theatre set to perform ‘The Wastelands’ BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@OSCEOLASUN.COM

Hope and despair. Life and death. The places in between. “The Wastelands,” a folk opera inspired by Dante’s “Purgatorio,” is an exploration of a world destroyed. Of grief, and humans’ relationship to nature. The performance, set for this weekend at Philadelphia Community Farm in Osceola, is the first in what Walken Schweigert calls not a trilogy but a triptych of stories. SEE THEATRE, PAGE 8

Inclusive Playground coming to OMC SUBMITTED

Open Flame Theatre will perform “The Wastelands” this weekend at Philadelphia Community Farm.

The dirt flying at Osceola Medical Center is the initial work of a new, all-inclusive community playground. Crews from J&S Contracting began preparing the site last week. When completed, the playground will feature handicapped accessible equipment and surfaces. “This playground will go be-

yond just ‘accessibility’ because it will encourage and enable disabled and non-disabled children alike to engage with one another in play and discovery,” according to Bob Wolf, Community Relations manager at OMC. When completed, it will be the only public inclusive playground of its kind in Polk County. Site prep is occurring this fall. Fin-

Five generations later, family still farming Nearly 100 years of wind power BY BRITTANY SHERMACH REPORTER

The years spread between five generations are numerous, and when a family shares the same passion throughout those years, a truly beautiful vision can be accomplished. This is evidenced by the Carlson farm sprawling over 2,600 acres of land; it is fully outfitted with fields, silos, barns, storage buildings, various farming equipment, a semi truck, and a wind turbine. Five generations of farmers built the farm from the ground up and continue overseeing it to this day. The story starts with BRITTANY SHERMACH | THE SUN

Veterans invited to ride in Homecoming parade The Capitals Club at Osceola High School is inviting past or current veterans to ride on their float during the Homecoming parade. The club would like to acknowledge and thank area veterans for their service. Why during Osceola’s Homecoming? Because the definition of Homecoming is “a return home.” This can be applied to alumni returning to Osceola for the football game, but it can also include welcoming home veterans. The club feels it’s a great time to welcome all who served our country as well as welcoming them back to our community. The parade is scheduled for Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. Please contact Pam Kaiser, (715) 294-2127 ext. 4120, to RSVP your spot on the Capitals float. The group will be loading the float at 12:30 by the baseball field. Join past and present veterans for our Homecoming parade on this annual celebration for the return of a group of people who share love for Osceola.
