New John Deere video series takes off in Balsam Lake

Jahnnalee Randall grew up with an airstrip in her backyard. Measuring half a mile long and 70 feet wide, it’s been there since she was a girl, though neither she nor her father can remember exactly what year it was constructed, only that it was before 9/11.

“It’s common, everyone has one!” she joked. But there’s also sincerity in her remark; the airstrip has become such a day-to-day aspect of life on her family’s East Balsam farm that it has ceased to feel unusual for her.

Jahnnalee’s father, David Randall, was and is a small-time pilot. But, with jobs both on and off the farm that had been in his family’s hands since the Second World War, he hardly had room in the day to drive the 30 minutes to Osceola or 20 minutes to Amery, where the nearest municipal airfields are located.

“I spent twice as long getting to the plane [than I spent flying in it],” David said. So instead of driving to the airport, he decided to make his own.

“This is a federal private airport, so I have to maintain it, ‘cause it’s on maps, it’s emergency landing,” you can hear him say at approximately 1:45 of “The Airstrip,” the first installment in John Deere’s #RunWithUs Instagram video series of eight. The series aims to share stories of how John Deere products are used in the lives of their faithful customers. The ArtBarn’s ambitious 2019 season continues this month with Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit.” The show revolves around Charles Condomine, an author writing a book about a medium who is supposed to be a charlatan.

As part of his research, he and his wife Ruth invite a “real” medium to their house for a dinner party. Madame Arcati, the medium, conducts a seance which they expect will be merely parlor tricks, only something, or rather someone, from Charles’ past gets conjured up.

Polk County, local communities undertake housing studies CONTRIBUTED POLK COUNTY EDC

Polk County and the communities of Amery, Balsam Lake, Clear Lake, Dresser, Luck, Milltown, Osceola and St. Croix Falls are kicking off the Polk County Housing Studies project.

Working with the Polk County Economic Development Corporation, with assistance from the West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (WCWRPC), the communities will identify housing needs and strategies.

Like many areas of Wisconsin, there are concerns throughout Polk County regarding a shortage of housing and rising housing costs. Business leaders believe that the lack of affordable housing is a factor in local workforce shortages while community officials worry about financial and physical burdens on senior households as well as the lack of desired

housing for younger households. The Polk County Housing Studies project will identify needs or gaps in the existing housing supply and provide recommendations and tools to help communities address these needs.

Over the next few months, the WCWRPC will be working to gather data to help identify housing needs, preferences, and demand. One primary source of data is a Workforce Housing Survey, prepared by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Survey Research Center. The survey will be distributed to a random sample of worker households throughout the County in mid-to-late September 2019. While this is a voluntary survey, households are encouraged to complete the survey as it will benefit the overall study results and help communities identify specific needs. Your response will be treated in a confidential man-

ner. If your household receives a survey, please complete the survey as your input is extremely valuable and is greatly appreciated.

Results from the survey and the housing study will be shared with the public at community housing forums, which are anticipated to be held in late 2019/early 2020. More information will be provided as the project moves forward.

This project is funded in part by the Wisconsin Department of Administration of Energy, Housing & Community Resources through a Community Development Block Grant – Planning (CDBG-PLNG) award.

Town of Osceola considers five-member board

At the suggestion of its newest supervisor, Brandon Whittaker, the Town of Osceola will consider increasing its town board from three to five members.

Whittaker explained his reasoning at the board’s September 3 meeting, saying the

change would allow for a broader dialog and give taxpayers greater representation. He pointed out that the town’s population has grown from just over 2,000 in 2000 to nearly 3,000 in 2019.

Moreover, the shift would prevent the possibility of a full board turnover and allow board members to talk one-onone between meetings

“This mix of current members with new members will help with educating the new members on the budget, items and issues that are currently being worked on,” Whittaker noted.

He proposed paying for the increase by adjusting board compensation. The chair’s pay would decrease from $10,240 to $8,000. The supervisors’ would be reduced from $6,114 to $3,400. The changes would bring pay closer to that of neighboring municipalities and avoid increasing taxes.

HOPE: Former foster kids cultivate opportunities FROM PAGE 1

With guidance from their parents, the siblings are founding a nonprofit organization to help kids new to the foster system and the adults who are supporting them.

The HOPE Foundation, an acronym for Helpful Opportunities for People Everywhere, is based on the idea of cultivating opportunities as opposed to giving handouts.

“It gives people a chance to do it themselves rather than having it done for them,” Jordan explained.

“Opportunities build character,” added Angel.

They’ll kick off fundraising efforts this weekend with a dunk tank at the Marine & Auto Custom Interiors expo.

“We’ve always seen the business as a stepping stone for our kids,” said Angel.

“No matter what direction that is, our business is there to support them. And what better time to help them get their feet on the ground with their nonprofit than to give them a spot at this event?”

The kids have been front and center in planning the organization, from crafting the mission to drawing a logo to presenting the idea to review boards.

Central to their idea is a foster care “closet,” a place where kids new to foster care can stock up on supplies.

“For the kids who get pulled out of their home on a Tuesday at 2 a.m. in the summer, resources are limited,” Angel said. “This would be a brick and mortar facility where someone gets a referral and they can go in and go shopping.

“It isn’t someone picking out what they think you or your children might need or want. It’s an opportunity for these children to make some decisions and own what they have. For a little kid it could be a teddy bear or a book. Five pairs of pants, shirts. The key point is that the kids are picking things out themselves.”

The center could also serve as a hub, helping connect kids to agencies and resources that can help them. And it

would be a place for kids new to foster care to connect with kids who have experience in the system, or talk to adults who are considering opening their home to foster children.

Ali said being involved in planning for the organization made her feel helpful “There’s not a closet or a big organization here,” she said. “And there are a lot of kids in foster care. Now I’m seeing it from a different view than if I were in foster care.”

They’re hoping to use their experience in foster care to improve that of others.

“In the end it turned out pretty fine, but the process of it was hard and difficult to cooperate with,” said Jordan. “I felt like I was pushed aside.”

“When you’re a kid you see adults and other children in different ways,” said Ali. “An adult is someone to guide you.

A kid is a friend and someone you can talk to. We had a lot of adults around us, but no kids.”

Added Angel, “I’ll never forget Jacob told me he thought they were the only ones going through it. A big thing they’ll be doing is showing these kids that they’re not alone.”

The 2019 Arnell Paws on the Trail Walk for Animals is just around the corner on Saturday, September 28. This great Canine Get Together at the head of the Stower Seven Lakes Trail in Amery is always a fun time.

Walk with a dog or with a friend on two legs or both. Walkers are able to enjoy the trail at their own pace and preferred distance after registration begins at 10 am. Colorful bandanas for dogs and T-shirts for registered Walkers with pledges raised of $25 or more will be available. Prizes will be awarded for Walkers raising the most pledge dollars. The Walk is a fundraiser for the animals at Arnell Humane Society and will carry on, rain or shine.

I’m referring to the letters extolling the virtues of a candidate and urging you to cast your vote for the subject on the letter writer.

We are gearing up for election season. In addition to getting to know the candidates seeking public office, we are rolling out a new policy concerning letters to the editor that endorse a candidate.

Starting today, we are charging for letters endorsing candidates.

Why are we making this change?

For years, candidates have encouraged supporters to write endorsement letters, knowing that letters to the editor traditionally have very high readership and are free. This is especially true in statewide or national races.

In some years, we have received nearly identical letters from numerous readers inside and outside of readership area. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that an organized letter writing campaign was underway.

I can’t fault campaigns. They understand that the pages of the newspaper is where readers turn to learn about issues and candidates before making their decision. Surveys show this to be true, but spending by political campaigns on print advertising continues to decline.

Between our coverage of candidates and their views on issues and letters to the editor, campaigns correctly figured they had this powerful medium sewed up. We chump newspapers were too stupid to know the difference.

Well, I’m here to tell you that even the staunchest defenders of free expression have their limits, and we have reached ours.

Will we still publish letters complaining about the actions of the school board or city council?

Sure will. We are looking to get paid for letters that urge readers to vote a certain way on election day.

If you feel passionate about your cause or candidate, $25 for a letter shouldn’t be a hardship.

Everything else is free game, as long as you meet the word count limits, keep it civil and avoid language that could get anyone sued.

Paid endorsement letter policy “We accept election letters endorsing or advocating for or against a ballot measure, party or candidate as paid advertising announcements. The fee is $25 minimum for a 250 word letter and 10 cents a word for additional words over 250. Like other letters to the editor, the writer’s name, address and phone number are required. Phone numbers are not published. We have the right to reject letters which don’t meet publishing standards and will determine if the letter qualifies as a paid endorsement. Paid letters will be identified with a label and may or may not appear on the opinion/letters page.”

Two weeks to a fond farewell

W

hen I started as editor of the Sun and Country Messenger I thought I might stay until I was very old.

The idea is still appealing to me. Imagine all the local lore and history I’d have collected by the time I was 80, after doing the job for almost 50 years. I’d rival the expertise of my dad’s cousin, Myron Lindgren, renowned in Scandia for his encyclopedic knowledge of people, places, dates and relations.

But things change, and with them our visions of the future. The biggest change for me, as you’ve probably guessed, has been having a child.

Editor I’ve never questioned the notion Suzanne Lindgren that if I had children I would continue to work, so after Strummer was born I took on the challenge of balancing motherhood and a demanding job.

Although I remember telling someone that tending to work and an infant wasn’t quite as difficult as I’d imagined it would be, it was certainly a challenge.

For the first several months I was mostly interested in proving to myself that I could do it.

After awhile I realized not only could it be done, I was doing it. True, each day felt like an improvisation, but somehow we made it through. The days added up to weeks, then months and years. Yes, it could be done. (And thanks to my husband’s dedication in the kitchen, we’ve even managed to eat more than frozen pizza, ramen, and mac and cheese.)

Then I started to ask a different question: Should it

be done?

I gave that a lot of thought. I weighed my desire for things like a consistent evening routine against the most meaningful parts of the job: meeting people in the community, hearing about their dreams and reflections on life, and helping to tell their stories.

For someone with deep roots in the area, this could never have been “just a job.” This is home. This is my community. We are all part of the history of this place.

I also considered what might be best for the paper and the community. Given the new limits on my time, would it be better for someone else to take the helm?

Certainly, I am not the only one who can do this work.

I was considering all these questions when a parttime position became available as an assistant clerk in Marine on St. Croix. It seemed like it would be a good fit. I have an affinity for Marine. As a “kid about town” on an every-other-weekend basis I ate many a cinnamon roll at the old Voyageur Cafe, drank orange pop at the Brookside before I was old enough for the cocktails, and my summers were sprinkled with trips to the Village Scoop. Weekends on the St. Croix were especially formative. I won’t bore you with the details, but I was offered the position last week and accepted. I decided to let readers know as soon as I could.

My last day at the paper will be September 23, so don’t get too excited. You have two more weeks of me before my final goodbye.

Chieftainettes and cheerleaders After many years of looking forward to reading articles about the sports our kids and grandkids have been involved in, we were so very pleased to see the Chieftainettes and cheerleaders featured in the Sept. 4 issue. They also work hard to achieve their fine performances for us fans and we so enjoyed being able to see who they are and read about them.

We loved seeing them recognized, as weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sure their parents and grandparents did, as well.

Turn On the Lights The American Library Association (ALA) and the St. Croix Falls Library (SCF) will celebrate Banned Books Week starting September 22. Is the purpose to promote freedom of expression, or is it to push another agenda? See https://bannedbooksweek.org.

Scan their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Top 11 Challenged Books of 2018.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Note that there is no mention of who makes the challenges and where they occur. The

listing includes these contesting reasons: promoting cop-hating, encouraging children to change their hormones, expressing religious viewpoints, using drugs recreationally, and displaying nudity.

Why do we have libraries in this Internet Age? They do offer many excellent informational, recreational, and technological programs, particularly for children. Why then does any library need to spend our tax dollars to advance libertine agendas? The popular media does that all too well. Nobody bans sales of these books/materials in our country.

We may order them at will from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. It is hard to imagine that many parents would provide any of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Challengedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ones on their own, and not for financial reasons.

The word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bannedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; describes something that does not happen today. Thus, ALA replaces that term midway through their website with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;challenged,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; because all 11 books are available in our local libraries through our Western Wisconsin Library lending system called MORE. ALA also uses other inflammatory words such as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;burned,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;attacked,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;censored.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;

Many seek to preserve Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Judeo-Christian underpinnings.

These consider the USA blessed beyond measure but not faultless.

Some others fixate on social injustices and seek to change vastly the American culture. This partisan split is widening. Organizational anthropologist Geert Hofstede had studied countries where this had happened. He warned, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cultural differences are a nuisance at best and often a disaster.â&#x20AC;?

THE POSTSCRIPT Blessings l in disguise d

hey say that blessings come in disguise.

If so, my blessings are poorly disguised. They show up wearing false noses and funny eyeglasses and are instantly recognizable unless I am being completely thick-headed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and it is astonishing how often I am.

I had a really bad year a few years back when I lost my husband and my job and my home in rapid succession. All of this happened while I was living in Nigeria (which was not great to begin with).

I realized immediately that this was very bad news. But I also figured out, pretty early on, that I had been given an opportunity to start my life from scratch. Nearly every day since I hear Columnist of someone else who has overcome tragedy, a dreadful illness, a setback Carrie Classon or disappointment in their life and found new meaning and purpose as a direct result of their terrible experience.

Somehow, it is almost harder to live with unexpected good news. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What the heck?â&#x20AC;? I say. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expecting this!â&#x20AC;?

Part of the challenge of navigating changes at mid-life is that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to follow any sensible trajectory. When I was in my 20s, things seemed to move slowly, but in an expected way. Thirty-plus years later, my life hopscotches from one thing to the next in a way that can be disorienting.

I started writing in earnest at age 50. I sold a book, started this column, and now am making plans to tour a show (with a musician!) that features writings from the book and the columns. It has all happened so quickly, I find myself feeling stressed and out of sorts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What was it I was supposed to be working on?â&#x20AC;? I ask myself, as my attention gets divided and diverted and drawn to something else. I worry that I am miss-

ing something. I worry that I am not paying sufficient attention. How is it possible I am getting anything done without working like mad to do it?

Part of this, I am convinced, is because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually have to start from scratch, as I thought I didâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;at least not completely. By middle age, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all picked up a skill or two â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even if it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always feel that way, even if those skills look quite different from the new thing weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing how transferable these skills turn out to be.

I call this getting â&#x20AC;&#x153;credit for time served,â&#x20AC;? and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wonderful thing. But it makes me feel a little woozy sometimes.

The cure for the dizziness and anxiety and disorientation is, like most things, surprisingly simple. I just have to remember to be grateful. Here I am, well past the beginning of â&#x20AC;&#x153;middle-ageâ&#x20AC;? starting something new and fun and exciting. The reason I get to do it is not because I deserve it or have worried enough, but because the world is filled with new, fun, exciting things. And for this I am very grateful.

I take a moment to remember that I have far more blessings than I could ever recognize. Nearly every time something does not go the way I expect, the result ends up better than I could have imagined.

Nearly every disappointment I encounter ends up opening up a possibility I would never have had the courage to consider.

Now, instead of panicking, I am working to train myself to recognize these blessings when they show up at my door. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s you!â&#x20AC;? I want to say to them when they show up, wearing yet another unexpected, slightly preposterous costume. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d recognize you anywhere.â&#x20AC;?

Early and mid autumn garden chores

We can all be the one to prevent suicide

N

ow is the time of year when our gardens are starting to come to their natural end. The air is crisp and it is pleasant to be outside.

The kitchen garden is ready for more harvesting. Picking the last of the tomatoes (if still green make sure to cover as the weather gets colder at night), lift the onions and potatoes, start checking pears and apples to see if they are ready to pick.

If your garden is starting to produce less veggies you may need to sow a cover crop (buckwheat is good) that you will till in in the spring to add nutrients. Pull spent plants and clean and store stakes and cages.

Your flower gardens need some Columnist TLC this time of year. Clear any Julie Kuehl summer plant debris from the garden, especially if it shows signs of disease or pests. This is a good time to divide and plant many perennials such as hostas, lilies and irises (remember irises are only planted so their roots are in the soil, the rhizome is above the soil).

You need 6-8 weeks before frost for perennials.

Take time now to plant spring blooming bulbs. Lift and store dahlias, gladioli, cannas and any tender bulbs, corms and tubers. If your containers are beginning to look spent and sad, dispose of plants and disinfect containers with water and bleach solution before storing for the winter.

This is a good time of year to reseed your lawn.

The warmer days and cooler nights help it get a good start. This is also a good time to look at putting a winter fertilizer on your grass. Keep mowing, but not super short. Also remove any leaves that fall to keep mold from your lawn.

I always like to leave at least some of the seedpods in my flower garden for the birds and for a little winter interest. I also like to cut the flower heads from my hydrangeas, dogwood branches, and many other flower heads (liatris, lambs ear, sumac, etc.) for using in dried outdoor arrangements for winter.

Suicide has the potential to impact anyone. It does not discriminate by race, age, socioeconomic class, or religion.

In Wisconsin, the suicide rate is four times the homicide rate with over 700 Wisconsinites dying by State suicide each year.

While those numbers are daunting, each of us can make a difference that could save a life. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and it is particularly important for us to elevate this issue in Wisconsin. Suicide rates in our state have risen by nearly 26% since 1999 according to the Centers for Disease Control — a rate two points higher than the national average.

As a medical examiner, I work closely with law enforcement to investigate deaths and speak with families who have been impacted by the death of their loved one. I know that each suicide creates a ripple effect that touches family, friends, and our entire community.

These deaths are preventable, and we can do more to reach people who are struggling.

We know what works: improving community preventive services, enhancing mental health treatment, and strengthening research and evaluation of our existing programs. People with previously identified mental illnesses make up about half of all suicides. We need more resources for people experiencing mental health crises in Northwestern Wisconsin, which is why I’m working across the aisle in Madison to create a system of prevention, not just hospitalization which may come too late. Over half of the people who complete suicide showed no diagnosable mental illness prior. We need a holistic approach that can reach every person in need, regardless of diagnosis.

Between 2009 and 2013, the suicide rates of Burnett, Polk, St. Croix, and Pierce counties were all higher than our statewide average. After watching the rate in St. Croix County grow from zero suicides in 2007 to 18 in 2011,

I took action and created the St. Croix County Suicide Prevention Task Force. Our group is dedicated to preventing suicide through a training known as Question, Persuade, Refer, or QPR. QPR training teaches people to recognize suicide risk factors in the people around them, as well as how to talk to someone who might be contemplating suicide. These trainings can be done in schools, local businesses, or anywhere in our community.

QPR- like CPR- can save the life of someone in trouble.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is also focused on prevention, and they are spreading the word through a #Bethe1To campaign. Be the one to ask if a friend or loved one if they are thinking about harming themselves. Be the one to separate them from anything they may use to hurt themselves. Be the one to listen without judgment. Be the one who connects them to help from family, religious leaders, therapists, or a hotline.

Exports are not the answer: Economic analysis shows dairy exports have little impact on milk prices

rowth in export markets has long been lauded as the measure of success in American agriculture. Last year U.S Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue credited exports for being a “major driver of the rural economy, generating 20 percent of U.S. farm income and supporting more than a million U.S. jobs.” Those statistics conceal a hidden truth that most farmers know first-hand: exports don’t actually bring better prices. In dairy, exports have reached historic highs — now topping 15 percent of the total U.S milk supply — but that growth has failed to provide farmers a livable wage.

In a recent webinar hosted by Wisconsin Farmers Union through the Dairy Together initiative, dairy economist Chuck Nicholson explained, “Price impacts of export growth tend to be limited. One of the reasons for that is the milk supply response. If we have opportunities to sell more product, typically the industry can respond fairly readily.” In other words, opening new markets generates demand in the short term, but farmers quickly ramp up supply right along with it. Any price increase is quickly neutralized.

Nicholson’s analysis shows that for every 1 percent increase in dairy components exported, the All-Milk price increases by only 10 cents.

Something about the word family brings warmth to the human heart. If you have a great one, there are instant fond memories.

If your family situation isn’t so great, you jealously observe those who have found the secret sauce to great relationships.

Awesome families don’t happen by accident. The work involved is long and arduous but well worth the effort! Parents often worry about being their child’s best friend. What children need is a parent who will give them direction, encouragement and loving correction. Guess where they learn that? By watching how their

parents treat each other!

Mom and Dad, the Bible tells you to train your children to be good, godly people. (So, it must be possible!) This training must come every day as you do everyday things with them. You are the prime example. When you drive somewhere with your children talk to them about the beauty of God’s creation. Tell them He made everything in perfect order to accomplish His purposes and to bless His people. Children need to learn to be thankful for the incredible world God has given them. If your child is bullied at school teach him/her how to establish healthy boundaries but also how to forgive. If you child fails on a test or does poorly in a sport these are prime opportunities to share about learning from

failure, developing grit and trying again.

Children need their parents to value their connection to God. Why not commit to regular attendance at your house of worship?

Your children will see that the spiritual side of their lives is as important as every other thing they do. Take time on the way home to discuss the message and look for ways to apply it to your lives. Your children will remember those moments.

Finally, the greatest virtue is love. A child who is loved is happy indeed. When a child sees loving and forgiving interactions between her parents, she is getting the training she needs to be a healthy productive adult. It is a big job, mom and dad, but you can do it!

Get deer tested for chronic wasting disease Deer hunting seasons are right around the corner, with the archery and crossbow season beginning on Sept. 14. The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters who harvest deer to have adult deer tested for chronic wasting disease.

2019 Surveillance This year, CWD surveillance will occur throughout 18 counties in northern Wisconsin as part of a multi-year rotation across the state. Enhanced surveillance efforts will also occur around wild and captive positive detections and in counties with low sampling numbers in recent years.

In addition, surveillance will continue in the Southern Farmland Zone and in select locations in CWD-affected counties in the central, northeast, and west-central part of the state. This in-

cludes counties that have had a wild deer CWD positive detection (Adams, Juneau, Portage, Eau Claire, Lincoln, Oneida and Marquette counties) as well as in the wild deer herd surrounding CWD positive captive deer facilities (Marathon, Eau Claire, Oneida, Shawano, Waupaca, Marinette and Oconto counties). Hunter service testing, free of charge, will continue to be provided for adult deer harvested statewide.

CWD Sampling Locations As in previous years, CWD sampling will be offered at various locations throughout the state. Options for CWD sampling include both in-person service as well as self-service options.

Self-service kiosks are a convenient way for hunters to have their deer tested for CWD, and feedback shows that hunters

appreciate this option. Kiosks provide a 24/7 drop-off option for hunters to help enhance sampling numbers, provide for ease of use and increase options in the world of electronic registration.

“The cooperation of hunters and private businesses is vital to the success of our sampling process. DNR staff thank all those who continue to assist with CWD surveillance,” said Tami Ryan, DNR’s acting director for the Bureau of Wildlife Management.

Hunters are reminded that CWD surveillance efforts focus on testing adult deer, since older deer are more likely to test positive for the disease. For their convenience, the DNR recommends hunters contact staffed sampling stations in advance to verify SEE CWD, PAGE 24

Steve Albert Bamberger was born Aug. 12, 1953, to Beverly Erickson and Richard Bamberger in Beloit Wis. At the age of 17 Steve e enlisted in the Marines.

H He served a tour of duty in V Vietnam. When he returned h home he hauled milk for a llocal trucking company. He llater became employed in S Stillwater, Minn., as a priso on security guard. Within a few years he drove semi o over the road.

Steve is one of twin boys.

E Each weighed 3 pounds w when they were born. They sspent 65 days in an incub bator before they could go home. They were news back then.

When Steve was 30 he had a tumor removed from his brain.

He was a very strong Christian at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. He loved our Savior Jesus Christ and would tell his sister that’s why he went to church, to hear and learn about the Lord. He was also thrilled that there is a museum in the church. He said he had never seen that in a church.

He took many walks around Osceola and made some friends.

He loved the country and found it sad that a lot of farms are no longer in operation and there are very few cows!

Steve was preceded in death by his mother Beverly Erickson, Richard Bamberger, and brother James Bamberger (twin), his brother Brian D. Bunker of Nevada.

Steve is survived by his sister, Toni (Randy) Wahl and brother, Kevin Bunker; niece, Kari Jo Wahl (Pete Krumrie); nephew, Curtis L. Wahl; two great-nieces, Dakotah Faith Krumrie and Victoria Lynn Krumrie and three great-nephews, Austin D. Wahl, Trystan Edward Krumrie, and Logan Randall Krumrie.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sept. 11, at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in St. Croix Falls, with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Osceola.

Darcia Jen (Anderson) Schultz of Balsam Lake died surrounded by family Aug. 27, 2019 at her home. She was 54.

Darcia Jen Schultz was b born Aug. 25, 1965, at the S St. Croix Regional Medical C Center to LaVerne and Joan ((Hanson) Anderson.

She attended Osceola H High School, graduating c class of 1983.

After graduation, Darcia w was employed with Plastic P Products and later started w working for Andersen Wind dows in Bayport, Minn., rretiring after 22 years.

Darcia enjoyed fishing on the Lake of the Woods, being up north at the cabin as a child, snowmobiling, arts and crafts, bowling in the 2000s with Susie Jasperson, watching the birds, nature and going to garage sales with Nancy Wilson. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her children, watching them grow and attending their sporting events. She will be deeply missed by many.

Darcia was preceded in death by her parents, LaVerne and Joan Anderson, grandparents, George (Amanda) Anderson, Herman (Jennie) Hanson.

Darcia is survived by her husband, Dale Schultz; children, Mitch Meyer, Mariah Meyer and McKenzie Meyer; Valerie Schultz and Spencer Schultz; grandson, Miles Schultz; brother, David Anderson; special cousin Teri Hanson; father of Mitch, Mariah and McKenzie, Timothy Meyer and many other relatives.

Gerald (Jerry) L. Weinmann died at home peacefully Aug. 29, 2019, with his wife of 53 years by his side.

He was 80.

Jerry was born Aug. 15, 11939 to John and Eileen ((Peck) Weinmann of St. P Paul, Minn. He was raised iin St. Paul and then served iin the U. S. Navy for four y years before being honora ably discharged.

Jerry married the love of h his life, Barbara Garske, in 11965. He worked at 3M BPSI a and was later transferred tto western Wisconsin. They rrelocated, built a home in rrural Amery and raised five amazing children. Jerry worked in the packaging machinery industry for over 30 years, primarily with MRM/Elgin in Menomonie, Wis., traveling globally for some of that time.

Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, beekeeping, and Saturday nights at Cedar Lake Speedway. Together, he and Barb cultivated nature and enjoyed all it brought into their lives. Jerry touched many lives and found great joy in bringing people together at the Annual Weinmann Family & Friends Picnic. Jerry lived life to the fullest and was always the first to lend his hand to anyone in need. Jerry was many things: a hard worker, a storyteller (both fact and fiction… sometimes a little of both), a hunter, a fisherman, a card player and a prankster. He excelled in all of his roles: as a loving, kind, and supportive husband, a dad, a grandpa, and a friend. Jerry’s legend and his many stories will live on and bring joy, as well as tears and laughter, to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eileen (Peck) Weinmann; brother, John “Jack” Weinmann; sisters, Susan Weber, Janet Cummings, Elaine Kohn and his son-in-law, Allen Mielke.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; children, Craig (Diane) Weinmann, Sandra Weinmann, Pamela Mielke, Linda Weinmann, and Mary Jo (Andrew) Benson. Additionally, he leaves behind eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, brothers, Robert (Marilyn), Charles (Lane), sister, Victoria (Robert) Knoth, brothers-in-law Larry Kohn and Robert Cummings, sister-in-law Joetta Weinmann, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 6 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Osceola.

Family interment will take place at a later date.

Adelaide I. Albrecht Adelaide I. Albrecht was born to Emil and Frieda (Bartz) Hageman on March 27, 1919 in Garber, Iowa.

She was the oldest and last of five children.

They were a farming family, and moved between Wisconsin and Iowa in her youth.

When she was 20 years old, Adelaide moved to St. Paul, Minn., with her sister. She started her career as a teacher, but then moved on to an administrative position during the war. After the war was over and she had to give her job back to a man returning from service, she took a role at St. Paul Buick where she met her husband, Curtis Albrecht. They married in 1952, and adopted two children, Michael and Heidi.

They raised them between Shoreview and the Chisago Lakes area, and had a home on North Center Lake in Center City for 35 years.

Most recently, Adelaide was living in Osceola to be near her beloved church community at Trinity Lutheran.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Curtis; son, Michael; one brother; and three sisters.

Adelaide is survived by her daughter Heidi (Tim) Neff; grandchildren Andrea (Mike) Olson, Randy (Lindsay Schmitt) Neff, Crystal (Jason) Wanderi, and Becky Khammivong; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were Sept. 9 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osceola. Interment at Oak Grove Cemetery in East Farmington.

Snow Removal The School District of Osceola is requesting prices on snow removal and sanding for the 2019-2020 school year.

Seasonal contract for snow removal on all lots and playgrounds as needed. Price includes all snow removal for the snow season starting October 1 through May 31. She does contact a spirit who happens to now be stuck in the house permanently.” The spirit in question is played by Jessica Cormican. Previously seen as Shelby in last summer’s “Steel Magnolias,” and Karlene in “Ole and Lena’s Wedding,” Cormican says the most challenging and rewarding thing about playing this part is how different she is from the character.

“It’s pushed me outside of my comfort zone.”

Jane Campbell plays Mrs. Bradman, one of the dinner guests invited to the seance. She’s the

only guest who actually believes in mediums and fortunes...”she thinks something very exciting is going to happen.”

Man injured in August 31 crash CONTRIBUTED WISCONSIN STATE PATROL

At 6:40 a.m. Saturday, August 31, a crash occurred on Highway 65 at W Church Road in Polk County near Clear Lake.

Assisting agencies included St. Croix County Sheriffs Department, Polk County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department, and New Richmond EMS.

The crash involved one injury.

The details of the crash are as follows: On Aug. 31, 2019, at approximately 6:40 a.m., the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a two-vehicle head on-crash on STH 65 just north of the Polk/St. Croix County line in Polk County.

A northbound vehicle, driven

by Adam Weiler, 35, was attempting to negotiate a curve when it

crossed into the southbound lane and struck a southbound vehicle being driven by Jacob Ostrowski, 30.

Ostrowski was airlifted to Regions hospital with life-threatening injuries. Weiler was arrested for fifth offense OWI by Polk County Sheriffs office. The crash remains under investigation.

Tigers’ aerial attack too much for Chieftains to handle

It was only the first Middle Border conference football game of the season but it is hard to believe that there will be a better one than there was last week at Robert W. Vesperman athletic complex in Osceola. The New Richmond Tigers came to town to challenge the Chieftains and left with a 35-21 win in an offensive battle.

“Our boys played their butts off,” Osceola coach Scott Newton said. “I was very happy with our overall team effort.

We had some execution errors against a very athletic team but if we continue to practice and play with the same effort we gave (last) Friday

night, we will continue to improve.”

Each team found their offense in a different way.

Osceola pounded the ball with a punishing ground game amassing 300 yards rushing and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. New Richmond also had an effective ground game but their diverse attack featured a stellar passing attack. Quarterback Tim Salmon completed 14 of 18 passes good for 304 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target was Joey Kidder who collected eight passes for 188 yards and a pair of TDs. New Richmond scored on each of their first two possessions. Soccer team fit to be tied in Menomonie

The Osceola Chieftain soccer team went on the road last Saturday to challenge the Menomonie Mustangs in a non-conference matchup.

Osceola went into the game having played some pretty solid soccer so far this season but was still in search of their first win having lost their first three games.

Osceola came close, oh so close, to putting the game against Menomonie into the win column. Still leading 2-1 with a minute to play the Mustangs notched the tying goal to salvage a 2-2 tie with the Chieftains.

Osceola scored first at the 21’ mark of the game when Sean Archibald found the back of the Menomonie goal. “I got the ball at the left corner of the 18 and I faked two people with a move and then I dribbled passed two more and put it in the left corner,” Archibald said in describing his goal.

Menomonie scored early in the second half to knot the game at a goal apiece but then Archibald untied it. “In the 62nd minute I got the ball in the middle of their half and faked their first defender then four surrounded me,” Archibald began in describing his go-ahead goal. “I flicked the ball through them to put me in a one-on-one with the goalie and I kicked the ball through his legs to put us in the

stifled many of Menomonie’s attacks at defense.

Osceola opened their week with a Middle Border conference game

Before the season started the Osceola Chieftain cross country team appeared to have a chance to be very good, at least on paper. Osceola returned most of the squad from last year when both the girls and boys teams placed first in their respective Sectional races and finished their season at the State meet. The Chieftains also had some very promising incoming talent.

In any sport you can analyze the on-paper aspects and theorize what may be but championship teams aren’t made of paper.

The work that goes into preparing for the season is as important to the work that happens during the season. It appears that the on-paper excitement of the OHS cross country team will translate to success on the courses this year.

Osceola competed in a huge meet at Eau Claire North high school last weekend, the Husky Invitational. In a meet comprised of mostly D-1 schools the Chieftains more than held their own as a D-2 team. The Osceola girls placed second behind only Hudson who defeated the Chieftains by just nine points.

“I am extremely happy with the results from (Saturday’s) race,” Osceola coach Rachael Robinson said. “The girls team made a very strong statement. All the miles they logged this summer and their constant desire to improve was evident in the results.”

The top finisher for Osceola was freshman Rachel Ulrich who placed second overall losing only to meet medalist Rachel Ball of Hudson. Ulrich was competing in her first high school varsity race of 5,000 meters after being a standout performer in middle school last year.

“The biggest difference between the middle school and the high school cross country races for me is the longer distance and the size of the meets,” Ulrich noted. “I can’t believe the fans and support. Also, my upperclassmen teammates have been super welcoming and helpful. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a community of great people and role models.”

Osceola volleyball team ready for MBC action

The Osceola Chieftain volleyball team got what they needed as they readied themselves for Middle Border conference play — lots of experience.

Their most recent contest resulted in a three game sweep of the Hayward Hurricanes. Next up for Osceola will be the Chieftain Invitational, played at the local high school gym on Sept. 14. The first conference contest will be on Sept. 19 against New Richmond.

There is no doubt that when Osceola Chieftain tennis coach Beth Friedrichsen saw her roster at 25 athletes for the first day of practice she was smiling from ear to ear.

Yes, the big numbers that she was looking at would make her and assistant coach Brent Bundgaard’s jobs more difficult, but they weren’t afraid of the challenge. Neither are the 25 kids on the roster which is led by six talented seniors.

“The depth of this year’s team is incredibly exciting

and I’m lucky to be a part of it,” Chieftain senior Makayla Quigley said. “The girls this year are so close in talent that it pushes each and every one of us to play harder for what spot we want to play for. With the long bus rides and overnight tournaments, it’s really brought this year’s team closer and not only improved our skills but our capabilities and trust in our team. It’s amazing to know how much the team has grown from the first practice to now. With this year’s team depth and trust in one anoth-

Football and preseason hunting hat first pair of blue winged teal came in fast and low on the opening day of the early season.

It took a moment to make that positive identification before we were able to shoot and that was all it took. Cutting in low and fast they were in and out before we could get off a good clean shot as they flew over our decoy spread unscathed. We just weren’t ready and we got caught off guard, something teal do.

For me, the September 1 early teal, goose and dove hunting season is kind of like preseason football. It has its moments but it’s the regular season that counts, but it’s the only Wild River game in town now. Just ask any Green Bay Packers fans after that Trails big regular season win in Chicago Jim Bennett September 5 after a dull preseason.

Hunters, like football players, have

to make a decision and then come up with a game plan. Dove, teal or goose hunting are as different as a home game is to an away game but for the most part it’s the wild game with the home field advantage.

Teal have the most advantage in the field right now and they are the most difficult to pattern. Most teal harvested in the Badger State come in from out state and those birds haven’t arrived yet. Dove haven’t grouped up yet, so now they are only in family groups and won’t be in big groups until later in the season, most likely in a state south of us. Canada geese are probably the easiest to pattern in the early season but getting permission to hunt limited locations can be a real drawback.

The Chieftains competed in a 9-hole Middle Border conference event at Bristol Ridge in Somerset last week and placed sixth as a team, just three shots behind fifth place Amery and nine behind fourth place Ellsworth. Osceola currently resides in eighth place in the MBC standings but is only a point from seventh place Somerset. “(Last) Thursday night at Bristol went pretty good for us,” Osceola coach Lisa Richert said.

“We shaved 15 strokes from our last time finish of seventh, to finish sixth this week at Bristol. Shelby (Tembreull) had her personal best score this far and is excited for our next match promising to even drop more strokes.

Everyone else is playing with more confidence, and with much practice on staying mindful of our

game, making adjustments, and being more accurate with our chip shot so less putts need to be made.”

New Richmond won their third straight MBC event in the meet at Bristol and is showing that they will be hard for anyone to catch. The Tigers had a team score of 186.

The Osceola team score was 220 led by Mady Link with a 52. Link’s score tied for the ninth best overall score of the day out of 39 golfers. Close behind Link for Osceola was Savanna Nord with a 53 and Brooklyn Wegner with a 54. Tembreull continued to improve her game for the Chieftains by shooting a 61.

“I think my game is improving as we get further into the season with more practice,” Tembreull said. “Also I have been trying to focus more on just playing one shot at a time, and not focusing on numbers.”

The season is still early in MBC play. Osceola is showing signs of moving up in the conference standings and hopes to hit the upper half by season’s end.

Whittaker would like to see the board approve the increase in the coming months so that constituents could vote for additional board members next spring.

Several residents expressed support for the idea during public comment, including Warren Johnson, Tom Magnafici, Jim Berg and Neil Gustafson.

Supervisor Mike Wallis voiced an interest in exploring the idea further. Less friendly to the idea, Chair Doug Schmidt expressed concerns about increased temptation among board members to

violate open meeting laws, as oneon-one discussions are allowed outside of meetings. He also said the town had discussed the issue before and constituents had been opposed to the idea.

Whittaker invited more discussion and input from residents.

“I want people to come to the next meeting to speak about whether they’re for or against a five-member board,” he told The Sun. Other business • Instead of hiring a part-time snowplow driver, the board will consider hiring a second full time public works employee.

• Chair Doug Schmidt noted that the plan commission will continue to discuss the town’s potential positions on concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and broadband. Schmidt also noted that the commission itself is not a policy-making body and any changes to town code would go through the board.

• Supervisor Brandon Whittaker suggested working with Public Administration Associates to evaluate the workload of town staff and offer input regarding staffing and potential hiring needs.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection that a captive elk on a captive elk farm in Burnett County tested positive for CWD. State law requires that the Wisconsin DNR enact a ban on feeding and baiting of deer in counties or portions of counties within a 10-mile radius of a captive or free-roaming domestic or

wild animal that tests positive for CWD or tuberculosis. As required by law, this will create a threeyear baiting and feeding ban in Burnett County and two-year baiting and feeding bans for Barron, Polk and Washburn counties beginning September 1, 2019. All four counties are already considered CWD-affected due to the 2011 wild CWD positive deer detection in Washburn County.

“The girls played well,” Osceola head coach Holly Johnson understated.

“All of our girls got a chance to play. It was a fun team win.”

The statistical leaders were spread among a total of 15 varsity members with every player contributing. Makena Hollman was the team leader in kills with four followed by Julia Daniels with three. Ellie Gillespie led the team with four blocks with Hollman adding three. Mathea Leiskau had a team-high five assists with Kaili Bradway contributing four. The highlight of the Chieftain statistics was their serving. Osceola had a total of 14 service aces over the three games with Leiskau getting seven and Sydney Bents five.

“So far this season our success has come from our ability to rise together and truly play as a team,” Bents said.

“Each of my teammates offers a different element that strengthens us as a whole. I believe that if we continue to play hard and encourage one another there will be some excellent matches against our

competitive Middle Border Conference teams.”

Osceola was coming off a solid performance at the Menomonie Sprawl the previous weekend.

It was a two day tournament with the Chieftains getting three wins against a single loss in the opening day. Osceola defeated Prairie Farm (25-20, 18-25, 15-11), Stevens Point (25-23, 22-25, 15-13) and Hudson (25-20, 25-20) and lost to Eau Claire Regis.

On the second day of competition Osceola had a tough bracket due to their impressive first day performance. The Chieftains fell to Chippewa Falls McDonnell and Oshkosh West in three game matches and dropped a two set match to Columbus Catholic.

With their two day performance Osceola placed eighth overall.

“Overall eighth out of 40 teams,” Johnson remarked. “The girls played hard. They struggled to finish on day two but always played competitively. Overall the team wasn’t jiving but we are happy with an eighth place finish. It shows us that we can play well and compete with the best but have work to do to refine our play and step up in the big moments. The girls were fun to watch.”

EXPORTS: Not dairy’s answer FROM PAGE 6

20 percent of the U.S milk supply, a 5 percent increase from 2018 levels. USDEC claims that export growth benefits everyone in the industry: farmers, consumers, and everyone involved in the complex dairy supply chain. But Nicholson’s analysis suggests that may not be the case.

“The primary benefits will go to farms that are growing because they are the ones that will be supplying that additional product that goes into export markets. Other benefits will go to supply chain partners like the processors and exporting companies that are also part of facilitating trade flows of dairy products outside the U.S.” Exports do contribute to farm income, but the profits are not distributed equally among dairy farmers or throughout the supply chain. Nicholson explains the income distribution issue this way: “The average milk price does not increase that much by increasing exports. So farms that are not growing are going to see milk revenues that look a lot like the revenues we would see if we weren’t exporting very much. The place where there is a difference is farms that are growing will see a larger demand for their milk. The benefits are not higher prices, but bigger quantities.”

That’s why many farmers feel pressured to expand their operations to stay afloat. But others cannot or do not want to manage a large dairy operation. For them, higher prices are the only way to stay in business.

Since the price bottomed out in 2014, 7,339 U.S dairy farms have called it quits. If we want to save the 37,000 dairy farms that remain, as well as the rural communities they support, we need higher prices. If higher prices are the goal, then exports are not the answer.

Tips to make your home more cat-friendly Are backyard chickens right for you?

Millions of people cannot imagine life at home without their cats. Cats make wonderful pets, bringing their own unique personality into a home and providing companionship to their owners.

As great as cats are, millions still enter animal shelters every year. According to the ASPCA, roughly half of the 6.5 million companion animals that enter United States animal shelters each year are cats. And while figures are thankfully on the decline, hundreds of thousands of those cats end up being euthanized.

Local animal shelters are home to many cats that would make great pets, and prospective cat owners are urged to visit such shelters to find cats that would make welcome additions to their homes.

For those who find cats to take home, the following are a handful of ways to make a home as cat-friendly as possible.

• Take stock of appliances that pose as safety risks.

Certain appliances pose potentially significant threats to cats’ safety. For example, International Cat Care notes that open washing machines or tumble dryers, particularly those with warm clothes inside, may be too tempting for cats to ignore. Unsuspecting homeowners may close the doors to washers and dryers, trapping cats inside, or even turn the appliances on without recognizing the cats are inside. Always keep doors to such appliances closed, and check to make sure cats are not inside before using these appliances. Paper shredders and work stations with lots of wires also pose a safety risk to cats, so make sure these appliances and areas are inaccessible.

• Watch how cats behave around cat flaps. Some cats respond positively to cat flaps, while others do not. Cat flaps also may invite other cats into a home, which can upset your cat and make it vulnerable to attack. While some cats may want the freedom a cat flap allows, others may be on edge around the cat flap.

Let cats’ behavior dictate if you will keep the cat flap or not.

• Watch how cats drink water. International Cat

Care notes that the presence of water near food may deter some cats from drinking enough fluids.

That’s because cats naturally hunt for food and water separately. Some cats may be fine if food and water are in the same bowl, but if you notice your cat is ignoring its water bowl, try placing it elsewhere in the home to ensure your cat gets enough fluids.

• Provide high but safe resting places. Cats want to rest and observe their surroundings from on high. Don’t deter cats from resting in such places, but make sure they’re positioned in such a way that cats can safely get down when they want to.

Cats make wonderful pets, particularly when welcomed into cat-friendly homes.

How to keep a pet-friendly home clean Dogs, cats and other companion animals can be wonderful to have around, breathing energy into a family. Despite the advantages pets can bring, they tend to be a little messy. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to have a pet and maintain a clean home.

• Manage pet fur. Grooming the pet regularly (preferably outdoors) will help tame some of its fur.

Covering sofas and other places where pets like to lounge with an old sheet can contain some of the fur where it can be shaken off outdoors and laundered frequently.

• Upgrade your vacuum. You’ll need a vacuum with strong suction to pick up fur, dirt, dander, feathers, birdseed, and other debris that can accumulate thanks to pets.

• Pause for paws at the door. Keep a small container of water by the front door. When returning from walks, dip the dog’s paws into the water and dry

before entering the house.

• Get the right cleanser. Pet owners must contend with accidents. Look for an enzymatic cleanser that will treat stains and odors so that pets do not return to the soiled area again and again thinking this is an acceptable potty location.

• Choose the right upholstery. Look for top-grain, semi-aniline leathers, as scratches are disguised on such pieces. In terms of fabric, microfiber or microsuede are better suited to pets because the fabric is tightly woven and may be more resistant to fur and soiling.

• Launder pet items. Regularly wash bedding and other belongings that pets use.

• Keep nails neat. Clipping dog and cat and other small animals’ nails may help avoid scratches on furniture and floors.

Pet owners can keep their homes clean regardless of how much dirt their pets track into the house.

Raising backyard chickens has been a growing phenomenon for several years. Many cities have passed laws legalizing backyard chickens, encouraging many to raise chickens as a rewarding hobby.

One of the biggest benefits to raising backyard chickens is that their eggs are fresher and often tastier than storebought varieties.

Hens can lay one egg per day. Multiply that egg per hen, and breakfast is always available.

Another benefit to chickens is they produce a natural fertilizer that can be used in gardens.

“The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says chicken manure can be composted, aged and eventually added to the garden. In about six months, a person will accumulate about one cubic foot of manure per chicken. Egg shells and other compostable material can be added to create an even richer formula.

Chickens also can help control bugs around the yard, offers the experts at Tractor Supply Company.

Before investing in backyard chickens, people should determine if chickens will fit with their lifestyle. Costs and care are a big consideration.

Each chick will cost anywhere between $3 to $5.

Then there’s feed to consider. The most expensive item will likely be the coop. The experts at The Happy Chicken Coop, a resource for raising chickens and starting coops, says handy men and women can build coops, but ready-made ones will cost a few hundred dollars. The coop will need to offer around four square feet of space per chicken (or what’s recommended for the breed).

Despite being seemingly independent birds, chickens need people to be active caregivers. They require feed and water daily. The chickens will need a caregiver while you vacation. People who are frequently away from home should reconsider chickens.

Chickens also are prone to worms, parasites and lice. They need to have rear feathers trimmed to stay clean and sanitary, and they will require an area where they can “dust” and self-groom. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises not to cuddle and kiss chickens like pets because they can carry salmonella. Not every coop is completely varmint-proof, and some chickens may succumb to predators. Squeamish or sentimental folks may find chickens aren’t the right fit.

Chickens require commitment and care that many people can provide. It is essential to do one’s homework to ensure that backyard chickens are a sound investment.

but we found a wetland we named “The Narrows” where we find teal feeding regularly. But on the opener they were flying down the narrow wetland away from our blind where two other groups of hunters were set up. Nothing is more frustrating than being close to other hunters who are getting good shooting when your blind is quieter than a kindergarten room

at nap time.

Eventually more birds did show up. Josh was ready for the next group of teal that came in, although he needed a little more time to ID these green winged teal. He was focused on seeing blue winged teal, not thinking greenies had shown up although I spotted a group earlier. He was able to drop the lead bird in this flock of 3 greenies with a single shot but missed the last bird, a

single blue winged teal that was bringing up the rear. And of course what’s flying more than anything else in the sky? Dove are everywhere, but not where this little band of duck hunters are set up. Looks like it’s time to change the game plan.

I

s there anything better after a long week than a hunk of delicious cheese and a glass of wine? I’m trying hard not to say, “I love cheese,” but I can’t help myself.

I know I write almost every week that I love this or that, but cheese tops my food obsessions.

Cheese is the most amazing food on earth. How can milk be made into so many different tastes and textures? Blue, mozzarella, cheddar, brie, parmesan, gouda, halloumi, Beaufort, Swiss, mascarpone, burrata, fontina, cottage, and feta to name a few—and those are all made from cow’s milk.

I didn’t even mention cheeses made from sheep, goats or water buffalo.

I like cheese so much that I decided to pursue a career in the dairy industry. I manage a creamery, and I’m working toward getting a Wisconsin cheesemakers license, no easy task. On average, it takes two years to get a probaWild Chow tionary license. You need to take five 40-hour short courses under Lisa Erickson a licensed cheesemaker through the Center for Dairy Research at h University U i i of Wisconsin, apprentice under a the licensed cheesemaker, and pass a two-hour written exam. Masters must make cheese full time for a minimum of 10 years and produce a particular cheese for at least 5 years. Uffdah!

The good news is you can make cheese for yourself at home without a license. Cheese made at home is a “baby” or “young” unaged cheese. The varieties that come to mind are quark, curds, and farmer’s cheese, the easiest cheese to make. It only has 3 ingredients: milk, vinegar, and salt.

Homemade Farmer’s Cheese ½ gallon whole milk (I use Crystal Ball Farm’s all-natural whole milk) ¼ cup white vinegar 1 tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. chives or scallions chopped fine Thermometer Cheesecloth Colander In a large saucepan, bring the milk just to a boil, 190º. Do not let the milk come to a rapid boil. Using a thermometer is key to this recipe. Remove from heat.

Add the vinegar. The curds will begin to form immediately. Let the milk rest 15-20 minutes. Stir in the chives.

Dampen the cheesecloth with water and place the cheesecloth double-folded over the colander with the edges hanging over on all sides; hold in place with clips if necessary. Place the colander over a large bowl. Slowly pour the curd mixture over the cheesecloth, catching the whey in the bowl. When the whey has drained off the curds, gather the ends of the cloth, twisting the gathered cloth and squeezing the remaining whey off the curds. With your hand, gently squeeze the curds to remove the last drops of whey. Reserve the whey.

In another large bowl, unwrap the curds but keep the cloth beneath the curds. The curds will be dry.

Add 1-2 Tbsp. of whey back to the curds if you like your cheese creamier. Stir in salt. Without squeezing the curds hard, reshape them into a ball or disk. Plate the cheese wrapped in the cheesecloth and cover with a bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Uncover, plate and serve with fresh bread or crackers.

er, we could do great through conference and also playoffs.”

The talent at practices is starting to show big results for the squad on the courts. Osceola got four quality matches in at a meet in Altoona and was able to win three of those contests.

The Chieftains defeated Medford 5-2, Altoona 4-3 and Black River Falls 4-2 and fell to Luther 7-0. Friedrichsen was able to get a look at several different combinations as she sorts out what her best lineup will be.

Last week Osceola had a pair of matches and again success in both. The Chieftains defeated the Barron Bears 5-2 and followed that with a 6-1 win over the Unity Eagles. Against Barron Jam Dannenmueller posted a win at No. 2 singles, Sophia LaVigne at No. 3 singles and Caitlin Karun in the No. 4 singles spot. All three wins were in straight sets.

The No. 2 doubles team of Quigley

and Ella Salewski and the No. 3 doubles team of Rachel Olson and Kathryn Marek also won in straight sets.

Unity has a small roster and was forced to forfeit a pair of matches in the 6-1 loss to Osceola. Of the matches that were contested Hope Lowney (No. 1 singles), LaVigne (No.3 singles), Maddy Jensen and Paige Dvorak (No. 1 doubles) and Quigley and Salewski (No. 2 doubles) all came up with straight set wins for the Chieftains.

“The girls are playing really well right now,” Friedrichsen noted. “Of course, there are some things that we need to be working on and I am looking forward to this week because we have three days of practice before we play Amery at home. That will be the real test of how we are doing. The girls will have to be able to attack soft second serves, know their placement of the balls and get serves in to have success against Amery.”

FOOTBALL: Tigers make successful attack FROM PAGE 10

gers at third down and 10 or more yards to go three times in their opening possession but could not come up with the big play to get off the field.

New Richmond’s first touchdown was on a 38-yard Salmon pass to Joe Powers. Their second score was via a 3-yard blast by Cooper Strand.

When New Richmond scored the Chieftains responded. Osceola’s first touchdown drive was seven rushes for 77 yards capped off by a Nick Carlson 1-yard run. Carlson set up his score with a 64 yard carry behind a solid offensive line that opened a huge hole for him. The second Chieftain touchdown was another 1-yard score

by Carlson. This drive was 11 plays covering 62 yards, all on the ground.

The big gain of the series was a 28 yard run by Matt Germain on a counter-play.

The game was tied at 14 points going into the second half. Osceola got the ball to start the second half but after gaining 36 yards their drive fizzled.

New Richmond took the lead, this time on a 66 yard Salmon to Kidder connection. Again the Chieftains rallied to tie the game. Osceola covered 67 yards on seven rushes to knot the score at 21 when Carlson scored for the third time from a yard out. Logan Johnson had the big gain of the drive weaving behind effective blocking for a 51 yard gain.

“The success we had running the ball can be attributed to the hard work and diligence of the front five and the time the coaches put in preparing us for the game,” Carlson said.

“Our front five was getting a great

push off the ball which allowed our running backs to go north and south and get yards. We worked hard all week knowing that we could run the ball effectively on Friday night.”

Osceola had their best defensive stand of the game on the ensuing New Richmond possession. After a Tiger first down on their initial play of the drive the Chieftains held New Richmond without a yard on their next three plays. The Tigers were forced to punt with Osceola hoping to turn the game in their favor with their next drive. Then disaster struck. The Chieftains muffed the punt with New Richmond recovering the ball just three yards from pay dirt. Instead of possessing the ball Osceola gave up the go-ahead touchdown on the next play on a 3-yard Salmon to Kidder pass.

After tying the score the first three times they fell behind, Osceola could not do so for a fourth time. New Richmond got an insurance touchdown with 8:33 to play on an 18-yard run by Powers.

Carlson ended the game with 134 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns. He also kicked all three Chieftain PATs. Johnson amassed 71 yards on five carries with Germain netting 61 yards on nine totes. Aaron Schmidt gained 34 yards on six attempts.

This week Osceola will be engaged in the annual homecoming festivities.

The Chieftains will host Somerset on Sept. 13 with both teams looking to notch their first MBC win. “Somerset will be a very physical game,” Newton said. “They have great team speed. We need to make plays in the open field.”

SOCCER: Team fit to be tied in Menomonie FROM PAGE 10

with Cumberland. The Chieftains and Beavers worked hard and both teams had some early changes but were turned away. Senior Trey Boissy had a couple of those chances but each time his shot just missed the mark.

Boissy has returned to playing soccer this year after not playing since his freshman year.

“This soccer season has been such a great experience so far,” Boissy remarked. “I knew that it would be difficult to catch up with everyone after not playing for two years, but everyone on the team has been extremely helpful in getting me where I am now. The captains Hahns (Huebsch), Cole (Klein), Sean (Archibald), and I are keeping our team in check and will hopefully lead us to some wins this year.”

Cumberland broke the scoreless

deadlock with a goal by Ethan Sandman early in the second half. Sandman scored again five minutes later to double the Cumberland lead to 2-0.

Matthew Friess scored an insurance goal for the Beavers at 73:56.

“Cumberland adjusted and their powerful striker scored a goal a few minutes in,” Jonathan Archibald said in describing second half action. “The Chieftains deflated, let in another a one minutes later, and then another but then they pulled themselves together and had many scoring chances.

The 0-3 score line with 30 minutes left allowed me to give all 22 players on the team significant game time. Sophomores Kiefer Ascheman and Kaleb Woodley played great high pressure defense and made excellent decisions during their time on the field both halves. Freshmen Jace Wyman and Drew Pingel also showed great tenacity and smarts on the field.”

the finish line for Osceola placing 16th overall in a field of 101 runners. Chloe Backland (24th) and Caroline Gearin (38th) closed out the scoring portion of the Chieftain lineup but were also well supported by Shaylee Feske (40th) and Ari Backlund (49th).

Now the Osceola girls team has another challenger, complacency. The Chieftains cannot afford to rest on their laurels. With coach Robinson and assistant coach Theresa Ellefson holding the reins and a bevy of talent behind the varsity that is not likely to happen.

The Osceola boys team also did very well placing sixth out of 13 teams. The Chieftains biggest battle right now

is to get healthy. Osceola is battling some injuries to key performers but the deep and talented squad is stepping up to fill the gaps. The Chieftains were led by Quinn McDonald (17th), who was followed by Nick Kremer (28th), Zach Solsrud (29th), Ethan Robinson (47th), Blake Slater (48th), Jacob Hall (52nd) and Dylan Salewski (64th) in a star filled field of 99 runners.

“The boys team showed how far the depth of their talent goes,” Robinson said. “We are patiently working through some injuries, yet we still had numerous career PRs (personal records) and breakthrough races.

“I am extremely proud of the whole team’s effort.”

Baiting & Feeding There are currently baiting and feeding bans in counties throughout the state.

Hunters and landowners should check the DNR baiting and feeding webpage frequently for updates, as new baiting and feeding bans may be enacted in 2019 with new wild or captive CWD positive detections. None of the counties currently identified statewide will be removed from the baiting and feeding ban in 2019.

Prevent the spread of CWD The DNR recommends a few simple practices to help prevent the spread of CWD. Ways to help include proper carcass transportation, handling and disposal as well as reporting sick deer, following baiting and feeding information and the cleaning and decontamination of equipment. Another way hunters can help is by following urine-

based scent recommendations.

Sick deer reports DNR staff are interested in reports of sick deer and deer with an unknown cause of death, with the exception of car-killed deer.

To report a sick or dead deer, contact local wildlife staff or call the DNR’s Customer Service hotline at 1-800847-9367.

Test results To view CWD results for a harvested deer, visit dnr.wi.gov, search keywords “CWD results.” Hunters will need to enter a customer ID or CWD sample barcode number to view test results. The average turnaround time from when the deer is brought to a sampling station to when the results are available is typically two weeks.

If test results come back positive for CWD, hunters should follow advice from the Centers for Disease Control [EXIT DNR], Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services and the World Health Organization [EXIT DNR] not to consume venison from that deer.

the tires of every piece of equipment on the farm, you would come up with a figure over 5,000.

While no actual emergency landings have ever taken place there, the airstrip is a haven for other area pilots like David. It requires mowing weekly, which takes four hours, though some of the locals that land there help with the task, too.

Filming for “The Airstrip” took 20 hours, spread across two days, which was then whittled down to only 2 minutes and 47 seconds. In the video, you can see David taking off in his plane, Jahnnalee in the basement studio from which she runs her comedy short film company, Why Wait Productions, and, of course, Gizmo, Jahnnalee’s beloved Chihuahua and partner in filmmaking.

Jahnnalee’s been in show business since age 12, when she began modeling, though lat-

er acting entered the picture. A 2006 graduate of Unity High, she had no luck auditioning for the school plays, but went on to adorn her resume with appearances on networks like Disney XD and the Discovery Channel. Not long after her high school graduation, the airstrip was featured in film for the first time, on an episode of MTV’s Web series “Meet or Delete,” where Jahnnalee got to “swap lives” with a girl from New York City.

Jahnnalee then moved to California, where she modeled for Roxy but struggled to break into the acting business as a newbie.

“To get an agent, you have to have an acting reel, but to have an acting reel, you have to have work, but nobody wants to hire you if you don’t have an agent,” she said.

Her acting teacher solved this circular dilemma by suggesting she create her own videos to use in a reel. After receiving praise for the comedic shorts she wrote, directed, edited and starred in, she began entering them in film festivals.

Her series “Dating Disasters” won Best Web Series — Audience Choice as well as Best Script and the Grand Jury Prize at the 2014 Hollywood & Vine Film Festival. In 2015, her “military short film” Lost in Time won Best Actress at Hollywood & Vine. She spends part of the year in Los Angeles and part in Balsam Lake. “Why Wait for opportunities when you can create them yourself!” is the tagline behind her company’s title.

Gizmo the Chihuahua, meanwhile, was first acquired eight years ago as a puppy. Jahnnalee spent two years searching for the perfect show dog, but it quickly became apparent that this was not the life for Gizmo. He had to be neutered in order to prevent him from developing a tumor due

to a testicular anomaly, and show dogs cannot be neutered or spayed.

Shortly afterward, however, Jahnnalee received a call from a director she’d worked with in Los Angeles. The dog that was slated to star in a commercial for the city’s tourism efforts had dropped out- and that dog looked just like Gizmo, and rode everywhere in a purse like him, too. “[Gizmo] nailed it. The camera was on, he was smiling away… and after that, we just kept getting referrals for more stuff, and then he became a working actor and he paid my bills in Los Angeles,” Jahnnalee said.

Jahnnalee found out about the John Deere series through an online casting call, much like “Meet or Delete” and many of her other early opportunities. After a few months of interviews, the producers took a liking to the novelty of a farm that boasts both an airstrip and a film studio.

“They don’t know anyone else that mows with a John Deere on an airstrip,” Jahnnalee said.

“They also don’t know someone else that lives on a farm that is a one-person show and crew, and creates comedy short

films.”

The project was almost halted, though, by the devastating storms of July 19. That day, the farm’s barn was destroyed. Many trees were uprooted and much of the corn and soybean crops were damaged as well.

“I wasn’t sure if John Deere would still want to come out and film, if everything was no longer usable,” Jahnnalee said.

“But the airstrip was fine.”
